Wow! And I don't mean that in a good way. It's hard to believe this place is still in business. The employees here are extremely rude and unprofessional. Don't waste your time or money!

Setting the scene: two attractive, professional women excited about spending an afternoon shopping for a grown-up Prom (you know, a group of thirty-somethings throwing a grand gala because it is a last shot at having the Prom that never happened because at 16 you were too shy, too flat-chested, had the wrong date, were stuck in a hideous decade, or were too broke to buy your dream dress...).\n\nDecades seemed a perfect place to find special, one-of-a-kind gowns and a vintage blue tux for my hubby (he had purchased a black tux with tails and a powder blue tux at Decades a few years ago that was subsequently stolen by an acquaintance who couldn't resist the fabulousness).\n\nWe found a few items to try on and needed help getting a couple gowns down from a high bar (there was a sign instructing you to ask for assistance). My friend approached the owner who did not offer to help--or even say hello--but instead asked her, with a boat-load of bitchy attitude, ""Did you read the signs?"" (??? This should have been my cue to hurl the dresses over my arm onto the floor and leave.) She assured him she did and asked him for his assistance at his convenience. \n\nOnce he deigned to approach us he did not make a move to help us with the gowns but instead stood with his arms crossed and began to lecture us on the following (remember, we are mid-thirties, pretty, dressed nicely, enjoying an afternoon of girl time and shopping):\n- you cannot try on antique clothing (YES, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, WE READ THE SIGNS!)\n- you can only take THREE items into the dressing room (I had five on my arm and, contrary to what he obviously thought, was not moronic enough to be confused by what to do with extra items at a fitting room)\n- about the fact that he has only TWO dressing rooms (by this point I had affixed him with a blank stare, like, really?)\n- and that we will need to take turns with other customers (Since the store was packed to the brim with an enormous crowd of four customers--including the two of us--pushing, jostling, clammering, making a mad rush at the dressing rooms)\n\nWhen my friend politely observed his strange behavior he did not apologize or back off, but insisted he was trying to ""help direct"" us to what we ""really wanted"" because we ""will try on too many things and then get overwhelmed and not buy anything."" Then he walked away!\n\nThere are a few issues here:\n- First, we need to try on an expensive evening gown before we decide to buy it, and if you do not want people trying on clothing, DONT HAVE FITTING ROOMS. \n- Second, how does he know what we will and won't buy? If there is anything that was made clear by this ill-fated shopping trip it is that he does not know much of anything and lives a very sad, small life behind his big counter in his smelly old store.\n-Third, HOW was he ""helping"" us, not just to find a dress, but in ANY way?\n\nActually, he did help us. He helped us cross Decades off our list of local stores we support. He helped us spend money with retailers who are kind and decent people. We put down everything we had picked out and we left (another customer lurking near the back of the shop looked horrified and apologized quietly to us for his behavior).\n\nThis man is mistaken if he believes that his CLOTHING is so special that it warrants treating HUMANS in this way. I advise everyone to stay away and not support anyone who makes the world any harder, meaner, or weirder than it already is.

I was extreamly nervous to go to decades because i heard of the horrible mean old owner and how he hates teenagers (compleatly understandable. my generation sucks).\n\n for my 17th bday my mom and i went. i am a little vintage addict and was wearing some slightly vintage clothes so i think thats why he didnt want to destroy me with his mind. but he was giving my mom dirty looks! it might be because she didnt see the sign that said leave your bag with him and i had to point it out. she left it with him and we where both extreamly behaved and polite. (exept when we saw some really off the wall clothes... laughed but didnt make a scene.)\n\ni dont understand. he is rumored to hate teens but he was polite to me. and mean to my mother... ? the cat was adorible tho. deffinantly trying it again in a few days for my 18th bday. \n\nbut honestly the clothes are worth it for grumpy up front. AMAZING selection. never seen one bigger.

