5 Stars: Mercedes is a ROCKSTAR! (by kfetty)

I have lived in Austin my whole life and bounced around with different salons over time - until last year (2008), when Mercedes cut my hair. My first appointment was great. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted, but gave her some pointers on what I thought I was looking for - ever since then NO ONE will cut my hair but her. In fact, I recently moved to Dallas for a job and I still drive back to Austin to get my haircut by Mercedes - which is great because she works weekends too! Yes, sounds a little ridiculous to drive 3.5 hours for a haircut, but she is THAT GOOD. I understand some of the other complaints up here about the other staff, or perhaps the rushed experience - that may be true and I just don't notice it - but even if I did, I promise I would still go there, because Mercedes is a miracle worker and I have loved every haircut she has done for me.

1 Stars: Terrible Attitudes From Staff. Rushed! (by KPalmer)

I was completely shocked by the cold, rude, & hasty way I was treated. When spending $250 for a cut & color, I expect some nice service. I was treated like a number, not a person; I observed as other clients were treated the same way. I was shuffled between 3 different stylists. The girl who I paid to have my appointment with put my highlights in & that was the last I saw of her. She didn't even see the end result. It was evident that the staff just wanted to rush through to the next client & fit in as many as they could. Worst service I have ever had.

5 Stars: go see Mercedes at Jackson Ruiz (by ansley73)

I was referred to MERCEDES at Jackson Ruiz by a friend who always has the cutest haircut. I brought in a photograph of the cut I wanted- she took one look and the photo, one look at me and knew exactly what to do. I am so happy with my cut and will be a lifetime client. Mercedes is a lovely, charming young woman, extremely gifted at her craft and has excellent bedside manners. I highly recommend her and commend the entire staff for their genuine dedication to providing excellent service.

1 Stars: Bad Attitudes and Poor Service (by Law123)

I have visited this salon several times before and everyone has always been friendly for the most part. About a week ago I went to have someone do my hair for graduation and it was hands down one of the worst experiences I have had in Austin. My stylist basically rushed me out of the shampoo bowl and the end product looked terrible. She told her manager and he was rude himself. He basically told me I was confused about why I didn't like my hair and told me that she had done what I requested to have done when I called in. AND? Anyone could say that for any job. Just because you do what is asked does not mean it's quality work. I was shocked at the level of disrespect and am incredibly disappointed. I have told my friends in the law school to no longer frequent this place even to buy products. I certainly will not be doing business with them again.

1 Stars: BAD Choice for Wedding!! (by LizMBrooklyn)

I live in Brooklyn and got married in Austin in late May 2009. I had heard great things about Jackson Ruiz and wanted them to do my hair for my wedding, which was at noon on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. During a trip to Austin in January, I went to the salon and scheduled an appoinment at 8 a.m. the day I was getting married. Initially, the staff was great--they were opening the salon early for me, given my noon wedding.

About a week and a half before my wedding, I was calling all of my appointments to confirm the time, and the stylist who was scheduled to do my hair no longer worked there. No one had called me at all about this until I reached out to them first!!

Over the next few days, I spoke with three different people at Jackson Ruiz, and each said that they would get back to me the next day if anyone would be interested in taking my appointment. I didn't hear back from anyone at all until 3 days before my wedding. Yes, that's right, three days before my wedding! The person who finally called me back left a message saying that they had found someone to do my hair. It was pretty clear in the message that he was irritated by the situation, and felt put out by it. I called back and left a message with someone else at the salon to say that I had found someone else do my hair. But at 8:15 a.m. during the day at my wedding, I got another call from Jackson Ruiz asking where I was, because they were there, waiting for me to arrive. Again, the attitude was pretty rude, and I had already called to say that their services were no longer needed!

That said, I found a great person on short notice to do my hair, and she came to my house and everything! Her name is Jessica, and she works at Bella Salon, down the street from Jackson Ruiz. I HIGHLY recommend her and the friendly staff at Bella. They really saved the day after all of this happened. Thanks, Jessica!!!

5 Stars: Great Place!!! (by darren123)

Got a great color and cut with Melissa and Bianca. The experience was great, love the wine and the atmosphere. I got the best hand massage and mini facial in the shampoo room. The experience was well worth the price.

1 Stars: Bad experience (by fc1027)

Ok so I've had my hair colored here and then my hair cut here. The first experience with the coloring deserved a 3 BUT I had to give it a 1 because whoever cut my hair was a total B. She told me the reason my hair was so dry was because I use grocery store coloring and to her surprise/ embarrassment I quipped back "Well that's funny because the last night I dyed my hair it was here." I guess that goes to show you how "Great" their products are. She thinned my hair even though I asked her not to... it was horrible. Like I said expensive and I'm glad they don't let you tip because I didn't want to give her a dime more.

5 Stars: Really?? (by Stacy B.)

I don't know who this "Buck H." person is, but Jackson Ruiz is definitely ot that kind of establishment. Obviously, they have never walked through the doors, or else they would know that they are some of the friendliest and most professional people in Austin. I have recommended both the salon and spa highly amongst my friends and we all love it!! So, don't let this wildly imaginative story distract you from an amazing retreat at Jackson Ruiz.

