I consider myself so lucky because I live a few blocks from Balcones Animal Hospital. However, I would drive across town to take my animals there. Both Dr. Woods (Sr. and Jr.) are so nice and educated about all animals (cats and dogs). Because I have so many animals they give me a break on cost. When I found out my oldest most adored cat was dying of kitty AIDS, I collasped and starting crying. They were so compassionate and took their time with me. They showed my how to give shots to make my cat more comfortable. By being able to give pain and nausau medication myself, I was able to be with him until the end. That was above and beyond in my book. Great service.

My dog had a severe seizure today that I could not get to stop despite using the methods that usually work. My vet told me to take him to the nearest vet for some much needed injections. I took Hugo to Dr. Woods (Sr.), and they took us in immediately. All the staff were kind & professional, and Dr. Woods treated Hugo quickly, effectively, & compassionately. Dr. Woods also spoke with Hugo's regular veterinarian to be more aware of his case & current meds. I felt such relief that Hugo received such great care. I am very grateful for their help!

Been using this vet for 7 years now and they are cost effective, good at what they do, and and just all around good people to do business with. Highly reconmmended by me and several of my friends use them as well and are all very pleased.

My dog died there. Never ever go there. Staff and Dr could care less. My dog would be alive had they taken an xray and not just prescribed drugs.
Place is also very old and dirty. Never NEVER Go there. Broken Hearted.

Love this clinic! Did a fabulous job with my dog and paid half the price of what other vets wanted to charge. Our dog even recuperated quicker than we thought she would.

Great place, awesome pet care & great price...I've taken two of my pets to Dr. Woods & not only is the staff friendly & know what they are doing but my cat who hates people felt really comfortable there. When I took her in for an 'issue of hers' & they were done they carried her out to me in their arms & she just laid there...which if you knew her you'd know that it meant she really liked em. I've always heard ~ Your pet knows best!!! well proof is in the puddin with my cat ~ not only do I thank you but my now deceased baby (doggy) Maverick & my mean cat Harley thank u Dr. Wood & your staff...

I am new in town and searched high and low for a reputable vet. I took my two cats to Dr. Wood (sr.) and left feeling satisfied and not ripped off. As soon as I got home my cat began to have a severe allergic reaction to his vaccinations. I took my cat immediately to Dr. Wood who gave him multiple shots and fluids. He also gave me prednizone to take home. They cleaned him up and offered to clean out his carrier. NOT only did they take excellent care of my cat who was incessantly vomiting, Dr. Wood did not charge me anything when I went back the second time, not even for the shots to reverse the vaccine. They truly care.

Before I write the rest of this, I will let you know that my dog Scarlett passed away last night after an ongoing battle with autoimmune disorder. By all rights Scarlett fought the odds on three occasions and I have to say Dr. Wood, both of them, saved my dog from near death twice before.About 7 years ago, a disc went out of her back and she was paralyzed for almost a week on her back legs. The odds were great she would never walk again, but she recovered completely in less than five weeks after Dr. Wood operated on her.Six months ago, Scarlett lost all her energy and they had to do immediate exploratory surgery. They removed her spleen, which was enlarged. I was waiting for her to have to be put to sleep, but once again she survived.Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with aiha shortly after and she was given various treatments to get her red blood count back up.Last night she decided she didn't want to fight anymore and went to sleep.I thank Dr. Woods, both of them and their daughter Lori and the staff for being so supportive and incredible with my dog. They helped me provide her a long and happy life. For a dog that had been abused and was gotten at a shelter, I tell you, that is not a bad thing.Anyone who wants an excellent vet all the way around should take their animals here. You won't be sorry, believe me.I thank god for them everyday.

This animal hospital is the best! They are friendly and you get the feeling that they truly care for the animals and are not just out to make a buck! In December my dog got poisoned by "rat poison" aka dog food. She got ill on a Sunday so I took her to a different vet to put it nicely they were clueless, that night she went to the animal ER where they could tell me nothing but hydrated her, Monday morning she goes to Dr. Wood what do you know he identifies the problem (with minimal tests) loaded her up on vitamin K and she was good to go. She went to 2 other vets who could not identify the problem and between the 2 they charged over $500 Dr Wood identified and treated the problem and I believe it was under $70 to save her life. The same 9lb poodle got hit by a UPS truck and her arm was seriously damaged Dr. Wood was an absolute miracle worker and my baby is fully healed with all 4 legs. Her surgery cost so little and her treatment was amazing. I can not say enough about the Doctors and the staff at this wonderful vet!

