Ratings_icons Fralo's Art of Pizza is Fantastic!

Leesa T.

This was my first visit to Fralo's. We traveled from 281/1604 not sure what to expect but it was well worth the trip. The restaurant is wonderfully family oriented. My eight year old son enjoyed socializing with other kids around the campfire, while my husband and I enjoyed some adult time. We ordered a simple pizza, Cured Prosciutto, black olives, mushroom and cheese. The pizza was cooked to perfection w/ very lien Prosciutto, a delicious sauce, and the crust was quite tasty. We had the Pigtails as a starter. The Serrano ham was perfectly salted and complemented the Bufala Mozzarella. Our waitress Melanie was delightful. The price is affordable - we spent $48.15 with tip for three with dessert. The only other pizza that I can say that I enjoyed as much was at Dough's. I highly recommend Fralo's and can't wait to return.

I went looking to fralo's as i have before but recently they put up a huge tent covering all the outside seating. Inside the tent are heaters and the bands are still able to set up and play. The tent does help with the cold air so if you are thinking it's too cold to go to that great pizza place just go on in. It is done up nice with lights inside. I can't wait to go back the food was great as always as well as the service!

We go to Fralo's whenever we visit San Antonio and we go in the evening. The pizza was hands down, THE best pizza I've ever eaten! And where else can you "build" your own lasagna! Our waitstaff was very attentive and the owners even stopped by to shoot the breeze! The outdoor dining under the ancient oaks was very relaxing and so out of the ordinary. Now, if you want fast pizza served within four walls, just stop by your corner pizza joint, but if you want to experience the very best of San Antonio, you've got to go to Fralo's.

Pros: top notch Italian food, atmosphere and music

Cons: It's 200 miles from Corpus!

I have lived in San Antonio for over 4 years and have not found a place to satisfy my self described pizza snobbery. Growing up near New Haven Ct I have been accustomed to gourmet pizza. The ingredients are A+ the service was great, the owner even talked to us for a few just before leaving for a catering gig. My first bite I knew I was in for a treat. The only thing missing was a foxon park birch beer. My husband enjoyed his calzone- he said it wasn't the best but it ranked up there. So if you like small, cozy, intimate atmosphere's you should really try this place

Pros: New Haven style pizza in San Antonio

Cons: No Birch Beer, No liquor license

The first time my family and I visited there was not seating available inside. (there are very few tables inside) There were tents outside but it was way too cold even with the heaters they provided. So we left.

My wife and I tried again a few months ago. Waitstaff was not particular friendly, the pizza was ok but not what I was expecting. The wait time was not bad.

We will not be back anytime soon. The price did not match the value.

Pros: Outside of SA

Cons: Seating, price

We had a great experience and loved the music. The pizza was great and we were even able to bring our dog along so that was a plus!!! We had great service our server was attentive and friendly. I was a little disappointed that we had to pay a corking fee after just having bought our bottle of wine. Overall great food loved the Fralos sampler!!!!

