I have been dancing at Arthur Murray Plano for over 1.5 years and I absolutely love it. It has been one of the best decisions of my life because I have become a happier, more confident person. I have had private lessons with almost all of the teachers at the Plano studio. They are all caring and love to teach. They create a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. I feel like it is my second home. They welcome kids of all ages. My son loves coming with me.

I love the private lessons because my teachers are able to create a lesson around what I want to learn and what my goals are. I also love the group classes because I get to dance with other students and practice my school figures. There is also weekly practice parties and events through out the year, from a evening of dinner and dancing with live music to a weekend of dance competition with a professional show. Their goal is to have fun and to learn to dance. This studio excels at both.

Arthur Murray studios are franchised and international, so even if you travel, you can visit an Arthur Murray studio for a group class and know they will be teaching the same dance figures. The dance figures are kept up to date so you know you are not learning outdated dance steps. Every teacher well trained and continuously receive new training, even the more experienced teachers. The Plano studio, along with the Dallas and Fort Worth studios, bring in traveling coaches for both their teachers and students.

I will continue to take lessons with no plan on stopping or slowing down. I'm a ballroom dancer for life.

The Arthur Murray Dance studio is first and foremost a positive learning environment. Many people have an issue with the price. Well I can say your not paying for the name like buying a pair of Nike shoes. Other studios will have a lower price but every other group class is an extra charge so if you want any practice the cost starts adding up. Here all the extra group classes are included.
But the first time I walked in I was greeted with a smile and ever since then all my teachers have been positive, supportive, adaptive and very competent. It is also a very social environment. I've made friends that go beyond dancing there. Dancing in general improves ones life, mentally, physically, emotionally. And what I've gotten from the studio here goes beyond just learning a few steps and that's what Arthur Murray is great at.

Arthur Murray Plano and Dallas are not places you go just to learn how to dance. They are safe havens to meet new people, share experiences, and most of all, add new members to your family. I had never danced a single day before walking through their doors a year ago, and with their guidance I now can enjoy every second of time I find myself on the floor. The team at Arthur Murray is very supportive and is willing to work with you when you need it, which has been a blessing for me as a college student. I could not be more happy with the overall service and experience they have provided.

I have been a student since January 2011. No single dance studio is a perfect match for everybody, but the Arthur Murray Dance Studios I have knowledge of (Plano, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Little Rock) understand that people have many different learning styles, and they craft a personalized training program. There is no separate charge for group classes and studio social parties, so attend as many as possible at both the Plano and Dallas studios to maximize your value. But what about the benefits I mentioned? Dancing improves your balance, health, outlook, social life and more. The Plano studio has become a second home to me. The students are like family. Dancing is outrageous fun and a mental and physical challenge. One last thing: those of us who have been there for years love to dance with the newcomers. Know that you are very, very welcome to join us. Hope to see you there.

Six months ago, I started out dancing with Arthur Murray in Plano from absolute ground zero. I started out with very little dancing experience at all. All of the professional instructors are great to work with. Besides my private lessons, I go to every group class and practice party that I can make it to, work sometimes interferes. You really get back what you put into it. I've found that the more I dance the more confident I am but my instructors are always there to help if I get stuck. When I don't understand something they break it down so that I get it. I feel that all the instructors do what they do because they love it and that makes all the difference in the world to me as a student.

I would never take lessons from this school, cause they do not hire all professional instructors. They post adds on craigslist for instructors saying no experience necessary. I replied having never danced ballroom in my life. I took some ballet and tap as a kid (don't really remember any of it), but that's my whole dance back ground! Well they offered me a job. I had to turn it down cause I also got hired for a better job. Anyway, many of the instructors are just trained briefly after their hired, and then they train you. Knowing that after I take some lessons, I could pretty much do their job doesn't make me want to take lessons there... :

Business Response:

First of all, we would like to clarify that we have never had anyone turn down a job with us. We have multiple avenues for advertising for our instructor positions, and Craigslist is just one of them. We sometimes have instructors come to us fully trained, and other times we do the training ourselves. All of our instructors must complete our rigorous training program and our certification testing before we would ever allow them to teach students.
.