1 Stars: DO NOT GO HERE! (by kgdub)

I'm going to start off with saying I used to go see Anna at Salon JR, and that was the only reason I ever went to JR. She has moved on to bigger and better things, so now that she?s gone, I feel comfortable posting this review.
I have visited JR several times, and I have to say that I am NOT impressed. I will never return to this salon, for the following reasons:
1) There is always a rushed, frantic atmosphere (not exactly a relaxing spa experience).
2) Incredibly inappropriate conversations being had by the employees (all teenagers need to get an abortion if they're pregnant, because none of them can take care of their children?!?!). I am in no way a prude or easily offended, but when I?m going to get my hair done, it?s a treat for me?the LAST thing I want is to have to listen to the personal opinions of an incredibly young hair colorist, voiced at the top of her lungs. Especially when it is apparent to all of the unfortunate people listening that she has no clue what the hell she is talking about.
3) I have observed snippy exchanges between employees, which were blatantly ignored by the management?no client should EVER have to watch employees of a business they are visiting gripe at one another for approximately 30 minutes, flouncing back & forth and being nasty to one another. It just feeds in to the uncomfortable, tense atmosphere which dominates at this salon. The last time I was there I couldn?t wait to just get the hell out!
4) All the "extra" people milling around doing nothing! The interns, who are supposed to be helping people check out, giving hand massages, etc. just stand around gossiping and looking hugely bored. If I'm spending my hard-earned money at a business, the LEAST they can do is act like they are happy I'm there.
5) My final reason, and the one I think is the most important, is the fact that the caliber of stylist that this salon hires & puts out on the floor is seriously slipping. Used to be, you could get an appointment with any one of several colorists or stylists and be guaranteed a wonderful experience. Now, not so much?I have personally witnessed several people getting color which turned out horrible! I have also heard horror stories about trying to book appointments to get the mistakes corrected. Thankfully this never happened to me, because I only went to ANNA STRAUSS (who has moved to BREEZE SALON & SPA). The only reason I ever frequented this place was because Anna was there, and now that she?s gone, I?ll never set foot in here again!

5 Stars: jackson ruiz is great, and phillip is a super fabulous stylist (by aisatsana)

I've been going to jackson ruiz for about two years, and I think they're great. I LOVE my hairdresser, phillip, who pampers me and always does a beautiful job. besides being talented, he really likes his job, he really likes people, and it shows. the front desk folks are super sweet, too. once when phillip was out sick, I was rescheduled with another stylist (who has since left), and my experience wasn't so super with her, but they didn't charge me since I didn't get to see phillip, and when I contacted them about the bad "sub" stylist, they bent over backwards to make it right and to make sure I was a happy customer. I was very impressed by their customer service, and I continue to be a happy customer.

5 Stars: I can't stop smiling, thank you Mercedes! (by AdrienneLynn)

I have NEVER been the type to write reviews on sites. I mean, who actually has the time or cares enough to write anyway? Well, after leaving the salon tonight- yes, tonight-as in about 15 minutes ago, (And yes, Jackson Ruiz actually stays open this late to accomodate the busy folks like me) I cannot stop smiling. I feel like a million bucks and I had the best time sitting in a chair for an hour than I ever have in my life. If you're normal, you kinda dread going to the salon sometime because you feel obligated to talk to the stylist at times you kinda don't want to... And, its not like you can not talk because your sitting in a chair starring at yourelf in the mirror and at the mercy of the person holding the scissors...well, I'm a changed woman. MERCEDES at Jackson Ruiz not only had me completely comfortable, entertained and laughing the entire time, but she nailed my haircut and I walked out with the biggest smile on my face. Seriously. Hands down the most laidback and yet attentive person I've met. So there. I've written my first comment and I hope you are now dialin and smilin, booking your appointment with Mercedes.

1 Stars: who are you kidding??? (by austinMARINE)

this is the worst place in town my wife recently got her hair cut and colored. from the time she step in the store she was treated like trash. my wife is nothing of the sort (nurse at st. davids). she does not go in to the "high class" establishments often so when a friend she works with told her she should try jackson ruiz out she did. the hostess yells at her and then apologizes to her teeny bopper friends that were even customers, she got offered red wine but after 15min of sitting in the chair waiting she finally gets an "we are out." then after sitting there she gets shuffled to another waiting room where the stylist takes someone else after another 15 min a completly new person walks in and takes her to the back to get her hair colored... IT WAS DONE WRONG!!!! my wife is very perticular about her coloring and to spend so much to get it done to not her satisifcation just upsets me to no ends. she then waits in the waiting room 10 min then a very rude black lady walks in to dry her hair. she says "lets go" does it then leaves... my wife just sitting there.... finally the original stylist walks in and takes her to the front.... please do not go to this establishment!!! if you want your hair colored wrong do it at home... atleast you could have some fun...

1 Stars: WORST PLACE EVER (by andrew m.)

THIS IS FOR MY WIFE!!! my wife currently went there on the recommendation of her friends and when she went there for her consultation she was very impressed with their professionalism but when she went to get her hair colored she was 10 min before the appointment where she had to wait in line for to 16 year olds to JUST talk to the hostess, where she yelled over them with attitude to my wife "can i help you?" where my wife promptly told her she had an appointment and then gets ignored while she apologizes to the little kids that she was only talking to... my wife then finally gets escorted to her hair color chair where she sat and was offered red wine, 15 min later the lady comes back and tells her she doesnt have any... she then gets shuffled to another waiting room for 30min and a completely random person brings her to a differnt room and begins to color her hair the wrong color... when taken from that room to the original room she gets another different stylist while the original colorer just watches, then a black lady comes in and rudely ask the stylist if she has had her hands massaged when my wife didnt exist. i plead to you woman of austin texas please dont go to this place its not worth the money.

