This restaurant would shine in any major city in the world for its food / service / atmosphere and the people who run it. Valter the proprietor is the most gracious host / owner there is. The food here is beyond words. The perfect place

I have eaten here over a dozen times - with parties from two people to twenty.

Consistently a great experience and always made to feel welcome.

For SLC, the prices are sporty so if you are cheap, you may want to eat at Macaroni Grill.

Pros: Food, service

Cons: Close proximity between tables, can be noisy

I was put on hold twice without being asked if it was OK. We were seated at a terrible table. Tables near aisles and noisy areas should be used for larger parties; some consideration should be shown for parties of two. Our server was so uptight I wanted to give him a valium. Staff standing around amongst the tables is very annoying. Worst of all was being asked twice by a manager if the food and the service were OK. He made it sound as if he was expecting a problem. We watched the owner flit from "VIP" to "VIP" while ignoring the rest of his guests. It made us feel really loved.
Aside from all of this the food was excellent.

I've dined here a few times, and every time I am more impressed. This restaurant not only tastes like authentic Italian food it FEELS like authentic Italian food. Lots of energy, lots of courses, a different menu all the time, and the owner/chef waltzing amongst the tables giving loud praises, hugs, and lavishing authentic hot chocolate on guests that he seems to recognize.

Discovered this restaurant by internet search. What a gem! Looked it up on Zagat's and the ratings were superb! You need a reservation especially if there is a convention in town. This restaurant has an open kitchen that busily but artfully prepares exquisite meals. The menu is extensive and is sure to please the most discriminating palate. Owner Valter is often greeting customers, not only the regulars but newcomers such as myself. The attention by everyone from the hostess to the wait staff to the bussers was exceptional! I was so pleased that I wanted to return the following night, and was personally escorted by Valter to the hostess to make the reservation! If you enjoy wine, Valter has his own selection brought in from Italy that is wonderful, not to mention other extensive selections. This establishment is well deserving of the high ratings and I would highly recommend it as a must for those visiting and/ or for those who are looking for an exceptional dining experience

This place is consistently great. The food is prepared to perfection and the service is very good. It is loud, not very romantic but a great place to go with friends to celebrate. Salt Lake City is unfortunately not known for its eateries, but this place would survive in any city and would compete well in San Francisco or NYC.

Pros: Incredible Food

Cons: Long time to wait

The only positive I can give is that they kept my water glass filled.
Pretty decor true. Food was good, yes, but not great, and especially not at the price you are paying for it. Small portions as well.
This is the kind of place that easily impresses people that are wowed by a noisy chaotic atmosphere and snooty toffs.
They screwed up our reservation, sat us right next to the kitchen as punishment for their mistake, and screwed up our special dessert order that we requested days before, without apology.
We were very, very unhappy when we left, and felt sorry for the people waiting to get in.

I called a week ahead for reservations. Asked if they were able to make a birthday cake for us. They said yes, the bakery next door would do that. We knew things weren't starting well when they had written down 13 instead of 3 for the reservation. They were not happy to tear apart the tables. We were given a table in the busiest area in front of the kitchen. Well, it was noisy, extremely hot, the food was so-so (worst Caesar salad ever!) and over priced. We were greeted with blank stares when they asked if we wanted dessert and we asked for our cake. 30 minutes and a few "we're getting the cake ready" later we were served 3 slices of the menu cake with no explanation!!! Had we known we weren't getting "our" cake we would have left without dessert. Still no apologies or explanations, but lots of waiters and the owner running around attending "important" customers. Obviously you need to know the owner to be treated decently. It would have been nice if some kind of customer service was apparent. A simple "We are so sorry about the mix-up but we don't have your cake. Would you care to order from the dessert menu for complimentary desserts?" A good restaurant would have been up front about things instead of trying to cover up an obvious mistake. We are never going back and will tell everyone we know NOT to waste their time and money, but to go to Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano at the Gateway instead. Now THIS is an elegant restaurant with excellent food, a great staff, and believe it or not you can have a conversation without shouting or dying of heat stroke.

I recently moved from NYC to Salt Lake and I was invited to partake in a sampling at Cucina Toscana and was blown away from the moment I stepped in the door. The restaurant is somewhat of a "hole in the wall" restaurant and you are surrounded by beautiful decor, plants and accommodating staff. Justin, the manager was very pleasant and catered to our every need and consistently checked in to see how everything was. I have never seen such service. We ordered the Caesar salad, which is prepared at your table with tons of fresh ingredients. I was at first weary about the anchovies, but the waiter assured me I would love it and I wouldn't be able to even taste any fish. He was right! There was no fish after taste and everything blended perfectly. Next was their pasta sampling which was an experience in it's own. The handmade ravioli was to die for and the gnocchi in tomato sauce was a delight. Both pastas were perfectly matched with tasty sauces that complimented them. Next was the main dish - chicken saltimbocca. Never have so many ingredients tasted so good. The chicken was prepared perfectly and the side potatoes were delicous with the sauce. The sauce was different in that it had a lemon after taste. I hate lemon, but enjoyed this explosion of flavor in my mouth. To end the meal we had fresh made tiramisu. It was like eating air, it was so rich and fluffy. I never have liked Tiramisu, but after eating theirs, I wanted more! I don't drink coffee, but my husband said it was the best he's ever had.
Go to Cucina Toscana, you will love the environment and enjoy the food. I have told everyone at work, home and across the states about my experience and I hope you will go their too. Let's keep this restaurant alive forever so we may experience NYC food in the heart of Utah!

