Have taken a friend many times to the clinic and visited her in the hospital--not encountered one unfriendly staff member or unclean room in this hospital!! Ben Taub has to serve way too many people and it is a miracle that those personnel remain patient and friendly--give them a break!! If people that have only minor illnesses (runny noses etc) would stay out of the ER--maybe there would be room for the serious trauma they need to be caring for. (same goes for most ER's in the city)

Horrible hospital.. I went there because I was having contractions. The nurse make me wait for like an hour than she came back and said."" You are ok u can go home, u just have to drink water. The next day I started to feel contractions again I went to another hospital and the doctor told me that I was 8 centimeters and my baby can born in any time.. I will never but NEVER NEVER go to ben taub again

First time experience. And we paid for nothing. 10 Hr. wait. Unorganized. patient rights are not respected. Your "advocate" has to stay out even when speaking w/doctor. They need to teach staff to finish with one patient at a time. Then things would run faster.(if they have blood, urine, pressure)easy things should be done at once. They don't even label some of the tests.
Have always had insurance.Lost income and ended up on GOLD CARD(hchd). We always go to the clinic with appt. They will not refer u. pain and blood levels still bad so went to ER. Ben TAub has way to many "clinic" clients, homeless or patients from the psychiatric ward next door? =)
There should not be any taxes raised for this.
Then everyone will soon be in this system.

I have to disagree with both reviews. My brother has been in Ben Taub for several days and has had great care from doctors and nurses alike. Doctors come several times throughout the day to talk to him and nurses have been very willing to please. Everyone has been very nice. The food is not the best but what hospital has good food. The nurses have even been bringing him sandwiches in the evening! I am actually more pleased with Ben Taub than with some of the other hospitals! So please don't let the other reviews scare you because we have had just the opposite experience.

Not much can be said, if you want to share limited resource with 2 million other uninsured Houstonians, don't expect quality.

This has got to be the absolute WORST place on the planet to be if you need medical treatment! When I was laid off, I also lost my insurance and my wife ended up in the hospital. For 7 days they tried to diagnose and still no results. It's a teaching hospital and apparantly even the majority of the Doctors could use a refresher course! The nurses ignore the patients calls, didn't refill IV bags when they emptied for an hour or more, etc.

I realize that some people have to go here but the service is simply the worst.

PROS:
CONS: Couldn't get out fast enough!

NEVER GO THERE YOU MAY DIE WAITING!!!
I cant believe this hospital had my daughter wait 11 HOURS before they treated her asthma. She was wheezing, couldnt talk or barely walk and they said she was fine! Then these bastids kept threatening

To be honest in my personal experiance, this hospital seems to get good reviews from family members and friends about how through the doctors are and how well they are treated. I have only gone once to this hospital and the wait was out

I am a police accident investigator, and have been to this hospital on numerous occasions as part of a followup investigation, watched them work in the shock rooms. This is quite simply one of the best hospitals in the country for trauma.

I check every once in a while to see what the word on the street is about Ben Taub. I have been a Ben Taub employee for 10 months now and I am involved in direct patient care. Here are my thoughts...

Everyone I work with is completly comitted to their jobs. We choose to come to Ben Taub every day to serve the public regardless of abilty to pay. We are overworked and underpaid and still manage to put a smile on our face and get the job done. We want to be there. Yes the waits are long and the building isnt always the cleanest but patient care is something we take VERY seriously. One way to change some of the things people bitch about is to not treat our emergency room as a doctors office. Colds and ear aches are not an emergency. I speak not only for myself but for many of my coworkers in saying we are proud to be Harris County Hospital District employees and I think we do a damn good job!!

I have read the reviews about how to avoid and to stay away from this Hospital. But it is what it is. Yes, the long waits are unpleasant and it would be nice if things went faster. But people have to remember that a high volume of patients pass through the ER doors every day. What people don't see is that if they are in the large waiting room are all of the traffic that is coming through the Ambulance entrance. . Due to the high volume of level 1-trauma cases, (serious life threatening), this hospital boasts a degree of expertise that many other hospitals don't have. Yes, the beds in the ER are close together. That's for a reason. I have been to many ER's in my life but never have I seen the level of expertise that Ben Tuabs ER has. With the exception of a certain security guard, I found the personnel to be friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help. If I have an emergency situation, there is absolutely nowhere else that I would go except for Ben Taub. They are simply the best trauma center in Texas and some would argue in the US. I want to thank them for saving my life. They are truly a Godsend!!

Pros: Best Hospital for ER Trauma care.

Cons: Triage requirements result in long waits

Like many folks we lost our insurance and for the first time needed help and the Gold Card has been a blessing.
My husband has had tests and eye surgery due to damage from his diabetes. I have been under going test for other things so we have made many trips. The doctors and staff have been very nice . There is one very rude woman who works in a waiting area on the 2nd floor.
I am handicap and generally need his assistance. Neither of us have the greatest hearing ,so waiting in the area there is difficult. The rude woman informed everyone ,only the patient could stay in the area , no exceptions which makes it next to impossible for me. Luckily lately my tests have sent me to a different waiting area .
I try to avoid crowded areas anyway since my immune system is weak.
Parking is very expensive . It would be nice to give discounts to frequent seniors on the gold card plan. It is rare to get a handicap parking space ,even in the garage. My husband has charcot foot due to his diabetes and he is suppose to limit his walking.
The other day I rode up to the floor our car was parked on since he said he was close to the elevators ,a rare time.
After we exited the elevator , we hit a divider thing in the pavement and I was literally tossed out face first onto the pavement. It startled me, knocked the wind out and I hurt like crazy on my right side..Seems like without knowing my reflexes caused me to reachout my left arm to catch myself so I basically only hurt my hand and knee. No biggie , the joints are pretty sore normally anyway . My knee has no cushion between the bones due to deteriation. Bruising ,soreness and acute embarrassment I can get over.:)
I only mention this so they may consider checking the area for improvements for clumsy seniors with wheelchairs and walkers.

Took my girlfriend there to the emergence room at 9:00pm. We were in the waiting room for 13 hours before she was even seen by a doctor. The exam area made me think of a MASH unit, with beds lined up against the walls very packed and close together. The visiting times did not make sense because I could only go back for 30 minutes at a time. Also, no one would ever give us any information at any regular times. We had to wait and wait just so the doctor could tell us that they had to make an appointment for surgery and one of the clinics. Then after the clinic visit, they STILL sent her home, just to bring her back at the end of the week. I dont understand why they call it an emergency room if you have to wait so dang long to even see the doctor. And she was referred by another hospital and it was stated as ASAP!. Restrooms are nasty, waiting room uncomfortable for that long of a stay.

The ER is a nightmare. Lack of care. Lack of compassion. Lack of professionalism. This is not a place you choose for emergency care.

Nightmare! Filthy! I ve never been to a hospitol where there is no soap in the restroom. No one can give you a patients status, or how long it will take. Was in waiting room for 14 hours before I had to give up, go home, and hope the person I took there could find a way to contact me! Oh yes ...and the floors are dirtier than a gas station restroom!

Very poor! I was merely trying to get a listing of a particular department and phone number; there was no such resource or place to type what I needed on this website.
