Dr. Silkman is the best veterinary we have ever had (He is number 7). He is very knowledgeable and caring to humans and pets. We travel a great distance in order to have Dr. Silkman as our pets' vet. We always recommend him to friends and colleagues. He is a fantastic doctor, and Jordan River Animal Hospital is a fantastic center for our pets.

DO NOT GO HERE! My dog was dying on the table in front of the doctor and after nearly $500 in testing he could not even guess to a diagnosis or even give us options. He just kept rambling on and on and on about nonsense. He did offer to do more ridiculously overpriced testing however but I got the feeling he just thought "well he's old so he's probably just going to die". After putting up with him listening to himself talk for way too long we finally left. Another vet performed the same tests at 1/4 of the price and came up with a diagnosis, sent us home with simple medication and my dog healed and is doing fantastic.

I had a previous experience with this same hospital where my dog had a bacterial infection and they sent us home with what I understood was just an antibiotic. Wrong. This particular antibiotic has a high tendency of serious side effects. I know this because after my dog started pacing through the house, then losing control of his limbs, and drooling incessantly, I looked it up online. The doctor nor the staff even hinted that this was a strong medication and that I should watch for side effects. Their response when I called? "Oh yeah, that antibiotic can be that way sometimes". Which proved that they new and didn't even warn me! What kind of vet is this?

I was online looking for a new vet since I just moved to the area. I decided to go in here because when I called about my sick cat they got me in right away. Everyone was really nice and they fixed my cat up with just some medications. I didn't feel like they were selling her short on care but gave her just what she actually needed. I plan to go back and would recommend these guys to my friends or family.

Please please please do NOT use this facility! I'm serious. We took our dog in on a Sunday evening for a broken leg. Not only did the doctor tell us the break was a lot worse than it actually was, but they insisted that she needed emergency surgery. The cost they quoted us for the surgery was $4300.00. After scrutinizing their list of "needed" proceedures during and after the surgery we realized that there were A LOT (and I mean A LOT) of optional therapies, x-rays, post op visits, etc that were not even necessary. Dr. Gillespie told us that she absolutely had to have the surgery. There were no other options presented to us. We were devastated knowing that we could not afford the surgery that she needed. They led us to believe that if she didn't have the surgery, she would have to be put down. It was awful. Long story short, we decided to take her home that evening to decide what to do. During that night we decided to take her to her regular vet for a second opinion the next morning. When we took her in to her regular vet, we were given the option of splinting the leg with a HIGH likelyhood that the leg would heal just fine. We went with that option. If she doesn't show signs of the bone healing in 2 weeks, we will do the surgery. It is the same surgery as presented by Dr. Gillespie only the cost at the regular vets office will be $1000-$1200. Please do not use this office. They are crooks in my opinion who prey on those that love their pets and are in a vulnerable situation. I will also be filing a report with the better business bureau.

A quick comment to those upset with the cost of services offered from Jordan River Animal Hospital. You get what you pay for!! I had a Labrador who broke her leg running in the rain in a rocky area early in the morning. I called the hospital and despite not being open, someone came right in to be there so we could bring her in. Just like everyone else, we had to put a large deposit down as our dog had to have surgery. We found out that her surgery wouldn't be later that day so they let us bring in her blanket and spend as much time before and after the surgery as we wanted with her. We were very grateful and yes, we too made payments on that surgery. For those who think it's all about money.....this is for you. What we found out later is Dr. Silkman did the surgery later that day because he was attending the funeral of his grand daughter. He left family and friends that had flown from out of state to support him and his family so he could come in and help our pet who was part of our family. Don't question the care or dedication from Jordan River Animal Hospital. It's there. They provide services that other veterinarians can't or won't do. You get what you pay for. I am thankful they are there. I would refer anyone who loves their pet to Dr. Silkman and Jordan River Animal Hospital

