In Short
Lined with vintage photos and ranch artifacts, including the re-created fabrication of a 150-year-old barn, Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse does a modern version of cowboy cuisine, with steak and game from the Kerrville ranch of the same name. The steaks may be prime, but game dishes such as buffalo filet mignon prove harder to resist. The legendary smoked potatoes, available baked or mashed, are a popular side. Staff and atmosphere are warm and welcoming.

Key Points

  • Authentic Texas Steakhouse
  • Private Dining
  • Wild Game & Prime-Aged Steaks

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Soft tacos filled with smoked beef and boar sausage offer an affordable snapshot of YO's menu.
  2. Know Before You Go - Lunch menu nearly surpasses dinner, with buffalo burgers, chicken fried steak done five ways, and the famed "Bob Armstrong" queso dip, a legacy of former chef Matt Martinez.

Tasty, but service inconsistent

by Carol B. | insider Insider | Rank: 19,036

The food at Y.O. is very good and is a pretty good value. I really love the complimentary banana pudding, just make sure you get there early :). The one think that sometimes lacks is the service. I've been here several times and even though they seem to be adequately staffed each time, sometimes the service is very good and other times it's not. Did I mention the banana pudding? Yum!

Great Texas Steakhouse

by Tim B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,104

This is a great, casual steakhouse with very moderate prices. You can get a steak and sides for $30 a plate before tips and drinks. Its got a great bar and atmosphere, and there are many other food options. This is, or was, partially owned by Matt Martinez, who does a great job with Tex-Mex and wild game, but of which are on the menu. Service is good, and it open for lunch and dinner. This a great place.

Great Great Great Food!

by LadyTexasLady

This place is becoming, by far, one of my favorite restaurants in the entire state!! I've been around long enough to know a thing or two spottin something special when it comes a long..... and let me tell you --- This place hits the nail on the head! Their steaks are all very different and all very good. The Mac and Cheese is to die for. The deserts are mouthwatering. The history of the Ranch for which this place was named is unparralled. The only thing I don't absolutely love is the Mashed Potatoes... But my late husband loved them, so maybe give them a try and decide for yourself. Overall though, I'm tellin ya, this is one heck of a place. Here's a "Thank ya Darlin" to whoever's idea this place was. Yall do a good job so stick to your guns.

Pros: Food, Location, Deco, Service, Wine Selection

Cons: Not open for breakfast

Darn good staek

by wendyyork

What makes a steakhouse in texas a true steakhouse? Well, go to YO Ranch and you will see. Lots of shoices in dallas for a steakhouse, but never will you find a finer example of what a steakhouse in texas should be. They also have wild game, staeks ( of course), fish and a full catering facility as well as party rooms for what looked like 200+. So weather you are a tourist looking for a great steak in dallas or just a local like me that love to pretend she is in need of tourist information on steaks this is a fantastic place and the price woun't break you either :)

Pros: TRUE Texas Steakhouse!

Cons: none

O.K. Steak House

by juanmore

Very small bar area!! If the stools are all occupied, then you have a one foot space to stand for a drink. The location is great (West End Historic District), which has a lot of other bars you can go to before or after having dinner here. I had the Cowboy bone-in Ribeye cooked med. It was a "good" piece, not the greatest but "good". It could have been more tender in the sections that where away from the bone, maybe it needed to contain more marbling or to be aged more. But the section closest to the bone were to die for! My Wife had the halibut but we sent it back because it was way too fishy. NOW here is where Y.O. shows it is a great place; the halibut was taken back w/no questions, only apologies. The waiter then asked what dish would my Wife like instead. She ordered the chicken in a mushroom reduction sauce that was excellent. When the check arrived, I saw that the didn't charge us for the halibut nor the chicken replacement. The waiter explained that their fish is always fresh and never frozen. Hey, it happens. We where in Dallas for the NY Giants vs Cowboys game in December 2008 plus celebrating my 40th. Y.O. gave me a slice of their chocolate cake from their dessert menu; very good. I will be back!

Pros: Excellent service, atmosphere, location...

Cons: Small bar area.