I love this Animal Hospital and their staff. They are very kind and caring, they genuinely care about your pets. I have two Boston Terriers that mean the world to me - this is where I take them for care. I have seen both Dr. Woods Sr.

My Boxer dog had a little accident last night and needed stitches. Went to another vet (24 hours) and they tried to make me pay $650 for cleaning and stitching my dog... they also had to put her to sleep AND keep her overnight.

I refused so they came back with another quote to clean and drugs (pain and antibiotics)... 150$. Just cleaning! no stitches!

I brought her back home call my regular vet (Balcones Animal Hospital) on their emergency line. They asked me many questions and told me to wait until the morning and be there early. I went... 30 minutes later I was out of there... My dog was cleaned, stitched with antibiotics for $117. No putting to sleep... no keeping for the day.

She is next to me... happy and sleeping. in 10 days will go back to remove the stitches.

I love this VET. Older gentlemen that has been around and know how to deal with animals. My Boxer love them! Staffs are friendly and all of them loves animals.

I have been taking my dogs to Dr. James Woods since 1976 and he has always been a caring wonderful vet. He especially is great at dealing with end of life issues and his compassion makes difficult decisions about beloved dogs easier. I took in a new rescue dog yesterday and he assessed her health and told me he appreciated that I had saved her. I have also seen his son Dr. Jason Woods and he is just as wonderful as his father.

If you are looking for quality vet services at a reasonable price try Balcones Animal Hospital.

Read such great reviews for Balcones Animal Hospital that I decided to try it today. Took all 3 of my dogs just for a general checkup. One of them had an ear infection. They were very personable, gave me lots of general information for keeping my pets healthy and affordable, and really loved on my pets too. Best of all, the cost was so low I couldn't believe it. They charged me what I would have expected to be the amount for 1 dog for all 3 dogs and most vets charge even more than that. Definitely recommend them. I had no problem getting an appt. and when I went there was only 1 other dog there. Highly recommend them.

We have taken our four-legged children to Dr. Wood for years. Everything from surgery (minor routine spays to major surgery for bladder stones) to check-ups and shots, to frantic sick animal calls.I know a lot of reviews mention not being able to get an appointment. I just now called and was offered either a tomorrow or the next day morning appointment. Yes, there have been times when they have been incredibly busy. Just like any other medical provider. But they do their best, and they truly care about both the pets, and their owners. I have never in my life met a more compassionate vet. (Either of them). They take the best care of all our family's cats, dogs, and rats. (Unfortunately, they do not do birds! I wish they did!)

Dr Wood has been amazing. After having to take my cat to a specialist, I ended up coming back to Dr. Wood so that he could explain the diagnosis in terms I could fully understand, and he has done so, without the extra charges the specialist wanted. He cares both about our pets and us as pet owners. Also, I think the staff has been just great and don't understand some of these reviews. I have always experienced prompt courteous service on appointments and they have excellent vet techs as well. Highly recommended!!!

Finally, through a referral, I found the vet I've been looking for. I have been driving out of town, over 2 hrs each way, to take my pets to someone I trust. My pets are very dear to me, to say the least, and I have had a terrible experience with The Cat Hospital on Pond Springs Rd who refused me help and thereby crippled my cat. They didn't know what to do and even though another vet told them what to do they charged me $200. You won't have any problems with Balcones vets. They are truly wonderful people and they won't break the bank for you.

I have read the previous reviews and can't believe some of them. I've been going to Dr. Woods for over twenty five years on and off (I've moved, but I always make the drive for anything other than routine visits, which I do with Dr. Graef in Taylor, also a great vet, but doesn't have all the equipment needed for some situations) Dr. Woods has always been so caring while being truthful and informative, explaining all the options for my elderly dogs, Don't believe the previous review about waiting two weeks. I've called many times for a semi serious situation and they've always fit me in within a day or two at the most, and of course if there's an emergency (I've had two snake bitten dogs) you're right in the door with either Dr. Woods or his son. Dr. Woods worked on my beloved Bonnie for two hours trying to save her life after being snake bitten. I can't say enough about my good experiences over the years with Dr. Woods and his son, Dr. Woods more recently. I know the reception staff is busy and can be businesslike at times, (friendlier lately, I must say) but overall, I would rate the whole team as A+. Price is only one consideration, you want to trust your vet with your pet's life and I trust these people immensely.