Words can??t express how sorry we are for the loss of Stephanie M??s pet who is mentioned in the review below. We are also disappointed that when we provided their family with the best care, in the middle of the night, when not many other places are even available, Stephanie M is unhappy with our services and questions our compassion for caring for animals, especially when none of these concerns were expressed that evening.
It is surprising and disappointing to hear the hostility in Stephanie M??s review listed below, considering their family expressed nothing but gratitude for everything we did for their pet??s life until recently, 3 months after the procedure.
It is true, as with many other businesses, that we require a deposit, not a ??full payment?, before pursuing a large procedure or surgery. This does not mean that we do not care about pets or only care about money. If we don??t require these deposits or get paid for our services, we cannot continue to provide high quality, 24 hour care for our patients and the community.
We are truly sorry that Stephanie M??s pet could not be saved that night, but it was not without great effort and a long, complicated surgery that he could not be ultimately saved. Unfortunately he was critically ill and his family was given a grave prognosis even with emergency surgery. We warned that this was a very complicated, high risk, emergency surgery that unfortunately has a significant price, and in his case, he would most likely not survive. Just as with any other hospital, including Cottonwood Animal Hospital, emergency hour fees are higher than normal business hour fees. We also explained our policy of leaving a deposit before surgery and explained that if he did not survive they would still be required to pay for the services that were performed, just like any other animal or human hospital. With this information, the family still chose to try surgery, signed an estimate, left a deposit, and we did our best to save their beloved pet.
When their pet did not survive surgery, a large portion of their deposit was refunded and the appropriate amount was kept for the services that were performed. In all fairness, her final bill was $2634.98, and she chose to spend an additional $450 for pet cremation and paw print services. Stephanie M and family left grateful that we tried our best and expressed no ill will at that time.
The loss of beloved pet is devastating. We hope that Stephanie M and her family can overcome their loss and come to realize that we deeply care about our patients, and that we understand how hard it is to lose a part of the family.

My husband and I are avid Labrador Retriever owners who train, compete and hunt with our Labs. For almost two decades, we have come to rely upon Dr. Silkman and the Jordan River Animal Hospital for the highest quality of care available for our dogs. With outstanding veterinarian practioners and well-trained staff, Jordan River Animal Hospital (AAHA Accredited) is equipped with state of the art medical technology to provide the best care for our dogs.

An example of what ??highest quality care? has meant to us;

1) While training in the state of Maine, one of our dogs experienced traumatic spinal discomfort and was barely able to move. At that time, there were only three board certified neurological specialists (DVM??s) in the country and one was in Maine. After a lengthy and expensive exam by the specialist, we were told that our dog had a rare cancer and needed to have immediate surgery. Having doubts about the diagnosis, we contacted Dr. Terry Silkman due to our belief in his level of knowledge and care provided one of our dog at an earlier time. He went above and beyond the call of duty by agreeing to come into the clinic to examine our dog as soon as our plane arrived (on a Sunday). This was his day off, yet he made the time and the effort to be there for us. A long story made short is that our dog did not have cancer, did not require surgery and after appropriate treatments and medication, made a full recovery. Our trip across country, from Maine to Utah, was not in vain. COMMITMENT TO PATIENTS and CUSTOMER SERVICE. OUTSTANDING VETERINARIAN KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS with PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS.

I just have a few things to say about this very over priced hospital and money first policy place. I took my very loved family member there, boy what a mistake! I was about 11:30 at night and they called in Jennifer L Nitsche, DVM to see our dog a 4 1/2 year old Weimaramer who was part of my family since he was 10 weeks old! After a short visit she took him back to do some x-rays and came back in to tell my son and I that it was very bad and time was very important to try to save him! She could not treat him with out full payment of $4264.17. I begged her to save him and I would get the money! They do not take payments or checks! I did not have a credit card with a high limit so I had to call my parents! She said it is there policy not to treat until you pay in full! (even though I signed a paper claiming financial responsibility for any treatment performed) This all took time to get done! After my mom gave them a card and they ran it, my very loved family member died! They still charged me $3077.00. I would never recommended this hospital to anyone! That vet knew time was very important and still never did anything until they got payment! Please if you love your pets take them to Cottonwood Animal Hospital where there health is more important than the dollar! With every moment of the day I wish I would have taken him there instead! I only say this because now we take our love ones there and we know how they treat you! Also, Cottonwood does not have the 30% mark up on all prices that I was charged for an emergency situation that was not explained at time of service at Jordan River. Money is not a issue for me when it comes to the care and treatment of my loved ones. All I truly wanted was for Jordan River Animal Hospital to take the situation as serious as is was and treat my loved one in the timely matter that was needed!

I would not recommend going to Jordan River EVER!!! We brought our Newfie in, not being able to move, couldnt conrol his bowels, shaking, and had a tempurture of 106. They told us they would not do anything until we could provide 1200 dollars. i am not mad about the money i understand vet bills can get high, but i am mad that they were not willing to help my dog out until we had that infront of them. they did drop his temperature, but thats about it they told us nothing. We ended up taking him to cottonwood vet hospital and they were very knowledgeable and were able to tell us things it could be. and might i add ALOT less expensive then Jordan River! I defiantly feel Jordan River is about the money and not the pet.

Looks like Jordan River is about $12 cheaper than what the average price is for the Influenza vaccine. That math doesn't seem to add up Keri. $30 for the exam and $28 for the vaccine is $58, not $86 as you stated. Might want to invest in a calculator before you start making accusations like you're doing here.

