Great, fresh sushi at decent prices. This place is hardly packed but definitely worth stopping in for their rolls. Be sure to try the "Spicy Susan" or "Spicy Carlos" rolls that are not on the menu. You won't regret it!

I have not had a bad meal here and have been dining here regularly, at least once/month, since about 2001.
They do need to be a bit more flexible with regard to seating policy, however, there have been times when I arranged to meet friends there when it was not at all busy-- many, many empty tables- yet they refused to seat us until all were present. I can understand that at peak times, but not when the place is practically empty.

Not on the meenu:
Spicy Carlos is to die for! Susan is a close second. Yaki Maki takes at least 20 minutes but it is wonderful: California roll topped with crab and scallop and a cheese topping then broiled until warm. Awesome!

Bentos for lunch are really good. I recommend the beef.

Miso is good. Edamame is good. Rice is sticky with a hint of vinegar. Perfect sushi spot. My family an I really enjoy it time and time again.

Friendly wait staff.

I love love love Sushi Sake. I am very excited that they opened another restaraunt downtown called Yu sushi. My favorite thing to order is their Spicy Carlos Roll, it is the best sushi roll that I have ever had. It has a combination of different flavors that make it very unique. It is not on the menu, you have to special order it. I go eat there all the time lunch & dinner, and If I had to choose over any other sushi restaraunt, I would choose Sushi-Sake

I had high expectations after reading the reviews on this site, but I must say I was sorely disappointed. I arrived prior to the other person in my party and was told that I could not be seated until he arrived. I understand this policy...when a restaurant is busy. However, over half the tables in the restaurant were empty. The host was quite rude about it too. Once I was sat, I noticed that the table was dirty and I had to use my napkin to clean off soy sauce and rice from a previous customer.

When my server approached the table he seemed hurried and annoyed. I ordered a spider hand roll and waited about ten minutes to get it. Once it arrived it tasted very strange. It had a grainy texture and was not good. I asked the server if I had gotten the correct roll and he proceeded to tell me that he thought I had, but he needed to "inspect it" closer up. He took the roll from the table then returned with the same roll about a minute later.

The server told me that he smelled it and it smelled like crab. Hmm, the roll was even less appetizing now. My server SMELLED my food, to determine that I had been served the correct item. I told him it did not taste right and he shrugged his shoulders. He did not offer to correct it or bring me something else. BAD customer service. We then proceeded to order three more rolls. The tempura shrimps was ok, but our other rolls were sub par. Small and tasteless.

I was very disappointed in the food and the service at Sushi Sake. I will definitely not be returning. The only reason I gave it two stars is because the interior was nicely decorated.

The sushi is pretty good! I've only been at lunch time (lunchtime specials). The prices are somewhat high, even at lunch time...but I know the dinner prices are much higher!

I LOVE sushi. But good sushi has 'ruined' me, in the sense that if I am in the mood for sushi, I can't just eat cheap sushi and be satisfied. The rice has to be just right, the fish fresh, the seaweed fresh. I have been just about everywhere in town, and Sushi Sake has been consistently excellent. They have never let me down in their quality. I'd recommend Sushi Sake hands down to anyone who loves sushi as much as I do, and to those who want to try it for the first time, alike. Oh-- and the Spicy Carlos, and Spicy Susan rolls are not to be missed (they're also not on the menu)-- they are excellent for those who are new to the sushi experience.

The fish is the freshest and the rolls are so creative! We had the spicy Carlos Roll- Excellent! The Escolar and Salmon were mouth watering good. I cannot recommend Sushi Sake enough. Even the service was great. We never wanted for anything and were able to take our time and enjoy the entire experience. It may not be for people who go for the California rolls, but if you like real sushi- Sushi Sake is the place to be!

The sushi is not that great in Sushi Sake. We had the California roll and Spider roll there. The sushi rice is great, moist with fine texture. However, the overall taste just wasn?t good. The Spider rolls taste?
very fishy. After I had a bite of it, I felt like I needed to drink a lot of tea to cover up the bad taste. I won?t recommend this place to anyone. Pricey for that quality of food.