I LOVE this store! I found Decades while I was in SLC on business. I wanted to get out of my hotel and see the city, but there is not much to do on a Sunday here. Decades is one of the few places open, and I am so glad I happened across it. I'm not all that interested in vintage clothing, but I love vintage jewelry. Decades has an amazing selection of both. I purchased two signed Eisenberg broaches for a steal. I easily would have spent twice as much money for these gems at the same kind of store on either coast.\n\nAs far as the attitude of the sales staff toward customers, my experience was nothing like what some other reviewers described. The clerks were very nice to me. I offered to let them take my bag when I walked in the store, and the clerk behind the counter thanked me and said it wasn't necessary. The owner walked through the store once while I was there, but I didn't feel like he was watching me. When I asked the clerk to open a case for me, he was very pleasant and helpful. I didn't feel that I was imposing on the staff. When I was checking out, the owner and clerk warmed up a little more and chatted a bit about the pieces I had selected and made some suggestions about what else I could do during my visit to SLC. They even directed me to a really neat antique shop a few blocks from their shop.\n\nIf I ever come back to SLC, I am definitely going back to Decades.\n\n

I have gone three times to this store and HORRIBLE experience. Worst customer service in all of Salt Lake.\nFirst time, I went in with my two children. They were in a stroller. Owner saw me struggling to get the stroller in and he just stared. This place is not stroller/wheelchair friendly. The owner is so rude! My children were in the stroller not even running around. He just looked at us like we were all in soiled diapers. I was looking for an 80s dress for a 80s party I was hosting. I told all of my guests not to dare go in that store. I sent other businesses info. on my invites for my guests to go find their 80s attire...but I told them not to go to Decades. The owner never asked if I needed assistance or anything. I was pre-shopping for over 50 guests. So not only did he lose my business, but business of about 50 potential customers.\nTime passed and I figured, well, maybe if I go alone. Mistake! Still a grouch! I needed some gloves for and evening gala...left feeling like I was not welcomed. The owner has this attitude. I guess if you do not go in looking like you came out of a vintage closet, then you do not ""deserve"" to shop there.\nThird is a charm right? It is obvious that SLC is not the fashion capital of the world and I needed a unique evening gown for a formal gala of over 2000 guests. I gathered some courage to walk in again to find a one of a kind gown. Never going back! Horrible, horrible, horrible service! I ended up buying a dress totaling $600+ somewhere else, so yes Decade's business owner, you might want to pay attention because have you been nicer, I could have spent that and more in your store for one of a kind items. I was searching for a dress and jewelry and hair accessories at that time and I walked out because of the owner. And of course, I told all my friends attending the gala to go somewhere else.\n If you do not care to be treated like an intruder, then welcome to Decades...otherwise, save your money and expectations of a good experience because you will not find it at Decades.

On a trip to SLC last week, I stumbled across this vintage store, and after seeing the selection in the window - I knew I had to go in...\n\nBefore I made my visit to Decades, I looked up some reviews and information online. Almost all of the reviews stated that the owner was rude and grouchy, and I was a little apprehensive about going in.....\n\nI walked into the store, and was greeted by the lovely store cat - such a sweet little thing! I said hello to the owner who was behind the counter, and saw the sign asking to leave purses with him, which I understand... So I gave him my purse, and he seemed to lighten up a bit after that.\n\nHonestly, this guy obviously prides himself on his amazing collection of antique and vintage wear. There were some obnoxious teens in there, pulling at clothes and yelling - he is probably just a paranoid wreck about his things getting damaged. I was in there for almost 2 hours browsing and I wasn't treated suspiciously at all.\n\nThe selection is AMAZING, it's the best vintage store i've ever been to, I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. The prices are wonderful, as well.\n\nI walked out with a lucite ring, a fur collar, and a mesh pillbox hat, I could not have been more pleased.\n\nThe owner treated me respectfully and we joked as I paid for my merchandise. I think he is just very misunderstood, and if you walk in there with a good attitude and reassure him about yourself there will be no problems!

Upon entry of Decades, I was surprised by the quantity of unique finds and the broad selection. Decades has so many wonderful pieces, and a darling store cat. \n\nTo address the owner of Decades, I found that most of the reviews posted here were completely negative, and I suspect exaggeration about him ""stalking"" customers. For a little while I thought so too, but he was just trying to find places to hang new (sort of) merchandise. He might have seemed a little snooty, but how can you not be prideful of a collection such as his?\n\nMy mother that came with me to the store was even able to find a pair of up-the-ear earrings that were nearly identical to the ones she had inherited from her grandmother and broken years ago! Great find. \n\nI had a wonderful first experience with Decades, and I can guarantee you I will be back for more.