Although I agree Dr. Gillespie is a good vet. I am beyond disappointed and out right angry with the billing practices. According to http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/pets/2009-08-30-canine-flu_N.htm the canine flu shot should cost around $40.00. Well, for my two dogs at Jordan River Animal Hospital, it cost me $172.00. $28 for each dog for the original and booster shot and a "Brief exam fee of $30" per dog. Are you kidding me????? For me to walk in and have a tech take each of my dogs back, give them the shot and bring them back to me it cost me $86 each dog each. That is double any price I have found at any vet anywhere. We signed up for the $700 annual program--can you say SCAM? It still costs us over $100 each time we go in for a "covered" service. After 4 years, I will finish my "covered" services and never look back. I prefer a vet that puts the animal first and not one that is only concerned with the $!

Dr Gillespie at Jordan River is one of the best vets in the valley. All the doctors at Jordan River really know their stuff and they and their staff are all extremely hard working and friendly. Yes, getting all the medical needs of your pet met can be expensive at times, especially if you have an emergency situation. But, speaking as someone who has worked at several veterinary offices, I would not trust any other clinic more with the care of my pets.

Regarding lindsayeden's one star review. I am an employee of the animal hospital and am familiar with this case. The client brought the cat in to our hospital after having it vaccinated elsewhere. (She must have been upset with the other clinic as well.) She was given an estimate for recommended testing and hospitalization but told us she could only spend $350.00. Tests were chosen to give the best chance of a diagnosis. Unfortunately, a diagnosis was not able to be made with the constraints placed on the doctor by the client. The client took the pet home with medications to try to treat the symptoms. Sadly the pet died at home. We offer cremation services for deceased pets through a private contractor. The client called and informed us that her pet had died and asked what to do with the body. We informed her of her options and she brought the pet in for cremation services but didn't want to pay or sign before she had a chance to speak with the doctor. Knowing the loss of a pet is an emotional time, we often will hold the remains for the client while they decide what to do. She was allowed to leave her pet with us until the doctor could speak with her. The doctor called multiple times, leaving messages for her to return his call, but she never did. Finally, a bill for services was sent to the owner after 3 months. After receiving the bill, they immediately called the hospital and accused us of misdiagnosing the disease and not caring. Unfortunately, we were not able to diagnose the problem with their pet or treat it with the constraints placed upon us by the client. We can't even be sure the pet died of the same symptoms since it was not in our care. It could have easily recovered, then ran outside and drank antifreeze. Once out of our care, as the client requested, we had no control. This does not make this client exempt from paying for services though.

I LOVE jordan river animal hospital. Downside is they are more expensive than other clinics, but as with most things; you get what you pay for. Ask for an estimate before you agree to anything, I always do and they more than happily provide one. Great Drs and staff.

Around 2:30am my husband and I woke up to our dog thrashing violently on the floor. Panicking, we loaded up in the car and drove straight to Jordan River because we knew they saw emergencies. They ran a few tests and determined that our dog had gotten into snail bait and his condition was not good. It took four days for him to turn around but he made a full recovery and is home with us now. I'm so grateful for Jordan River and the care they gave our little Moki. I would recommend them to anyone.

I have been going to this vet office for over 10 years in well I will now be doing my best not to go there. I find them Rotty friendly which is hard to find and when my last Rotty had cancer they where all so nice more then I could have asked for. There pricing while higher then some is worth it. You pay for what you get. However my last emergancy visit was nothing like I had had in the past. My dogs played a little to rough and well my Rotty got her ear torn & needed stitches. I called to find out how much do to I needed to see if I once again needed to borrow my mome credit card & was told it would be $200 to $300. While high for an emergancy room visit expected. While I was there The electricity went out & all I heard was my dog cry & not one tech or the vet came to tell what was going on. I was left in the dark fro over an hr, I called my mom & she had told me to leave however my dog was in the back so I was not leaving. Eventually the lights cam on & went again for another hr or so. My dog was given shots and treatment with out any word from the doctor, in the past he would always tell me what he feels is needed & let me decide. Well I was not able to pay then do to the electrcity issue & recieved a bill in the mail of over $600. I was in shock & when called for an explanation I was given an answer that they where nice enough to bill me instead of charge me that night, this was not a favor this was they where not able to. Not one vet apologized to me & jsut told me that this was the price & to pay & when I said I would not be returning they said that was fine as long as I pay my bill.

Dont listen to the people bickering about prices...if you dont want to pay for your animal to get fixed than have it euthanized...as for my CAT....it has the feline version of aids, the doctors and staff were VERY caring about my cat. It was $170 for blood work shots and vitamins. Health care for animals is about equal to health care for humans. THESE PEOPLE CARE AND TREAT EVERYONE FAIR. If you are cheap and dont want to pay $400 for your sick animal may i suggest having gerbils/hampsters instead of a dog....shots alone are going to be over $100....stop getting mad at the VET who fixed your animal...they arent the ones that made it sick....YOU ARE! pay more attention to your animal and the chances of it having problems are greatly reduced.

