I have gone to Pagoda a couple of times and the service is always problematic, i.e. people telling me food would be ready at a certain time and when I got there telling me it would be ten more minutes. I used to go in to eat, but now I just carry out. Also, the portion sizes are not always consistent and not everything is always included, i.e. a side might be missing one time and then included another. I live close to the restaurant so if there is a problem I can easily go back. The reason I continue to go here is because their salmon is some of the best I've had...ever. I put up with the bad service because I think once in a blue moon their salmon is absolutely worth it.

Pagoda recently started serving very affordable sushi! I'm a full-time student and the menu is perfect for my price-range. Everything is freshly made and is on par with other sushi restaurants in this city. Their normal dinner menu comes in very large portions (very easy to share or keep me set for a couple days). They have done a great job mixing in new menu items with the traditional dishes they've made since Pagoda opened. No recipes' changed! They are open for take out, so dinner is quick, easy, and tastes great! The staff makes you feel welcome, just like family. I'd recommend this for any occasion: quick bite, date night, dinner party! Don't forget to try the gyoza!

The Pagoda is located just off South Temple in Salt Lake City, close to downtown and all the main attractions. The food is typically very good, although not quite as consistent as some other restaurants we frequent. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is enjoyable (it actually looks like a Pagoda). Would definitely recommend to friends.

If I could, I would give it 0 stars! My boyfriend and I moved to the avenues a year ago and we drive past this place all the time. We decided to to try it for a date night out, I wished we would have saved the money and had a date night

We tried Pagoda for the first time tonight. And, we'll be going back for more. The sushi was the BEST ANYWHERE. And, the atmosphere was comfortable and very beautiful. Love it!

What can I say. My wife and I felt pampered on our anniversary tonight. After hiking Ensign Peak to watch a magnificent sunset we stopped by for a late dinner.

The shrimp/vegetable tempura was light and crisp, the baha sunset sushi was delicious, and the mochi ice cream was just icing on the cake. We received excellent service from our waitress.

I'll definitely be heading back for some more tempura, sushi, dessert, and to try some more dishes..

I have read the previous reviews saying that the new Pagoda isn't the same restaurant as it used to be...and they're right. And that's why our family now eats there at least once a week instead of once every 4-5 years! We have lived in the Avenues for over 10 years. Prior to the addition of sushi to the menu, we ate there twice--each time with friends who suggested we meet there for dinner. The atmosphere was quaint and charming. I can see why people are nostalgic for the old days. But, honestly, we never cared for the old menu. We would take home half of our dinner food, put it in the fridge, and throw it away several days later.

However, for the last year, my kids have begged to go to Pagoda several times a week. They can't get enough! I fear they have developed a serious addiction to the cream cheese wontons, served with a delicious warm fruit sauce. With their amazing prices on Cali rolls, I don't fuss at my son if he orders three rolls. My other son is more adventurous and tends to order different rolls every time. My favorites are the Baja and the Mars. But never once, since we became fans of the new Pagoda, have we had to ask for a take-home box. My picky kids are like human vaccuums at Pagoda--if I order two rolls and can't finish them, one of my sons is sure to assist.

Yes, many people are change-averse. I get that. But if you are a sushi fan, Pagoda's sushi is the best in town. I can't speak for the rest of the menu since we never order anything but appetizers (soup and wontons), sushi, and the occasional dessert (either mochi or their delicious Bananas Foster--which my children aren't very good about sharing with me). However, I'm thrilled to have a neighborhood restaurant that my entire family can agree on. And that just wasn't a possibility when the old Pagoda menu was in place.

If you grew up loving the Pagdoda like generations of my family did, don't bother eating here. Since Fudge and Mary quit working in the resturant and have sadly passed on, the food has COMPLETELY CHANGED! No more butterfly shrimp, No more BBQ spareribs. No more Char Shu.. Very Sad.....

As being connoisseurs of all things holy, Server was prompt yet awkward however stimulating... with conversation. Presentation of sushi roll's were fairly poor, and less than desirable. Although, Baja Sunset Roll was immaculate and delectable, slightly orgasmic, and fresh. Maguro sashimi, was flaky and dried out, to that of a 90 year old woman's....... hands. It was overly fishy, like my ex girl friends....................Fish tank. We had a beer, which made this experience much more pleasant. Furthermore. We may be returning, because it's right around the corner from our house :)

I've been around eating at Japanese Places for over 25 years in the Salty City, and until just the other day did not like eating here. The previous older menu items were very disappointing to me, but obviously not everybody thought so, as this place has been in business for a very long time. The other day I was in the Cucina Deli in the Avenues and overheard somebody say that Pagoda had changed, and it was really good. I went there to check it out, and he was right. This place is definitely worth checking out. I rated them 4 stars for a variety of reasons, but I believe it won't be long before they become a 5 star shining star in SLC...

Pros: Very Good Sushi Bar, Beautiful Japanese Style Exterior

Cons: Old Menu Items

If you love (or even like) sushi, there is no better sushi in Salt Lake. A lot of the local specialty rolls were invented by Steve and Marlene who have recently moved to the Pagoda from Ginza. The Mars Roll, Firebreathing Dragon, and Baja Sunset...absolutely delicious. The Spicy Tuna Roll is out of this world.