I went to Cucina Toscana as part of a group of six. Our reservation was for 8:00pm, but they kept us waiting until 9:00 before seating us. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had a bar where we could sit, but we had to stand in the crowded lobby (obviously we weren't the only ones kept waiting) by the front door when it was snowing outside. After about 45 minutes they brought us some mineral water and a plate of bruschetta (which comes free on the table), but it didn't really make up for the wait. We'd been skiing during the day and were starving by the time we did get seated. The menu is strange too: the dishes are scattered all over the place. There were about six different versions of veal scallopini, each in a separate part of the menu. It makes me think the disorganization isn't just limited to the reservations. I don't know how this place wins awards for being the best restaurant in SLC.

My fiance unfortunately took me here for my thirtieth birthday. Firstly the hostess tried to imply that we didn't have a reservation and we had to point out that our name was in the reservation book in front of her. Then we had to wait 35 minutes after the time of our reservation to get seated without an apology. The closest we got was "We're very busy tonight". While the server, Ty, was nice enough, we felt rushed, he seemed to be running back and forth between too many tables and he did not follow up when we made less than stellar remarks about the food. My starter -- a salad with tuna, scallops and octopus -- lacked the octopus and was so sour that it was difficult to eat. It was an interesting dish, but not a very successful one. My main dish was a fettuccine with a porcini and meat sauce, and while the hand made fettuccine was excellent, I've had better sauces at chain restaurants. The sauce was excessively watery and tasteless. Overall, this restaurant was too noisy to talk and too frenetic too enjoy one's meal.

I went to Cucina Toscana several years ago and had a wonderful dining experience, wow, has that changed. We went with a dear friend from out of town and raved about the food only to be greeted with a 20 minute wait even though we had reservations, service that was fairly unattentive, cold food and the worst of all, we dessert. We requested a dessert menu - the server said that they don't have a dessert menu but recited our available dessert options from memory. Thinking that perhaps we might get the quality we expected, we ordered cannoli, pistachio gelato and the evening special which was a chocolate mousse cake. The mousse cake was nothing more than a lava cake with some vanilla ice cream, the pistachio gelato was something that tasted more like peanut butter than pistachio and the one cannoli was average at best. Then came the ticket - they charged $11.50 for one cannoli, $10.50 for one scoop of gelato and $15.50 for a microwaved lava cake! We could not believe it. No wonder they don't offer you a dessert menu - no one would order if they knew the price! I have lived in LA and Chicago and I have been to some of the top restaurants both of those cities have to offer including Charlie Trotters and I have never been charged $15.50 for a dessert of any kind, let alone one that I could have made in my kitchen. Needless to say, I won't ever go back to Cucina Toscana - SLC, look for a better place to find authentic Italian food.

What started as a bad experience turned out to be one of the most amazing dining experiences of my life. My boyfriend and I made a reservation for my birthday and arrived promptly only to be kept waiting for over a half an hour. We alerted the hostess that we would like to cancel our reservation and turned to leave. Upon getting to our car in the parking lot, the manager of the restaurant ran out after us adamant about us staying and enjoying our night - going as far as to say that he wanted to pay for our meal, he didn't want anyone to leave unhappy. We of course agreed to the kind gesture and went back inside. The events that pursued were nothing short of remarkable. He treated us to a 4 course meal of the most amazing dishes either of us has had in Utah. Cucina Toscana took what could have been a very bad experience and went above and beyond what anyone could have asked. We will definitely be going back!

I luckily found this place 2 years ago and I can't get enough! It is by far the best italian restaurant in town! There's always tons of cool people there and it's got amazing atmosphere! The owners are so charismatic and passionate about what they do ...it makes you feel like you are eating at their house (just you get a big bill at the end!!...but it's worth it!) If you haven't been you should call and make a reservation!

I've chose Cucina Toscana as our favorite Italian restaurant in Salt Lake City. They are the BEST in UTAH, actually they are better than any Italian restaurant I've tried in San Francisco or New York. When we try a new Italian restaurant we always try a salad, apps, lasagna and a special. This is by far the best Lasagna I've tried - in America. The Salmon Mostarda is awesome ( but the last time I ordered it, the Salmon was drowning in the creamy sauce -but usually it's just right.)

The service is always very good. I usually with go with a group of six or more and we always sit in the new back area or in one of the private rooms. It's not crowded like the front area near the kitchen. You may have trouble with parking on Jazz game nights since it's so close to the Arena.

