Drivers Edge is a TOTAL RIP OFF!!!

by Nancy C.

I also took my 1998 Ford Mustange in for a state inspection last year and they told me it failed and that they would have to run a diagnostic on it which would cost $90.00. I paid it and then they told me it was the gas cap that made it fail inspection, but they also found about $4,000.00 worth of additional things that needed to be repaired/replaced. Being newly single and having to take care of automotive issues for the first time in over 20 years, I panicked and paid for what I was able (that they said was most important). Paid about $2,500.00 over the next month. THEN they told me my transmission was going out and would need to be replaced.... I then took my car to the Ford Dealership on Plano Parkway....they told me there was not a thing wrong with my transmission!!!!! A year later and my car is still running just fine and dandy!

These people should be arrested!

Definitely Scammers

by S B.

I pulled in to Driver's Edge for a State Inspection just because they were close to other errands I was running. I got a bad vibe when I walked in, but I stayed simply because my car is just 3 years old and I knew there were no problems with it.
While I was waiting, they finished the Inspection for the guy who was there before me. They came in and told him he failed the Inspection because he had bad wiper blades and something else that I forgot. Whatever it was, I remember thinking it was very convenient that he "failed" on two simple things that Driver's Edge just happened to have the replacements for. He paid what they asked and left.
When they finished with my car, they came in and told me that my car passed except for the gas cap. They said it didn't seal. But they had one they could sell me so I could pass Inspection. They even had the gas cap in a box sitting next to the register, ready to ring up.
I said I'd just take my keys and leave. They said they wouldn't let me go unless I paid for the Inspection and they wouldn't give me the sticker unless I paid for the gas cap. I told them I didn't believe them because the car was only 3 years old. I've owned individual cars for 15 years or more and never had the gas cap fail an Inspection. I finally told them flat out that I thought they were trying to scam me. First they acted like I'd hurt their feelings. When I continued to press the matter, they suddenly got mad, started yelling, and told me to get out of their shop. I said I wouldn't leave without my car. They again yelled for me to get out and not come back. I said I had no plans to come back but I wouldn't leave without my car. The guy reached for the phone and said he would call 911 if I didn't get off their property. I pulled out my cell phone and said I would call for them because they were holding my car hostage. The guy yelled that he would bring my car around.
He did. I left.
I drove down the street to a different car shop. Guess what? I passed Inspection. I specifically checked the gas cap rating and it showed PASS.

Definitely a bunch of vultures!

by J. T.

I too, took my car in for a simple oil change and walked out with an estimate for $2,300 in work that I needed to do right away or they told me I'd blow the head gasket. They said it was leaking but burning off before it hit the ground. They said that coolant was leaking into the oil and oil is leaking into the coolant. Hmmmm. They also wanted to charge me NINETY SEVEN DOLLARS for an air filter and a cabin air filter. I'm sorry, but just because I am a single mom does not mean I am an idiot!!! I walked out of there freaked out and scared out of my mind. It is so wrong of those guys to treat people in this fashion!! I've talked to several other mechanics I know about what I was told, and I'm taking my car into Buick for an opinion, but I've not seen an overheating issue and I'm keeping an eye on my dipstick, just because of what these DIPSTICKS have me so freaked out about. I'm pretty sure I could have gone anywhere else in the world and avoided being emotionally tortured in the way these guys did. DO NOT USE DRIVER'S EDGE!!

Update: Took my car into Buick today and the guy was SHOCKED by what Driver's Edge told me. He took me under the car and did a full inspection. Driver's Edge lied to me, straight up. I'm glad I paid $50 for peace of mind, rather than giving these lying, cheating idiots one more dime of my hard-earned money!!!

Horrible Con Artists

by J. L.

I wish I had read these reviews yesterday. My car had been making a weird noise for a few weeks. I had taken it in to Walmart and they told me my hydraulics were loose, but it wasn't an emergency. So yesterday, I was driving and noticed the oil light came on. I drive an 04 Tracker that has never given me a problem. I pull into Drivers Edge because they are close, and the guy comes running out and says, oh there is something seriously wrong with your car, blah, blah, blah. I said, just put some oil in it. He then talked me into letting them check the noise. Again, I said put some oil in it. So, I go to sit and wait and next thing I know the guy comes in and starts talking all this gibberish telling me I have blown my engine by driving with no oil, that I am about to blow a rod, that the hydraulics are shot, my drive train is about to go on and on and on. I freaked out. So I called my dad and had the guy talk to my dad. My dad freaked out too. So I asked them to give me a quote on what it would cost to fix it. He hemmed and hawed and then came up with a quote of $5,000! to replace the engine. He then tells me he feels uncomfortable letting me drive it because the car could blow up on me. I got my dad back on the phone and he told me to just take the car and go home and we deal with it later. So despite them fighting me to get my car back, they put oil in it, I got in my car and started driving home. The car was driving perfectly. No noise, no shaking, nothing. My dad calls me back and tells me to go to another repair shot and get a second opinion. So I stop at a Kwik Kar Repair and the guy says he will do a computer analysis of the car and run checks on everything for $40. Turns out there was NOTHING wrong with my car! I told the guy at Kwik Kar what the Drivers Edge guy said about $5,000, and said even if I needed a new engine for my car it would not be more than $2,500. What dirt bags.

Don't go to the place!!!

by daisy t.