2 Stars: Such Hype-no delivery (by Tina M.)

I contacted JR Salon Nov, 2007 on the recommendation of a co-worker who raves about the massages. First I got a consultation-impressive, however, since I wanted both a hair cut and color I needed to schedule 2 different appointments, which could not occur until after christmas - WOW! What choice did I have? I booked the appts only to have both people bale out due to illness, but I was offered to come and have someone else "do" my hair. Now any woman will tell you, you don't want just anyone and I am African American so not everyone can "do" black hair. No special technique or anything but definitely different texture & treatment - so I kindly declined AND was not offered another appt. I called back in March 2008 because a new co-worker raved about her years of experience. This time because I wanted a cut & perm, I needed to get a call back so they could get the right appt set up WHAT THE #@#$@#$! I think the Gods are sending me a warning to STAY AWAY and I am!!! God bless all of you who have had a great experience there but I just don't get the hype! Smoke & Mirrors....

5 Stars: Feel Good, Look Good!!! (by austinexperience)

I was headed to Austin and was in need of a revival, a look revival, a me revival. It was my 50th birthday and I definitly wanted an experience to kick off yet another chapter in my life. A salon savvy friend of mine recommended Jackson Ruiz (an Aveda salon). I made an appointment for a cut and color, but got so much more! When I arrived I was taken to my colorist, Todd, who asked me a number of questions to get a feel for what I was looking for. I needed something that would require less maintenance, but would still be oustanding. She brought out the samples and recommended that I go darker (closer to my natural color) adding highlights of a softer blonde and red, which would define the frame my face more and acccentuate my eyes. I also met with my stylist , Charles, who spoke to me about what my goa was in a cut. Sassie, soft, fun, professional. A tall order, but I need versatillity to suit my lifestyle and personality. I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome! My color is perfect for my skin color and green eyes and my cut is everything I ask for. Did I mention that the shampoo was an experience in itself , relaxing and invigerating all in one, I got a wonderful hand massage during my cut , and was served some very refreshing fruit infused water. I have read other reviews on Jackson Ruiz, mentioning an "assembly line" feeling. Yes, many people service you in this salon - all specializing in their field. I have no issue with one who is a expert in color do what they are best at, then have another whose expertise is styling do my cut. The experience was so refreshing that I scheduled a facial and massage for the next day. Needless to say this was yet another wonderful experience. My facial had my skin feeling fresh & beaming and the massage was the BEST. They even refreshed my makeup afterward. No doubt the goal of this salon is to make you feel special. I left relaxed and feeling beautiful. Jackson Ruiz, Thank You! Revival accomplished!

I live in Georgetown and Breeze Salon really messed up my hair...anyway, I drove downtown to Jackson Ruiz Salon and Spa and the moment I walked in it was wonderful! Great service, super nice employees! Gorgeous salon. My hair was corrected and looked great! It's always scary to try a new salon...but I will make the drive again and again before I ever go up the street to Breeze.

I have recently moved to Austin from New York City where I got my hair cut at a fancy salon for the past 5 years. I was somewhat hesitant to try a new salon but I did I have never been happier. Mercedes at Jackson Ruiz is extremely talented. She gave be the best haircut I have ever had! I am truly grateful!

5 Stars: Love Love LOVE (by austinchic24)

After a few of my friends tried the salon and absolutely loved it, I decided to give it a try. I have long hair and keeping the length was really important to me but wanted something more flirty and fun! Well I can honestly say I got exactly what I wanted, and even more. I love my haircut and have gotten so many compliments on it. It looked good the first day and it still looks great a month later! They do specialize there, so the stylists that cut, only cut, and those that do color, only color. I only got a hair cut so for me this didn't present a scheduling problem, but I see where it could. My advice would be to call plenty in advance, the longer you wait the more likely they will be booked up. The location is good as well, right next to a coffee shop, ice cream shop, a super cute accessories boutique and Whole Foods. What more could you ask for?

I am young (22), and i admit that i look young - however this should not dictate the type of service i recieved my stylist didnt listen to a word i said and after 110 dollars for a highlight and a mens haircut i have ending up with something that i would never recommend to anybody, every employee including the receptionist had an extreme attitude problem be prepared for a pretentious staff

5 Stars: Loyal Customer for years... (by Trisha L.)

I find it troubling when I see reviews that are so out of line with the experiences that I've been having there for years. I think it's important to remember that in the service industry you're dealing with people- maybe they have off days, maybe there have been some personnel issues (which I'm sure were resolved in a timely manner). From the time I started seeing Alan at Jackson Ruiz about 4 years ago I experienced a complete transformation in my hair. I had never in my life been complemented on my hair and now four years later continue to receive complements on my hair regularly. What I appreciate most about my visits to this salon is that I know I'm dealing with an expert in the industry. I never go into this salon with a finite, preconceived notion of what I want my cut to look like. I leave it all up to them- What do I know about hair? The service has always been top-notch- I'm always offered some sort of refreshment by at least two people on staff, they generally meet me in the hall to greet me after I've changed and have always received the complementary scalp and hand massage. I don't always receive the make-up touch up, but have several times and usually if I don't it's because someone is already in the chair with the make-up artist (he's great too). I'm sure if it was something I really wanted- I could wait and they would accommodate me. It's my own consumer prerogative to leave without. Bottom Line- I spend more money than most if not all of my friends on my haircut but I find it 100% worth it. It's my vice and I just budget for that expense.