Pros: Friendly atmosphere

Cons: BYOB fees

My family and I are very involved in the restaurant business and pride ourselves in creating quality food. We make pizza at home once a week. It has been difficult for us to find pizza at a restaurant that equals to the quality as ours. After reading alot of reviews we decided to try Fralo's. I wasn't concerned about the long wait time for the pizza because at least I was forewarned. However I expect good service when I visit restaurants which I did not receive. We were not greeted when we came in the door and we had no idea if we were supposed to sit down or wait to be seated. After being passed 4 times by employees someone finally shouted over their shoulder that we could grab a table anywhere we liked. Then when we sat it took our "server" 15 min to say hi and that wasn't even to take our drink order. I was surprised that this girl was our server because I watched her walk by countless times never even addressing us. we were sitting right next to the front door and the bar so it wasn't difficult at all to actually just say "hi folks I will be right with you." Finally she greeted us and then came back a few minutes later with drinks. She tried to walk off without asking us if we had questions, or even if we wanted to order anything. I stopped and told her we were ready so she took the order. I have to say the pizza came out fairly quickly. It obviously has improved because we only waited 20 minutes. The pizza was tasty except the bacon was extremely undercooked. As a former chef myself and my husband as a restaurant manager, we both immediately were concerned. It barely had color and looked like it had only had a 3-4min cooktime total. This is not enough for a thick slice of bacon. Towards the end of the meal we stopped an employee to ask about the bacon cooking method, because our server never came back, not even to get us more drinks. He said they cooked in on the stove beofre putting it on the pizza. We showed him the bacon and he said, "oh is that not cooked." It was wiggly and extremely pale, disgusting!!! I have never seen a restaurant try and serve bacon cooked like that. We informed him it was and we couldn't even tear it because it was so undercooked. he just said oh again and walked away. Where was the manager? This was unacceptable. an hour and a half later our server finally appeared with the bill, still never refilling our waters or asking us how the food was. Needless to say this is one pizza place I will never return to and unfortunately have to let others know that it's probably not worth the waste of time. I really didn't want it to be anything like the other bad reviews I read but unfortunately it was right on. and sadly it was on a Tuesday night. Not a night were they can't handle dinner.

Pros: good pizza, raw bacon, and bad service, don't do it!!!!

Cons: BAD service, undercooked meat in the middle of my pizza

I visited the restaurant last night with a reunion group that kept growing from 14 to 20+. The staff was extremely accomodating as the group continued to grow, adding tables and seats as needed despite it being one of the busiest nights I've seen there. For many in our group, it was their first experience at Fralo's and everyone loved their meals, especially with so many pizza choices. The sampler was a huge favorite! Everyone had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the food, music and having such a great place to reunite! We will be back soon!

I've been to fralo's a couple of times and although it generally takes some time to get your food it has always been properly prepared and flavorful. Plus its nice to sit outside and enjoy yourself with friends and family in a non rushed atmosphere. Great food and friendly staff, great place to go for an unpretentious date. Will return soon.

Pros: great ambience and food

Ratings_icons A GREAT TIME!!!

girlatty

My family is not able to get together very often due to major distances between my two sisters, our parents, and me. While visiting my parents in Boerne, my sister suggested we try FRALO'S for pizza. What a good idea it turned out to be!!! Our server, Melanie, was prompt, polite and very obliging to our requests. The other girl helping her was also a credit to your business. Our wait for seating was short because we arrived early on Saturday (9/20/08) evening. The live musician was fun to listen to and did his best to honor my sister's request. Being from the Chicago area, Pizza here is considered an art form. Fralo's lived up to the raves my sister had given it. We had two salads and two pizzas. Everything was delicious, served hot when appropriate, and was worth the price. The atmosphere was relaxing and gave my family and me a chance to have a good time. Thank you for providing some great memories. Please acknowledge Melanie's great service. I rarely write a business but thought you would appreciate being told about our experience.

Ratings_icons Yuck!!

Schecid

We read the reviews and we thought it was good, we went there and first they took a loooong time to attend us, they just passed besides us and didn't pay us attention, finally some girl ask what we wnated and we order, they took 1 HOUR!! I am not exagerating, we wait there for one hour to get our food, which by the way wasn't that good, was very salty, very sensible about cheese and sauce, and they didn't cook it long enough, also very expensive!. Add to that they are just kids pretending have a restaurant, I don't have any idea how they got awesome reviews or even prizes unless they do them for themselves. YUCK! I WILL NEVER COME BACK!

Pros: NONE!!!!!!

Cons: ambience, parking, is not clean enough, food, SERVICE etc, etc

Ratings_icons Gourmet Pizza - Best in SA

cyphar

Having grown up in a very culinary family & being a chef myself, I am highly critical of every aspect of food service. Fralo's is a delight.