Unfortunately, this business has been hurt by it's success. It usually takes days or weeks to get an appointment. There are many other vets in the area who can fit you in the same day if you have a concern about your pet. We've been to Anderson Mill Animal Clinic and Research Pet and Bird Hospital and have been happier with them.

The fees is definitely the cheapest. However, it takes about two weeks to get an appointment. So you can only rely on them for regular checkup. Don't wait that long to take your sick pet to the vet!
They don't have a patient file system. All they put the patient's ""information"" on note cards. They can't never seem to find the right note card every time I went there and depends on me for H & P (history and physical).
Last time we took a very sick cat there and he suggested to put her on a renal diet. I was very suspicious of the ""little treatment."" I took the cat to a cat specialist. It turned out my cat was about to have renal failure and was severe dehydrated. My cat ended up in the cat hospital for 3 days to receive IV hydration, vitamins and monitoring.
It may cost more but I need a vet that can remember my cat's and dog's name and their medical history. They should not depend on me as the only source for all their medical history because they can't find the file all the time.

Knowing how expensive a trip to the Vet can be, I was apprehensive about calling to discuss my dog's condition. I just wanted to discuss possibilities for the condition and possibly avoid the trip to the Vet but I figured I would hear ""you will have to bring the dog in to be examined"". That isn't what I heard. The person who answered the phone took the time to listen to my dog's symptoms and the fact that he had the symptoms before. At no time did she say I had to bring him in. She even said I could try the antibiotics and cortizone treatments I had used the last time. This Vet has seen my dog before but only for annual exams. It was very pleasant to talk with someone who respected the knowledge that I had about my dog's symptoms and that we could discuss options. It is nice to hear that if I think it's allergies like it was the last time that I can just go ahead and give him his meds from last time even though they didn't see him for that or prescribe the meds. And on the other hand it's nice to hear that there were other options, to bring him in and get a shot to ""jump start"" the treatment. I just want my dog to be comfortable so after a wonderful conversation with this woman, I opted to bring my dog in for an exam and based on the exam hopefully get a quicker start to treatment. I was so pleased last year with the Vet and the Vet Tech when I brought him in for his annual exam and now I am even more pleased. And the fees are so reasonable.

This week Dr. Woods and his staff saved the life of my dog Ike who had pancreatitis. We are so relieved and feel very blessed that we found this practice. I have been here over 10 times and never left feeling that I had been overcharged or under treated. The staff is very hard working and they make an effort to make their services affordable which is not the case in Austin proper. Dr. Woods is so generous with his time that you feel guilty. I do not think the general public understands the stress that technicians and staff are under at Animal Hospitals and I learned that when the staff here had to help me in 2009 with the death of my dog Otis. The veterinary business is very hard on receptionists and techs I recommend that people show them the same respect that they are expecting because you do not know what pet traumas and grieving pet owners they have had to deal with before you. Friends and family who have followed me here are super happy. Thank you guys.

Brought my cat for allergies and he was given a steroid shot... all very reasonable. Cat had a reaction 2 weeks later which I understand now can sometimes happen with cats. Obviously there was no way this could have been known. However, they should have caught this when I brought him back. They then proceeded to over hydrate him and sent him home with me when he was breathing much too hard but of course, I assumed he was ok as they sent him home with me. The next day he went into congestive heart failure and I spent $$$$ at the emergency vet, with another vet (because I was not going to bring him back to this vet!!) and a cardiologist. He's fine now but no thanks to this vet. Yes, they're more reasonable in the pricing but at what cost????

I was so disapointed with this vet hospital. i have been taking my Dog there for a couple of times, but the last time was my final time. It was so over booked there that they gave my Dog his shots in the waiting room, I was so pissed offf because I wasnt even able to see the vet the last two timesI was there because they over booked so bad. The girls in the front are rude and look like they have pulled an all nighter. Then the final straw was whenI asked them to fax my Dogs paper work to my new Vet. They totally lost all of his files!! who does that?

called to get my dog a shot and bordatella for the weekend, and the receptionist basically told me that they were absolutely full and pretty much dismissed me altogether. I have read the other reviews, I can't even believe that girl still has a job.

I had to bring in my dog on short notice and when I entered the clinic I wasn't greeted I walked up to the front desk and the young receptionist there spoke to me in a very rude manner like I wasn't supposed to be there. I didn't feel welcome at all.
I'm shocked she is able to provide terrible customer service and is still allowed to work there. I know if I spoke to customer's at my job in that way I wouldn't have a job anymore.
On the other side you have the very friendly and knowledgeable vet and vet techs that make this place awesome. : ) So 5 starts for them and 0 for the receptionist.