Decades is the best vintage store in utah. The prices are very good and the owner is awesome. I dont know what people are talking about saying the owner is rude. Im in there every week and i always have a good experience. Maybe he is sick of people just playing dress up. I would be upset to if people were trying to squeeze themselves in clothes that are too small.

So, I'm only 13, going on 14. But I am a real lover of vintage. I had heqrd about the store, and I knew I wanted to go. I saved up 40 dollars (which took lots of hard work and time!) so I could shop there. I was about to walk in when I was stopped by an employee and told I had to have a parent with me. I was wearing a playsuit from the 50's! They really shouldn't assume that all tennagers are going to be destructive. I understand some are, but that isn't a fair judgement to make, just based on age. So I got my mom to go with me. We walked in and had to leave our bags with them, so we wouldn't steal! And the owner was a jerk and acted like I didn't deserve vintage clothing and I was some idiot. The shop kitty was super duper cute though :3 Beautiful clothing too. I found lots of unique treasures that I LOVE! The staff was very mean though.

I was first caught off guard by the fact that the reviews of the owner of this store were correct. I was as polite as possible as I heard he was a grouch. I even let him put my purse behind the counter so it was clear I couldn't steal anything, and he was still very rude. Acted like he didn't want anyone there.\n\nBut enough about him... their selection is AMAZING, all classics. Brand name bags for forty dollars and under... crazy, crazy boots and jewelry selection. They have anything vintage you could possibly ask for, and their prices blew me away. I bought a real vintage Prada bag for forty dollars today!\n\nThe selection is worth putting up with the awful owner! Don't leave out of spite! ; )

      Pros: huge selection, great prices

      Cons: rude owner

      .

I moved to SLC a couple of years ago from Los Angeles, and have been buying and wearing vintage for 15+ years now. Decades is, by far, the best vintage shop I've ever had the pleasure of stumbling upon. The prices are great and the range of eras, styles, and sizes is wonderful. It is a huge store with a great jewelry and accessories selection, as well as hundreds of amazing vintage hats. To address the previous complaints about the 'rude' owner... Why don't you all try owning a vintage store and having your merchandise trashed by giggling, disrespectful teenagers? Or have poorly attended toddlers ripping the hems of 1930's gowns. The owner of Decades clearly loves vintage and has the respect for these pieces that have managed to survive 40, 50, 60 years. He is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his collection for future generations to enjoy, including the loss of a few unappreciative customers. Why don't you all get off of your 'the customer is always right' high horses and realize that you have a top-notch vintage store in your little town (which by the way, draws an international clientele, including costumers and stylists) and show some much-deserved appreciation for the fact that he hasn't closed his doors and just sell all of his stuff on e-bay for way more money than you are all willing to pay without all of your hassle and criticism!

      Pros: great selection and prices

      .

They do have an awesome selection of EVERYTHING... Nothing here you can't find somewhere else with a little time to search. \n\nI held my baby while browsing and I thought he was going to ask me to leave by the way he watched me and paced back and forth. I guess they either thought I was stealing or they were nervous that my kid would slobber all over their stuff... either way - it bothered me.\n\nI spent quite a while searching for an outfit and I feel like that made them even more suspicious of me.\n\nPS - I just called and asked what their hours were. All he said was ""We're only open 'til 6"" but the tone he said it with meant, ""Don't even think about coming in, we're only open for 30 more minutes and don't want to deal with you""\nI was hoping they were just having a bad day...but... seems that's not the case.\n\nWhy do you own a store if you don't want people to shop there? BOOOO!

      Cons: Rude owner

Any period piece after 1900 you're doing, you can make costumes here. However Everything I've heard and experienced there has indicated that the owner isn't very nice. He was quite rude to me and my friends, has followed us around, and treated us like theives when we were actually there, and about to buy something, when he wouldn't just let us be human beings, so we, out of spite, left without buying anything, and we would only go back if we really needed costumes for a movie or photoshoot, and if we couldn't find it elsewhere first.

      Cons: Owner needs some Manners

The owner looks like Perez Hilton (the blogger) and he acts very self righteous and entitled to everything in the store, like it's his own personal collection of rare star wars collector glasses or something. His clothing selection is nice, but nothing the DI can't brag about better. The owner is terribly rude, and frankly it's hurting his client base. Being one in many social circles hurting one customer who dresses eccentric hurts us all, and I'm sure without whomever actually funds his store behind him, he'd be out by now with how his attitude is towards people.\n\nSerious just go to the DI or Thrift Town, because they at least treat you with dignity and respect, and they're prices are cheaper.