I love Jackson Ruiz Salon. Allen has been cutting my hair for years and he does an AMAZING job. I have never been disappointed! Marinana does my highlights and she is such a good colorist!!!! I highly recommend this place. I love the shampoos....very relaxing. You also get a free complementary hand massage and it's awesome. They have a great selection of Aveda hair products.

2 Stars: HORRIBLE stylist, good customer satisfaction manager (by ktjktj)

First of all, making an appointment for both a cut and color took a half hour! When I went in for my haircut with Terry, he didn't get to me until 25 minutes after my appointment time. Then, he barely listened to me when I told him what I wanted. It was my first time with him, so I expected him to ask me a lot of questions...he didn't. I specifically told him I wanted the ends razor cut...he didn't. I didn't love my cut, but I thought I'd give it a chance. I made an appointment a couple of days later with Terry to have my cut corrected. I went in with a graduated bob that ended nearly 2 inches below my chin. I told Terry I just wanted it tapered a little more in the back to make the angle more severe and a little weight taken off the ends. He just said "yeah, yeah, right, right" in a dismissive tone and went to work. He cut the back of my hair. Then I see him pick up the hair in front and I think he's going to texture it. Instead he cut 2 INCHES OFF OF MY HAIR! What stylist cuts off any significant length without even asking you?!? I had to let him cut the rest while I sat there trying not to cry. I went in with my hair in a short (1-inch) ponytail. I left with hair that barely meets in the back...no more ponytail. I have never had a less friendly stylist, either. The only good part of this story is that when I called later and explained what happened, the management was very kind. Not only did they reimburse my money, they also gave me a credit for a free haircut in their salon. I have no plans to go back there, but at least that's something. I truly hated the assembly-line aspect of their salon.

1 Stars: Could not get my appointment right (by Bonnie B.)

On a friend's recommendation, I tried Jackson Ruiz for a haircut and color. Making the appointment was like arranging an international summit on global warming since you must make an appointment with a colorist and a hair stylist. I did not want to come in on two different days, but thought I was accommidated with a back-to-back appointment in a realtive short amount of time. I confirmed the time and the date with the scheduler three times as I have a busy schedule and events before which I wanted this hair cut performed. However, when I showed on the day of the appointment, first they could not get my name right, then they informed me unapologetically, that my appointment was not for another week. I explained that I had confirmed the appointment date and time three times, and it could not be next week as that was event that I needed my hair cut before. Their response was if I could not make it next week, would like to reschedule for a time further out. They were completely unapologetic that they had made a mistake on the appointment and did not attempt to fit me in before my event. I cancelled the appointment, walked out and will not be back.

1 Stars: pretentious (by mandalynnwin)

I got a nice haircut, and that's about where the positives end. Apparentley the girl I talked to on the phone didn't think it was essential to put my appointment into the computer system to when I went in, the guy at the front desk could not find my appointment. HE was very nice about it and rescheduled me for later that day and told me the haircut would be comped b/c of the appointment mess-up, but it was still inconveniet and embarrassing. When I came back later I was treated like a child (I am 19) and felt belittled. My stylist even made some (in my opinion) insulting comments about my hair and dying it at home. Over all I felt as though they didn't think I was an important client b/c of my age and b/c I wasn't a rich, middle-aged woman.
Also, I had never had my hair cut in layers before and it hasn't been as healthy ever since. There was also some sales pressure. I won't go back.

1 Stars: assembly line service, pretentious atmosphere, way overpriced (by jcasofla)

My best friend went to this salon to have her hair colored for the first time in twelve years. When I saw her hair, I could barely tell she had any change at all. When I questioned her, she stated that she was unhappy with this very expensive service but was scared to do anything about it. After much coaxing, she went back and explained to the owner what the dissatisfaction was: not enough color change for $250.00. I was with her when she returned to have her hair redone like she had wanted. I was thinking of making an appointment myself since I had not had my hair professionally touched in years. What I witnessed was real disappointing. Although the staff was accommodating, no one was warm or friendly. In fact, the whole atmosphere was that of an assembly line. One person washes, another cuts while yet another colors. Not once did I hear that anyone was overly concerned that she was initially dissatisfied. Nor did anyone offer any incentive for either of us to return. This hardly seems like wise customer service, especially since I was a potential customer. After the whole experience, I would NEVER patronize Jackson-Ruiz, nor would I ever tell anyone to go there for anything. I think the owners need to get in touch with what makes a successful business last: outstanding customer service that creates lasting, loyal customers.

When I say I'm picky, I am picky - but this salon visit was great. I've been going to salons for a long time and I've never had a hair stylist do exactly what I wanted...until now. The overall experience was the best I ever had....great shampoos and I had a perfect blowdry by a young lady...I could tell she was new but really well trained......that's a first! Like everyone else she was nice and I felt comfortable the whole time. My color was perfect - thanks Wendy!, and I even made an appointment for a cut later this month.