The best way to get the value from these lessons is to go to as many group classes as you can and attend the parties on Fridays. $137 is not a great deal if you only go to one 45 minute lesson every week, but it is good if you participate in everything. One of the reviews mentioned that the group classes taught her things steps she already knew, but sometimes they are good to go to because of that reason - repetition will help students stop thinking about what they're doing and just do it. The instructors are very well trained for the most part. They have access to training by world champion dancers, and the students do as well. I don't know if you'll find that at other studios, because I haven't been to any others.

There was another review that mentioned what the instructors get paid. The reviewer said $10-$20 per lesson, and the company said that wasn't accurate. I agree that it's not accurate. About $7 is accurate. You get minimum wage for the hours you are there that you don't have a lesson. If you have a lesson that hour, you get $1 extra. Students are paying $137 dollars per private lesson, but that money is not going to the teachers. Yes, the teachers care a lot about what they are doing and are very passionate about helping people learn to dance, but shouldn't they be paid more, especially looking at what the students are paying for their expert teachers?? Also, they don't provide benefits. They say they do, but only if you teach 40 lessons a week, which only a couple of people who at the studio are able to do (because they've built up clients for many many years). All the instructors are struggling financially and many of them live together to make ends meet. I'm sure the company will write to say that this isn't true, but it is. Most of the instructors are happy doing what they're doing, but none of them are paid well. Also, they are expected to be there pretty much every day of the week. They have set paid hours, and then they are expected to be there on the weekends for unpaid training.

The instructors are also pressured to up-sell up-sell up-sell. Find any way you can to convince the students that they can go to the mega competitions. These can be great experiences for the students, it's true. But a big part of getting them to try to afford the competitions is so then you can convince them to come in for more private lessons to prepare. I hated trying to get the students to come to more and more lessons that I knew they couldn't afford. If you couldn't get them to sign up for more lessons, you'd get talked to by the managers. Then other instructors would try to get them to sign up. Money money money.

However, I have seen and heard amazing stories of people transforming their lives and building their confidence by dancing at Arthur Murray. Instructors are really trained in how to make people feel good, and that part of the job is really fun. It's great to encourage people and see them feeling better about themselves. Dancing is very therapeutic, and I think it's something everyone should do.

In summary, take lessons here but know that you will continually be pressured to spend more than you're comfortable with and be strong enough to say no when you need to. Also, as much as you can participate in....do! Go to all the events and competitions you can, because you can see a lot and have great fun.

If you're looking for a job, this can be a fun job (and I'm glad I did it), but don't expect to be able to make a lot of money or support a family doing this. You won't until you've been doing it for many many years. It's good for a young person still living with parents or a roommate who only needs about $800 a month though and who wants to spend every day at the studio. It's a great opportunity to learn to ballroom dance, get great training, learn to teach, and learn selling techniques that focus on how the product benefits the client. You will meet fun people and get to dress up :)

My wife and I have been students at Arthur Murray Plano for a little over 18 months, and have found it to be a wonderful addition to our lives. I had no real dance experience before coming to Arthur Murray and was a bit intimidated by the prospect of taking dance instruction - really started out thinking that I'd do it mainly because my wife was interested in adding a bit of dancing to our life. From the moment we stepped into the studio, though, we were made to feel welcome and very much at ease. The quality of the instruction has been superb - the instructors are friendly, caring professionals who have encouraged us along every step of our new adventure. I've made the transition from a person who started dancing mainly to keep his wife happy to someone who truly enjoys dancing - something I never expected to happen! I always leave the studio feeling upbeat and energized. We've met a lot of great folks among the students, and look forward to many more years with the studio!

