I walk past this place with the dogs every morning, when we're late enough it's open and we can go in and indulge. Everything is great (but the chocolate flan cake is my go to), the ice cream is fantastic, wonderful spot. I'm on a budget, but the prices aren't that high and it's a wonderful indulgence both monetarily- and calorie-wise.

Having worked in a bakery before, I can guess as to how long their items are allowed to sit in the display case.

The Chocolate Bar is a very large sweet shop, and its size and location mean it can safely charge higher prices. However, where its size should mean faster turnover and more freshness, the quality of their deserts is just not that good, ex. dry cake, chocolate-dipped items that remain on shelf too long - stale/dry inside, cookies with few mix-ins that are $2.25 a piece. Deserts are big but not good.

Save your money and your calories.

When I first walked into the chocolate bar, I was amazed at their selection. I've bought nice fancy gifts for my boss there, along with funny completely chocolate PMS pills for my friends. The food is awesome, the price is okay, and even if you don't want chocolate, it's worth just looking around.

I went to this store for the first time not too long ago. I was a little skeptical at first because I was sure that no chocolate could be better than godiva chocolate. I bought a chocolate covered strawberry and raspberry. As soon as the strawberry hit my mouth I was in heaven!! As soon as I got home I told my mom " I've found a chocolate better than Godiva!! " I told her and my father about the chocolate bar and both of them are planning to visit soon. I live an hour and a half away from the chocolate bar but that's not going to stop me!! I loved looking at the variety of items they had "chocolateized" and I know where I will go for gifts now also!!

PROS: variety, taste, customer service
CONS: none

I dont get why people recommend The chocolate bar. I have found they are overpriced, understaffed and the offerings are minimal. The parking downtown is a pain. Your already frustrated before making it into the store only to be ignored by a sales girl on the phone with customers in the shop. I would rather visit my favorite chocolate store in the mall and be in and out in minutes. And experience pleasurable customer service. This place is lacking!

The Chocolate Bar has the best chocolate bars that I've ever tasted....my kids love it. Their prices are very reasonable. As soon as you walk in the place you could smell the sweetness of chocolate. They always have free samples of different chocolates every day. If you sign up for their mailing address, they will send you coupons every month.

I am like totally addicted to this place. Yes it is a bit pricy, but it is the best chocolate. I love finding some cute quirky something chocolate to give to someone just because and the chocolate being so incredible.
The funky unique ideas for my friends make going in there an adventure. I look around and get a little something for them and a little something for me; it is a win, win situation for everyone. After all it is Chocolate that makes the world go round!

It's funny to see adults go in here and go gaga...like they do at a bar. "Why didn't they have places like this when we were growing up?" they ask each other.

They have perfect office gifts, although I think the moulded chocolate looks too waxy and manufactured. Nobody wants a Hershey's Bar. Well, I say that, and Hershey's is probably still the #1 candy.

It's $12 for a slice of sugared cocoa cake from heaven. The problem is there are 10 cakes to choose from...and you know they don't give samples of the cake.

They do, however, give samples of their fresh ice cream. After three samples, you might talk yourself out of getting anything, because your sugar tooth will be satiated. Go for the Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint...it has "thin" in the title.

They have dog treats here that look good enough for human consumption. Dogs can't eat chocolate btw.

My favorite location is the University Blvd. location because it looks a little bigger than the West Alabama location. Both locations have horrible parking.

The Chocolate Bar sends plenty of messages to tempt its Facebook fans. They sometimes have musicians play at their University location too.

This place is amazing. There is anything you could ever want in chocolate here. Ice cream, cakes, truffles, gifts, even chocolate covered cereal - like chocolate covered Lucky Charms cereal - who would have thought?

We always go for ice cream and often come home with other candy.

Great selection!

Everyone at the Chocolate Bar is Passionate about their Chocolate Creations and Masterpieces. I can attest that they use nothing but fresh berries daily. My family owns the first commerical berry farm in Texas and I can assure you after many deliveries that I have never seen a stale fruit on their shelf. The owners are perfectionists and they have grown to two locations in the last decade. They offer nothing but the best chocolate you will ever eat in your life. Their cakes, my favorite is Aunt Ettas, is moist and creamy. If you ever have an issue or a question ask to speak to one of the owners and they will be happy to answer any question you may have. They offer anything you could want and if its not on the shelf, you can special order it and they will be happy to do so. They create holiday wreaths for the holidays and you will find unique gifts there for your friends. They have been around for nine years and are well known in Houston and will be around for many more years.