I really like to sit up at the Sushi bar and chat with this one particular Sushi chef - Agila (sp?). It's not on the menu, but Agila will make us this "Spicy Susan Roll" which is just incredible. It's a regular spicy tuna roll with salmon on top and then this Agila's special spicy sauce. We then order a wide variety of both sushi and sushi rolls - some of my favorites are the spicy tuna and the unagi (crispy eel in this delicious sauce). I always get their hot green tea which definitely is hot. I have to pick up my cup using a napkin. Then I top it all off with some of their green tea ice cream! That's what I'm talking about.

Having moved here from San Francisco we were spoiled with delicious Asian cuisine. This place is the closest so far to what we had in California. Very tasty and reasonably priced. Ambiance was very nice and the staff was friendly. So far my favorite sushi in Austin.

It was a good sushi restaurant.until recently when we had the worst service we've ever seen. The waitress was rude and impolite even though we ordered a good amount of food. We haven't finished eating yet, but the waitress already took the plates from the table. The food was so-so.

Let me start out with a little background. I'm a sushi nut. I like it all cooked, raw, traditional and unusual. I am on a first name basis with my sushi chef in what every town I live in. So I know my sushi. The atmosphere is nice and the severs are courteous, but what makes this place a standout is Angel. Make sure you pull up to the sushi bar and have Angel make you some of his special sushi rolls. He is a creative genius and all around delight to eat with. The fish is fresh and delicious. Tell him what kind of fish you like (when it's not really busy) and he can come up with something to knock your socks off every time. He also does great traditional style sushi as well as spicy concoctions that infuse the Latin and Japanese flavors beautifully. There is always something new to try. I can not comment on anything other than sushi on the menu, because sushi is all I ever eat.
If Angel is not available Sean is also fantastic too.

BEST SUSHI PLACE IN TOWN(ON THIS PLANET)
--My wife & I are new in town! We happened to be in the shopping center during the holiday one night doing some shopping. We were checking out all the outlets and ran into Sushi Sake. Guess what, we went in and hoping that the restaurant will be impressive because we usually dine at standing restaurant only!To our surprise, this restaurant overwhelming exceeded our expectations. The decors & ambience were very nice. While we were waiting for a table at the drinking bar , the friendly staffs were very courteous & helpful by asking us if we needed a cocktail or drinks. Since we said no and there were nothing in front of us, other staff members & manager also tried to offer us something. We could not believed that the staffs really went out of their way to take care of thier customers!!! Anyway the food & services were impeccable(spicy Susan roll the waitress suggested) and the price was worthed it. We definately will be back again. CHEERS!

I eat sushi several times a week. Have eaten here many times, and every time has perfect food and perfect service. We keep trying all the "hot new places" to eat sushi around town, and everytime my wife and I say that we should just stick to Sushi Sake. Order the Spicy Susan and Spicy Carlos, they are the best rolls in town, and I really have tried them all.

DO NOT EAT AT SUSHI SAKE.

The quality of food is bad; the store manager is really ill-mannered and doesn't value customers.

I had lunch with my friends at Sushi Sake last Friday.

The lunch menu one of my friends got wasn't served in right way.

The ginger was all mixed up with wasabi and other foods were arranged in a little awkward way.

We hoped that the taste would have been able to compensate for the poor appearance.
But the taste was even worse. She told us that a sushi she just had tasted something moldy and spat it out. She called the store manager and explained the whole situation.

You know what?

To my surprise, he never said 'sorry' to her and tried to change only the parts of the dish she complained about.

I've never seen any restaurant or waitress/ waiter/ even STORE MANAGER respond toward a customer's complaint like that.
His arrogant attitude showed that he considered her complaint as a false - accusation to get a new fresh food, or something like that.

A few moments later, she had another chance to point out his ill-mannered attitude.
And I couldn't believe my ears when I heard what he said to her.

"If you don't like it, don't come back."

What kind of manager is he? How could he treat customers like that?

Yes! We won?t come back ever again. And tell this story all around.

PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY FOR POOR QUALITY FOOD AND BAD SERVICE.