Because there is no way he could possibly stay afloat in this economy with the way he treats his customers. I've read the previous reviews and it seems unless you are an older male (in your 40s or so), you will be attacked by this proprietor who is in need of serious medicating.\nI did find his cat very endearing and friendly however n_n

Decades is great! Two of my friends and I were desperatly shopping for two masquerade ball gowns and a 1940's diner waitress outfit, when we heard about decades. Of course we picked a Sunday to go shopping and in Utah... We were so pleased when we found out that they were indeed open! We quikly found not only all three completely unique outfits, but two sets of hoops for underneath the gowns! And on top of great and kind service, the prices were VERY reasonable. The most elaborate of the dresses was only $32, were we had found others in other stores that wern't vintage and really not as stunning, that were for over a hundred! Overall it is a wonderfull store and I highly reccomend it.

If you are a vintage lover or just need to dress up for a fabulous theme party you will never find a better store in the country than Decades. I have been in vintage stores everywhere that I have traveled but have never found one with a more extensive and amazing selection or fairer prices. It reminds me of the stores that we USED to have when I lived in New York but with much more down-to-earth pricing. What on earth is it doing in Salt Lake City! I first read about the store in an article in the New York Times magazine and now I couldn't live without it- at least half my wardrobe must have come from there! The owner is incredibly knowledgeable and can help you find just about anything that you are looking for. You can see in his face how much he loves vintage stuff and he knows exactly what you will need for your twenties/fifties/eighties party that you need to throw right away. There is also a great selection of more modern designer clothing and jeans if you are looking for that. I wish they were open later- twenty four hours a day would be good- but they are open on Sundays which is rare around here. Anyway- I suggest that you run there as fast as you can. As long as you aren't my size. And pet the gorgeous store cat for me.

if you are reading these reviews about Decades you should be seeing a common theme here: Rude Owner and staff! They actually have a sign in the store that says ""No Unattended Teenagers"". Are they kidding? Teenagers are not the only people that steal. People steal at any age, any time. I found that offensive, and I even asked the employee at the desk if they were serious and they said yes. The entire time I was in the store I felt like a criminal. They were constantly watching my boyfriend and I, and when I asked the manager to unlock the jewelry case so I could try on rings, i thought he was going to ask me to show him some money first. Even worse, as I was trying on rings he stood and watched me the entire time, making me feel rushed and uncomfortable. Nothing fit, but no hard feelings about that, just that i asked the manager if he happened to know how much it cost to get a ring refitted and he said no and asked me if I was done browsing and shut and locked the case. I would have bought something or even come back around Halloween for costumes but because of the rude service I will never go back to Decades. If you want cooler stuff, cheaper prices, and a friendly staff I recommend Coal Umbrella. They love teenagers!!!!\r\n*By the way, if you're allergic to cats they have one in the store so you know ahead of time.

lots and lots of great vintage finds, although i see these guys scoring the local thirft stores and jacking up the prices, good for them. The location is great, pretty easy to park. Some good finds but the clothing items I have found, have never been in very good condition but hey its "" vintage"" not good vintage quality I guess. Got a dress there for a holiday party, paid twenty bucks, looked great in the fitting room, then zipper just crumbed when I got it home , right before the party... bummer. I have been going in here for years but seldom do these days just because of the horrible vibes that places radiates. mainly from the owner, who is un friendly and uber snobbish. For gods sake my man have a little integrity and be nice to your patrons. He really is so cold......Not nice at all......Won't go back for that one reason. Did i mention i also feel like a fugitve going in there? I have been watched like a hawk, what a terrible shopping experince. And I tell all my friends that too, seems to be a pattern. Sorry.

