The air-conditioner of my 1996 Mercury Sable went out in the summer's 100-degree temperatures. The dealer told me he could not get new parts for it, and he did not want to fix it with used parts. I searched and found Carter's on North Lamar and took the car in for an estimate. They were able to find used p[arts easily, and fixed the air-conditioning and an oil leak right away for a reasonable price. I was very happy with the results and would recommend this shop to anyone in a similar predicament.
I have been taking my vehicles to Carter's North for almost three years now, and I can't recommend them highly enough.
I drive an old 1986 Toyota Van for work. It's a very odd vehicle that requires a mechanic with attention to detail and the ability to troubleshoot difficult problems. In many cases, I've had to do repairs myself in the past, since I was unable to find a mechanic willing to go the extra mile in keeping the vehicle running for me. Since I rely on the van to produce my income, I can't afford to monkey around with substandard repair work. It wasn't until I moved into this neighborhood and found Carter's that I was able to relieve myself of the burden of doing repairs myself.
There's not enough room here for me to list all of the incidents over the past three years in which Mike, Jake, and the rest of the guys at Carter's have done a fantastic job for me in troubleshooting difficult problems, being straight and reasonable with me about the costs involved, and gone the extra mile in finding parts for a vehicle that can often be really tough to find parts for. I'm not necessarily an easy customer, since I want to know exactly what's going on and have all related costs explained to me in a way that makes sense, and I really appreciate that Mike and Jake are always willing to take the time to do that for me.
Recently, I bought a new (used) vehicle for personal use, and the guys at Carter's again went the extra mile for me, taking a look at vehicles I was considering and giving me the real scoop on whether or not the vehicle would be a good buy. I went with the car that they vouched for, and have been very happy I did.
Whether it's keeping my old high-mileage work vehicle running reliably and smoothly (and exceeding most peoples' expectations for longevity) or helping me out with my most recent vehicle and its purchase, I couldn't be happier with the service I get at Carter's. These guys are a good old-fashioned neighborhood car repair shop. If you want personal service and accountability from a mechanic, look no further than Carter's North.
I took my truck to another shop who quoted me a high price with repairs that did not need to be fixed. Carters Transmission helped me out saving me money and my transmission works great! Thanks Mike :)
I can't say enough good things about this business. I took my car as a last ditch effort to have the AC repaired after two other garages were unable to fix it. Carters worked for several days trying to find the problem. When they initially told me that they had improved the AC, but not made it perfect, they said they would not even charge me for the parts and several days of labor they had into the job. I asked them to keep working on it, and when they tried something no one else had, they fixed it! I am so impressed at their integrity and business practices. Great place to service your car. No one else was able to fix my problem--but they did, and were willing to stand by the quality of their work.
I took my Dodge transmission to carters and they saved me lots of money from the the other shop that i took it too. They wanted to charge me 3500.00 dollars to fix the Transmission .And carters charged me 2600.00 and they gave me a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty... I will tell all my friends ....Thanks alot Mike !!!!!!!!
My A/C wasn't blowing cold, I took it to Carter's North Store and I thought it was something major. I found out from Mike it was something very simple as a A/C pressure switch. Thanks Mike or the honesty and low cost to fix my A/C. I would recommend this shop to anybody I know.
I HAVE BEEN USING CARTER'S AUTO SHOP (MAINLY NORTH LOCATION) FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS. INITIALLY I TRIED CARTER'S FOR MY MAZDA MX-6 TRANS REPIAR. SINCE THEN I TIRED NUMEROUS OTHER CARS, AND ALWAYS EXPERIENCED PLEASANT OUTCOMES (PERFORMANCE, WARRANTY AND PRICE). ONE TIME, I TRIED MY BMW 7 SERIES AIRCON PROBLEM THAT PREVIOUS OWNER COULD NOT FIX IT WITH BMW DEALER. CARTER DID FIX IT AND WORKED GREAT. VERY IMPRESSED ON JAKE'S (OWNER) AUTO MECHANIC KNOWLEDGE AS WELL AS REPAIR EXPERIENCE!
I went here last week with an A/C issue. The guys are very cool and honest and will bend over backwards to take care of you. Prices are reasonable and they know what they are doing. Can't say enough about how helpful Kevin is. He is the guy to talk to when you want work done. The techs are awesome and will fix your problems quickly and accurately. I highly recommend this place.