I took my brand new car for an oil change at Coit & Legacy location. Learned my lesson a big time. These idiots didn't put the oil cap back on. I drove for about 12 miles and noticed the smoke came out from the hook. The oil has spill all over the place. I called the store and the guy came out to find out that the cap wasn't on and it was still under the hook in a 'safe' place. So he put it back on, top up the oil and offered to have a cleaning at the shop. So I took it back to the shop that night, and trust that they will do a good cleaning job. Hell no, there are still oil and many visible places that didn't get clean. And it now make my garage dirty.
I haven't decided what to do with the shop. Some friends suggested that have them paid for a steam clean and an inspection by the dealership. If you have similar experience or any other suggestions to make sure the car is all okay, please let me know by email (dht9s@rocketmail.com)

Thanks for reading.

What a rip-off

by Jeff K.

I wrote a bad review for these idiots in October 2007 and then took my truck back in 2008 for an inspection. I figured they couldn't try to rip me off on an inspection and my truck should easily pass. I went for the convenience of where they were located. That was my own stupid fault for going back knowing these guys are con artists. They didn't pass my truck because they said my power steering pump was leaking and they wanted about $700 to fix it. I told them it wasn't leaking but they said I'd have to replace it to pass inspection. I took my truck home, cleaned the pump real good and moved the steering wheel back and forth and had someone else move it back and forth as I watched the pump. Absolutely no leaks. I went back 30 minutes later and told them this and they looked at it again and said "You're right, it's not leaking" and finally passed my truck after about another hour of my time. What a joke!!! I've learned once and for all not to take my vehicles there for ANYTHING!!! If I didn't know a little something about cars, I would've installed a new pump for absolutely no reason. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take my advice and don't take your car to this place for any reason.

Warning!

by Cris S.

I took my car in for an oil change and they found about $4000 worth of repairs that needed to be done right away or my car was going to break down and leave me stranded on the side of the road any day! I took it to my regular mechanic with a list of what was wrong with it and guess what? Nothing was wrong with it. Well, the belts they said were dried and cracked and about to snap at any second did look a bit worn to my mechanic. He said I could easily get another 20K miles out of it before it left me stranded. They use scare tactics to try and get you to make the costly repairs that are really not even necessary. DO NOT go to these people for anything!

I agree with the rip-off - They charged 1000.00 for unnecessary repair

by Anonymous

I totally agree with the rip-off. They replaced my car's inner tie rod ends for over 1000.00 and checked with the dealer as well as other mechanic shops in plano after the repair. They laughed at me for getting this repair done. I strongly urge the customers to not get ripped off again with this unethical business in Plano. I have all the invoices/repairs performed by them to show also. I am not a fake customer and I don't want any other innocent customers cheated by this kind of businesses

They charge doctor's rates!!!

by Jeff K.

They wanted $600 to replace my starter. The starter only costs $150 retail. They wanted $450 for labor, apparantly. I offered them $300 to replace it, but they refused. I got the car back to my house and replaced the starter myself in less than 1 hour. I wish I could make $450 per hour.

DON'T USE THIS PLACE

by Anonymous

Do not let your girlfriends, sisters, daughters, etc. use this place!! I too was given a FAKE diagostic test and was charged $95. They could not provide me with the print of the test because they 'don't always print these out". Hmmmmm. After a week's worth of going back and forth with fake and untrue information about my car and them telling me it would cost over $900 for a starter and battery change, I made arrangements to have it towed to another location - because they said my car would not start since the day I dropped it off. To my surprise when I go to pay the bill and see about getting a tow truck there, my car was running fine! They even pulled it around front for me. You have been warned. They are not friendly and refused to do the right thing. I'm telling all I know about this place. What an unfortunate situation to be put in. Seems they prey on women.

Better than the Dealer

by Anonymous

I went to Driver's Edge after seeing a flier at church offering a discount on a back-to-school tune up. My car was sputtering so I figured I ought to have it looked at. I spoke directly to the owner and he had one of his mechanics, Tom, look it over. He replaced the spark plugs and wires and let me drive it for a few days to make sure the problem was taken care of. These guys were more than helpful, and honest, then even gave me a ride back to my house while the car was being checked out. Tom, also told me all the employees have their cars worked on at that shop, too. They also warranty their work, and I noticed at least one of the associates spoke Spanish. I would bring my car back to them.

rip off!!! price gauge for contracted work they can't do!

by M. H.

I coasted in off the Tollway, late to work and with 2 carseats in my back seat. I told them I think something might be wrong with the transmission, that I was a single working mother, and to not take advantage of me just because my car stopped there. They gave a me a blank written estimate for $2200 to rebuild the transmission. This is after the fact they charged me $93 for a fake diagnostic that told me nothing about the details of the repair or damage. What they didn't know is that my ex is in the car business and knows a few things about cars and repair work. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE UNLESS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BEING RIPPED OFF FOR REPAIR WORK THEY HAVE TO CONTRACT OUT FOR. I found a transmission shop that quoted a complete rebuild with all the details and explanations needed for $900 less and with a better warenty.

rip-off repair shop

by Susan W. | insider Insider | Rank: 22,610

I took my car in for a $400 repair and was given a list of over $3000 in repairs that 'needed' to be done to my car eventhough my car was working perfectly (other than the $400 repair that it did need). Don't trust them !