After spending nearly $650 and 5 weeks at my previous vet trying to diagnosis what was wrong with my dog and showing up for a scheduled appointment only to be told they were "overbooked" and couldn't see me, I went to see Dr. Silkman at Jordan River Animal Hospital. Their facility looks amazing! Dr. Silkman saw me quickly and within an hour I had a diagnosis and treatment options for about $175. A few days later, my dog was acting great and Dr. Silkman was personally calling to check up and see how he was doing. I send all my friends there now.

We have gone to Jordan River Animal Hospital for years and could not be happier. We have had everything done from routine checks to emergency surgery and I can't say enough about Dr. Silkman and Dr. Gillespie. Both of them are world class doctors and have always done the best they can for my pets. I have read other's complaints about it being expensive but I've always found them to be on par with other hospitals I've called. I'm a believer in the motto of "you get what you pay for" too and what I'm paying for is top of the line care.

We brought our dog to them in the middle of the night. She had escaped from the back yard and been run over. Both hips, one knee and the other ankle had been broken. She was a mess. They were understanding and professional during this time of loss. We decided to put her down because her entire quality of life would never have been the same. Thank you all so much for your support!! These folks are the very best!!! You don't feel like you are in an animal hospital at all but rather in a neighborhood vet's office!!! Thank you again!

Did you know that someone is there 24/7? When you call, you do not speak to an answering service, you are speaking to an actual vet tech right there in the hospital. That is what makes them the best in my opinion. Also, if you do have an after hours emergency it is so nice that someone is already there, you won't have to wait for someone to drive in to meet you, and when your pet is in pain, every second you have to wait feels like an eternity, and here you do not have to wait. When you get there, the tech is ready and waiting on you! I very highly recommend this place, they are caring, nice, sympathetic, and best of all, they are ready!

PROS: 24/7 vet tech in the office!
CONS:

We are so grateful for the wonderful doctors and attendants at this vet. Our unlucky dog has had some mishaps and has needed some surgeries... and we have always trusted the doctors, and they have always taken such good care of our little baby! And, they are always there and happily willing to answer all the questions I had, whenever I had them.

Nice Hospital, But they make you pay for it. Staff was friendly. If you dont mind paying the same cost as a human would in a hospital with no insurance. This is your place! My initial costs were over 1200.00 for just a x-ray, lab tests and other hospital costs. If he needed surgery which he did then the costs were over 3000.00.\non top of the first 1200.00. We finally found our old doctor and the costs were a 1/8 Of what Jordan River wanted. This Hospital in my opinion is not in practice for the care of animals. Just how much cash they can bleed from your bank account.\nI am not cheap when it comes to our pets. But i am convinced that they prey on pet owners when they are in a vulnerable state.\nMy advice is to stay clear and call around. There is many good vets in the SLC area that will not ask you to pay for their pretty hospital.

After scrutinizing their list of ""needed"" proceedures during and after the surgery we realized that there were A LOT (and I mean A LOT) of optional therapies, x-rays, post op visits, etc that were not even necessary. I will also be filing a report with the better business bureau.\r\n\r\n

Every time I have taken a pet there, I was told that the Vetenarian would examine my pet behind closed doors to me. I had one pet that needed a spay and the vetinarian did more things to my pet than was authorized and expected payment for unauthorized work done. Every pet I have taken in has somehow had a joint problem supposedly. I think this vet is out for your money. I do think I will go elsewhere from now on.

Pros: 24 hour service

I haven't ever written a poor review before but my horrific interactions with this place warrants others to know how poorly my animal and myself were treated. Brought in a kitten I had only had for 24 hours. The kitten was clearly in an emergent situation (couldn't stand up, was shaky and had no balance whatsoever). Upon initial check over, Dr.Gillespie took the kitten, checked her and brought her back stating that all the labs and other tests he had quickly run showed that she was just a bit out of it and should get better. I knew the cat was suffering but $350 and a handshake later, he assured me that the cat would recover. I took the cat home, still very concerned as I imagined that she was in pain. I checked on the kitten a few hours later and she had died in her bed. I felt like this could have been prevented. Long story short, they were unethical with the way they managed the care for this kitten (which was really nothing) and completely rude and unethical regarding remains of the kitten and showed very little respect to myself and my husband in person and over the phone. \n\nLike I said, I really don't write reviews, especially BAD ones, but this was awful! I will never bring an animal back to this clinic nor refer anyone to use this clinic. I understand that animals pass away but the way that Dr. Gillespie and his staff handled this situation was terribly unprofessional and inhumane. My business goes elsewhere and I have found that the Sandy Animal Clinic is just fantastic! Wish I had gone there first!