The dance anthropologist Joann Kealiinohomoku, having noted the marked differences in dictionary definitions of dance during the twentieth century, offered the following definition: Dance is a transient mode of expression, performed in a given form and style by the human body moving in space. Dance occurs through purposefully selected and controlled rhythmic movements; both the performer and the observing members of a given group recognize the resulting phenomenon as dance.
To me dancing with Arthur Murray (AM) in Plano has become a centerpiece to balance in life. This feeling I deeply share with my lovely wife. We visited AM years ago seeking a change in our life style. We were pursuing a significant emotional event that would transform our outlook in the mundane, stressful and difficulties life we are living. You can certainly attend many studios; we did. The question I was seeking to answer was; what value added can we gain from the investment in this studio that cannot be obtained from other studios. In this case, I can easily use two words commitment and quality. The commitment from the studio (Management and Staff) from the beginning that I was to engage in a journey customized to fulfill some internal disquietude about dancing was amazing. To my surprise, it was not limited to dance but also to better me as a person in the form of etiquette and manners. To that extend it has been fulfilled. The other word I care about is quality not quantity. I have learned that in many instances the perception of a better investment is directly associated to cost. There are millions of opinions about that. I will not try to steer any one from the way they judge things. It is your knowledge of the subject what determines your ability to judge quality. When it comes to quality, I have traveled around the world and have had the opportunity to use some of the education I have received from the Studio. To my surprise not only the techniques checkout right but in some instances I got the privileged of been requested to provide feedback on some movements in the dance floor because my execution of a dance has risen to a level where it is noted that some serious training have been completed. To that, I am proud of my accomplishments. I am also very appreciative to my Instructors/ Couches and Mentors at the studio. Go Plano Bam Bam

BLEH!!
I shopped around and found that NO ONE has a price of lessons above the $95 price range.

Investing on these 2 words --"Arthur Murray"---soley is not enough to convince me to spend an extra $40 - $50 over other recognizable studios in the area.

Not doing it! NO WAY!

Unlike most studio websites, they fail to list the teachers your working with so there is no qualifying your reason to spend MORE MONEY.

Thanks but NO THANKS!

Lessons are sold in packages by level of experience. We had little dance experience and so had an option of taking either a 4 or 8 series private-lesson beginners' package. The package covers four different dances. Lessons are a little over $100 a lesson per couple. We purchased 8 lessons two months ago and will finish the series next week. Usually there are three or four private lessons going on at one time which share one room as well as one music system in the studio. Because of this, the music does not usually match the dance you are learning. I think it would reinforce learning how to match a music type to a particular dance if students listened to fox trot while learning fox trot, for example. Usually 3 dances are covered in a private lesson for about 15 minutes each. We feel that we are learning too many dances at one time as we have difficulty remembering which steps go with which dance. A class format teaching no more than one or two types of dance for a period of weeks until the students have a firm base would be less confusing and build confidence quicker. Arthur Murray does not alter their programs to accommodate this. You can choose which four dances you would like to learn, but they recommended fox trot, waltz, swing, and Rumba. We have found instructors professional, pleasant, and well trained.

The private lesson packages include unlimited drop-in group lessons during the time you are taking privates. The groups are taught by a different teacher each time. We like this because it allows exposure to different teaching styles and makes the lessons a little more interesting. A good thing about the groups is that they provide lots of exposure to dance if you are able to take advantage of the time slots offered. There is one group lesson offered each evening 5 days a week as well as 2 afternoon slots offered at the studio we use. So you can see that to maximize your investment, you will really want to dedicate yourself to spending at least a few visits a week at the studio. Groups and privates last about 45 minutes so it is not a huge time investment if you have a short drive to the studio. And 45 minutes goes quickly, so it's not a daunting task, even if you don't really feel like going on a particular night. We found about 1/3 of the group lessons were worth the time invested. Most times, we already new the few basic steps they covered and would have preferred to learn more advanced material in one of our dances, instead. Partners always rotate during the groups, which is awkward. A little rotating is probably good so as to learn to dance with different partners. The good and bad thing about group lessons is that a lot of different dances are introduced. This is good in theory so as to allow the opportunity to try a selection and see what you like. But in practicality, we've been exposed to 8 different dance styles since March and it is confusing - we can't keep the names and steps straight. This is not good for confidence. We have shied away from attending group lessons after participating in a disconcerting, ill-chosen group lesson last week. We rotated partners through each one of a huge group of over 40 students multiple times (at least 60 partner changes in 30 minutes) which left us feeling manhandled. The format had the men and women reverse rolls so it was confusing and reinforced the exact opposite of what we had spent the prior 6 weeks learning. What's worse, inexperienced lead partners were expected to guide their partner around a very crowded, small dance floor with over 40 equally-inexperienced dancers - it was extremely unpleasant, frustrating, harrowing, and lucky that dancers did not wind up in a heap on the floor. This is not the usual group format, which is small groups of 3 - 5 couples and is much more structured.

