I would highly recommend this vet for services and boarding. After having a horrible experience with another vet, this facility treated my animals like royalty. Whenever I need to board my dog, I get his 'suitcase' ready and he knows where he is going and is so excited!!!! The staff is so wonderful and kind - so when I pick him up he is calm and you can tell he had a great time with lots of attention. If any treatment is required, we discuss it and I know exactly what will be done and the costs are gone over completely - no surprises.
And while they are wonderful with dogs, they are also excellent with cats. My older cat was recently sick with an unknown fever. He was treated as delicately as a child - received proper medicine, followup, and was hand fed by the staff several times per day. And during those days when we didn't know if he was going to make it, they were there with kindness and hugs and not only comforted my animal, but me as well.
Do not hesitate to send your animal here for anything!

Do not take your animal to this clinic! We had the most awful experience with this clinic. We recently moved to Bedford and needed shots for our dog. We were going out of town and were pleased to find out they also provided boarding. We decided to board our dog and were told they would give our dog the shots later after dropping him off. We picked up our dog on the following Monday to find out the charges were much higher than quoted, and they performed services that were not approved or discussed. We were charged well over $300.00 for 4 nights of boarding and shots. Come to find out they charge by the day not by the night as any other boarding facility we have used. We were also not very happy with the way we were treated when we were picking up our dog. I use Hartz Flea Guard on my dog regularly but they claimed he had fleas and treated him for fleas! I have never seen any fleas on this dog! By Thursday our dog was sick and coughing horribly and coughing up flem. Our dog has never been sick so we did not know what was wrong. Our daughter had previously worked at a boarding facility and told us she believed our dog had "kennel cough" We called the vet and told them and they said we could bring him in at 9:30am the next day. I took him in and was treated like I had done something wrong, they were very rude and un sympathetic toward me and my dog. They kept him all day and finally at 4pm we got a call to let us know we could pick our dog up at 4:30pm
My husband went to pick him up, and was treated just as rudely as I was when I dropped him off. They charged us $73.00 and did not care that we just had spent over $300. As far as they were concerned they had no responsibilty whatsoever! The worse part about the whole experience was they gave my husband medicine and told him we should give it to our dog twice a day until gone. My husband asked them if they had given the dog any medicine they said "no, that would have been an extra charge"!!!! They kept him all day and never gave him anything!!! He coughed all day I'm sure based on what we heard the previous night!

This vet only cares about how much they can charge not the care and concern for animals. They are definitely not concerned with repeat business.

We will never take our dog there again and would not recommend this place to anyone.

The staff is super friendly. The doctors seem smart. Every time i go in there, i come out pretty happy. I like the fact that they don't push things that my pet doesn't need. They do tell me what they think my pets need, but if i can't afford everything or if i don't want to leave my pet there for long, they make a revised plan. Anyway, great place for me and my pets. Also i love the fact that they give some of the shots for free if i pay for an exam. Who ever heard of free shots? I only had to spend 50 for the exam and i gott a free rabies and distemper, thats pretty awesome. ill be back! thanks guys

The staff is always so patient with our dogs and willing to go the extra mile. The service is outstanding, and the follow-up calls are an added bonus. They have worked with us to solve perplexing problems with our dogs' health and never get tired of our questions and concerns. They are very family-friendly, and our dogs love eeryone who works there!!

We recently adopted two dogs from the Bedford Animal Control facility. Harwood Oaks was close, so we decided to utilize their facility.

Dr. Jim Roberts was thorough, knowledgable, & explained concerns to us, advising us of his recommendations for treatment. One of our newly-adopted friends was heartworm positive, so he explained the process of treating her & we started the treatment the following day. Next we saw Dr. Garrett & found him to be thorough, knowledgable & competent as well. Front desk, Lauren, was very pleasant, competent to the extent required, & referred us to the vet tech when our questions exceeded her knowledge.

Price...very acceptable.

Keep in mind that each of us have individual limits as to what is reasonable, required, financially. Heartworm treatment on a newly adopted dog is expensive...but, we have found that the financial outlay is a small investment toward the love and affection received!