Like the other locals who have posted reviews, my husbands family has been going to the Pagoda for 50+ years!! They have added a FANTASTIC Sushi Bar that is a very welcome change. It's great to have the option to enjoy their original menu items (the new owners are using the old recipes that were passed down to them) and to be able to order their delicious sushi rolls. We've been to Takashi, Tsunami, Happy Sumo, Naked Fish, Mizumis and many other sushi joints and Pagoda has done a fabulous job with their sushi menu.

You can enjoy the same friendly service, delicious food and great prices in an updated atmosphere in the company of new and old friends.

I have to say my family and I are absolutely devasted. From my grandparents to my parents to my siblings to my children - we have been enjoying this establishment for over 50 years. I understand the need to change to survive and don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Sushi fan. But don't minimize the value of consistent, quality food that has become part of this community. Great service and the sincere feeling of being welcomed not only into someone's business by their history and their family. I wish you well, because your roots and heritage are strong, but I will only have great memories of what at one point was an icon of this community. A very sad ex-patron,

Pagoda is a tradition for my family. We've gone there for over 50 years! It was just heaven until recently when they changed all the food. Now it's mediocre to bad. It's really a shame.

Absolutely horrible Chinese food, we ate about 1/4 of everything. The egg foo yung (supposedly their specialty) was dry and bland. Chow mein was unbearable to eat, it was like ramen noodles with celery thrown on top. Beef sukiyaki was ok, but a little too sweet. The tempura was good and that was the only thing we managed to finish.
Sushi is decent for the price.
Might come back for cheap sushi but will never again order from the menu.

Wow, it's hard to understand it but you know those shrimp that are WORLD FAMOUS? They stopped making them and started serving a chinese style get it anywhere shrimp. Sweet and Sour pork that came with the family dinners GONE>?? Changed to another style meat but the sauce is almost the same. The char shu is NOT OFFERED? The old family must be rolling in their graves! For years we have been regular customers, I realize that the sushi modernized the place but why switch out some of your most famous items? I I guess they wanted change. I will still go there as I do love the Egg fu yong, and the other non-changed items but perhaps not as much. Please If you are working at the pagoda please pass on that they made a mistake-- Dont change a successful good thing. also.. tried the sushi -- its just o.k. nothing to rave about.

Cons: New owners - family- changed some of menu to easier to make, typical sysco stuff.

Pagoda is my absolute favorite restaurant! It's simple, it's delicious, the staff is friendly and down to earth. The food is all fresh and prepared perfectly. By far my favorite tempura and egg foo young (and I don't like egg foo young anywhere). With the new sushi menu that is extremely well priced, they have topped all others. I have been eating sushi my entire life and I swear, this is GREAT sushi and they use great fish.
I have suggested several friends to try Pagoda and now they can't get enough... I haven't heard one bad review from anyone.

If you are going for your first time, I would suggest the Tempura, Chicken Tats, Gyoza, Shrimp Fried Rice and the Egg Foo Young. It's fantastic!!!!

I just ate at the Pagoda for the first time last night. My husband and I live in the Avenues and notice the building often. Against the advice of many family and friends, we decided we ought to give it a try. This was the biggest dining mistake of our lives. We ordered the family combination meal ($15/per person) so that we could try a variety of things. We also ordered a dish of teriyaki chicken. The chow mein was a glob of thick slop consisting mainly of celery and a bland white corn starch sauce slung on a bed of crunchy chow mein noodles. The egg foo yung was thick, tough, and bitter tasting. The barbecue ribs tasted like the meat had been frozen for months. The fried rice was gray in color and slick with oil. The teriyaki chicken appeared to be a piece of boiled, sliced chicken with teriyaki sauce poured on top. The expensive prices just added insult to injury. Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers. I am currently debating if they are suitable for our dog.

As a side note, I have never written a review for anything in my life and this was such a horrible experience, I feel it is my duty to write a review here so that I can warn others against this terrible excuse for food. I only wish City Search would allow a zero (or negative) star rating.

Pagoda has been a family owned restaurant running for 60 years. They are doing a great job adapting to it's location in the Avenues by adding Sushi to the menu. They have not changed how they prepare their classic Chinese/Japanese menu--huge portions and tradional recipes (chicken tats is my favorite). Now they have over 25 rolls of sushi that are more affordable than the sushi I have seen in the city, and tastes better! I think all the rolls are under $15 bucks and most were less than 10!! You can request sashimi or non-menu items easily. They have great gyoza and a lemon shrimp appetizer. I'm a full-time student and their sushi menu has made me a regular! I can take out easily, and they'll be open for lunch soon too. The staff always make you feel welcome and like a regular no matter if it was your first time there. I'd recommend this restaurant for any occasion--a date, quick take-out, a party or friends dinner out. Support local family-owned business!

I grew up in Salt Lake and moved to California in '85. Pagoda is the one restaurant that I have to eat at when I visit Utah. I love the egg foo yung, spareribs, shrimp, and fried rice. The staff is always friendly and service is great. Food portions are large and the leftovers are great to eat the next day.

