Gotta love Chuy's... I eat there about once a month (it's a drive from my house/job) But I make it a point to get there!

I love the atomosphere but always crowded. I always have to push my way to bathroom. I have always had good service, food and bar. My drinks are alway perfect.

Jalapeno ranch is the best dressing. Very nice place to take friends and family from out of town. This is also a great location.

Chuy's is one of my favorite places. The food is fantastic. The decor is fun and funky. The service is always pretty good. The margaritas are to die for. My only complaint is that it is often over an hour wait to get a table.

The best Tex-Mex in the city! I have always had superb service and wonderful food at Chuy's. Been going there for 15 years and would highly recommend them to anyone! If you are going on the weekend, get there early or be ready to wait a while. They are POPULAR! Usual wait is about an hour or so on Friday and Saturday night. Definitely worth the wait...have some chips, salsa and a margarita and relax.

Chuys is a very popular restaurant in Austin. They have great authentic Mexican dishes. During the green chile pepper season, make sure to try out the chile specials, they are amazing! Don't dine there on the weekend if you are in a hurry, though, because the wait is very long for both seating and getting served. They are just that busy. Also, the seating is pretty tight so it can be hard on children to do that kind of wait without moving around at all. The food is very good though and the price is reasonable. I recommend Chuys!

Everyone LOVES their fajitas there. And it has an 'odd' laid back atmosphere, so it is fun. They love Elvis. I ordered the chile rellano with Shrimp and Cheese, it was delicious. But sometimes the wait doesn't make the place worth it. We have had to wait for 1.5 hours on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm.

So Chuy's has been on the news.. Bush daughter, on the Newlyweds. And they have stores in Round Rock, Houston and I think Dallas now.

PROS: Great Tex Mex and fun atmosphere
CONS: Wait is TOOO long.

I have been a fan of this resturant since I first moved into Austin about 14 years ago. It is a simple resturant with no airs, great food, and good service. I have never been disappointed in my meal or my drink. With all these new places opening up, it is good to know that the old staples still exist and have far better food then they ever will - no one can compete with chuys

I wish they would clean their window sills and blinds, but apart from that we are never disappointed at Chuy's.
This was the first time at this location. As always the food was plentiful and hot.
The jalapeno ranch dip is totally addictive as well as the queso. My favorite dish ever is the deluxe chicken enchiladas which is always filled liberally with good white meat chicken.
Waitress was a little ditsy, but hey - it's Austin! :)

I'm confused what the big deal is about. The food is good, definitely not great. We asked for their spiciest salsa only to find out we were already eating it (come on, this is Texas, we like spicy). Nothing was bad, but definitely not worth the hour wait. I think it's just the trendy place to go. There are plenty of restaurants with better, cheaper food and shorter waits.

I've been eating Mexican and Tex Mex for over 40 years in Houston, Dallas Ft. Worth,, San Antonio, Austin and a lot sof smaller towns all over the state. I'd rate Chuy's in the top 5 of all of them. The food was great, service was outstanding and although the price was a couple of dollars more than I normally pay at the majority of the other places the quantity was also greater. I was surprised at how busy it was at 4:30PM on a Friday but we didn't have any problem getting a seat right away.

If you want to have a little fun with a whole lot of energy then this is the place to go. I went on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed with families and college students. The wait for a table was 45 minutes long but, it wasn't too bad considering there was a self-serve chips and salsa bar and you could order drinks before your meal. It was fast and easy! Before too long, (or was it?) we were at our table ordering our food. The food was really good and the service was great, thanks to Jimmy G. a.k.a. "Nancy". I was torn to get a salad and had ordered the "Chicka-chicka Boom-boom" instead and the sauce is so good! Creamy and rich but, the cilantro and lime give it a fresh appeal and cuts the creamy-richness in half. The chicken inside was lean and flavorful and without the "icky-chicken" taste. The desert I had was recommended by our server, a mexican cake, was excellent and something I had never had! After all of that wonderfully loud food, it cooled and calmed my palate and made everything so satisfying, even though I was so full from my entree! My only complaint would be that the food is a bit salty and would like it to be toned down especially for the children's menu.