I was really surprised to see some of the reviews written here..... I thought I was looking at the wrong clinic because I have never heard of Dr. Simpson....then I looked at the dates. I have been a client at this clinic for years....I had several concerns years ago with one of the other vets and asked to talk to the office manager and Dr. Peterein. They listened to my concerns and I began to make appointments with Dr. Peterein only. I wasn't concerned anymore as Dr. Peterein took excellent care of both cats.
Several years passed, and the person/people about whom I had concerns left....I continued to see Dr. Peterein for regular checkups. Recently, scheduled appointments were pushed aside for pressing health issues in my 17 year old cat. I had to see Dr. Garrett as an emergency (which they worked in with no problem) as Dr. Peterein is only in Mon and Thurs. Dr. Garrett was kind and thorough. He answered all my questions and listened to my concerns. I followed up with Dr. Peterein (not because I didn't trust Dr. Garrett, my cat needed a follow up and I was more familiar with Dr. Peterein). She recommended several options to treat my cat. Her approaches were more holistic than Western (Dr. Garrett's approach), and Dr. Peterein and I talked at length about both approaches. I felt valued and respected as an owner and client.
She and her clinic manager, Kendy, have been patient, caring, and concerned- for both myself and my animal. I never felt pressured to purchase expensive tests, although after trying some of the other less expensive approaches, I realized I should have done these to begin with. They have worked with me in every way possible. They are providing a service, so I expect to have to pay for those services. I ask many questions before deciding anything...maybe others didn't.
I am now in the office every other week for cold laser treatments for my cat. She has made a wonderful turn around in attitude, and I realize now she was in pain and I didn't realize it. I was skeptical of the treatments, but now recommend them whole heartedly. While nothing will "cure" her kidney condition, the quality of her life has been improved and I can enjoy her last months [hopefully year(s)] with her.
Please don't pay attention to old reviews....THIS staff (from the front desk, to techs, to vets, to managers) are caring, concerned, patient, and treat animals through new and traditional methods....be an educated pet owner...don't be pressured....Dr. Peterein and staff will help you through the emotional reactions to true veterinary care for your furry family members....

As someone who has worked at this clinic I totally understand the concerns being voiced and would like to say:
1. Dr. Simpson has not worked at this clinic since sometime in 2008.
2. There have been 2 doctors, Dr. Roberts and Dr. Garrett working there for the year of 2009 with the occasional exception of a Sat. morning relief vet when needed.
3. The staff has been more or less stable since the beginning of 2009 and are all well educated including one registered technician and two nursing school students.
4. You get a "free" HEALTHY pet exam from the shelters. That includes a free exam for your non-sick pet and if you ask an estimate for a spay/neuter will be provided and you will get a free puppy package. I believe this is intended to introduce you to the clinic. Unfortunately, if your pet is sick and requires medication, etc... you should expect to be billed.
With that having been said I know that everyone who has been at this clinic over the last year strives to provide the best care possible for your pet. I would hope to see better reviews from the end of 2008 on since that is when I believe that some of these issues should have been resolved.
p.s. I'm not a doctor or the office manager; I just feel bad for the people who have had a previously bad experience but hope that in the future maybe I will see mostly good experiences :)

I had a good experience with my dog when we took her for her puppy wellness exam. We used a coupon in the paper for all her first year shots and medicine.
Our puppy was a "Kroger" dog, we got her from someone selling them in front of a Kroger's. She was full of worms (which is normal for puppies) but then became ill with giardia. which they diagnosed and treated right away. At one exam when I mentioned she was scooting her bottom on the floor, they expressed her anal glands right away for free.
We found the administration staff friendly and knowledgeable. Our main experience was with the vet tech, who had a very good "bedside" manner. when I asked for a pricing on spaying, I was given an itemized list, but $500 was out of my budget. I got my dog spayed at a low cost clinic in Ft. Worth.
Although I was content with their services, I have not received any postcards for updating her shots. Of course responsibility goes to the pet owner for keeping their animals up-to-date.
As for the owners who adopted their animals at the shelters, they should have taken their animals back to the shelters where they adopted them if the animals were sick. The animal shelter should be able to help adoptive parents.
After reading the reviews it goes to show, "caveat emptor" buyer beware, is true. Only by being fully informed and knowledgeable, can a person make decisions about any type of service.

I adopted a young cat from the Euless pound, and they said they have a deal with this place that would give me a lot of free services, so I went straight over there. When I walked out, my charges totaled $148. They said that the cat had tape worms, but I think she had already been treated and she just had some left in her hair. I still paid for that treatment, plus some other tests and shots. A few weeks later the cat (female) seemed to be going into heat, so I called and they said bring her in for an exam to check it out. I got a $75 bill that time, just to be told they didn't know if she was in heat, and some booster shots. Finally decided to have her fixed, and since this place had done so much already and had the records, I took her in. It was supposed to be free, but I ended up paying more than $50 because she was in heat. I found it amusing that someone else said the records indicated their cat was a dog. They have an older nurse there, and during one visit she said "good dog" to my cat. Then on the paper work for the operation, she put "dog" instead of "cat." But that's minor compared to what followed. A few days after the surgery my cat's incision opened, and since it was on the weekend I took her to the emergency clinic. I had to pay $100 for them to staple up the incision because Harwood Oaks used surgical glue on the outside instead of stitches. Almost two weeks after surgery and the poor cat is not healing. I take her back, and they basically leave it up to me if I want to let them do another surgical procedure "to see what's wrong." Time for a second opinion. It's costing me some more money, but I think she's finally in good hands somewhere else, at Hartland Cat Hospital. Aside from calling the operation a bad job, the vet there pointed out an internal suture thread was hanging out.

