The ambience, the sizzling fajitas and Dallas West End people-watching patio are just the starters of the attraction to RJ Mexican Cuisine. Upscale and romantic, a true Mexican Restaurant with wooden fixtures from a real hacienda. Rich huge palm trees and big open windows offer spectacular views of downtown skyscrapers and West End street life. The aroma of hot plates of mouthwatering Mexican cuisine welcome you upon entering this Mexican Restaurant. The extensive menu opens it's window to a true Tex-Mex culinary experience. D magazine said the costillo del campo is "one of the best treatments of short rib we've ever tasted, tender and rich and juicy to the bone." The full bar serves margaritas and features over 50 types of tequilas. Catering, lunch specials, party packages and a special brunch menu all await you right here at this Mexican Restaurant in the Dallas' West End.

In Short
RJ's sophisticated presentation departs from kitschy Tex-Mex decor. Beige tiled floors, exposed wooden beams, and vibrant orange walls exude relaxed elegance. Food is served on simple black stoneware. Authentic Mexican appetizers such as the seviche and gorditas are served fresh and spicy. Entrees include old standards like beef enchiladas. The more adventurous diner should try the chef's specials, such as the grilled quail in peanut mole sauce flavored with ancho chili and ground cinnamon.

Key Points

  • #1 Mexican Catering
  • Dallas Mexican Cuisine
  • Fantastic Sizzling Fajitas

HORRIFIC!!!

by fefehs81

My boyfriend and I ordered the queso appetizer, the chef had decorated the dish, which had a line of ground beef in the middle. There was so much grease run off from the beef it pooled on top of the queso. My boyfriend had ordered the beef tacos and I ordered the chimichanga. My boyfriend didn't even take a bite when they came to the table. There was again so much grease run off from the beef that it had soaked through the bottom of the tacos and pooled on the plate. The chimicanga was dry and slightly burnt. When my boyfriend sent back the tacos, the manager just removed the price of the tacos from the ticket, he did nothing else. Did not offer to take a percentage off the ticket or compensate us in any way. One of the worst dining experiences I have Ever had. I DO NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone. The ONLY reason it got one star is because I had to rate it to publish this.

Pros: Prompt

Cons: Food

Mediocre cuisine

by postmodernhombre

This wasn't the worst Mexican food I've ever had, but it was close. The were some tasy things, the cumin-spiced rice and the spicy salsa being two of them, but many of the entrees we had were lacking. The ribs tasted as if they had been boiled, the ceviche had a heavy ketchup base that was off putting, the rellenos were a little raw. In general, no one at our table of ten walked away vowing to return. (They were also out of a brand of tequila on their admittedly extensive menu.) Pleasant and attentive wait staff, charming decor and dining outdoors offset forgettable food.

Pros: Attentive service, nice decor, outdoor dining

Cons: Disapointing food

Excellent Mexican Food... plus great seafood and steaks. Would rate #1 restaurant.

by FelixFox

It is our unbelievable eating experience at RJ Mexican Cuisine. This is our first visit at Dallas downtown; we are from Florida visiting on business trip and found this locally owned restaurant in downtown Dallas. We go out occasionally at restaurants but this is our best ever experienced at RJ Mexican Cuisine. We went to RJ on Nov 2nd 2008, atmosphere at RJ was so excellent, there entree prices were so low, actually we thought it would be a very high price food restaurant., but it wasn?t so.. Food server was so nice and very attentive, our food arrived shortly and we had an excellent time there. We never thought this place would be as good as we ever thought it would be? we would rate this restaurant number one in all aspects??

Pros: Excellent atmosphere, great food and servers

Cons: None

Great Attitude!

by princess1980

I highly recommend anyone to go to Rj Mexican Cuisine! Their so kind and can take care of you the way it should be. I went a couple of days ago the service was excilent. The manager was so kind to make sure that everthing was going good and that we were getting the attention we need. I also remember seeing large groups of ladies coming in and all the staff taking good care of them. Everyone seem to be enjoying their dinner. The food was great and the decor was pretty!

Pros: Great service

Cons: none!

Best Mexican Cuisine!

by pinklady0315

Rj Mexican Cuisine was a wonderful experience for me and my family! From the moment i walked in the door they made me feel as if they were there just to treat me. As i looked around i noticed that they treated everyone with the same kindness. Our server was far the most sweetest girl and very knowledgable about the menu. Ididn't even have to ask for a refil! She was very quick and never once showed any sing of negitive attitude!! Our dinner was excellent. The steak was drepared just like my husband likes it! The desert was incredible! They even have a small area for big parties! As it looked everyone was enjoying themselves and as the time passed i didn't see any complaints being made or any costumers not happy with what they were getting! It was so wonderful and my kids loved it! I surely recommend for everyone to come and check out the place!!