Pros: Customer Service
I just drove by and have my car inspected for free for the AC and my axle problem. Ken is a very honest guy who tells me what the problems are, and the cost to repair them. Although I may not have my car repaired over there because of the high cost (it's an very old car, so...probably make some more sense to buy a used one), I feel his knowledge and expertise toward the car he (or his colleague) inspect and the time taken to inspect the car.
Overall, I think if one day my other car has problem, I surely will have them take a look
Pros: Very honest and good people
In the 23 years that I have done business with Carter's the work has ALWAYS been exceptional! Thru the years, I've purchased several used vehicles and this business not only checked it over to make certain it was a good car to purchase, I was given pointers on what needed replacing as far as parts and service. I was able to negotiate the price and drive away in a car that I was happy to have; no buyer's guilt here! Additionally, Carter's works on Imports & domestics and this prevents my husband & I from having to drive all over town for repairs! Did I mention the reasonable rates? I drive a Jeep and my husband drives a Mercedes; our cars are all treated the same there; the best & well cared for! Lastly, he & his crew are trustworthy and honest; thru the years, I've come to trust only Carter's, it was a waste 'checking anyone else out,' coupons & the like, these guys are all you need. I send all my friends to him; when you want and have the best, it's NOT a secret to keep! You'll NEVER go wrong here, I haven't in 23 years & counting!
Pros: Great rates, only pay for work done, Imports & domestics
Cons: NONE IN 23 YEARS OR SO!!!
I have a older Chevrolet S-10 Blazer I had taken it to several places before Carter's up in Austin. No one could duplicate the problems I was having, so time after time I was being towed in also more often. I had taken some repairs to Jake the owners of Carter's Transmissions along time ago and I was impressed on the quality of the repairs and the prices. When I called Carter's Jake was still there and he remembered me. I explained the problems and then I took the car up to Austin for repairs.\r
To make things short he repaired my car all problems are gone and I will drive the car much longer thanks to Carter's Transmission on North Lamar.\r
Pros: Owner Super Friendly, Good Mechanics, Nice Manager
I have taken all my cars here when needed for the last 10 years. They are always honest with me, and WONT start working on it until they have explained all my options, prices etc.
I have been to both locations, but I am closer to the North Store so I am more familiar with that.
Great service, convenient, and NOT expensive at all. another major plus in this economy!!!
Pros: they are honest
Cons: none, well coffee would be nice! :)
I have had the hardest time finding an honest mechanic in this town! The last time I took my car for an oil change at an area car dealership, they came back and told me I needed $1750 worth of work done. I took my car in to Carter's on a friend's recommendation, and turned out that half of it was bogus. I got out under $900 (and that included them changing my timing belt!).\r
My husband and I own an older Accord and a newer CR-V, and they have successfully changed timing belt, engine mounts, brake pads, and engine air filters. Every time the car's been ready by the next day. All around great job!
Pros: Honest, Fast, Competent
One day my car wouldn't start and I'm a DIYer when it comes to simple auto repairs, because in the past I've found that many mechanics cause more problems than they fix. So I went to Autozone with my battery, cables, and starter. I had them bench test all of these components to make sure everything was working properly. The first Autozone said everything tested good, but suggested I replace my negative battery cable as there was a section with extensive corrosion. So I did and went home put everything back together and the engine still wouldn't turn over. I took the same stuff to a different Autozone and they told me the same thing, everything is working fine. I told them that the first one told me that and asked them to test it again. With the same results, I finally got frustrated enough to just give up and let a mechanic work on it. After shopping around I found Carter's had the most positive reviews and they also offer free towing w/ work costing over $300.\r
So I had the car towed to Carter's and within an hour they found the problem. The starter wouldn't turn! It would pop out then go right back in w/out ever engaging the flywheel. They told me my flywheel had some worn teeth but nothing that needed to be replaced immediately. These guys are very honest and upfront and work fast. They had my car in and out in the same day and for a reasonable price. The real test will be to see if the valve cover gaskets that I'm having them do will be done right. As Honda's are notorious for being a pain in the butt to get the seals around the spark plugs to stay put and not leak.
Pros: Honest, fast, reasonable prices
The service at Carters was great. Found the problem and fixed it right away. I was not nickled and dimed to death. They were very reasonable. I would highly recommend them to anyone. They have my business....