The receptionists at Harwood Oaks are kind of rude, and during one visit it was really busy (dogs everywhere) and there was only one lady there to handle everything. I had to wait 30 minutes just to pay my bill! I won't be back.

Every time I go to this vet I see a different doctor and staff. The vet told me my dog might have cancer and I was devastated. The vet and staff told me, "I don't know what to tell you". COLD AND NOT COMPASSIONATE AT ALL! I am taking my dog to someone else for a second opinion. I won't go back.

This facility performs procedures that are not needed and that not explained clearly to the pet owner. When called for information on pricing, they do not include everything in their quote....they get you to come into their facility and the pricing changes begin. Customer service, patient care, and plain old honesty and integrity are not part of their mission....it is all about making money. When asked to explain their actions, they simply don't care enough to do so. After all, they got paid up front and are not concerned about repeat business. The front office staff, although nice, was disorganized....I was told to come in only to arrive and find out the "doctor" was not available, I was given the wrong medicine, I was not informed about the prices of their services. One expects a physician (working on animals or humans) to be concerned about the patient, explain what might take place, offer suggestions about what to do, tell you if something is not in the best interests of the patient, be upfront and honest about things, assess the overall picture of the patient, and just do the right thing. Harwood Oaks Animal Clinic does just the opposite. They seem to have an office full of patients. Perhaps I just visited on an off day. I've given them every opportunity to make things right and they refuse to....one has to wonder if it was just an off day or more representative of their business as a whole.

I was still new to the DFW area when my ferret began vomitng and having diarrhea. My dog/cat vet admitted they didn't know ferrets very well. So I started calling around and this place told me they saw exotics. After driving all the way out there they said they'd like to take some x-rays, of course we agreed. When we came back to pick her up we found out the doctor had sedated my vomiting ferret and let us take her home. She aspirated overnight and died the next day on the way to an AEHNT.

We took our cat here for vaccinations and surgery- and were disappointed with the way things went. The vaccination paperwork says our male cat is a female dog! We asked to have it changed and the desk girl said she "really had a lot of things to do now," that we could bring it back later and she would change it. We found when we got home, that the cat's medication- antibiotics for after surgery- were not in the sack, and there were no instructions with the pain medication.

PROS: great detail on the billing
CONS: poor medication management, poor records keeping

My husband and I used to LOVE bringing our Lab here but as the months go by we are starting to see a horrible change in the admin staff. The vet that we see is Dr Kim and she is awesome!! She is always really nice and helpful. We love her but will not go back due to the admin staff. We feel like they don't know whats going on half the time and get rude with you when they forget to do something. We always ask for them to cut our dogs nails when we board him and 90% of the time when we pick him up we are waiting on them to have them cut. Its just the little things that they aren't doing any more that don't give us that welcoming feeling anymore.

They did the surgery and everything was great and when we went to take her home they said " well she needs her teeth pulled- they won't come out on their own" This would have been another 300 to 400 hundred dollars. We said we would have to think about it and they kept pressuring us into it. We finally told them no and left. Over the next two days, she lost the two teeth that they said needed to be pulled when she was chewing on a bone. We have not been back since.

They did a good job with the surgery and she healed quickly and they were nice. But I don't agree with suggesting things to customers when the dog doesn't need them.

A very good vet diagnosed my dog's mystery illness.
She was very sick...he mentioned dead animals. Five days before, she grabbed a dead possum that was put out for trash!
The vet, a experienced, a "good ol' boy" type, gave the right meds, my Dalmatian was better in a couple of days.
$100 for visit on SAT., lab test, shot, and meds is cheap!

At a Grapevine clinic I was GOUGED for ear cleaner (tho I told vet I had 2 at home!) & antibiotic (he could have given older, cheaper one). At Grapevine they overpriced meds for profit.

So I am pleased with care at Harwood and as a nurse find the care good and cost reasonable.

PROS: Reasonable prices - Saturday AM clinic.
CONS: You might not get the same doc each time.

Hardwood Oaks Animal Clinic is a great place to take your dog or cat for any of it's medical needs. We have been taking all our animals there for years. They have a very friendly staff that makes you and your animal feel at home and comfortable. The staff treats the animals very well and the vet does an excellent job treating the animals. They have ample parking and the prices are good and competitive with other vet clinics in the area that do the same sort of business.

PROS: Great staff
CONS: Price sometimes a little high

Harwood Oaks Animal Clinic was owned by a lady named Chyel Petern that was nice and willing to talk to you and help you. Now she made enough money she does not work there, she hires other vets and they are always changing including receptionist they do not know anything. You will now go in circles tring to get answers and always get different answers.

Upon moving to the DFW area I contacted this office for treatment and flea medications for my dog. The prices were very high for their services and for medications. The waiting area was not clean and it smelled. Employess were not caring and there was no acknowledgment upon arrival. I will not return to this clinic nor would I recommend it.