My only complaint about this restaurant is the prices. Recently, some of our favorite dishes have gone up in price quiet a bit. Which means we'll probably visit less often. The Lasagna dish is around $22 now....Salads went up a few dollars too. We used to spend about $60 for two but this last time it was over $80.

But if you are looking for good authentic Italian food - this is the place in Utah. Nothing else can compare.

I had to host a business meeting for 26 people coming from out of town. The restaurant has a wonderful private area for such an event. We got our private chef cooking from us through a dedicated kitchen in that area and it also had a bar area. The service was excellent as our wine glasses were continuosly filled. We had the 4 course meal and the food was outstanding. Everyone was raving about how tastey the various courses were. The owner came at first to great us and made sure that we are taken care of.

I highly recommed the restautrant.

Undoubtedly the best Italian food that Salt Lake has to offer, eating at Cucina Toscana was nothing short of fantastic. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff greet you with a professional but warm welcome. Our waiter was phenomenal, choosing all of our food for us, and hardly knowing us. For appetizers he chose a proscuitto with melon (amazing), a cooked spinach dish and two other great dishes. The next course was the homemade ravioli, which was to die for. The main courses we had were a salmon dish with spinach and tomato, a tilapia dish, and two other meat dishes. Already entirely impressed and stuffed, our waiter brought our two desserts, a peach tiramisu and chocolate lava cake (a chocolate lovers delight). During the meal the waiter was attentive to our requests and very prompt in serving us. The owner even came and asked how our meal was, which is a rare occurrence in most restaurants. Needless to say, we were pleasantly stuffed and smiling when we left. The only downside to the meal was the cost, it is a bit pricey, but well worth it.

Utah has so few really charming authentic spots - this one is first rate. The service, food, and atmosphere are wonderful. The acoustics are a problem for quiet ones. One of the best in Utah - up there with Chez Betty and Metropolitan

From the moment you enter Cucina Toscana, you feel special. The owner personally greeted us at the door, thanking us for dining at his restaurant. From there, the host checked out coats, and led us to our table, covered in white linen.

Our server was very knowledgeable, friendly, and had some great suggestions. The menu was divided into two sections, one offering the chef's selections for that particular week, and the other listing the more permanent choices.

The food was amazing. We ordered the king crab, avocado, fennel starter, followed by entrees of duck, veal, and hand-made ravioli. It was delicious. To finish it off, we enjoyed a serving of coffee-flavored gelato.

It was a perfect evening.

My husband and I had reservations at Cucina Toscana for our Anniversary. When we arrived the restaurant was buzzing. When I gave the hostess our name, she didn't have it on her reservation list. She immediately spoke with her manager who seated us immediately. We were impressed!

Our waiter was very attentive and accomodating. The food was out of this world. I would reccommend this restaurant very highly. I am Italian on both sides of my family and I have to say their food truly hits the mark in every way! We may make Cucina Toscana our traditional Anniversary dinner.

Valter - what can I say but Valter, what an empressario. He is more like a conductor than a Maitre d'. He runs everyone ragged to deliver the best experience possible.
I don't know where is energy comes from - but if he could bottle it it would put Red Bull out of business. By the way the food is great and not at all like anywhere else in America.

I am from Portland, OR and didn't expect to get good Italian in SLC, but I loved the food at this restaurant. Everything we had was delicious, and compared to Portland it was very reasonably priced. I think this was the best Italian I've had (and I have had a lot!)
They have excellent homemade pasta and gnocchi, the asparagus appetizer was delicious, and I had the house Chicken which as really flavorful. The only downside was we were a bit too close to our neighbors.

The atmosphere and service at Toscana are fabulous. The food is marginal and overpriced. I do believe they have a private room for larger parties, but I have never eaten in there.

Cucina Toscan is the best in SLC. the service is top notch, the food is fantatstic, and the atmosphere is beatuiful.

The owner will greet you with a hug and will take care of anything you need. You will become his friend immedately. the waitstaff is very attentive and knowledgable about the food. They even mix salads and desserts at the table.

We had the best Halibut here we have ever had. Cooked to absolute perfection and very tasty. I have had some great fish in Boston, NYC and elsewhere and this was top notch. The Oso Bucco was very good as well. The appetizers are great, including the expansive (not expensive) Anti-Pasta bar, and the Bruschetta.

This place will be in the top 5 (if not #1) on city search in 2005.

My wife and I have been here three times and we absolutely love it! The atmosphere is great, the service is awesome, and the prices are reasonable. This is a good place for a rommantic date, although I would recommend to almost anyone, except children. Children would ruin the atmosphere of a place like this.

Fantastic place. Incredible food, service, ambiance. Wife and I loved this place. We went here for pre-theater night. Only a short 3 block walk from the Capital Theater. Prices are a good value too. I think this may be the best Italian Restaurant in downtown Salt Lake City. Entrance is from the chain-link fenced parking lot under the "tire city" sign.