Let me state up front that I am one onf the owners of The Chocolate Bar and I understand that my opinion may be perceived as somewhat biased. I believe there were 2 errors made during this person's visit. The first is that he/she was misinformed by one of our staff members; for which I take full responsibility. The second is that there is considerable misinterpretation by the reviewer. Here are the FACTS: Our chocolate covered strawberries are made fresh several times each day. Every morning, the opening Chocolatier pulls ALL of the strawberries from the previous day. There is almost no way there can be any mold on a strawberry that has been in our store for less than 24 hours. Once the strawberries from the previous day have been pulled, they are brought into the kitchen, chopped and immediately frozen for use in Snowberry ice cream; which is one of our largest selling ice creams. In 9 years of business, no one to our knowledge has ever become ill. Again, the strawberries are not stale! I am very sorry that this reviewer had a negative experience. I hope that he/she will return to THe Chocolate Bar. Fortunately, the majority of our reviews from EVERYWHERE are glowing. We work very hard to achieve a positive experience for everyone.

I have visited the Chocolate Bar in Rice village twice with my family and once more by myself, when my work took me near the rice village. My favorite used to be Snowberry ice-cream. I ordered it as usual and was admiring the other creations when one of the employees came up to me and asked me if I needed anything else. Out of curiosity I asked him what they do with the chocolate covered strawberries when they start turning bad (I could already see mold on 2 of them) He commented that the owners of the Chocolate Bar were very smart. Every other night, they have us check the Chocolate covered fruits and take out the ones that have turned bad or are turning bad. I liked that. What shocked me was his comment after that. He said that the owners have the stale fruit cut into pieces and use them in their ice-cream as filling. Imagine that. I was eating Snowberry ice-cream with Strawberries that had been pulled off the shelves because they were not worth consuming. I was disgusted and have wowed never to go to either of their locations again and have passed on the word to all my colleagues at Baylor. I wonder why the Health Department hasn't shut them down. I am definitely informing them. BUYER BEWARE! Now that I think about it, even their cakes are dry, as if they have been on the shelves really long.

THE CHOCOLATE BAR IS AMAZING!!!!!! I'm not origionally from Houston. I'm in Houston for an internship and came across The Chocolate Bar in a google search. The title gave it away for me. I was sold. I am a huge chocolate lover and love this place. They have candies cakes and ice cream. What more could you want?

The only complaint I had while I was there was the service. Both times I have gone there have been quite a few workers but they weren't very attentive. They were more concerned with chatting with each other than helping me. They weren't terrible but they could have been better. It was not even close to being bad enough that I wouldn't go again.

If I could I would eat at The Chocolate Bar everyday. The food is wonderful. Warning: don't go on a full stomach and make sure you are ready to enjoy all the wonderful things it has to offer!

I used to work in a bakery, and I can guess as to how long their items are allowed to sit in the display case.

The Chocolate Bar is a very large bakery, and its size and location mean it can safely charge higher prices.

I have been a customer of The Chocolate Bar almost from the beginning. I have been visiting the Alabama location regularly, and I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of the 2nd location in Rice Village. All I can say is Wow!!! The place is out of this world. The service was great, everyone was friendly and helpful. They have a huge window where you can watch the chocolate makers in action. It was not as crowded as the original store but I suspect that won't last for long.

I don't know about this Alabama location, but when went to this new place located at Rice village, I wasn't very happy with the service I got. The price tag for the cherries I was planning to buy was 2.95$, but the cashier tried to charge me 9.95$. Of course I complained about it and after a prief discussion with the manager the cashier told me that there was a wrong prize in the tag and the right price is 9.95$. In the name of the good customer service, I would have expected them to let me buy the cherries with the price marked on the price tag, but that never happened. So I just simply desided not to go back there ever again.