5 Stars: This salon is the most awesome salon to the 10th power!!! (by cherrylove)

OMG! I just left Jackson Ruiz and it was the best visit ever! I called to schedule an appointment and with luck someone had just cancelled with Philip! I was so excited! I went in on my lunch and the first thing I noticed when I walked in was the smell....it's great! I was greeted by a girl at the front desk, named Stephanie, and she gave me a tour of the salon. She offered me beverages (even WINE, but I have to go back to work.. :( Anywho! I sat down with Philip and he asked me a million questions and was writing down everything I said.....he really wanted to make sure I got what I wanted....which is VERY important seeing that I have a sensitive scalp. I felt like I was getting VIP treatment!! Next, was the head massage....OMG....I promise you...I was not going to leave that chair! LOL! It felt so good.....I considered coming everyday just for that....LOL! I loved my cut and it was everything I heard it was going to be! Everyone was so attentive and catered to my needs. I am very, very active in my community and I plan on telling everyone about this....extravagant experience! I LOVE JACKSON RUIZ!!!

3 Stars: Avoid it (by mamadedamus)

I was such a fanatic of this salon. I went to the one on Lamar, and then I found the JR Salon closer to my house on Burnet, and I transferred there. It WAS great and cheaper! It was on my visit to the Burnet salon that I realized the Lamar salon NEVER offered me the complimentary scalp massage or makeup touch. BUT after 2 visits, I experienced awful service. I was out of the country and needed to cancel my appointment so I did it online via e-mail since I didn't have access to call from a phone. I NEVER received a response back. When I got back home, I received a letter stating that I had missed my appointment and wasn't charged, but I would be on the next visit. I had contacted them to resolve this so that the next time if I accidentally missed my appointment, I wouldn't be charged. At this time, the salon on Burnet was closed due to weather, and they told me they would find the e-mail and get back to me. I NEVER received a response back. Once again, I called a few days later to end this problem, and I received a message stating that I should have canceled by phone, and if I did do that, they were sorry for the problem. What is the purpose of an e-mail????? I then e-mailed the Lamar salon and received an automatic response of "thanks for the ..." I got over it and was hesitant to rebook, but when I did, I received a call a few days later to inform me that the appointment I booked needed to be moved and changed to another stylist because my stylist was busy with another client. I was fed up and tired with the run around. I then e-mailed a final statement to JR stating that I had a series of upsets and was fed up with the non-responsiveness of their salon and that I was giving up their salon and would not recommend it to anyone else. FINALLY, I received a personal e-mail; it was a little too late.

5 Stars: Ask for Judy (by sophie6686)

I just recently started going to JR and I love it. I highly recommend Judy because when shown a picture of a haircut she has the rare ability to actually cut your hair exactly like the picture. Judy?s cuts are cute the day of and a month later. Other staff members can be aloof at times, but the fabulous haircuts make up for any deficiencies in the staff.

3 Stars: Stop whining and be nice (by austexuke)

I am very pleased with my experiences at the JR Salon. My colorist does a great job. Everyone is very friendly and polite. I have NEVER had the negative experiences that some reviewers have written about. As for pushing the products, I do not feel pressured and do not buy anything I do not want to buy.

As for color, as in any salon - you need to be very specific about what you want after all you are the paying customer. I always get compliments about my color. It looks very natural.

The checkin desk is always friendly and helpful. Everyone smiles. I do think that some of the newbies that wash and style your hair are not the cream of the crop, especially on the styling side of things. They use too much product and do it their way.

I think that perhaps it is Austin that is getting a bit snooty ( Californianized!) and complaining about picly little things that people with no real problems in life tend to do. You need to remember that you are not the center of the universe and that you usually get treated the way you treat others - the good old golden rule comes into play. Be careful of what you write you are talking about peoples livelihoods here!

If you have the need to be seen, go to this salon. If you want a quality experience, this not the place for you.

They don't seem to have an ethic that is followed by the cut or shampoo staff. Lots of back biting and low brow response, including devisive behavior toward client service.

5 Stars: Best Salon in Town (by consumersavvy)

I just signed up with Citysearch to leave this message.

I read the last couple of reviews and they sound like terribly unhappy people. I've been going to Jackson Ruiz for several years, and while they are busy (who wants to go to a salon you can walk right into and get an appointment -scary) they are the best in Austin. I've been to several salons since I moved here and they are the most professional and caring. Trust me, I've been around and have been to salons and spas all over the world....I know what I'm talking about, I know the difference.

They don't take tips - no pressure in hurting someone's feelings, they serve wine during your hair service, and treat you with respect. I get my hands massaged and makeup done for free! On top of that, a couple of weeks ago a woman stopped me at Nieman Marcus and asked me who did my hair! Great colorists, Wendy, and hair stylists - Allen & Judy. You all make such a difference for me.

Not sure you can have a bad visit there....

5 Stars: Great Customer Service! (by jennifer_love)

This is one of the best salons I have ever been to. I don't understand the other reviews, the front desk people are so kind and very helpful. Where else can you get a hand massage, fabulous makeup and a wonderful haircut! Jackson Ruiz, that's where! I highly recommend this salon.

1 Stars: Horrible experience! Worst Aveda salon there is in Austin! (by jcook9775)

The front desk staff at this salon must hate their job! They are rude, pushy, and condescending. They look at you with contempt if you don't fit the "look" of the salon. The colorists at this salon are great. I was convinced this was my new salon...unitl I went to check out. I walked out in tears. I have never been so humiliated because I had changed my mind about purchasing a product. I'm sure I knew more about their product line than any of the front desk. Not only are they bitter people, they have no idea about their products! I love Aveda products and visit salons all over the U.S. I'm disappointed because this is the first time I've had a bad experience at an Aveda salon. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. There are much better alternatives.