Sushi Sake offers a little known menu selection called Shabu Shabu. It's difficult to find outside of L.A. and San Fransisco, but Sushi Sake hits a home run with their rendition. Shabu Shabu is Japanese for "Swish swish", a reference to the motion you use to cook your own thinly sliced beef and veggies (using chopsticks) in a boiling bowl of water. Rarely served the same way twice, it has always been nothing less than superb. Unfortunately they do not serve this dish on weekends.

We went to Sushi Sake for a friend's birthday. The service was terrible--the waitress waiting on us waited 30 minutes to approach us and take our drink order. Then, she gave everyone the wrong drinks. The food, however, partially made up for all of this. The specialty house rolls, The Spicy Susan and The Spicy Carlos, were outstanding!! I very highly recommend them. The rest was not very good--my husband loves salmon and our salmon sushi was so chewy and hard-ish that he ate one piece of it and couldn't eat anything else, and we had a lot of food left. The other roll we ordered was completely unremarkable. I don't think we'll be back, unless I get a irrepressable craving for the outstanding specialty rolls (Susan & Carlos). If we do ever go back, I can guarantee it won't be on the weekend, because the wait is certainly not worth the experience. After asking for our check 3 times, we finally got it and were surprised that it was what we normally pay at Uchi, even though the rolls run around $8-10 each. Uchi kills this place, and I would much rather put my money where the food is good.

Sushi Sake is one of the best sushi restaurants I have been to in Austin (and I have been to a lot of them). I believe that Uchi may use fresher fish, but it comes at higher price. Sushi sake is a romantic restaurant that can be used for groups (where you can request the traditional Japanese sitting if your group is large enough). For a fun drink, I recommend the Wasabi Martini (extra wasabi for an extra kick). Generally when I go to restaurants, I like to try the specialty rolls. I strongly recommend getting the Spicy Susan roll (my favorite every time). There is also their deep fried phoenix roll, caterpillar, dragon, and you might still be able to order the Spicy Carlos (for those in the know).

We were in the restaurant on a very busy Saturday night with another couple around eight o' clock. We got on the waiting list that were told about thirty minutes; so we just ordered some bar drinks to pass time. Incredibly one of the signature drinks that we ordered was delicious and beautifully prepared. We continued to enjoy our evening with our friends when our names were called. We were very surprised that it was just probably 15 minutes has lapsed, and funniest of all that one of the staff jokingly humored us that he lied about the waiting time!!! We were greeted by Charley at her table and the rest of our dining experience were beyond excellent. The sushi, shrimp tempura & services were outstanding. I am also in the foodservice industry and I have never seen such a teamwork astmophere that evolved with the personnels from busperson to host/hostess to manager. I really tipped my hat to Sushi Sake establishment. Lastly of course we will be coming back frequently!!!

The service greets you professionally but rarely follows through.
They forget to follow up on orders they place at the sushi bar.

The table seated after you may get exactly what you ordered before you
do. Not getting what you ordered at all has happened a couple of times.
Worst of all, the manager's attitude is the best reason to stay away.

They never offer to make good on their errors and as noted in another
review, the manager will be combative.

The sushi is average to good, the hot food can be dry.

I live close to this place, been there many times - I've just had enough.

Ok this sushi is not the best in town. Let's not be overdramatic. But it is good particularly for the price. The chef takes special requests & the staff is friendly. Sit at the sushi bar and you get a hot towel and an orange at the end of your meal. There are better/higher quality sushi places in town, but this is pretty good especially if you dont want to wait for hours or break the bank.

We are pretty avid sushi eaters and heard good things about Sushi/Sake so we decided to try it this weekend and we were not disappointed. We walked right in and were seated on Friday night around 7, which doesn't happen in this city. The waitress informed us of two sushi rolls that were not on the menu ( i liked the spicy susan). Our edamame came very quickly, as did any nigiri we ordered. Some of the rolls followed shortly after. It took a little longer for the special rolls, but we were having a leasurly dinner so it didn't bother us. Our waitress was very attentive and made excellent recommendations. Overall it was a very pleasant experience

