Colorful Thai offerings stand out against the dark paneled walls, blond-wood booths and two dozen tables. Bangkok City attracts a mixed crowd at night, when casually dressed families dine on pad thai next to the nightlife set. The restaurant offers standard dishes such as green curry and garlicky fried fish, as well as house specialties such as Volcano chicken, deep-fried and served with chili sauce and steamed vegetables.

Good food at a very good price but...not as kind as we expected.

by Gloria P. | insider Insider | Rank: 21,398

We were a party of 7 people, three of them children. We were very excited to eat Thai food so we went there as I had been before and I loved the food. The food was excellent but the lady (in her fifties) was really unkind with us. Perhaps she does not like children, perhaps we were supposed to make a reservation (there was plenty of empty spaces when we arrived) I wonder what we did wrong but she was in a hurry with us, she would not listen and she did not show her best towards us. We/I decided not to come back any more.

good food

by Tom S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,467

This restaurant has been here for a long time, as I been told. However, they have changed management a few time - that brough me back for another try. It is worth to try and I love it much better than a few yrs back - easy, cozy setting, and enjoy it - but parking lots are so tight

Bangkok City

by La Vi B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,563

I took a walk on the wild side and ventured into this restaurant. The food was good. The dcor is minimal, casual but yet quite clean. I fell in love with their salad; with peanut dressing it was OUT OF THIS WORLD. A tried the Coconut milk it was quite tasty. The portions were good and the food was presented beautifully on the platter. I highly recommend the Cashew Nuts with chicken or shrimp (thats if you like spicy food). I was really hungry I had both shrimp and chicken add to my Cashew Nut platter. I would strongly recommend that you stop by for some good Thai food. All of the staff was from the hostess to the waiters were really nice

Where's the beef? IN MY SOUP!!

by ShawnEwert

Ok, let me start by saying that I have been driving past this restaurant for YEARS, and have never stopped in. This was definitely a sad oversight on my part. I stopped in today for a bite on ym way home, and was pleasantly surprised. From the outside, you would not think that you could get more than a few people inside, let alone a full kitchen, but when you walk in the restaurant opens into a very spacious and attractive open floorplan. Now, any time I go to a Thai restaurant, I must have an order of corn patties. Being allergic to peanuts, I cannot have the traditional sauce, but I love the corn patties themselves with the sweet chili sauce. I must say that I was a bit disappointed with the corn patties at Bangkok City. The flavor was very nice, but they were a touch harder than expected and had too much breading for my taste. I also ordered the beef and noodle soup. This soup was phenomenal! I have recently started eating beef again after many years as a vegetarian, and am therefore very picky about the beef I eat. This soup had incredibly tender and tasty beef, and the broth was scrumptious. I am normally not a huge fan of cilantro, but found the perfect amount in this soup to set off all of the other ingredients and truly bring them all to life. I think I will make this restaurant a regular stop for the soup alone. I cannot wait to go back to Bangkok City and start working my way through the rest of their wonderful menu. Definitely a restaurant I would recommend to anyone!

Pros: Great soup, very attentive and polite staff

Yummy Thai Food

by mnmcdonough

I ordered from here because it's close to my house and on the way home from work. It's just as good as Royal Thai (don't hold me accountable for the rest of the menu because I really only base this on the only Thai dish that I eat--drunken noodles). Plus, I think it is a little cheaper than Royal Thai. Don't be scared by its outside appearance - I was for a while!

Pros: Yummy Basil noodles (Drunken noodles)

Cons: not sure yet....

New home for me

by David19

I really love this place and i want to come here and be one of their usual customers. The spicy foods on their menu are just to die for if you are one of those people who love to eat spicy food like i do. I enjoyed the spicy papaya salad and the Pad Kee Mow was really good too. I got there pretty early so i got a nice parking spot near the front of the restaurant. Wish i lived near by so i could get it delivered.

Great Night Out

by tontawan

The waiters were friendly and always checked on me when i needed something. I would come back again every week, just for that. The prices for the food wasn't bad either, it beat the other restaurants that i have eaten at and the Manager was excellent at checking if we were doing okay. The Pad Thai was just the way i wanted it, I asked for it not to be a little spicy and they made it the way i wanted it. The Tom Yum soup was also really good, compared to the other Thai restaurants that I've eaten at, It reminded me of the time i was in Thailand, on the beach.

Worst Thai food I've ever had

by maastrichtian

1st of all, I'm Thai. I've eaten at many Thai restaurants in Dallas, and although I do find most of them bland and not authentic (almost any Thai will tell you the same), they're usually ok, and I know people like that kind of food, so I keep my mouth shut. However, after trying out Bangkok City today, I had to register at Citysearch and post my 1st review just to point out that this is the WORST Thai food I've ever had.