Amazing Buffalo Filet Mignon

by huskyduck

The buffalo filet mignon was the most tender piece of meat I have ever eaten. Grilled over mesquite medium rare, I literally was able to cut this fine filet with a fork. The meat had the most pleasant aroma of mesquite wood. The baked potato also had a strong mesquite smoky flavor and I learned that YO bakes their tators over mesquite for 4 hours. Never had a baked potato so good and I am not a baked potato fan usually. Grilled spinach was an excellent side dish. A very good wine list, I had a very good Texas cabernet sauvignon which pleasantly surprised me because I never associated Texas with great wine.

Pros: Great Buffalo Steak; Incredible Baked Potato

INCREDIBLY Overpriced. Mediocre service.

by pilotjosh25

By far the biggest negative item here are the prices. Approx $40 for a charred, fatty ribeye. We were in a large group and they recommended their "special appetizer" which was 3 pizza pans of something that looked inedible. It was cornbread with cheese, 4 shrimp, 2 small pieces of boar sausage, and tiny quail legs. It was $110!!! Tasted ok, but $110? My wedge salad was SWIMMING in bleu cheese dressing. Our server was a bit too glib. At least my martini was good but it isn't too hard to pour vodka in a shaker. Stay away from this place it just isn't worth it.

Pros: None that I can think of.

Cons: Price, Location, Poor Service.

Come live the Legend at the Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse

by P1Stokes

The thing about Dallas is there are too many places that try to pass themselves off as authentic, down-home western spots. If you want the "real McCoy," Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse is about as authentic as they come. Owner Charles Schreiner IV is part of the Y.O. Ranch family located in the Hill Country of Central Texas. The menu reflects everything indigenous to the Lone Star State. If it roams the range, chances are you'll find it on the menu. There's plenty of steak, but what makes Y.O. unique are the game meat entrees like venison, quail, buffalo mignon and elk chops. Out-of-town guests will love the bucolic atmosphere with old photos of life on the ranch, ropes, saddles and other rustic relics. Head on down in a pair a jeans and your most comfortable sport coat, grab a beer, and soak up some genuine Texas flavor.

Pros: food, service, atmosphere, valet parking

Cons: self parking - that if you dont want to valet

Fun Time at the YO Ranch

by GETJERRY

I had a great experience at the YO Ranch. The food at my table, with all my friends, was fantastic. I had the bacon cheese burger that was out of this world. The atmosphere was nice and I love the new addition. The bar was fun and the bartenders are nice. Speaking of service, Daniel was our server and he was fantastic. Great personality and made us feel that he was glad we dined there. I will recommend to all my friends and family. It's always nice to have such a great place so close to where I live downtown. Great job YO!

Pros: Ambience, Servers, Food, Drinks

Cons: None to mention but maybe parking

Fun to watch those out-of -town folks while enjoying first-rate authentic Texas food. Our waitress was gorgeous and a real pro. Go to the YO especially if you're lucky enough to live in the DFW Metroplex.

Pros: close to downtown entertainment.

Cons: it's not for sale

Great atmosphere and the BEST food!!!

by troy32s

Service is incredible! Food is amazing! I live in Roanoke and it was well worth the drive!!! Another nice surprise was that it wasnt as expensive as most of the other steakhouses in the metroplex. Ask for the Loui's rollups if you go... very different and has a great taste!

Great Atmosphere - Fantastic Food!

by russell_pulliam

Whether you are on date night with your spouse or hosting a business party the Y-O is perfect and we have done both many times. I love the Buffalo and my wife loves the steak selection. The quality of the food is excellent and the service you receive is just a bonus. We reside in Tarrant County so anytime we are in the area we make this a destination of ours. If I could change one thing it would be to add a location closer so we could go more often! Y-O please think North East Tarrant County - Keller/Southlake/Grapevine.