We really enjoy the ice cream every time we visit. The smaller size cups are usually just the right size. I recommend the German Chocolate. Yum! The staff is friendly but parking is tough. We haven't done any shopping on the other side of the store but it all looks very good.

The chocolate ice cream was to die for but the attitude of the staff is not worth it. You have to ask to be waited on. If I were the owner or manager, I would definately enroll my staff in customer service classes or spend the time to train them myself. Part of enjoying your treat is enjoying the entire experience which includes service!! It doesn't matter how good the product if service is not good...most folks won't return. I won't.

First glance I pull off a small hair on top of my cake. Then first bite and I pull a hair out and think Ok, maybe (hopefully) it's my hair. Then my husband found a hair, and I've found two more - all in one piece of cake! Guess it didn't stop us from eating it (delicious) but come on folks!

Stopped in during a girls night out. We were doing a progressive meal and completely were satisfied with the dessert here. Part of the shop is a little store and the other side is a little cafe type section. It was a bit crowded but it was also Saturday. The girls and I all shared and after trying the rocky road, mint, smore, and oreo cake, I was happily satisfied. Every single cake we tried was excellent. We also all left with a bag in hand and goodies inside. Kids will love it, it can be a date spot or a spot to drop by and pick up a dessert before going home. Do yourself a favor and try this place. You will not be disappointed.

My girlfriend and I found this little spot in the Houston Press and made our way to it as soon as possible. The staff was patient and attentive as we took our time trying to see what to get. So many choices! I've been to speciality chocolate stores all over the country, but this place was the best! The Chocolatte drink was to die for! I'm thinkin about going back this afternoon! Everything in the store was well worth the price and I was even able to buy some treats for my dog..which he loved! Bring a date, bring the kids...whatever you do...you must go to this place!

For those that think it's overpriced maybe they should remember the place is called chocolate bar so that must mean they specialize in chocolate!! Who has even been to a specialty store that wasn't a little pricey. Really?!?!?
As for the person who said the cake pieces are small they must of not got the chocolate cakes. The pieces are huge and can be shared by at least two people. Granted they do cost $10 and up but split it between 2 or 3 people and it's really not that much.
The one thing I really love about this place is that you can get chocolate custom made. Comes in handy for special events.
If you are cheap don't go here. If you love chocolate then make the trip!!
Parking can be a big problem since the parking lot is very small.

Here you will pay top dollar for dessert that no human should eat. Only in Houston would you find a place that overcharges because people seem to think that the ultimate in dessert means enough calories for an entire day packed into one slice of cake, cup of hot chocolate, OR cone of ice cream. I love dessert, and I love decadent, chocolatey cakes, and all that, but the desserts here actually make me feel sick if I finish one. It's good at the first bite, but if you can't eat one without feeling sick, they're doing something wrong! It's an abomination to have a shop full of desserts, each one so cloyingly sweet, and not have a single item that's appealing because it's made well WITHOUT going overboard! Parking is a nightmare, and they never seem to bother telling you where the line starts.

Here you will pay top dollar for dessert that no human should eat. Pros: Selection is diverse, you might enjoy up to three bites

Cons: Food makes me sick, way overpriced, at that price point no good selections available

I have bought Valentine's, Christmas and birthday gifts in the chocolate shop for years, and was excited when they expanded to include a cute sit-down area for eating cake and ice cream. The ice cream is what draws me and my friends, and while I'm sure the cake is good, I've never had it and don't take out-of-towners there for that. Make sure you take advantage of the fact that you can try as many different flavors as you want before you buy. My favorite is the orange chocolate ice cream, but some of my friends don't like it. I'm huge on chocolate (regular, dark, not white as much), but when someone had me try their lemon white chocolate, I was surprised by how it was different from what I expected and how much I enjoyed it. Their truffle ice cream has real huge truffles in it--it's tough to finish! As you can imagine, if you like chocolate, you'll probably like most of their ice cream flavors. It may have a slightly different vibe from places like Jaques Torres (Brooklyn, New York) and exquisite chocolatiers I've visited in Paris, but I think the chocolate here is pretty good in comparison, and I'm proud to have such a great shop so close to home.