FOOD:
Let's start with the Pad Thai, the staple of Thai fare. It was noodles and ketchup. Pad Thai often has ketchup as a COMPONENT of the sauce, but I've never seen anyone try to pass off ketchup as the sole ingredient. If you like this Pad Thai, you also like McDonald's food and shouldn't be allowed to post reviews on the internet.
Pad Siew was stunningly bland. Pork was dry.
Chicken Satay -- HOW do you mess up Chicken Satay? -- was incredibly dry and did not have any curry on it. Maybe at 1 point it was marinated in curry, but it appeared they removed all the curry before cooking.
Imperial rolls (soft rice paper wrapped veggies and shrimp) - horrible. Absolutely no taste, even the shrimp.
The highlight of the meal was the complimentary egg roll, which isn't even Thai.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
Liberal overuse of carrots. The imperial roll was 25% carrot, and the main vegetable in the Pad Siew was carrot -- I've never even seen carrots in Pad Siew, much less as a main ingredient. Carrots are dirt cheap -- that's the only reason I can see for so many. Shame on them.
My take out order, consisting only of the foods I listed, took FORTY MINUTES

SUMMARY:
So my point is, if they screwed up one dish, ok, but they screwed up EVERYTHING, and I only ordered the most common Thai-American foods that they should know how to cook well, consistently. So they must always cook like that. The only good part of the experience was that I got the parking spot right in front of the door. Also they offered me a glass of water while I waited.

Pros: Free air, water

Cons: Food was horrible, very overpriced, very slow

LOVE the noodle dishes!

by REDidentity9

Parking is tight, but the food and service is well worth it. Order the popular Thai noodle dish, Pad Thai (#46) or the Basil Noodles (#47) with a glass of Thai tea, of course. If you're not greeted or served by Joe. Ask for him. Him and his restaurant crew are definitely aimed to please!

Thank you!

This place need a new chef!!

by squashing

Ok ...this place is good BUT! Before I discuss the But I will tell you this place is CLEAN, and GREAT SERVICE. The but is because the food is not only not authentic it's not really that good. We got the coconut soup and that was ok, but the rest of the food was really not good. In the SPICY Thia fried rice they put hug chuncks of green pepper instead of chili pepers. The Basil noodles was just pad thia with a couple pieces of basil. Overall 1 star....not good food. They need a new chef here --everything else was awesome.

Pros: NICE PEOPLE!

Cons: NEEDS A NEW CHEF!

Good for lunch

by dallasdood

My wife and I had lunch here and it was good. I ordered the beef pad thai and my wife ordered a curry dish. We walked away full and happy. The place was sort of empty, but there were a lot of take out orders happening. I thought the dining room was above average, but nothing flashy. The only tricky thing is the parking is a little tight here and limited along Yale. Keep an eye on that.

Best Pad Thai I've Ever Had!

by lindsaylovely

This is literally the best Pad Thai I've ever had. Granted, I've never been to Thailand, nor have I sprawled the U.S. in an attempt to sample every Pad Thai made available to willing consumers, however, I have tried various Thai restaurants in Dallas as well as several other cities. This is hands down the BEST Pad Thai I've ever ingested. The Pad Thai at Bangkok City achieves a great balance between sweet and savory. The other items on their menu are excellent as well, but I am the unofficial Bangkok City Pad Thai proponent.

Pros: Everything!

Cons: Nothing!

Really? 5-Stars?!?

by grinch1155

Alas, my search for good Thai delivery will continue unrewarded. I was so excited to find a 5-star review for a Thai restaurant 2 miles from my house, but I doubt I'll be ordering from Bangkok City again anytime soon.

For $40, my girlfriend and I got the Tom Kha Gai soup, a 5-pc dumpling appetizer, the Pork Pad Kee Mow, and the Gra Pow Duck with sticky rice.

If there's one thing this place DOES do well, it's appetizers. The Tom Kha Gai (coconut soup with chicken and mushroom) and the dumplings were both outstanding. I may stop by and grab a LARGE CONTAINER (apparently, Citysearch has a problem with the word p o t) of that soup to-go the next time I get a craving. But the starters were pretty much where my amazement ended.

The $13 "chef's special" Gra Prow Duck was a real let-down. I normally love duck, but not when it's breaded and fried (which the menu did not say). This is a terrible way to serve a meat with such a great texture and natural flavor. It was accompanied by little more than white onions, which did not save it. Also, they charged me an additional $2 to upgrade to sticky rice, which I didn't take more than two bites of. It was a cold, solid mass in its container by the time it made it to my door.

My girlfriend was equally unimpressed by her pork entree. The pork, which is normally the most tender of the three main meats in Asian food, was dry and chewy. Neither of us finished our meals.

I wanted so badly to like this place. If the total had been maybe $25-30, I may have just thought, 'At least I got what I paid for.' But it wasn't, and I didn't.

Oh well, at least I know where to satisfy my Tom Kha Gai cravings.