First, the ingredients are fresh & of the highest quality. They use the best of all the ingredients you are used to: tomatoes, basil, & garlic. However, they also artfully employ a host of ingredients less familiar to pizza such as lamb, artichoke hearts, pine nuts, & kalamatas. Even their cheeses push past the standard with pizzas featuring gorgonzola & smoked provolone (including mozzarella di bufala in their salads & starters!).

But Fralo's isn't using semi-exotic ingredients with any pretense. The menu is well thought out. The palette of flavors, whether familiar or exotic, marry fantasticaly with one another. You won't find that the tapenade or chicharron are on the menu solely to impress ''foodies," but because the end result is a balanced, delicious blend of clean tastes. For example, the heavier tastes of the alfredo & applewood smoked bacon on the Pozzi pizza are countered with light new potatoes & the crisp kick of cilantro. The harmony of the Nutty Chicken pizza's earthy, warm flavors offers half a dozen different tastes that leave none of them overwhelmed, even against garlic chicken. NOTE: If it's your first visit, get the Fralo's Sampler or you're doing yourself a disservice.

The only potential snag in my opinion is when the Texas weather doesn't cooperate. The seating is primarily outside at rustic wooden tables. Find the right day/time of day & you are in for a treat. The live music has been performed by pretty good musicians when I've gone. A pie at Fralo's will run you more than Pizza Hut etc. but you ARE getting what you pay for here.

After my first experience at Fralo's, I was stuffed. I had eaten far too much, but when I smelled more pizzas from the kitchen, they still smelled enticing. That is my ultimate test for great food. Maybe one day I'll get enough pizza to try some pasta. Bravo.

Pros: Ridiculously great pizza, fun environment, good live music

Cons: Outside seating in Texas means go a bit later in the evening.

Ratings_icons Best pizza, Best servers, Best everything

LauraKaples

I've been going to Fralos since they've been open and never have I left with a bad taste in my mouth. They've had servers come and go but the same friendly and outgoing attitudes are still there. Frank and Lori pride them self on great service and wonderful food. They'll take time out of a busy friday or saturday night to sit down and get to know their new customers and make them feel like they're part of the "family" that is Fralos. The live music is always a plus when visiting on the weekends, the food always exceeds our expectations, the smiling faces never get old and the outdoor dining allows for a relaxing experience. The five dollar corking fee is well worth it as they provie wine and frosted glasses, ice buckets, they even provide a wine key if you forget yours at home. Every time we come into Fralos we are always greeted by name and a positive attitude that makes us feel that we are the only ones in the restaurant! We've had just about every server wait on us and have loved all of them.

The food is just as wonderful, if not better than the amazing service that is given. Every pizza is made to order and are cooked on a stone oven so that when it reaches your table, it's cooked perfectly. Our favorite pasta is the Ravioli with the creamy sundried tomatoe pesto sauce (which was recommended by our server) and when my family can't decide on which pizza to get, we always know that the kitchen is willing to make a pizza that is half one pizza and half another.

Anytime we have family or friends come in from out of town there's never any questions to where will be taking them.

Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere

Cons: None

Ratings_icons Service is lacking

bames

We visited Fralos for a casual b-day dinner. We arrived at about 7:30 and there were plenty of empty tables outside. We sat ourselves & listened to music. This was the only part of our evening that was enjoyable. It took about 15 min. for a wait person to even greet us. At this point, I am told that I can drive down to Rudy's to get beer as they cannot sell it- I understand city ordinances. I arrive with a 6 pk in hand, hoping that the baked cherve we ordered before I left would be awaiting my arrival. We were halfway through our 6pk when my husband had to get up to ask our waitress for a bucket of ice for our now warm beer. Still waiting for our app.-she brought a bkt of ice which completely melted before we even got our pizza. We sat at our table with empty beer bottles, a bucket of water, no napkins, no flatware, and no waitress. As she delivered our friends meal, his roll fell on the ground, she looked at it and said "oh well." I guess she didn't feel the need to bring him another roll as she didn't return until we were finished eating. She never removed our dirty plates, empty bottles, etc. When she dropped off our check, I realized that she added 2 "corking" fees b/c we had brought 2 six packs to the table. Our waitress was nowhere in sight, so my husband got up and questioned the owner about the double corkage fee. I fully understand the reasoning behind a corkage fee, as I too am a restaurateur. I however, do not understand charging a "service fee" when no service, not even so much as clearing our table was preformed. When my husband asked about this, she sent another waitress out who with attitude, said, " So.... you have an issue with the corkage fee?" I felt that was extremely inappropriate... As an owner, I would have taken care of the customer myself, rather than sending out a teenager. We were expecting a nice relaxing dinner al fresco- but were disappointed. Good CONCEPT- Terrible service