I shopped nearly every vintage, thrift, and antique shop in SLC, before hitting this one. And while shopping those other stores, their owners did their best to dissuade me from going to Decades, stating that they, (Decades), were rude and gave horrible service. Being the curious shopper that I am, I ventured over there to see for myself what all the hubbub was about. Boy, were THEY wrong!\r\nWhen I walked in the door, I was kindly greeted by the employee. And was allowed to shop without any interruptions. I was astounded by the enormous selection of vintage clothing.....at great prices!!!! There were bargains galore. \r\nI was very careful not to attempt to ask to try on any of the clothing labeled, ""ANTIQUE,"" since they request the customers not to, on many signs throughout the store. Rightly so, because those items were very delicate and very, very old. One rip and the dress is toast. Many people don't understand that.\r\nGreat experience! I loved it more than Cats! I will go again and again!\r\n

I have been shopping at Decades for five years now - I live in Logan and its my first stop anytime I am in SLC. The shop is amazing with an incredible selection and very knowledgeable owner (and the best shop cat in the world!). The whole look and feel of the store is fun! - from the funky glitter-block floor to the classic vocals on the stereo, you would think that you were in a much more metropolitan city. The prices are extremely good - I've yet to escape without multiple purchases. The owner is always friendly and helpful and he really knows his stuff! The shop features everything from antique Victorian through some of the best (of the worst) 80's dresses I've seen since my own prom... If you are looking for clothes, jewelry, hats, shoes, purses - or any other article of clothing - I highly recommend Decades!!!

With 2 weeks till my Prom I decided to visit every consignment store in SLC. When I reached this place I was amazed and in awe over all the clothing and jewelery.\r\nI understood the policy of leaving my bag, but the guy there at the time was extremely rude.\r\nIn short, I now am going to buy my vintage clothing online, rather than have to deal with that loser.\r\nNo beautiful 20' dress is worth it.

Being a costume designer, I have shopped at Decades for several years, but yesterday was the last time. The owner of the shop has the best selection and prices in town, but it is not worth putting up with his attitude. I have spent many hundreds of dollars there for show costumes, but each time I come in for something for myself or with a cast member, I am treated like a potential suspect, or worse, an idiot whom he assumes will ruin his clothing. I live an hour away, and yesterday made the trip with a budget to purchase 9 costumes for two characters, with more purchasing trips planned for upcoming weeks before the show. After choosing about 10 articles for try-on (which were not vintage, but 80's-90's cocktail dresses which could be remade into flapper costumes), he told us that we could only try on one or two. I understand that true vintage items are too fragile to be tried on. I understand that he has a lot of teenagers that come in there just for fun and don't take good care. But I am a grown woman with an education in costuming, and a repeat customer with money to spend. Yet each time I come in for a specific purchase, I am thwarted at every turn. Many of the purchases I have actually made there have been when the owner was out. Once I fell in love with a red velvet 60s dress on a mannequin. When I asked to try it on, he told me it was ""already sold."" Two months later I came back and it was still there. The employee on duty let me try it on and I bought it on the spot and have used it in three productions since. Several times the owner has refused to let me or my daughter (who is a costume design college major) try anything on. Interestingly, when I have been there with my husband, I have been allowed try-ons, but not with my daughter. What's up with that? We are petite women who understand how to care for clothing and have serious money to spend. I just don't get it! I told him (nicely) how I felt and that I wouldn't come back. Very sad.

Decades is another great local shop that you'll want to spend some time in.

Vintage finds galore, with reasonable prices for most items (although they can get pretty pricey for hot antiques and real 'finds'), you'll want to go back often as new stock is always arriving.

Lots of fabulous old costume jewelry, hats, shoes and purses.

Things are crammed sort of willy nilly, but that's part of the fun of vintage shopping.

A good selection of both women's and men's items, shopping here is a blast.

For anyone who moved from a big city (I'm from Toronto, and feel at home in NY and Chicago) to SLC, you may miss the vintage shops - I know I did until I found Decades. While you need to remember that a size 8 was a ""large"" back in the day, so the dresses may not work for you with their itty-bitty waists, even the full-figured woman can find coats, hats, shoes, purses, and other accessories that are sure to be unique. They always have a wide selection of both men's and ladies' clothing and accessories, ranging in price from surprisingly reasonable (I found a never-worn pair of funky boots for $20) to outrageously pricy (for the true antique articles).

Me and Phill went wandring around in all the shops downtown, in search of something interesting to do. We ended up in Decades which I could probably say is now the coolest place I have ever been. We messed around for an hour or so, and then I made a joke asking what he thought about me buying my prom dress there. We laughed, and then I saw it! It was my dress!! It looked like a princess. It was white with sequins and pearls, and it poofed out, so when you'd spin around it a circle it would fluff out. It was amazing. I bought the dress, and loved it.Oh, by the way, my princess dress was only 35 dollars.