Salon too "busy" to give adequate time to each client. Pushed through an assembly line. Unprofessional and rude staff. I see why they don't accept tips....they don't do ANYTHING to warrant a tip. This is not NYC, its Austin....they should treat clients as they would like to be treated.

2 Stars: Going, gone down hill (by scburns)

I have been a customer of JR downtown salon for years. Use to just rave about it and have sent at least 5 friends there. Now, I can't recommend the salon or stylists. Little touches like forgetting to ask if I want something to drink, forgetting my hand massage, no greeting whatsoever. It's almost like they are TOO busy now for the small touches that use to make me love this salon. My last visit: I was 10 mins. early. Checked in up front and received no hello, can I help you, nothing! I waited 20 mins. and then had to ask if I was forgotten. No one came to tell me my person was running 30 mins. behind. Both owners passed me and said nothing, not even a smile. My color was okay but someone else styled my hair. I clearly explained what I wanted and walked out with flat, greasy hair. I can't justify paying over 100.00 an appt. with the lack of attention to details and the lack of customer service to clients. Too bad, this salon USE to be the best in town.

5 Stars: I LOVE this salon (by jillypalmer)

I'm surprised by some of the reviews for Jackson Ruiz. Allen has been cutting my hair for over 4 years now, and I've never been disappointed. I look forward to the atmosphere, talking with the staff, getting pampered and getting a fabulous hair cut. Not only is Allen a phenomenal hair stylist, but he's also a man of integrity. I would (and do) recommend this salon to everyone I run across.

I've lived in Austin for 24 years and have visited too many salons to count. I won't trust my hair with anyone else.

1 Stars: It is SUCH a shame! (by thacakes)

I have amazing hair.. I was born with it. 5 years ago, I made an appointment with Allen, the owner at Jackson Ruiz and he changed my life. The cut i got was amazing, and worth every penny (90 dollars). Slowly but surely, the prices increased, but what is money if it makes you feel that great and confident, right? Well, Allen got more and more successful, and more and more busy, and by last year or so, didn't even bother to look at my hair while he was cutting it so that instead, he could micromanage his slaves of interns. I was still in denial at this point. Then the high pressure sales that Jackson Ruiz had avoided for many years became incessant. The last time I was there, they went so far as to put at minimum 200 dollars worth of the products they used in my hair into a basket and shoved it in my face as I was paying. I was so put off, but still, I believed it was all worth it. Then, a friend of mine and an employee of Jackson told me how Allen had treated her over the past few years and I couldn't support his business any longer. To make matters worse, I recently got a letter informing me that he would be raising his rates to 140!! That is outrageous considering he rushes so much through a haircut that it's uneven and unhealthy looking. I went to Topaz today after a reccomendation, and for much less than half the price I got a 10 times better hair cut. Trust me, as a 5 year client, it's not what it's made out to be. The staff is rude, curt and the service really isn't worth the price. Sorry to say, that the greed and expansion of this salon has really put me and several other regular clients off to the point that if they don't do something to change their practices, they'll likely be in some financial trouble.

I got the best haircut I've ever had here. Terry is wonderful and the prices are very competitive. They make recommendations for products that will work for you but have never 'pushed' me to purchase any. And they have great hours.

1 Stars: Avoid at all costs. (by macal224)

Please read to avoid a disaster. Spend your money at a place where you feel welcome and there are courteous staff members that are eager to greet and assist you. In my opinion they should get the management together and retrain the staff so they can hire quality people and try to rectify some issues. This salon is lacking in so many areas and I hope that they will not stay in business long with their current situation. I was greeted by the receptionist with an attitude and then she just said yes out loud. I kept waiting for the "how can I help you" to follow. Then, I got the world's worst haircut. I repeat do not make the same mistake.

3 Stars: who is the best stylist of them all? (by emmapae)

I had my haircut there with a few stylists and the haircuts were okay. Beautiful space and I adore AVEDA but not much a connection.
In my mind I tought that I was merely communicating what I wanted in a haricut nothing more, nothing less. The response I received was rather cold and I felt like I was invited to feel bad.
To make things worse, I ran into a stylist at the grocery store later that week and she asked if I liked the haicut becasue the hairdresser who cut my hair apparently went in their breakroom after he cut my hair to vent about how difficult it was to deal with me.
So moral of the story is, if you want to gripe about your clients who pay at least $100/ haircut
behind their backs in the breakroom, keep it there! shame, shame
I feel embarassed for you!!

1 Stars: Warning Trainers at Hand!!! (by realstylist)

First time I went the "stylist" could not get my layers even and symmetrical. After spending much exhaust and toil of my time trying to explain to the manager the unacceptable cut that was done on my hair. They set me up with a trainer. And I can't say the cut improved at all. So, I ended up wasting my money, and then having to go to the another salon to get it fixed. Bottom line. Don't waste your time or money?

5 Stars: Finally--a no pressure Aveda salon!!! (by arm102)

My friend who has been getting her hair cut at Jackson Ruiz (downtown) for years, finally convinced me to try out JR. I have been going to Avant for 3 1/2 years where the people have gotten snootier and snootier and I was dissatisfied with my hair color almost every time I walked out of there. So...I finally branched out and tried JR...and am soooo glad I did! I loved everything about the experience--from the woman who greeted me when I walked in the door to the no tipping policy at the end. I was completely satisfied with my colorist and resulting color...she seriously listened to my wants (and even took notes!) before she began instead of playing with my hair while pretending to listen to me in the mirror (like always happened at Avant). I loved everything about my experience and I hope that you will consider this salon.

