I decided to try Osaka Sushi today for lunch. I found their information on this site, called them and asked if they had a menu available online. They said they did, and gave me the web address. I decided to try something from their lunch menu (oyako donburi) priced at $7.25. I called, and ordered with no problems. When I went to pick up my order, they told me the cost was over $11. I told them that their online menu said it was $7.25. The cashier said "Oh, the prices have changed from the online menu." I then looked the item up on their current takeout menu to find it priced at $7.99. I pointed this out to them and they reluctantly tried to figure out how to reprice. The cashier then said "That will be $9.53." I questioned the price again to which I was told that they add 10% for takeout orders. It doesn't say that anywhere on the takeout menu I had in my hands or anyplace else that I could see. At this point, I knew that, no matter how good the food might be, I wouldn't be back.

My husband and I found Osaka by mistake one day and we decided to try it. Sushi is one of those items that can be really good or really bad and Osaka definitely delivered. I was surprised to find authentic sushi in Layton. The sushi chefs are all older Japanese gentlemen, and they do a fantastic job. Their prices are reasonable, and service is ok. If you want good sushi, I would recommend going there.

Pros: Authentic sushi with experienced chefs - great food

Cons: Small dining area, not intimate.

The sushi is my favorite in Layton. They also have a great lunch special. Some have said the service was bad but when I've been there I haven't had a bad experience just not above and beyond.

Pros: great food

Cons: average service

★★★★★

I have been to Osaka quite a bit and i still can't seem to find sushi quite as good as theirs. I love going in and having the smiling faces of the servers as i walk in they are just so happy to see me come in and do their very best to take good care of me. I am amazed at how good the food because of the fact that we don't live next to an ocean and yet they still seem to have fresh fish. Those of you who complain of getting sick from the food but yet no one else did then that should show you that it was not the food but you as a person was just getting something. I do however know that sometimes if you go to the same place over and over agian it will never be the same it will either be better or not as good but yet I still keep going back for more.

Pros: service and food

Cons: none

food is great, but the blonde waitress is rude!!!!!!!!!!! Went there for valentines day and she just threw everything on our table like she didnt care, not to mention she had an attitude even though we were very polite. Another waitress ended up taking over-she was alot nicer!!!

★★☆☆☆

Take out. Don't eat there. Take it home and eat in front of the tube with your own booze. The service is lacking, the ambiance is just okay.

This restaurant offers some of the best westernized sushi in all of northern Utah. As a huge sushi fan I have ate at several restaurants in Utah and honestly this one has some of the best tasting! The only thing this pleasant place lacks is private dining rooms. Their place is nicely decorated and the hours of operation are choice!

Pros: Food! Decoration! Friendly waitresses!

Cons: No private rooms-

My husband and I went to Osaka for my birthday. This used to be one of our most favorite restaurants. We were excited to go back since it had been a while since we had eaten there. We sat down at the table and my husband said we would just be ordering rolls throughout the night meaning we would be there for a while. I don't know if this set the waitress off, but she had quite the attitude. We ordered miso soup and rice and the dynamite appetizer- which wasn't as good as I remembered it being. We had still not received our plates or ramekin dishes for soy sauce. My husband asked for the plates and the ramekin dish and the waitress, no lie said with a lot of attitude, "Yeah I know what you're talking about... I work here." We were stunned! We later asked if we had offended her somehow and she said no she was just joking. Ha! Not a very funny joke. From then on another waitress had to come take our order and help us the rest of the night. When the tall, blonde, and rude waitress came back she basically threw the roll down on the table and walked away. She also did the same thing with the check. All I can say is bad service makes the food taste not as good, and when you end up leaving with a bad taste in your mouth, chances are you're never going back. I think this restaurant needs to give their employees a little etiquette training.

Pros: Pretty good food

Cons: Service, price

I have had bad sushi 3 other times in my life and trust me I know it when I see it. We have eaten at Osaka two other times and the food was always great. The first time the service was fast and friendly. The second time my fiancee who had ordered something cooked from the kitchen was nearly finished by the time my sushi was brought out 15 minutes later. I mentioned to the server I thought the restaurant needed a lesson in meal pacing and she apologized and was very nice but not even a free drink or anything was offered. I thought it was a little ridiculous. This last visit was on Friday September 26th. The food was great but I woke up the next morning and y head was spinning. The trouble is with how fast this kind of food is digested. By the time I was able to purge...less than 12 hours later all that came up was liquid. It made for a very concentrated case. It kept me down all Sunday and today I feel fine enough to hop on the lap top and try to save you fine people from the experience I endured. In the restaurants defense I did eat there with 2 other people and they were just fine. I got the lucky piece I guess. Beware!