Pros: Music

Cons: poor service, poor quality of food, poorly managed

Ratings_icons Great Pizza In San Antonio..No Way!!!

My wife and I love to eat out when the opportunity comes. Wheather it be chillis on a monday night or The Lodge for that special occasion! Last thursday we decided to go to Fralos. We were greated by our waitress who promptly opened our bottle of wine and started us off with a baked chevre. For our entree we ordered the Pozzi pizza. A very different pizza but extremely delishous! We ended our night with a whiskey pecan cheesecake which is baked locally in San Antonio. Overall our exprierence was outstanding! The owner was not shy and she greated us by saying hello! The staff was more than accomadating and the food was more than perfect! I have been to several pizza restraunts in San Antonio including Dough and Romes pizza but this restraunt trumps them all! If the food is not enough, then the "BYOB" and live music Thursday thru sunday will be! If you have your doubts about this restraunt all I have to say is, TRY IT!!!

Pros: Great Pizza

Ratings_icons Not Looking to Return

My significant other took me to Fralo's on a beautiful Sat. evening in early May. The very first thought I had was, "Pea gravel?" The gravel kept getting stuck in my shoes and I noticed other people having the same problem. People (servers included) also kick up gravel as they walk by your table, which got the legs of my pants dirty, and is a constant annoyance. The second problem here was the service. We made a reservation for 12 for 7pm and arrived 10 min. early. When we arrived the male host had no idea we were coming and the hostess looked around and then asked US "Well, do you see any tables close together?" Then she told the people behind us that they would HAVE to WAIT b/c we need to be seated first, sighed out loud, pointed us to a table and told us we would have to wait for the one next to it to it to open up. That table didn't open up until after we had ordered. Fortunately(?) the 5 person family we were waiting on came down with pink eye and couldn't make dinner so we squeezed into our table of 8 with 7 people and all of our food. The food ranged from good to bland, and none of us really understand the great reviews in the past. We ordered the sampler (interesting, but not fabulous), the tomato pesto("bland"), a margherita ("ok"), and 2 pastas ("ok"). Our waitress wasn't good or bad, but on a trip to the restroom another server ran into me (more gravel in my shoe) and apologized w/o so much as a glance in my direction. To top it all off the seating was heinous. I wanted to sit with some friends to have a good time and wooden benches with no backs, sides, or cushion are not my idea of a good time, especially when we're already a little cramped. I might give Fralo's another chance for lunch if I was already nearby and someone else really wanted to go, but I don't really "recommend" it, per se.

Pros: al fresco dining on a beautiful evening

Cons: ambience, parking, service, SEATING

I love the outside tables, but we waited one hour for pizza! The server was not around enough and ti was overpriced, our pizza was $25. I don't mind paying that much, but I should have GREAT service to go along with it.
I will not be back.

Pros: great outside tables

Cons: overpriced and poor service

My girlfriend and our younger siblings went to San Antonio for a quick vacation. I read great reviews for Fralo's on citysearch so we HAD to try it. It was out of our way but definitely worth the drive. We were seated outside but offered a table inside the tents since it was cold. The service was excellent. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We had the pigs in a blanket which were good. A Greek salad which was as good as salad can be. But the pizza was definitely the star of the show. We have really good pizza places in Houston but none like this. The crust was thin and cooked perfectly. I'm not sure if they use a wood oven but the crust had a very nice smoky flavor. The toppings on our Traditional tasted fresh and not over done. The cheese and sauce were perfectly proportioned. We also had a Lorfas's Five which was my personal favorite i love feta, gorgonzola and feta which this pizza had plenty of. Everything was just amazing. This place will forever be on our itinerary when we visit San Antonio.