Everyone at Jackson Ruiz is very friendly and helpful. The girl that did my waxing was fast but still paid attention to detail. I was very pleased with the service and was then suprised when I was told that they are a No Tip salon. I was told that if I was happy with the service, rather than tip them, they'd appreciate positive word of mouth.
3 Stars: rude and unprofessional behavior (by miaec)

I have been going to Jackson Ruiz for two years now and have been generally satisfied. Over the past few months, however, my appointments were canceled or re-arranged to accommodate the stylist's schedule. On my most recent visit everything seemed fine; after my hair was washed, I returned to the stylist and was treated as if I had done something horribly rude and offensive. It was strange, very uncomfortable, and deeply unsettling. I am not a hypersensitive or neurotic person, nor am I a rude or unprofessional person. I want professional treatment, even if the stylist, in this case the co-owner, is having a bad day. I feel fairly sad about this, as if I were blind to things in the past (like the stylist's serious dislike of me??). I am looking for a new salon and stylist.

5 Stars: Could not be happier! Philip is fantastic! (by gardeningtara)

I have been going to JR for almost 2 years and have used 3 or 4 different stylists, very happy with all, but have stuck with Philip for over a year. He is great with my long curly hair. My daughter, whose head is a mass of cowlicks, has board straight fine hair, has been seeing him for almost as long and you would never know that we ever had problems with her hair. All of the staff is friendly, knowledgable and always will to answer any question. Not wild about the new smocks for customers. Way too bulky. Wasn't crazed about the pedicure that I had there. The staff in the mani/pedi area were too busy chatting with each other, rather than paying attention to the customer. Felt like a mani-in-the-mall experience rather than a Spa -was a year ago though so could be better now.

4 Stars: Color/Highlights amazing (by ajz78)

I've been going to Jackson Ruiz for about a year now--I absolutely love my colorist, Jason, who now works at the Burnet Road location. He is amazing with color, and I have never had so many compliments or the questions:
1--Your hair is beautiful...and then when i tell them I get a little highlight help,
2--Where do you go and who do you go to?

The prices are getting a little steep - a partial with Jason is $110. BUT, that price includes tax and tip, plus you get a head massage and a hand massage as well. It's worth it, I promise. Jason hasn't let me down yet.

I haven't found a hairstylist that I am particularly attached to at JR...still looking...

I've been going for a few years now and I couldn't be happier. I have curly hair and I've never had a better cut - Bianca is the best. She fills up quickly so you have to book in advance, but it's worth the wait. I get my color done by Mariana and she's great too! The wait for color's not bad - usually a week or two. I've gone from place to place looking for a good color specialist and I will never go to anyone else. I've had more compliments on my hair in the few years that I've been going to Jackson Ruiz than I've probably had in my life. They have a no tipping policy and they give free hand massages while you get your hair done.

1 Stars: If you do go, see Bianca (by das_ding)

I would not recommend Jackson Ruiz because of their rude and snobby stylists. But Bianca is a sweet, friendly girl with tons of talent. She is the only reason I've been going for 4 years. I've had appointments with other stylists(because they over book Bianca all the time) and felt like a second class citizen with every one of them. I had my makeup done there for my bridal portraits, but the artist rushed through the application, removed the makeup twice, even threw down one of the brushes because he was frustrated. When he was done he said "This is the best I can do with what I have to work with"! Because he had used so much makeup remover and rubbed my face so much, my eyes looked red and swollen! I removed the makeup on the way to the portraits. :-(

3 Stars: nice salon, stuck up stylist (by jpowler)

the front desk was very nice, but as soon as my stylist came to get me, my experiance started to go downhill. She made me feel like she i was taking up to much of her precious time. After the cut she just started grabbing things off the shelf and didn't even tell me what she grabbed or how to use it. When i tried to ask another stylist about the products, he looked at me like he was to good to help and with a smug smile, directed me to the front desk for help. Turns out that he was one of the owners and he didn't feel the need to help me. So if you want snobby stylists, who talk down to you, jackson ruiz is for you, if you want actually feel good about yourself, go to another aveda salon.

5 Stars: Perfection in Salon Service and Management (by Christin A.)

I moved out of Austin 2 years ago but I'll never forget my days at Jackson Ruiz. First of all, Austin is a town that thinks its much better than it is and many salons there label themselves as "all that" but they are really lame when compared to big city hair salons in NY, LA, etc. HOWEVER, Jackson Ruiz is not that way. Jackson Ruiz is a total world class hair salon - from the friendly receptionists to the friendly and accessible staff to the very high high quality services to the beautiful layout of the place and convenient location, you will not be disapointed by a thing at Jackson Ruiz. It is the ONLY place to go in Austin and one of the best hair salons I've ever been to anywhere.

PROS: friendly receptionists friendly and accessible staff, great services
CONS: NONE

5 Stars: wonderful (by chicago2austin)

I have been going to Jackson Ruiz for 3 yrs, Bianca cuts my hair and is wonderful. The atmosphere is relaxing and I love going there. The little touches like scalp and hand massage, make up touch up, make it special. Also I get my eyebrows done there and that has also been a great experience. I highly recommend Jackson Ruiz.