Pros: Great Dinning!!!!

Never coming back here

by tonyabuz

This was by far one of the worse restaurants I have ever been. The wait staff was slow and not very knowledgeable or helpful. One of the kids in our party of 6 ordered french fries. It took 10 minutes to get ketchup and it was spoiled and soured. The bathrooms were disgusting, smelly and gross. Even the sink was stopped up and about to overflow with water. It took 15 minutes for a manager to come talk to me. The General Manager Jay Khan wasn?t concerned or apologetic. He even rolled his eyes when I was express health concerns about the spoiled ketchup. NEVER COMING BACK!!! Stay away from this place, there are plenty of better places to spend your money.

Pros: none

Cons: beware

Never coming back!

by trejrl

The service is pathetic. The waiter had two other tables besides mine and I could never get his attention. He was the great houdini - disappearing all the time. I needed my drink refilled and didn't receive it until the meal was over. I couldn't wait to get out. The bathrooms were dirty and smelly too!

Great authentic Mexican food.

by marylynch

Great authentic mexican food. Loved the atmosphere and the Patio is beautiful with a great view of the old cobblestone street. We had wonderful service and a great experience. We always look for good mexican food when we come to Dallas, and we will for sure be back again. Loved the Chile Rellenos.
Convenient Valet parking right across the street. It was not there last time we were in town, its an added bonus. See you soon.

Good food. Bad service.

by jnorris9

Great restaurant, but the service does not match the food. Our server greeted us by saying, "I'm __ and I'm really busy". Not a good start. Didn't bring the guacamole we ordered, brought 3 tortillas for 2 people sharing fajitas. Walked by our table 4 times (carrying a large empty tray) without clearing our used dishes. Dropped our check and picked up 2 dishes. We would have ordered a dessert as we were celebrating a birthday, but wasn't offered. Horrible service. Good food.

Pros: Food, atmosphere

Cons: Service, music

Excellent service!

by wendyyork

Loved the food the service and the pricing was very fair considering we are in the West End. I loved the suiza! Everything looked good though, so I don't think you can go wrong. Say hi to the Host for me. He was quite charming :) I too will be back!

Pros: Great food and service!

Cons: bring quarters for parking :) It only costs 50 cents tho.

I will be back! Loved the patio as well!

by wolfevideo

I loved the corner booth they put my party in. We had 6 people for a business lunch and it was like having our own conference room with a personal waiter! The salsa was out of this world and the standard of Mexican food I knew was just raised up a notch. All in all an excellent experience! The ambiance was so unexpected for the west end, very elegant in a Nuevo kind of way. If you like to people watch sit on their patio. Great place to spend an evening or afternoon.

Pros: booths and patio... oh and I liked the food too :)

Cons: none

Will NOT be going back

by moeshell

Rj's did not impress anyone in our group of ten. The decor was nice, and that is about all they had going for them. I had made reservations 3 days before and arrived on time, the hostess sat us, but we didn't see a waiter until 15 minutes later. Are drinks didn't arrive for another 10 minutes. The food came out after an hour of being at the restaurant. The chicken enchiladas were average, and the steak overcoooked.

Pros: Location, decor

Cons: paid parking, slow service

Tourist trap, horrible everything

by samanthawalter

I would not go here again ever! The waiter was unknowledgable and tried to make up for it in cheeziness. The margaritas tasted like sugar syrup. And the food very unimpressive while overpriced for the place. That is when they finally got the order right after the third try. At this point our waiter dissapeared, the manager tried to have us over pay and finally corrected it after arguing with me about it. Then I showed him the correct pricing on the menu. After finally leaving we all had an upset stomach. I will say the decor is nice, but that would not be a reason for going to a resturant!

Pros: Decor

Cons: Service, Food, and Pricing

Mexican with a twist

by tripod

If you are looking for something completely different (or as the waiters call it)... a "dining experience", then this restuarnt is worth checking into. A fine collection of "traditional mexican" food, but they go so much further. The menu included: Seafood, Steaks, Ribs (which i tried the "Costilla del Campo" and loved it!), Quail, and a great shrimp ceviche!!!

The location is unbeatable, in the heart of the west end! And the indoor atmosphere (included an incredibly large patio) was fantastic. I will be going again.

Pros: Patio, Full Bar, Great lunch deals

Cons: paid parking