A Couple High Points, but Mostly Disappointing

by edeats79

I love Thai food, but this was a disappointment after the glowing reviews that I read here. The bookends of our meals, the Chicken Satay and the Sticky Rice and Mangos were delicious and memorable, but pretty much everything in between was ordinary at best. The Pad Thai was dry, tough and tasteless - maybe the worst I've ever had. The Green Papaya Salad was chewy and one-dimensional...OK, but nothing more. Volcano Chicken may be unique to Bangkok City - and again it was OK - but visually it was unappealing and not particularly memorable. Wide Noodles with Basil (and chicken) was kind of bland and lacked basil. Thai Fried Rice (pork) was pretty good, but again it tended to be bland. When I've had Thai food at other restaurants, the flavors have rung clear and true. Here the flavors seemed heavy and lifeless. There are better Thai restaurants.

Pros: Great Satay and Dessert

Cons: Salad and Entrees were average at best

Authentic Thai at it's best

by raeli1975

Joe told me years ago that the Thai food I had eaten in local restaurants had a lot to be desired as it was "Americanized." He was so right! Bankok City Thai a wonderful restaurant with lovely ambiance and food that invokes passion. All of the herbs used are fresh and homegrown. His menu is diverse and offers a lot of "favorites" and new tastes. The panang and curries are all wonderful, rich, and aromatic. Unlike many Thai restaurants around the Metroplex, if you order beef, you get wonderful, tender morsels of lean beef - not the chewy stuff that tastes more like jerky. My favorite is the volcano chicken - spicy with lots of fresh herbs and moist chicken. It makes my mouth water. The best part is, everything on the menu is very affordable and the portions are big enough to share. Be sure to save room for desert! The fried bananas are incredible!

I met Joe (Owner/Manager of Bangkok City @ Greenville) in 2005 when he was working as a food server for antoher great Thai restaurant in Dallas. Joe's services were excellent, and now we are good friends. Joe's customer freindliness extends beyond great dinning experiances we receive from him. He invited me to visit Thailand. I had a great time in Thailand thanks to his family who made all travel arrangements for me.
Prior to opening this Bangkok City @ Greenville, Joe visited finest Asian restaurants in western part of the country to pick good ideas for his new venture. He regularly seek advice from customers like me on new ideas to improve services and food items. Joe's parents ran a fine restaurant in suburb of Bangkok, and Joe helped his parents in restaurant business from younger age. After completing his undergraduate studies, Joe worked as sales executive for one of the largest firms in Thailand. Recently, Joe receive a Masters degree in Management from Teas A&M University.

So with Joe's great personality and management experiances in sales and retaurants, I would not be suprise oweners of Bangkok City has established excellent relationships with more than 21 loyal customers like me who are willing to write a review for Bangkok City @ Greenville Avenue in a heart beat.

TWICE A WEEK LUNCH STOP

by 3113113

Bangkok City is my favorite restraint on Greenville Ave. We go there at least once a week for lunch. Joe is a great host and makes everyone feel special. Our entire work group agrees that Bangkok City has the best Thai food in Dallas. The regular menu items are wonderful but the recently added daily specials are great. Monday I had one of the best fish meals ever; a red snapper fillet covered in vegetables and a basil sauce with crispy basil leaves on top.
Everyone near Greenville Ave. should put this in their restraint rotation.

Been to this restaurant several times with friends -- always a good experience. Food reminds me of trips to Bangkok and northern Thailand. Try the papaya salad -- tender, juicy and a little spicy. Get there early - parking can be a challenge. Staff is very friendly - don't be hesitant to make special requests or to talk to the owner.

Pros: Good atmosphere and authentic cuisine

Cons: limited parking

Best Thai cusine ever!!!!!!

by phenol

My friend recommended me for the restaurant when I came in town. I really love it. The best was fish. I don't really think that I like fish until I tried it here. Crispy and a little sweet sour and spicy, Pla rad prik, was the best. The desert was great. Love their sweet rice. I love the atmosphere as well. Before I left town, I came back again and this time I just had a quick lunch, Pad Thai. I loved the service and food. Very fast and nice service. I wish I can go there very often.

Pros: Great food, test yummy

Cons: a little crownded on weekend

Welcome Atmosphere with the Best Traditional Taste

by ittilee

You will find the best Thai cuisine at Bangkok City! I tried a little bit of everything with the Combination Platter. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, the Bangkok City Shrimp is highly recommended. Tom Yum soup was pleasingly spiced and mouth-watering. The Curry Duck with authentic, savory flavor has pineapple and tomato, just the way they make it in Thailand. Give this fine restaurant a try...the first bite will get you hooked!! Thanks for reading.

This restaurant has two concept, the first one is the lunch concept. I reccomended food will be lunch special with the cheap price, but the food quality is wonderful. And, the second one is comfortable dinner, you can start with the tasty appetizers, follow by many choices of main dish, and finish with the cold or warm Thai dessert. I believe that you will like this place.

Pros: Tasty food and good atmosphere