Pros: Fast Service
We've being using Carter's for 7-8 years. They did all the work on our '97 Villager, our '97 Chevy truck and now maintenance on our '06 Toyota. The Villager and the '97 Chevy are still in use thanks to the upkeep by Carter's over the years. Whenever we take a vehicle in they let us know what the problem is in a timely manner along with an estimate of the cost. They let us know what work is necessary now and what can wait. It's nice to have a mechanic you can trust.
This is my first time to write a review but if their is one thing I get panicky about its finding a mechanic. These guys were no fuss and no hustle. I can't tell you how many times I have felt like mechanics were trying to side step and up-sell me into oblivion. I only needed one repair, and that is what I got. I will return for anything else I need and tell people I know. By the way I was also comforted by the fact that it didn't have that creepy corporate big toothed grin kind of attempt at honest, no pony show just a fair shake. \r
---Also thanks to those of you who wrote reviews. I don't usually feel like the internet can supply me with trust worthy information but I found myself reading the comments and feeling like I was headed there off a friends word. I did notice another local mechanic who had something like 200 reviews (which confused me) but then read on to see that they were basically paying customers to write them... i didn't like that. Anyway thanks again...\r
Pros: old school. honest.
Just wanted to let everyone know that if you are looking for a good mechanic with honesty and integrity, look no further. They only fixed what needed to be fixed and did not try to stick it to me. Just good ol fashion honest service. They are giving the industry back a good name. Check em' out!!!
Pros: honest, dependable service
I am a single female with no mechanical knowledge at all. But I must say that I will forever take my vehicle to Carter's after being treated like a real human and not another easy target.. When my car started overheating, I was scared to take it anywhere knowing that I would be taken advantage of. Turns out the guys at Carter's found a leak in one of my hoses and had me up and running in no time and very reasonably priced. Nice to know that there are stll honest people in the world. Thanks Carter's. I will let everyone I know of your honesty and integrity. Customer for life!!!
Pros: Honest, Fair, Service
I was having an issue with the transmission in my car and took it to the dealership and they could't find the problem, but still charged me over $50 for looking at it. I took it to Carters Transmission and not only did they find the problem (which was a loose motor mount bolt), they fixed it and didn't charge me for it. I would highly recommend them if you are needing transmission service. They also took the time and showed me on my car where the problem was and also explained it so I could understand it.
DO NOT GO SEE the North Lamar location of Carters. Things started when the South Austin location was called to inquire about a car that wouldnt start. They referred to the North Lamar location, and said that towing (local) would be free and $45.00 if it was out of the local area. That was acceptable, so the car was towed there. The North Lamar Location called and said that they would need to replace the battery, and that they would need the new battery on the car to test the charging system to see if that was the problem.\r
They installed a $90.00 'warehouse brand' battery on the car. (was told they did not know who the actual manufacturer was by Oscar the guy that was in charge there) The cost of the battery was never mentioned to us. They also tried to charge a $65.00 towing fee, claiming that they had a different policy on tow pricing than the South Austin location. Oscar used the analogy that if you went to gas stations they charged different prices for gas at different stations. I am not sure how that relates but ok. Oscar, also told us that the Alternator was OVERCHARGING at 14.0 volts and that it should be replaced to the cost of 350.00. \r
First of all.. the alternator's acceptable charge range is 13.5-15.0volts. over 15.0 volts and you have an over charging alternator. I had them put the battery back on the car, and picked up a $59.99 Duralast with a longer and better warranty. The North Lamar location wanted to charge us an additional $25.00 in labor to put the old battery back on. Oscar claimed he told us that he was going to charge that on the phone. And no he had only said we would have to pay the labor he already incurred putting the new one on and testing the system.\r
He removed the double charge on labor and knocked the tow fee to $50.00.\r
We the battery in 5 minutes in their parking lot. Then took the car to AutoZone and\r
they said the Alternator WAS WORKING PERFECTLY.\r
DO NOT TRUST THE N. LAMAR CARTER's SHADY!!!
My daughter attends school at UT and I live in Houston. When her vehicle broke down I had no clue who to take it to. The only thing I could do was to look online. Carter's towed the vehicle for free, gave me a complete estimate free of charge, and fixed the vehicle at a fair price (I talked to my local\r
I have just recently moved to town and was looking for a trustworthy mechanic to take my vehicle to, luckily I found Carters. They took the time to explain the problem to me in simple terms and fixed it\r
in a timely manner.
Given the fact that I used to be a mechanic, I can appreciate the attention to detail Carter's took with my truck. I used to be able to work on my own vehicles, but now Carter's has my business.