Each Friday there is a two-hour group dance party at our studio for all students. Partners rotate and different dances are done. It is good experience for future public dancing pursuits. Two hours seems like a long time, though.

What we have decided to do after completing the last lesson in our package is pursue private lessons in the format we desire - one or two dances at a time until we reach proficiency - at another studio, as Arthur Murray cannot accommodate this. Once we learn which steps go with which dance and feel confident and familiar with these basic dances, perhaps we will try Arthur Murray, again. If you want a lot of exposure and practice, the Arthur Murray program is a good way to go. Probably eventually all of the dances would sink in if you keep at it. It just seems to us that there might be an easier, quicker, and less expensive method - we'll see.

As the previous reviewers have stated "you get what you pay for." My wife and I started a AM a few years ago. During times, we would be in the studio five days a week and when life got too busy, we would take a few months off. After taking a break, the teachers were great at refreshing us and then helping us move forward.

There are free group classes every night. The instructors rotate in the group classes, which allows the students to see different styles of teaching. The private lessons do seem expensive, until you add in the group classes. When you calculate the value, AM is worth the money.

Did I say the teachers are great. Management has done a wonderful job at providing training for their teachers. They are very professional and are always willing to answer questions or provide assistance when you are struggling with a particular dance. Even if you are taking a lesson from one teacher, don't be surprised if one of the other teachers helps out during your lesson.

Hope to see you on the dance floor at AM.

Overall, AM is a very nice studio. Professional staff, good facilities. My only complaint is their lack of more al la cart pricing. Everything is in packages and the packages don't always cater to a couple just wanting a few lessions. The price is a little high, but you get what you pay for. Overall, I definatly recommend this place to anyone looking for that extra spring in your step next time you are out on the dance floor.

Some people have a great time here, but you have to be willing to spend around $100 for a lesson that lasts less than an hour. Guess how much the teachers make? $10-20 per lesson and they have to be there even if they are not teaching for the day. Don't even bother asking about the extras that can add up quick. As for teenagers who can't afford lessons, if dancing is your passion you could become a teacher. They will teach you to dance for free if you sign a contract after the second day stating that you will work for them for one whole year and if you leave before then you are required to pay a very large sum of money, and trust me they will hunt you down to pay it. There is also no workers comp, medical, dental, or anything like that.

Mostly I just don't see the point of learning something that you really can't use anywhere else. Sure you could take the latin style to the club, but nobody is going to be able to dance with you other than someone else who knows the steps. If you call the studio and ask them where to go dancing, they will only say at the studio.

Business Response:

A lot of mis-information I am not sure who Alicia J. is, as I can't recall any former students by that name. I am not sure where she is getting her information, because it is very inaccurate. Our instructors are dedicated, career minded professionals who are eager to share the joy and benefits of learning to dance with anyone who is interested. Arthur Murray has been in business for almost 100 years. If you are interested in learning, give us a call! I guarantee you will have a great time!