I work for a veterinary company & had to make a phone call to this clinic for some information on one of their patients. First of all, the receptionist, Laura, answered the phone without even stating who she was (I had to ask her what her name was), how she could help etc. She answered it like I was putting her out by even calling their clinic (great first impression). She was extremely short, extremely rude & not one bit concerned about how she might be able to help. I speak to veterinary clinics for a good part of my day & having also worked at one for years as both a receptionist & a technician, I know how important it is to have good phone manners & how essential it is when getting new clients and keeping old ones. If I was a potential client calling around for information I can tell you without a doubt I wouldnt step foot in this clinic because of the first impression I recieved fromt this receptionist. This is extremely unpfrofessional and I hope she works on her attitude because it is definetly not an asset to this clinic.

I can't believe how rude this receptionist was to me on the phone yesterday. I work at a doggie daycare and boarding facility, and I was calling to have some vaccination records faxed over. The fax didn't go thru so I called back and I thought I was talking to the same [very nice lady] so I said ""Hi its me again, the fax did't go thru again so I was wondering if you could just verify over the phone?"" The lady cut me off and was very rude saying ""I didn't talk to you"". So after she told me part of what I needed, I asked her ""And what about...?"" and she cut me off again and said ""No thats all we gave her! Click......!"" and she hung up on me.

Me and my family have been going to Dr. Woods for approximately 30+ years and will not go to any other veterinary hospital! Dr. Woods and his staff are very considerate, makes you feel comfortable in any situation when it comes to your loved one's health status, and the full attention you need with him is worth the gas to drive to the location!

I've been going to this vet for almost 7 years now. I love both Dr. Woods Sr. & Jr. They are very knowledgeable and gentle with my animals. I have 4 dogs and 2 cats and have used these Dr's extensively and highly recommend them. Only one of my dogs doesn't like going to the vet - but thats only because she hates her nails being trimmed. The only problem I have is with one of the ladies at the front desk. She's kind of short with people and that's a turn off.

I have been taking my 3 dogs there since they were puppies - a total of 9 years now. I used to live right around the corner from the vet so it was very convenient at first. I moved to Hutto about 2 years ago and tried the local vet there and was soooo disappointed that I went right back to Dr. Woods. Even though his office is a little out of my way, the service and attention my dogs get there is well worth the trip! My oldest dog is an all white boxer and has issues with getting cyst and skin allergies all the time. I took him to have all his cyst removed (about 5) and the cost was half of what I expect to pay! I was very happy with the service and the results! I highly recommend Balcones to anyone who wants their pets to have the best vet care possible!!

My little doggie/best friend anyone could ever have(for 9 years) died there a few days ago. Never ever go there! They didn't give him the attention he needed when I took him there a month ago. I will never be the same. I have never been so broken. I trusted them and thought they knew what they were doing. Their lack of compassion crushed me. I literally have a physical heart ache losing my little companion.

My family has been using this clinic for all of our pets for decades and we love them. A few years back I had a cat who suddenly began wheezing very early in the morning. I called the clinic and a vet tech answered the phone. Although the clinic wasn't open yet, they allowed me to bring the little guy in early to be seen. Unfortunately, he died an hour later from choking (before the vet could stop it), but I was grateful for the clinic accomodating my emergency. Also, the vet was extremely kind on the phone when he told me about the death and allowed us to bury the cat on our own. Not only that, but I wasn't charged at all for the visit, which I greatly appreciated. Although my cat died, I was happy that I got such great treatment at the clinic.

We lost our first dog at age 11 after taking him to a generic 24 hr emergency clinic and being told it would be incredibly expensive to remove what was presumed to be a ruptured spleen. We agonized over not really knowing what it was that caught him so quickly.

I LOVE this vet and the staff. I drive about 40 mins to get to them but I wouldn't go anywhere else. Anybody that says a bad thing about the awesome people that work at Balcones Animal Hospital or the service was having a bad day. They are wonderful. I can not even tell you what they have done for my dog. They are so reasonable and caring. I work in the animal field and I can tell they truly care for animals. Mark my words I will never go anywhere else until they both retire ;o).