Pros: Great food. Great scenery. Oh and its B.Y.O.B

Cons: None. Only I wish I didnt live 200 miles away!

All I can say is that I drive with my wife and kid every sunday from Sea World area. It is a long drive but totally worth it. I have been going for over 2 years. Yes there have been one or two times that things could have gone better but on the most part every week we get an excellent pizza and wonderful service. I got on here tonight to tell Mel congratulations becasue I just found out our favorite server is going to have a baby. Since we go so often we have gotten to know so many of the staff and love to keep up with each one of them. We really look forward to our Sunday evenings.

Pros: The staff is like family - congratulations Mel!

Cons: can't think of anything but Rain - puts a damper on the outside ambience

The food has always been good, but the service and attitude, alas, gone down hill. The staff frequently ignores customers or even worse, acts as if it's a privilege to eat at the restaurant. The last few times we've eaten there it's been like pulling teeth to get service. They also no longer appear to be very kid friendly. It's a shame, it started of as a great pizza place and we had been visiting since they opened.

Pros: Great Pizza

Cons: Horrible attitude and service

Ratings_icons Fralo's needs to concentrate more on the art of basic service and quality control, before trying to tackle the art of pizza.

tntwrx

My wife and I went to Fralo's Art of Pizza on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon for what we anticipated was going to be the best pizza we have had to date. Utter disappointment is all I can say. Wait staff was horrible (we never received a single refill), Pizza was tasteless, and way overcooked (Basil was charcoal as was the crust). Way overpriced, and service time was horrible. We sat near the kitchen so i could see and hear everything that was going on. I was stupified to see that (2) pies was burnt, but the wait staff still decided to serve them and just "see if the customers will take it". I mean come on...suck it up and take some pride in the food you serve. I would never send out something that was below my standards and just hope my customers will just let it pass. We did receive on the house some breadsticks, which by the way, were sitting for at least 15 minutes, cold, and just drenched in butter or olive oil. And finally to add insult on to injury the bill came which took us another 10 minutes before the waitress decided to grace us with her presence. I could understand some of the delay if they were on a wait but there was maybe 10 tables (all of which her waiting for at least an hour) for 2 waitresses. Maybe Fralo's needs to concentrate more on the art of basic service and quality control, before trying to tackle the art of pizza.

Pros: Very nice setting

Cons: The food and service

Honestly, if you haven't been there you need to go. It is so charming. You can get the feeling your away from the city and yet your only 3 minutes from 1604. I love to go and visit with the people around us - we have even shared a table with another couple when they were busy. You can take your own bottle of wine and i think they have live music every night. I would recommend you try the ravioli with some kind of sundried tomato sauce - and the little asparagus wraps. We had genna last time and she made sure we had a great table in the shade since we went a little earlier then usual. I understand this is a true mom and pop restaurant. And most of their staff is in college so you kind of feel like your helping your kids. Just go out there. We drive 27 miles to get there.

Ratings_icons Awesome Pizza, Great Atmosphere

amcast

Love the Pizza. Not only is it great tasting, but it's one of the places where you can get something different than most pizzas out there. You can reallly taste the fresh ingredients. The desserts are also great. Although they don't sell liquor, not by choice from what I hear, it's good to know you can bring a good bottle of wine to enjoy with your meal. The atmosphere is truly enjoyable. The country italian decor gives it a sophisticated feel while at the same time maintaining a friendly family environment. Have been enjoying it since they opened and continue to recommend it to all my friends.

Pros: Lots of patio space for large parties or if needed for celebrations.

Cons: Only con is that when the place is packed you may not be able to find a seat indoors. But Patio is nice when wheather is nice.