I have been with the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Plano for 4 years now. The staff at the studio are very caring, they have truly become my dance family. I tried several independent studios before going to Arthur Murray, there is no comparison. You get what you pay for. There is a reason that Arthur Murray has been around almost 100 years. That says it all. If you want a life changing experience then give it a try. I did, and I could never thank the staff enough for giving me the tools to become the best dancer I could possibly be. I have been to several World Wide Competitions and the Plano, Dallas and Ft. Worth studios shine!!!
I would highly recommend the Plano studio. Do something great for yourself for the New Year. Try a dance lesson and see what you think. During my dance journey I was successful in losing 65 lbs., and I feel like a million dollars. The dancing definitely helped shave off inches and pounds.
I just want to give my utmost heart felt thanks to the Plano Studio for givng me this life changing experience.

I am the manager at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Plano, and I have been with the company for 10 years. I was deeply saddened by the experience accounted by "Sarah D" and would like to clarify a few things for anyone who is considering taking lessons at our studio. First of all, I have checked our records thoroughly, and have not found, nor can I recall, any students by the name Sarah D. who have taken lessons at our studio. If, in fact, this person was a former student and has chosen to use an alias, I would encourage them to PLEASE call me so that myself as well as the teachers have the opportunity to rectify the situation and try to understand why they felt that way. However, if the bad review is bogus, made up, or possibly the work of a former disgruntled employee, please let me tell you about Arthur Murray! Our studio lives and breathes by our mission statement, which is "to change people's lives through dancing." In the years that I have been with Arthur Murray, starting as a teacher, and now as Manager; I have personally witnessed hundreds of lives that were dramatically changed (healed marriages, weight loss, new self image, increased confidence and social skills, etc.) by learning to dance and being a part of our studio and the Arthur Murray Organization at large. We strive to always do whatever is best for our students to help them reach their goals, and to make sure that their experience with us is a safe, healthy, and happy one. So, please, if you are considering taking lessons, come on in and see what we are all about for yourself! I think it would be a shame for anyone to miss out on all that we have to offer because of something they read on the internet that simply isn't true. See you on the dance floor!

This dance studio is a small dance studio located next door to my neighborhood. Their customers seem to be mostly adults because their prices are a bit expensive and not affordable for teenagers. I entered the studio to inqure about their rates for learning how to salsa. I was shocked at their rates and realized that I could receive salsa lessons for far cheaper at the recreational center just down the street.

All of my instructors have given me the greatest tools to become the best dancer I can possibly be. It is through their love, care, belief, and high expectations that I have been able to achieve things in my dancing that I never dreamed would be possible.

When I walk in the doors each day, you can feel the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm of everyone that is there. Once you walk through those doors, you do not want to leave.

Within a week of coming to the studio, I remember coming up to the manager to tell her, "The staff and everyone here is my family. Thank you to you and your staff for letting me be a part of this fabulous family."

I began my incredible journey with Arthur Murray in October, 2006. I will never forget walking in for my first lesson. It was a day of excitement. I came in that day thinking that I would take a few lessons and never dreaming that it would change my life forever.

Of course, the dancing instructors and staff at Arthur Murray are first rate; they display an uncommon blend of knowledge, enthusiasm, and patience that make the overall experience a true pleasure. They're great to work with, consistently pleasant, and very supportive. They are all expectional instructors.

I first purchased a group of five Arthur Murray lessons for my wife and me in December of 2005 as an "out of the box" Christmas gift. Little did I know at the time that we'd still be enjoying the experience and learning a lot four years later.

Some of the instructors are great, fun, and frindly, when you first join. But, I feel they price themselves out of thier own market. They are just way too expensive. Why pay over $100.00 for a 45 min prvt lesson, when the competition is clearly 1/4 that price and you get a full hour. And thier Client/Teacher communication leaves something to be disired, it is acutally non-existant after a while, unless of course you have deep deep pockets. That seems to be the only people they talk to, or cater to. I have not received a phone call from this studio in 8 months.

Pros: Plenty of Parking. Friday Party's are a blast! other students, very friendly.

Cons: Price, Communication, Music sharing during private lessons, and group lessons. All Around Service