Ok, we went to this sushi restaurant on Friday night. The place looks very nice, the ambience was good, and the place was pretty busy. We are avid sushi fans, we lived in Japan for years while I was in service and we have a pretty good idea what a sushi should be, and better yet what is NOT good sushi.
We ordered 3 different items from the sushi bar and Miso for soup. About 30 seconds after our Miso soup arrived so did 2 of the 3 orders from the sushi bar. Our waitress informed us that the 3rd order is on its way. We finished our soups and started on our incomplete sushi order. One of which was the tuna roll. WORSE TUNA ROLL EVER! The wrap was separating from the rice and it was cut in the middle! It looked like it was made by an amateur not a sushi chef. In Japan to become a sushi chef requires years of school and training. Here their sushi chef was a very nice Mexican man and when I talked to him, he said he had no training in Sushi before working there.
Anyways, we eat the so called rolls and sit waiting for the rest of our food to arrive. and we sit, and we sit, and we sit. Our waitress zooms past our table several times w/o even stopping to ask us if we need anything or to inform us what is going on with our order. Finally I got tired of this sub par treatment and flag down a random employee and asked them to tell the manager I want to see him. Meanwhile our waitress honors us by stopping and telling us our last order of sushi should come out shortly. We told her we do not want it anymore and again to please tell the manager we want to see him. It took the manager a good 5 minutes to show up!! When he finally does, he asks us what is going on, we explained the bad level of service we recieved, he did NOT apologize! and claimed the computer screwed up and the order was placed in late. When asked how come no one ever told us about this, he had no answer. Instead he just said well it is ready now if we want it. We said no thanks. CONCLUSION: not recommended.

Pros: Nothing that ouweighs the con

Cons: bad service, very bad sushi. Not a good place for a true sushi fan

Consistantly Great Food. Charley is a fabulous waitress! She makes you feel right at home! Highly Recommened for quality and a good price with service you can't find anywhere else in Austin!

If you go make sure you order the Spicy Susan (it's not on the menu, but you won't regret it). Always delicious. Also the Spicy Carlos and a few other good rolls lurk off of the menu and are worth trying. Everything here is always fresh and good. Unfortunately it seems that the price of some of the specialty rolls are going up (eg - Spicy Susan), but still one of my favorite sushi places in Austin. Highly recommend!

We chose this place because of the positive reviews hear on CitySearch and three of us had dinner there last week. The salad, Miso soup, Sushi, Shimp Tempura, and Vegatable Tempura were all great and we would return if that was all we wanted to eat but the Salmon Teriyaki, Chicken Teriyaki and the rice were all overcooked. I don't remember every getting dry, crusty rice in an Asian Restaurant before. I like it moist and sticky which I think is the way it's supposed to be served. We brought most of the Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken Teriyaki home and tried them again the next day after some gentle warming. Pass!

Great sushi and other Asian food. Many say this is the best in Austin. Great staff and decor. Ask for John O who knows the menu well and he'll help you find those special sushi rolls that will make your meal an experience you won't soon forget.

John, Gary, Charley, Angel and all the other amazing staffers at this place really add to the already great value of the food. This is a regular girls night spot for me and my friends, and the perfect place to start out a night on the town. Ask for the off menu specials and trust that every time you return, you will continue to be impressed. I'm really looking forward to their new downtown location on 2nd street to open. Enjoy!

Having moved from California, my husband and I have become used to eating great sushi . Sushi Sake offers fresh fish and a pleasant atmosphere. I wasn't sure what to expect since it is located in a shopping center. The moment we walked in, I was happily surprised to find a truly lovely restaurant.

We ordered a couple of the lunch specials (chicken teriyaki for my son - which was delicious by the way) and also the Lunch special E which was three generously portioned handrolls (salmon skin, Ebi, and spicy tuna). Each special came with Miso soup. Of course, we also ordered various pieces of sushi, which were also generously portioned. You can tell alot about a restaurant by their uni - I was very impressed. We spent about $40, which is pricy for lunch but about average for a sushi dinner (without drinks) for us.

We have tried many many sushi places in Austin, and nothing can even hold a torch to Sushi Sake. The fish is amazing, and fresh. They have unique rolls and different specials every day. Service is excellent and the ambiance is great as well. Very professional staff. It is very reasonably priced for the quality!! If you find a place that can beat this, please let me know!!!