We drove by this restaurant at evening and were very impressed by its artistic landscape, absolutely stunning! We decided to get out of the car to study this piece of art and somehow got the idea that we should try its food! As soon as we entered, we noticed a well-known local tycoon dinning with his wife quietly at the corner ! The decor and lighting are nice, but still this is not a place for a romantic date! Carpet is too dark and seems old! I was frowned when I started to look at the menu since there are not many choices, if you don't want something greasy or too much carbohydrates such as rice bowl or noodles. Anyway, we order a Teriyaki Chicken with Shrimp Tempura and a chick Donburi Rice Bowl. The Tempura is light battered, crispy and crunchy, very competitive. We liked it very much. The Teiyaki Chick is tender; however, too heavily sauced. The Donburi is cooked in a very special way. it is almost like rice soaked in a soup. It appeared to me that they mixed the egg, chick piece and veg together, then steamed them. It tastes a little sweet. Anyway, I would ask them to put rice in a separate bowl next time!

As for the service, the waitress was very nice and came over often to see if we need anything. The portions are huge; so, it will be good for group or family!

We have always wanted to go to this restaurant. It is so beautiful on the outside with its lovely Japanese garden. The moment we walked into the restaurant we knew something was up. No offense to the older generation, but it was filled with helmet hair. No one even remotely close to our age, and our kids were the only children there. The service, if you could call it that, was so slow. The food was bad. I ordered the tempura shrimp and they brought out cocktail sauce for it. Wow! that's really authentic.
Their restaurant was opened in the 1950's and I'm sure the menu has remained the same.

If you want to go to a great Japanese place try Takashi, or Kyoto.

My wife and I went on a sunday night it was empty and yet the service was extremely slow and unfriendly. Our waiter didn't touch our table for fifteen minutes and my drink was never refilled the whole time we were there. Our food was terrible (resembled closely a lump of slime atop some vegies) I didn't eat more than a few bites. The resturant was clean and had nice decore but i could stay at home and get that. The reason I go out to eat is to get good food and service Pagota offered neither.

Pros: Clean, atmosphere

Cons: food, service

This is a Great Japanese, American cuisine restaurant. I have grown up with the delicious fried shrimp!!! Inwhich I highly suggest you try!!!! They are the big, jumbo shrimp deep fried and served with the best red cocktail sauce ever!!!!!!. Also the Egg Foo Yong is simply scrumptious too (especially the shrimp egg foo yong!!!) The Chicken Tatzu Agee is so tasty!!! The sauce for the chicken is a sweet but sour soy sauce. It is very good. They have delicious wonton also. The spare ribs......the sauce - there is nothing better over white rice. The beef stir fry is really tasty too!!! I highly suggest you try this place. They are very nice also!!!! Great service.

This restaurant is tops! I have been eating here for over 20 years! Ever since it opened! At least once a week! I have always had great meals and great service. Pagoda is probably the cleanest restaurant in Utah. I have been in their kitchen and watched how the food was prepared - FRESH, not Sysco prepared frozen heat and serve stuff! Very clean. I went there one time to pick up take out and forgot my purse. The bill was $35.18. They said to go home and eat before my food got cold and pay whenever. When I went to pay a few days later, I parked my Vespa at their back door and went through their kitchen and noticed that someone there was feeding a stray cat in the back alley and even used clean dishes and gave water to it, too! When you eat at Pagoda, they treat you like you are a king and queen. I have seen Utah people go there in groups of 12 or more and make a big obvious deal out of leaving a measly 5 buck tip for all those people; or as the usual Utah way, NO TIP at all. and then have seen these same people under and no tip again over the years and Pagoda still treats these Utah people as good as normal folks!

Lured by the charming exterior and always crowded parking lot, my wife and I had been wanting to try Pagoda for years. First of all, do not expect "traditional" Chinese/Japanese (ie. Charlie Chow's, Koyoto). The food is EXTREMELY bland and prepared in a very heavy fashion (think corn starch). We had the Family Dinner, because we wanted to sample a wide spectrum of the menu. I'm not saying the food is instrinsicly bad; my complaint is that it is so entirely unmermorable. If you want flavorful, interesting food, look elsewhere. What you can count on though, is extremely high prices relative to the quality of the food. The Family Dinner is $13.95 per person, and tasted like it should have cost less than half that. Leave Pagoda to your grandparents. There are too many good Chinese/Japanese venues in Salt Lake City to waste your time and money here. Beware of the other reviews; I suspect that their authors have no tastebuds.

Pagoda has been a family tradition for years. We've always received the best of service and really good food. The Family Dinner is great for large group, though I recommend ordering off the menu. Their spareribs are utterly craveable, and they have some great udon noodles (both the egg and flour kinds). The food is a mix of American, Chinese and Japanese, and while it may not be the best gourmet food around it's always good and filling. The restaurant is open really late, offers large portions, and affordable prices (which is great for poor starving college students) and the are great for large groups.

This is a great place and the only Oriental restaurant open late in Salt Lake. Good ingredients and tasty sauces. Has both Japanese and Chinese. Not fancy but real good.