Pros: One of the best ice cream shops around, excellent gift choices available

Cons: Parking available mostly on side streets when busy, expensive if you're not used to paying more than Blue Bell

.

I have no idea how a chocolate shop could be any better. The staff is kind and attractive. The food is amazing. The mint ice creams are especially good. I understand why one might be concerned with the prices; but I saw that Blue Bell was on sale at Walgreen's-- 2 for $7. If you want to eat ice cream at home or in the Walgreen's parking lot, out of a tub & in bulk, take advantage of the savings. The Chocolate Bar is a Houston hotspot. Anyone who thinks it is a candy store is really missing the point. I have been probably 50 times & have never been let down. Park on a side street so you don't have to worry about backing out on West Alabama.

My husband and I went to the Chocolate Bar for the first time last weekend on a Friday Night, only to find out that it is not at all like I had heard it was! The cakes are totally over priced!, ($6.95 per slice) and over rated!, and they are not even big slices! I am a desert and chocolate freak and I have eaten desert just about all over Houston, if I ever got a slice of cake for $6.95 for sure it was a pretty big piece!, but not at this place!!! They do not offer good coffee either, only regular or decaf brewed coffee, no expresso machine! The service also was not that good either, you can not get even a glass of water! They have a water fountain by the restrooms where you can get some water or else buy some!, and not to mentioned parking!, it is terrible specially on a weekend night!!! After spending $20.00 for 2 slices of cake (that was not bad but not great either) and 2 cups of brewed coffee, I will never go back again! I definitely do not recommend this place at all!

quaint and cute, it is a gem snuggled off of shepherd and alabama ... a real find that is definitely a pleasant sweet tooth experience. there are every imaginable assortment of sweets that they offer, you wouldn't know where to begin! love the fun-loving ambience ... like having a flashback to your childhood. a great idea: fun after dinner date place to go.*

The chocolate is GREAT for gifts, but treat yourself with the homemade ice cream. The cakes are huge, but expensive and are outsourced from the Dessert Gallery, so go there for a cake fix. Besides, everyone gets the ice cream anyway. Open late, and always busy from 8pm to close. Not a whole lot of parking out front, try the side streets (easier to get out of). Smell selection of sugar free chocolate, but only bonbons. They have coffee and milk to go along with their cookies, too. As for the negative review below about offending their children's delicate sensibilities, forget it. No one likes bratty kids, but they can do get togethers/semi parties for people of all ages. This is not Willy Wonka you're talking to. Very friendly place, because who hates chocolate?

I left Houston a few years ago after grad school and am back in California, but every now and then I get a wistful feeling for the Chocolate Bar...I loved the ice cream the most.

Note to the owners if you ever read this (and you used to be pretty nice): Please put up a website and let people order from it!!! I bet you would get alot of business that way!!

People have been telling me about this place, and the candy store next-door, since I moved to Houston. So.... I dragged my new husband there the other afternoon and what a treat! The first thing you notice is the divine smell of chocolate, and the next thing is the bright colors of the decor. Very fun, eye catching and funky! Lot's of parents with their children but all were well behaved. Great, peppy music fills the store and the staff is so friendly. They showed us all the little chocolate "toy" items, which we bought as gifts for my nephew. What a great place to get things for a child's birthday party! I had some decadent chocolate ice cream and my husband had a creamy slice of dark, dense layer cake. I am a good baker but this cake was so amazing that I'm not sure how they achieved it! (Magic?!) We will be back....

I know there is more there... but... I... must... have... Aunt... Etta's!

Serioulsy, everything I've been able to try... which means... after I had a slice of Aunt Etta's... was very very good.

My wife and I saw it while visiting museums and decided to stop by and try it... were we ever
happy about that decision! It is now our "happy place".

Yes, the prices are a bit on the steep side... but after the first bite reaches your mouth... all of that particular concern goes flying out the window. Still we save it as a special treat place for us.
And for our kids as well. Which by the way, we've never had a problem with them in there. Hyped up on sugar or not.

The only con we ever deal with is trying to acquire a parking space... considering there is probably only 5 or so spaces in front of the place itself. But waiting for a space or walking a bit of a distance is well worth it in our eyes.