The quality of Sushi is nice. I tried a couple of different types of Sushi. Their Futomaki is very fresh and thier Miso soup is great. However, I was very disappointed with their Teriyaki sauce. I know what Teriyaki sauce should taste like. I thought it was an insult that they call it "Teriyaki." Frankly speaking, it is a far cry from from "Teriyaki" sauce. (They also use honey to sweeten the sauce instead of using sugar?) Their Teriyaki sauce tastes like Sallisbury steak sauce. Sorry, it's true. "Yakitori" was also a big disappointment since they use the same Teriyaki sauce. As for "Tempura," it's pretty good. It's very light and crispy. Also, I like the fact that they give you some "grated Daikon radish" to mix with Tempura dipping sauce like the way they do in Japan. I'm interested in trying some other menu items.

It may not compare to Musashino but I consider Sushi Sake to be somewhat authentic and pretty cheap for what you get. The service is pretty good - I've been here a handful of times and I've never had a problem.

This is the ONLY place to eat sushi in north Austin. The Scorpion hand roll and Yokohama roll are my favorites, but you really can't go wrong no matter what you order. It's just fresh fish and in great combinations. Sitting at the sushi bar is a pleasure with the attentive, not over-attentive, chefs.

I just moved to Austin a few weeks ago and wanted a good reasonably priced sushi place...this is it! the staff was so welcoming and the food was great! i highly recommend the california roll(masago), kani, and edemame!!!!!! so good i was done with the edamame before i got home! my only complain would be that there was a light fishy smell when you walk in , but you get past that!

Two criteria must be met to prepare perfect sushi:
1) ultra fresh fish, and
2) perfect rice
In 90% of the Austin sushi restaurants I have visited, the quality of fish was fresh and comparable. However, only one had the perfect combination of rice wine and rice vinegar in the sushi rice. There is no vinegar flavor, nor is there a smell to the sushi rice that taints the natural flavor of the fish. The background music (singer/standard) is nice, but not too loud, and the restaurant is astheticly pleasing, both in atmosphere and in food presentation. I highly recommend this restaurant for both those seeking to dine in or carry out.

I went to Sushi Sake on Mother's Day around 3pm with a friend. It was not busy at all. After being seated, we watched as 3 different waiters walked past us. Not a single waiter came by to greet us. We sat in disbelief for 17 minutes. When we realized that people that got sat after us got served, we got up and left. As we were leaving, we told the hostess that we never got served. She seemed to not care at all. We decided to complain to the management and call. The "manager" that spoke to us didn't seem to care that we didn't even have a waiter come up to us. I will NEVER go back again.

I really liked Sushi Sake. I'm planing on going back for my birthday. I suppose their /feature/ food would be sushi, bu thier miso soup and mixed tempura are also very good. I really enjoyed the pickles that came with the Binto(?) box lunch special. I'm underaged, so i'm not sure how good their sake is, but the ambiance and food i've experienced there had been pleasant. I'm more of ther hermit/quite type myself, so the quiet, almost romantic feel of the place was very nice.

Yessiree! This is a really great restaurant. Granted, it doesn't match the sushi in Osaka and Kyoto, but it is quite reminiscent. Great ambience, great service, GREAT sushi. It's simply as good as you are likely to get in Austin. Stay away from UMI. Wow, is it the antithesis of Sushi Sake...Oh, and while at Sushi Sake, be sure to try the Asahi Super Dry. Simply the best blonde beer on the planet! The Tiger Eye is fabulous, and the house dressing (creamy ginger) is TOP notch!

My boyfriend and I go to Sushi Sake almost once a week. Everybody that works there befriend us. For better sushi, keep this few tips in mind:

1. Fresh Fishes get delivered every Tue and Thur. Thur selection is usually better.
2. Basic rolls like California roll are not made by Sushi Chefs. They are either pre-made or by people from the kitchen.
3. Most of the sushi chefs are not well trained. I can only think of 5 that can pass my standard. They usually work Thr, Fri, and Sat.
4. Sushi Bar is your best bet.

Hope you can enjoy Sushi Sake!