Incredible steaks and authentic Texas ambience

by yehudi23

Firstly, this is THE place to take your out-of-town friends and family when they're looking for a Texas dining experience. But if you haven't been there yourself, don't wait for the visitors. The food is incredible, the folks that work there are friendly and the restaurant is like a museum of Texana. If that's not enough, it's very affordable and not the least bit snooty, like some area steak houses. For the sportsman and the adventurous diner, the menu offers a wide range of exotic game. They've got a lot of room, too, if you're planning a group dining event or party. It's rare to find a place that's so interesting, so much fun and so palate-tempting. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: top-notch food, attentive service, casual atmosphere, linked to the historic Y.O. Ranch

Cons: none

patio dining taken up a notch

by frylira

my guests and i were thrilled to have such a remarkable meal while kicking back on the comfortable patio at the y. o. ranch steakhouse...forget the usual fare...try tender quail as an appitizer with the perfectly balanced sweet/slightly spicy sauce....we had a mixed grill of nightly game offerings on the table and a show-stopping buffalo filet mignon...the boneless ribeye was beatifully marbled as prime beef shoud be...some of the sides are pretty special...we had the gouda mac and cheese and a sweet potato that was nutritious and as big as texas... the lasting memory of this place was how warmly we were treated by all....what a blast...thanks y.o.

Buffalo steak will melt in your mouth!

by dangouge

The YO Ranch Steak House is one best places to eat in all of north Texas. The best steak I have ever had is the buffalo steak. It is so tender you can cut it with your fork. There is not a bad item on the menu and I have tried them all. If you like margaritas do yourself a favor and ask for the top shelf margarita. You Will want more than one. Very, very,Smooooth! The service is great and everyone is very friendly. If you want to impress your friends from out of town this is the place you want to take them. Parking is good and it is easy to get to from I-35.

Event planners, family reunions, romantic setting... should write the number down in their book! Food, service, atmosphere!

by technoir

As a New Yorker who deals with a very competitive restaurant environment, I was so very impressed with the service, atmosphere and FOOD, this Y.O. Ranch place has. Our waiter was actually a Texan-New Yorker with the best attitude and professionalism. In numerous trips to Dallas, I've taken international visitors with me on both business and private level and they were all absolutely impressed with the FOOD, location and again, the service. YO It truly gives us Texas without overselling it.

The meat choices are diverse. Also a very pleasing atmosphere; I sent the link to their website to friends all over place. If we just had a YO Ranch in Manhattan or Brooklyn....
My friends in Austin are also asking for their Y.O.! Who ever's in charge, please line up your investors!

Pros: The food!, original ambiance, great service, flexible to different situations

Cons: No branches in New York City or Austin! When????

The Old West - but much better

by stewartlytle

My wife and I and two friends ate at the Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse a few weeks ago. It was the best meal I have ever had in Dallas -- or any other place. The Buffalo tenderloin was outstanding. The tortilla soup is the best ever. Where did they find that recipe? The new expansion makes the Old West look like it should -- not a Hollywood version, but elegant and sophisticated, while having humorous and authentic touches throughout. Behind the bar are photos of the female Schreiner family members. Nice touch. There is no other place that serves such a great steak and wild game. Being partners with the Schreiner family which has owned the huge Y.O. Ranch in the Texas Hill Country since 1880 has made this restaurant a truly special place in downtown Dallas. When in Dallas, the Y.O. is a must stop. It even has its own beer, although I prefer a cold Shiner Bock in a Y.O. glass. Stewart Lytle, Newburyport, MA

Pros: Food, ambiance, service, value, not a chain

Cons: couldn't find any

Best Steakhouse

by skootercaptain

Whenever I'm in Downtown Dallas I must visit the Y.O. Steakhouse. If visitors ask me where is the best place to get a steak, since they are in Texas! I tell them the YO. And either give them directions or walk them over there personally, it's that great. Another thing, the finest staff of any resturant I've ever known! Wonderful friendly folks all. Pros: steaks/staff

Cons: none

Steaks from Heaven

by williamchesna

Steaks From Heaven: This is a must stop when visiting Dallas, Texas. The steaks really are the best
I have ever had, and to visited several times, and never been disappointed at all makes this a place to brag about. Topped off the dinner with a nice desert and espresso which also was extremely nice. Very nice service and the even met the owner who showed me around the place that really has a great Ranch history. I haven't tried the all of the cuts yet, but the New York strip is usually my pick, and
Y O Ranch Steakhouse really does it right.