Go here! Eat Wonderful Chocolate! Be Happy!

I must first start by saying the Chocolate Bar is one of the most creative and amazing places I have ever been. The chocolate is great, workers are friendly and the ice cream is to die for! But I have to say something about the review posted about the lady who brought her children and believes she was treated rudely.
The name and the sloagan include the words "bar" and "happy hour" which should be the first indication that this store is geared towards adults. Secondly, the store is full of molded chocolate which equals FRAGILE items. If she was asked to leave, maybe it was because she was not supervising her children. The Chocolate Bar is not a playground, it is more like a museum of beautiful chocolate sculptures that I'm sure the kitchen staff spends a long time creating and packaging. Would you take your kids to the museum and let them run-a-muck ??? Let them pick up paintings and allow them to lean up against a glass case that held a piece of art. I don't think so.
I'm not saying that the Chocolate Bar isn't a place for kids. They have sweets, ice creams and cake. Who wouldn't want to treat their kids? All I'm saying is, if you are going to take your kids somewhere (anywhere) you should know that you are responsible for making sure that they behave. Ask them to look with their eyes and not touch. And if they won't obey you then get them a treat to-go.
Okay enough about kids....
If you are looking for a great cake, they have the best. Aunt Etta's, Triple Decadence, and Black Russian are some of my favorites. And OMG the ice cream is my new addiction. Try Creamy Dreamy Truffle, Triple Decadence (yes there is a cake and ice cream with the same name; someone is trying to tell us we should eat them together) and Root Beer Float. I can never get enough. I LOVE IT!

I was at The Chocolate Bar the first week they opened and followed its growth with the additions of the dessert gallery and then the candy boutique next door. As a certified chocolate and dessert junkie I can say this place eclipses most any I've experienced anywhere. This is including NYC and San Francisco. Having moved to L.A this is at the top of my list of places genuinely missed. While L.A has to have the market on healthy sweets including chocolates not sweetend with refined sugar, The Chocolate Bar reigns above pretty much everything and anything. This is worth blowing your diet for. The spirit needs a little indulgence every now and then. If you're feeling decadent or wanting to stray from all that is Macro-biotic this is your place. Go all the way and get a piece of cake top it with the White chocolate chip icecream and then get a bag of the mixed chocolate(dark, milk and white)chips and dump it on top. If you're looking to go out in a blaze of a sugarholic rush this will do the trick. I miss you Gilbert, Brit and Joannie, anyone thinking of a move to L.A?

I recently moved to San Francisco from Houston and I miss the Chocolate Bar so much. I think about the ice cream at least once a day. The root beer float is the best. It really tastes like root beer!!! I'm going back to Houston this weekend, but I'll only be in the 'burbs. I actually called one of my friends who lives in the loop and asked her to bring me a big thing of ice cream. If anyone in Houston would like to mail me root beer float ice cream, I would much appreciate it.

This is by far one of the premier after date dessert places in Houston. My wife and I never miss a chance to go by after dining out for a romantic date.

The Chocolate Bar is also an outstanding place to take the kids. We take ours after going to the zoo or the museums. They love it. Especially the ice cream.

I told my sister about it and she took my niece and her little frinds there for a princess party. Rave reviews all around from the four year olds and their mothers. They will all be sure to go back.

One thing to watch for. Parking is tight and make sure to go in slow due to the steep incline.

I laughed when I read that last review. That reviewer is none other than the owner of Chocolate Du Monde!
He is a very angry man. He is furious when he heard that The Chocolate Bar is planning to open a
6000Sq. foot store in Rice Village. So this is his retaliation. He actually lives in Garden Oaks, so it is amusing that he would use that name as his reviewing name!?? Actually very stupid. He should focus on his own store to make it the best it can be.
We would send people to his store looking for fudge or a specific brand of chocolate. BUT I guess that is out of the question now.
Business owners always should rally together to help with the final goal....lots of loyal customers. Not spend time BASHING the other stores. He must have way to much time on his hands...perhaps to lack of loyal customers!

This store is packed with clever little novelties--cell phones, hand tools, cars--all created in luxuriously rich chocolate. Through a large window at the rear, you can look into the preparation area where all this…
