For the 50 years our family has been pleased to serve Austin, we have always strived to bring our patrons fine food. We pride ourselves in using the very best ingredients, combined in recipes from our native Mexico. Every dish is expertly prepared & served quickly and courteously. You may come to El Gallo because of our hard-to-find specialties including 50's style Tex-Mex enchiladas or for the light lunches, served from 11am to 2:30pm Tue-Fri every week. Perhaps you enjoy the mariachis who perform during dinner, or our outdoor seating on the patio. But we like to think it's a unique blend of great food, excellent service & fun atmosphere that will bring you here for the first time and will bring you back again and again! Banquet & On-Site Catering services and To-Go orders are available for your special event or office party. We hope you'll agree that "El Gallo es especial."

Take a ride back in time when entering this border style restaurant that has been bringing authentic Mexican food to Austin for over 50 years. Low level Tejano music helps contain the atmosphere. The walls show off historically significant murals with warm, dark, colors and red Saltillo tiles truly bring the old world sense of decor into the 21st century. By being directly across the street from St. Edwards, this location has been a favorite of students and parents alike but patrons come from all over town, including the eastside. Plates are large and most options are combination plates offering a taste of many selections, including surf and turf.

Key Points

  • Austin Owned For 50 Years
  • Lunch Specials Tue-Fri 11-2:30
  • Mariachis During Dinner

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Over 10 lunch specials are offered weekdays between 11am and 2pm and are all priced under $8. The Weight Watchers special is a chicken dish served with a side of rice and steamed vegetables.
  2. The Extras - A banquet room can accommodate up to 90 people and catering is available for parties of 25 or more. Deposit and reservations are requested three weeks in advance for this service.
  3. Fun Fact - Goat has been served in Mexico for centuries. Try their cabrito al horno, which is baked young goat specially seasoned El Gallo style with Spanish sauce. If you have never tried Cabrito, this is the place to start.

If I had to pick a Mexican restaurant in Austin it would be this one. Gallo pups, alambres, puntas de res, Pescado a la Veracruzana and dulce de leche cheesecake. Set menus are quite affordable and splendid. What an "experiencia"

I enjoyed this place. We went on a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed, but the wait wasn't too bad. The also had a mariachi bad walking around. The atmosphere was fun and the service was good. The food was very good - I really liked their salsa.

Ratings_icons THE BEST EVER!!!!

pamela1cam

This restaurant has been our favorite for 20+ years!!! You can't go wrong with any of their menu choices. If your a hot sauce fanatic like me you will definitely not be disappointed. It's to DIE for!! All of their food items including tortillas and chips are hand made. The staff is very courteous and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The owners take pride in their establishment and it's like going to see family when we go there. Give it a try and don't listen to any negative comments on this blog. They have the BEST cheese enchiladas in all of Austin!!! You won't be sorry. Oh yeah...one more thing...they don't use any preservatives or MSG. IT'S ALL NATURAL and ALL HOMEMADE AUSTIN!!!!!

Pros: Best Hot Sauce/Chips and Enchiladas...everything!

Cons: None

Ratings_icons A++ Cheese Enchiladas

dkmaustin

As a native Texan, I have to comment on the person who said the cheese enchiladas are terrible. I'll bet that person is not from here. First, cheese enchiladas SHOULD be soft and creamy, not like a lump of melted cheddar. Melted cheese is a bit greasy and again, it should be. The combination of the gloriously soft and tasty cheese with the perfect chile con carne is the very, very best in town. The other food is great too, but nobody else gets the cheese enchiladas as perfect as El Gallo.
The service is friendly and prompt, even when they are very busy. I've been in many more locally praised and expensive restaurants in town where the service is both terrible and snobby at the same time!
This restaurant is a great value!!

Ratings_icons Great Go-To TX Mex Joint!

lahrlett

I LOVE El Gallo. Their chips and salsa are great. The salsa actually has a spicy flavor to it and it doesn't taste like a can of tomatos. I LOVE thier cheese enchiladas. They are greasy and cheesey and hot the way an enchilada should be. it is never crowded and the drinks are pretty good and cheap. The parking is great too!

Pros: Fast seating and service. Great, cheap eats and drinks. Good salsa.

Ratings_icons Good C&S, terrible enchiladas.

123club

Good atmosphere. Good chips and salsa. However, the worst enchiladas I have ever had. Maybe other items are great but these are not (cheese, was more like velveeta). Rice was tasteless and burnt from being in the oven.

Wouldn't recommend with so many other great places to eat at in Austin.

Ratings_icons Hooked on first bite!

ema288

El Gallo has quickly become my boyfriend and I's favorite restaurant. As a Hispanic, I can be very critical in regards to Tex-Mex and every Saturday my boyfriend and I make it a point to try a new TXMX restaurant for lunch. We came across El Gallo one Saturday and after our first bite of chips and salsa we knew we were hooked. They by far have the best chips and salsa I have ever tasted!!! It was a solid medium heat with the right amount of chunkiness. The waitress told us that they are both made in house every day. I was also in love with their Mango Margarita which tasted fresh and delicious. Since the first visit, we have been back countless times as our tastebuds are constantly craving their food.

Pros: food, service, location, free pralines with the check

Cons: NONE

Ate at El Gallo last year when visiting Austin. Plan to eat there again this year on a return trip. This is the best Mexican restaurant and atmosphere I have ever been to. Nice, quiet, romantic, yet suitable for families with children. Staff was wonderful. Excellent service and even better food.

Pros: Everything about this place is a pro.

Ratings_icons Best House Margarita's

craftychick

We go to El Gallo all the time and we just love it! The food is always consistent, the house margaritas are the way to go, the owners pleasant and the location and parking are always convenient . There is no shortage of mexican food in Austin, so it boils down to a matter of personal taste, but we really enjoy El Gallo - give it a try!

Pros: House Margarita's, fast seating, music on weekends

Cons: None

Ratings_icons the best

djwammyt

I am a weekly regular there - it's that good. I rarely eat mexican food anywhere else, because if I'm going to eat mexican, why not just go to El Gallo? The cheese enchiladas are my favorite - they just ooze with cheese. And the queso is my favorite in town. The staff is really, really friendly, too.

The best I've ever tasted with it's white melted cheese mixed in with the chicken and deep fried, and all the trimmings.