Pros: High energy, tasty margaritas and tortilla chips.

Cons: It was a little warm inside and the food was salty (salsa, beans and children's mini tacos).

The only thing that keeps this place in business is its local charm. I watched 6 tables that came in AFTER me be seated varying from 2-4 person parties. I had a party of two. The hostesses are all high-school girls, and that's exactly how the place is run. I was given a cup of water which was half-full when I got my meal, and I didn't see my server (who appeared to be stoned off her a$$ the entire time) again. It wasn't until I finished my meal that I got a refill. The food was just as lousy as something I'd expect from Taco Cabana. If you're a local Austin half-baked-hipster, you'll love it because it's sooooo Austin. If you have any taste, I'd advise spending your money elsewhere.

I have tried in vain to find a better Tex-Mex joint. This is the best there is period. Consistent, tastey and quick (once you get a seat). Well worth the wait.

I've given Chuy's two or three chances since living in Austin and have never had a good meal there. Not to mention - do they buy their margarita mix from a liquor store? It tastes like that stuff you buy off a shelf? What about real lime juice?

I usually get cheese enchiladas and I'm pretty picky about them. They weren't good at all. They were so dry, it was awful. I think this place has history in Austin and that's what people like. It's a great place for kids, but not when you're looking for good food. I couldn't believe they didn't have black beans! What the? Don't think I'll be going back unless I have to :-(

Love the food. Very delicious and inexpensive. I would recommend the fried chicken. Fried chicken in general has been my absolute favorite since I was a kid, so I can safely say with confidence that this is the BEST fried chicken ever! I also go to Chuy's in Houston and San Antonio for it.

If you want the true Austin experience and love your Tex Mex, this is the place.

Try the chili rellenos with the ranchero sauce--you won't be disappointed. And, always have the refired beans, they are the best in Austin!

The food at Chuy's is only average, but they have "buzz" and it's considered a hip place to like esp. among white people, who make up the majority of the clientele. This is not to say the food is lousy by any means, although I've always found it to be on the bland, greasy side. I'd just as soon head over to the east side for some authentic tex-mex that's cheaper and tastier. They do have funky decorations on the walls and hanging from the ceiling.

I have been going to Chuy's since I was a young child (we went to the Lamar location with the red fish). Now I live downtown and frequent the Barton Springs location at least once a week. The creamy jalapeno is amazing and I love to buy the dip for tailgating or parties. I will be moving to Dallas in 2008 and I am very excited that they have a Chuy's so I can continue my addiction.

Pros: Amazing Mexican Martinis and Margaritas

Cons: The long wait - but it is just more time to eat chips and have margaritas :)

.

My favorite dish at Chuy's is the Classic Tex-Mex. It's two cheese enchiladas smothered in chili con carne (spicy tomato-based chili sauce with beef) and comes with rice and beans. It comes sprinkled with raw red onions so ask for those to be left off, if you prefer. Get some of their tortillas, too. And make sure you order some creamy jalapeno dip with your chips, it's soooo good!

Chuy's is a great place to eat for anyone new to Austin (and is tired of eating BBQ). The restaurant itself is like a 50's diner meets Tex-Mex and is decorated so that the place sreams "Elvis!" Just like how the singer was great, the food served is great as well. There are so many great items to recommend, that I say go there yourself and you will definitely find something that yout like. You also have the option of enjoying this food outside as well. Of course, such a great price comes with the price of a great amount of time to wait to get seated. But people still come back, and you should check the place out and find out for yourself why.

So it seems like alot of people complain about the lack of authenticity at Chuy's but what can you expect? The whole restaurant is a tribute to Elvis! I think that the problem is most people go to Chuy's expecting the stereotypical Mexican food place and that is not what it is. It has a very different and original atmosphere. The Deluxe Tomatillo sauce is AMAZING and I love the "Big as yo' face burrito" (that is the real name). The wait can be really long but for the most part it is a really fun place to go with friends and hang out. And once again, the food IS good!