After relocating from NY we needed to find a dr for our cats. We took one recently to a Cat Hosital here in Austin, paid top dollar for an office visit and all she did was look at our cats teeth. No physical exam at all. Not satisfied at all with the ""exam"" ~ Our cat is 13 years old. We checked out the reviews and decided to take her to Dr. Wood. Dr. Wood did a complete exam on her and treated her great. We highly recommend their office for your pets care.

I first met Dr Woods 6 years ago when my little dog fell ill suddenly needing transfusions to attempt to fight a immune disorder she contracted suddenly after me being talked into a 6 month heartworm shot from our previous vet WellsBranch Pet and Bird Vet, I am pretty sure she was overdosed and ultimatly ended her life.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Wood and his staff. We have been using them for 4 years and are always so happy about their responsiveness, care and affordable fees. A few months ago, our pug was run over on 620 and his jaw was broken in several places and he had additional injuries. Dr. Wood rebuilt his jaw, stitched him up and basically put him back together-- he saved our dog! I was using citysearch to look him up because my older dog needs a geriatric visit and thought they deserved yet another good review! Lots of people put off vet care because it can be so expensive-- Dr. Wood and his team make it possible to give your pets the care they deserve!

I couldn't have been more pleased I commute into Austin everyday from Lexington, they wil have someone there to take your precious bundle of joy early (7am) and you can pick up afternoon.... they take the time to call & explain the situation to you in a kind/caring / matter of fact approach (similar to here is the problem, & here's solution A, B or C).... they make both you & your pet feel welcomed, safe and the exude confidence/kindness. Thankyou.

I took my lab, Sprocket to Dr. Woods after a disaster of an experience at Hill Country Vet in Cedar Park. Dr. Woods was recommended to me by SO many people, I just had to go. As busy as he is, the service couldn't be better. He always calls me personally and explains everything in a perfect manner. He has the most fair prices in town, and often offers home remedies when money is tight. What a good, old fashioned guy, and great business. I'll never take my pets anywhere else!

My kitty had deveoped a pretty scarry looking eye infection and since I had only used Austin Animal Trustees for shots and spaying I did not have a vet. I called around near my home and found that the vets were either booked up or a bit snooty to me. I refuse to pay people to be rude to me so I kept dialing the phone until I found Dr Wood's clinic. The woman who answered the phone was friendly and was able to schedule an appointment for Sophie right away. Dr Woods checked out her eye and provided the eye drops with very clear instuctions on how and when to use them. I felt so good about the place that I scheduled my male kitty an appointment for his annual check up the following weekend. It was a good experience as well.

After being taken to the cleaners by Wells Branch Pet and Bird clinic over our dog's re-occurring skin infection, as a last desperate attempt to save his life we came to get a second opinion from Doctor Woods. Within the first few minutes of the visit, doctor Woods knew it was a thyroid problem, and ordered a T-4 test. We had spent thousands of dollars at the previous vet, and they never even thought to check the thyroid. They had finally told us it was an auto-immune disease and there was nothing more that could be done.

I visited Balcones Animal Hospital with one of my pets, as I am in the market for a new vet. After reading the great reviews here, I decided to give it a try. I made the appointment easily, but wondered why I was not asked for my phone number (what if the appt needed to be cancelled by the office for some reason?). The hospital itself is a bit worn indeed. But, that did not deter me, as I'd rather have a great vet with a heavily used office than a so-so vet in a state of the art office. The front desk lady was very friendly. I felt a bit uneasy to have to take my cat out of his kennel in the front lobby to be weighed (what if he had bolted and had to be chased frantically around the office? Just a thought). The wait time was average. The first person who arrived in the room I assumed was the vet assistant (he didn't introduce himself). He quickly began to give 3 shots and a nasal medication, without nary a word as to what he was doing. I did end up asking about the nasal med as this cat had never received it before, and he did end up explaining to me sufficiently what it was for. I assume the next person to come in was the vet, as he did not introduce himself either. He was quite friendly though with an appealing sense of humor. We needed to schedule an office procedure. My husband dropped off said cat in the am. He said it was very busy and he had a 10minute wait in line. He also had to take the cat out of the kennel for a weight (see above comment regarding this procedure). There wasn't any feedback as to how the procedure went, or what all was done. The bill he was given was hand written, and a couple of the charges were illegible . All in all, nothing really bad about this office, but there are enough odd things that occurred that will keep me looking for a new Veterinarian

I don't know why anyone would take their animal anywhere else. It is nice to find a vet that actually cares more about your animal than selling you stuff you don't need. Everyone there was extremly nice and helpful. It was also very affordable. I am so glad I found this place!