1 Stars: a bit bumbed (by smashcake77)

I have to say, although JR has the 'traditional' aveda salon demeanor (clean, smells nice, attractive) I was not as happy with my experience as I had hoped. The hair cut I got was about the skill level of a hairschool student that I ended up hating and growing out for a year, plus I felt like I was just another name on the schedule to my stylist. The front desk was professional, and much more personable than the stylist. Maybe this stylist was having a bad day (understandable) but there's something to be said for 'having a personality'. I feel like this salon sacrifices it's 'personality' for high priced grouchiness. This was such a disappointment seeing as how I was really looking forward to being 'pampered' since I had JUST had a baby and needed some relaxation and to feel 'pretty'.Totally impersonal!!! Maybe even, dare I say, 'snobby' without good cause.

4 Stars: Mixed feelings (by oldwestaustin)

I have been going to Jackson Ruiz for almost a year and am sad to say I'm going to be switching salons. It was great for a haircut, but I have less enthusiasm for my experience with highlights. Maybe I was trying to get my hair to do something it's not capable of, but after several attempts to make it work with my colorist there, I'm reluctantly looking elsewhere. Two awesome things about Jackson Ruiz: free hand massages, and a no-tipping policy. It makes it a truly relaxing experience.

5 Stars: Perfection! (by cainsf)

Top service, great atmosphere, EXCELLENT highlights, genuine people, fair prices given the excellent value. I live in SF now but still dearly miss this haven in Austin. I've practically never felt more at home at a salon in my life. Wendy who does color is the sweetest girl in the world - and amazingly talented!!!

5 Stars: Tammy (by tscottpie)

When I used to get my hair relaxed one of the owners did my hair and my daughters's hair also.
She is one of the best beautician's around and has spun off and created a beautiful salon with a beautiful atmosphere. My daughter is grown up now and has happily visited since Jackson Ruiz opened the doors. I just drive by and see that the place is and looks like what people that deserve a bit of pampering and care desire in a salon! (I have
locs now and love fred fekkai products at present).

Best of Luck and a Long History
to Jackson and Ruiz!

I had been searching for a good salon for a long time, and Jackson Ruiz fully met and exceeded my expectations. Alan cut my hair, and he did an absolutely amazing job and truly seemed to care about what he was doing. Jackson Ruiz gives amazing attention to detail and strives to provide every customer with a wonderful experience. DEFINITELY recommended.

5 Stars: Topping Them All (by ccrider)

I had been to several top rated salons here but couldn't find someone who could handle thick, curly hair. J-R had no problem! The style was current and the relaxing atmosphere, hand massage, and shampoo massage just made my day. Ask for Judi. She's got it all when it comes to knowing what to do with hair. Everyone else there is so friendly. It was great.

3 Stars: Great Styles, no class (by samina512)

The stylists are AWESOME, talented, and artistic individuals....one of the owners, Ms. Jackson, is a businesswoman. She cancelled my appointment to accomodate her 3 month in advance schedule, and could not so much as phone me to let me know. Overbooking doesn't mean cutting clients out. I was getting engaged that weekend and the appointment setter said I had never made an appointment. I sent her the original email I asked for the appointment date on, they responded with a time and confirmation, then claimed I never made an appoint. They ruined a very important weekend. I expect more out of Evelyn because she is an operating partner, but she is rude, inconsistant, and I don't think I will ever go back there again. I'd rather go to Bella where I am treated with a lot more courtesy.
**Brides to be, beware** you have been warned...

5 Stars: Earthy feel and exceptional service (by jedevnel)

I visited Jackson Ruiz as a last resort. All of the stylish salons in Austin had let me down and I figured I would have to give this salon a shot. Bianca cut my hair and it was fabulous. This Aveda concept salon provides much more than anyone else. I have been to Anne Kelso, Aziz , Salon 505 and even Toni and Guy. Jackson Ruiz tops them all with their complementary scalp and hand massages and when your complete and thought no one could be any better than they, they offered me a complementary make up spruce. This salon deserves the best rating in Austin, it deserves it.

5 Stars: Want to be pampered? (by sharonw)

I had gotten a very bad haircut and decided I would try a nice salon. I picked Jackson Ruiz and I am so happy I did. The shampoo experience alone is enough but then you get a nice hand massage while getting a great cut. I always walk out feeling pretty and look forward to my next visit. Best of all...no tipping. It's worth it!!

Every experience in the 1 1/2 years I have been going to JR has been nothing short of life changing. As my fiance says, "Everyone is so nice there.
5 Stars: The Ultimate in Relaxation (by ryder96)

I have tried many, many salons and spas in Dallas and Austin looking for the one that had it "all" and have finally found it! Jackson Ruiz has the most welcoming faces and relaxing surroundings. Everyone is extremely laid back and you never feel like a small fish in a big pond. The professionalism and expertise of every staff member is unparalleled and the cost is extremely reasonable. From the small touches such as a no cell phone policy, cold water w/ cucumber slices in the waiting area, and perfect soothing lighting, to a huge plus - NO TIPS allowed, Jackson Ruiz Salon is a must try for everyone!

The salon is beautiful, very relaxing and it smells great. The staff is very helpful and they always make me feel welcome.
The cost of the services include the tip so I end up spending about the same as I would pay at any salon in town. I always recommend this salon to anyone looking for a new salon.