I have been to three different Chuy's; two in Houston and one in Austin; and I have never has a really good meal at any of them. At best, it was passable Tex-Mex. My main complaint was the heaviness of their tortillas. There seemed to be more than a pinch of cement as an ingredient. The sauces were, at best, fair. I realize from experience that sometimes you have to try a place a few times to discover better entrees. But, there are way too many quality Mexican joints around with a proven track record for me to waste any more money on Chuy's. I gave 'em a fair chance, but they didn't come through. ADDENDUM! I wanted to add that I am completely baffled by and suspicious of the ratings system on this site. This restaurant had 86 reviews: 42 HR, 13 R, 13 A, 8 BA and 10 NR. For the life of me, I fail to see how that translates into a 9.7 average no matter WHAT scale you grade on.

I just wanted to say that I am appalled by the review below. Chuy's is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Austin and my advice to torianne212 is to never go out to eat again. Any place you go out to eat you are served 'horrendous' proportions and enough for me to make 2 or 3 meals out of. It's up to the individual to choose proportions wisely. With that said, along with Chuy's great food and drinks (I suggest the Texas Martini) they have a friendly waitstaff and great atmosphere. I have never had a bad experience at Chuy's!

This place is disgusting. The portions are HUGE. This is a perfect example of why Americans value quantity over QUALITY of food. It also helps explain why 30% of Texans are overweight.
It doesn't matter how many chalupas/tacos/chips you give me per serving, it needs to taste like food, not like garbage covered in iodized salt. This should be illegal. The portions are horrendous and only contribute to the obesity epidemic in this country. Try cooking at home for a change, stop feeding your kids junk. Yellow cheese is not real food. Set a good example.

I'd heard a lot about this place and brought some out-of-town guests who wanted a truly Austin experience. We were not disappointed. The inside is kinda funky and it definitely looks like a fun college hangout. (Oh, to be a student again!) Self-serve chips and salsa were very much welcome and the choice of 2 out-of-the-ordinary salsas were both different and good. Each had their own little bite, but weren't excessively hot. (With a party of 8, we had an average wait, but it was fine just sitting in the bar with the chips 'n' salsa.) The day's special Golosa Enchiladas were probably the tastiest dish I've had in a long long time. They were really outstanding in presentation and in flavor. Spicy, like I like it! The prices are very very reasonable, especially for the kind of quality food one gets here. I definitely can't wait to make another trip out to this place!

I've been eating at Chuys for years for their nachos. They are incredible!!!!! I order the special nachos, or the panchos and the creamy jap dressing on the side is a must!!!! It's so good on the nachos. You won't be disappointed. The steak burrito with green hatch is really good, but as a whole have never like many of the other dishes. The chicken is very dry and bland. My kids even think the chicken tenders are gross.

I have been a Austin resident for quite a while now. Chuy's is a great restaurant with a great atmosphere, but the food is mediocre at best. Anyone saying Chuy's has the best Mexican in Austin, really needs to get out more. Food's not bad, just not extraordinary. Go for the experience, margaritas, and the atmosphere, not the food.

My family and I visit the north 183 location weekly. The service is always great and the food is yummy. Now that the weather is getting warmer the outdoor tables are a great place to dine or just hang out.

Pros: Excellent service, Low Prices

.

My husband and me eat here once a week, if not more. We cannot get enough of the frozen margaritas and everything else. I am from a border town and know what authentic Mexican food tastes like. This food is not intended to be that. I think Chuy's is an Austin original and that is why it is highly supported. Go Chuy's!!!

The Chuychanga is Chuy's version of a chimichanga. It is one of the best items on the menu. The Barton Springs location is a great place to meet for lunch, happy hour or dinner. The jalepeno ranch salsa is also great!

This is a favorite spot for Lance, and with good reason. Great margaritas, funky interior with many odes to Elvis. And just really, good, consistent Mexican food. No wonder other locations have popped up in other Texas towns over the years.

Chuy's is the best place to eat Tex Mex in Austin! Try the chicken enchilladas w/ deluxe tomatillo sauce or steak fajitas w/ wheat tortilla shells. Be sure to order the jalepeno ranch dip with your chips and salsa--there's no charge. They also have spicy and mild salsa--I like the mild one that's called 'table sauce.' When I first moved to Austin, we ate there and for some reason I didn't like it. I tried it again 1 year later, and have never been disappointed since. I was new to Texas and I think I didn't know how to order!

Oh, and they don't add lard to their beans!

All the Chuy haters just don't know what to order! Chuys is one of the best places in texas to eat good, hot, cheesy, yummy food. They have the best rellenos I've ever tasted. You gotta try the shrimp tacos...wow! ...It's about as good as cheap mexican food gets! Oh and Green Chili Festival rocks! Lots of spicy new dishes to tempt any taste bud. gotta have my weekly Chuy fix.

Just a note-people with a clue do not come here expecting "authentic" Mexican food. It's good, not FANTASTIC, but good-Tex-Mex, plain and simple. The wait can be long on weekends, but I've never had less than exemplary service which more than makes up for it, and I love the atmosphere. Here's another hint for some of you:If you're looking for a romantic meal, go somewhere else. Most people over 45 or so probably won't get it. Chuy's is UBER-cheap, and anywhere that is as completely packed as it is most of the time can't be anything but awesome, obviously. Otherwise you'd get right in.

Pros: CHEAP, friendly staff, GREAT enchiladas

Cons: , long wait on weekends, salsa could be better

If people in Austin have rated Chuy's #1 for Mexican food then people in Austin really don't know what quality Mexican food should taste like. This chain-type food is really average and in some cases below average. If you want great Tex-Mex, I highly recommend Maudies.

When they said "Best of Austin" I thought they meant it. I don't agree with all the choices really. The one I agree with is sadly last on the list (it should be in the the top 5 atleast). There are far better mexican restuarants in Austin..they may be little restuarants but they make up for the size in the great food. Rather than have a huge, over priced restuarant with low quality mexican food. To be honest there are to many small restuarants to name here that are by far better. But in the end this is just my opinion... Give the little restuarants a chance.

I went to Chuy's once, never again. If your looking for authentic Tex-Mex, you will not find it here. Everything just tasted so commercial. I would much rather go to a place like Enchiladas Y Mas then here. The prices were far to high too.

On a Saturday afternoon this place was packed, usually a good sign, but when we were through the reason was obvious...it's a good place a take kids, i.e. a place where screaming kids won't get noticed and you don't have to worry about them not being happy with the food. Also, the food is cheap, it's near the center of Austin, and it's near the park. These are the things going for it, but taken as an eating experience, there are a lot better places to go if one is willing to travel 1/2 mile. The food was just OK. We won't be going back.

True, this restaurant is considered probably the best in Austin, but Trudy's taste is much more unique and the service is better. If you are into Tex-Mex, this is a great dive to try out especially if you are into Elvis memorabilia. If you are into T-shirts, you must purchase one. They are some of the coolest ones you'll find.

I am new to Austin, and heard a lot about Chuy's, so made it one of my first stops. I couldn't believe there was a 30 minute wait on a Wednesday at 7pm. I think I would rate it ok, average, but not great. Some items were good, nothing to knock your socks off, some items were just bad. Had good service tho. Was very loud in there too.

Decor was lame, I am sick of seeing things stuck to the ceiling. I would also not rate this as "cheap eats".

Why does Austin LOVE cheesey corporate-style restaurants? I think the category was best restaurant, not best place to wait three hours for mediocre food and horrible service. So they make fresh tortillas; there are a million other places that do the same. I can't believe Taco Bell didn't win. Afterall, they are cheap, brightly colored, and you can get soda fresh from the machine.

If you can put up with Austinite's overvaluing themselves, then Chuy's has got to be one of the best places to go and hang out in Austin. Even if you don;t like the people on Texas Martini will help put that in to perspective. Others in Austin have tried to duplicate it (There are plenty), but the original is here. Seems fitting for a resaurant that prizes originals such as Elvis to have some of there own. Put your face in to a "Big as Yo' face Burrito" or any of the other great flavors available. Just have fun knowing that no other state (or many other Texas cities) can you find food and drinks this good, and keep your wallet when you leave.

Chuy's has great burritos and sopapillas. The service however is unpredictable. Parking is also sometimes a problem. However, the atmosphere is great. I would recommend.