Pros: Good vulue

Cons: sloow service and more than you bargained for

★★★★★

One of the top Shushi restaurants in Utah and surrounding states; in this geographic location we don't care if the chef is Korean, Japanese, or American, as long as the food is better than anything else we have access to. I've spent twice as much for half the quality at most places in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming. If these guys made their food so it tasted authentic Japanese, they would be out of business in a week. I'm going back again tomorrow.

Pros: The food.

Cons: Ambience is acceptable, location is acceptable.

★★★★★

I'm so glad my husband and I ignored the bad reviews for this place. We have been here twice so far and have had an awesome experience both times. We have tried several of their rolls and all of them have been nothing less than delicious. I agree with the other reviewer about the nationality of the chefs... WHO CARES! If the food they make is good, why does it matter where they're from? This is a great little place with a great atmosphere and excellent food. We will definitely keep coming here!

Pros: Great atmosphere and great food for a good price

Cons: I wish they were open earlier on Sundays

★★★★★

First of all this place is delicious, try the picoso. I have been to Japan numerous times and to quite nice restaurants too. (dont want to toot my own horn but I have been to restaurants and seen famous folk like Yoko Ono). This places food was really great. People have been complaining in their comments that koreans are the chefs, yes that is true but why does that matter. They are expert chefs and very friendly, why is it any different to have a korean chef as opposed to an american chef. And the New York guy is a jack@$$ he probably is a fry cook, he is just a stuck up tool. I would recommend this place to anybody and the price is amazing too. The service was excellent they noticed it was our first time in there and gave us a complementary appetizer free of charge. I thought that took a lot of character and I will always give them my business. All the bad comments are rediculous and written out of their @$$

Pros: Food, Service, and Price

Cons: New Yorker's comment

★★★★★

I love osaka. Foods are always fresh, and tasty. Huge selection of sushi rolls and sashimi. People are super nice too, which makes me go back every single week!

★★★★★

rolls at osaka are the best!! wide selection, always tasty. I love anything with shirimp tempura, their tempura is super crispy and crunchy!!!

★☆☆☆☆

This place is waaay over rated. There is nothing japanese here and service is slow. The only thing Japanese was me and my son. food was awful.

Pros: Location

Cons: everything else

★★★★★

Wow I don't understand why these bad comments, I went there last night with my girlfriend and we had an amazing time ! Sashimi and tempura appetizers were phenomenal while these sushi & rolls (try andy roll!) were succulent ! The service was great too, promptly seated, very attentive & friendly staff, Cassie and Sunny ! I will deffinitly return to Osaka !

Pros: Great food, service !

Cons: Bit crowded during peak dinner time

★★★★★

I am not much of one for Japanese food, but was talked into coming to Osaka Sushi. I was surprised at the variety of food they had to offer. I love their boxed meals - a little of everything. It is a small, intimate restaurant where you are treated like family. I was treated kindly and enjoyed everything I ate. I could tell there were many there that are regulars, because the workers called them by name. I would highly recommend this quaint restaurant. It's variety and friendly service make it an enjoyable eating place.

★☆☆☆☆

Osaka is not recommended! I applied there and did the training there for a while, and I was shocked how they
prepare their food! None of the sushi chefs are Japanese they are all Koreans, Chefs in the kitchen are of course not Japanese, they do not use gloves while they prepare their food. All the fish are vacuum sealed,
frozen, then defrost to prepare. I was shocked when I saw a server took a bite off of the customers dirty plate!
and how most people were working there illegally. If you are planning to go there, do not go there right before ten minutes they close, unless you want the owner to throw you a fierce look, being talked behind your back and, bad customer service.

★★★★★

I loved their special rolls. Servers were all nice and nice atmosphere! I will go back. And all fishes were super fresh. arigato osaka!

Pros: huge selection of maki rolls

Cons: none!

I was very disappointed in this restaurant because of the reviews I?ve read stating how GOOD this place was when it really should have been a Korean BBQ or a fast-food joint.
I ate there once last week while visiting my friend. I?m a chef in New York and I know what I?m talking about. THIS IS NOT A JAPANESE RESTAURANT. None of the chefs or the servers were Japanese. Servers were wearing Jeans and god knows what that Happi coat was.
My friend had a cold beef teriyaki combination with horrible presentation and tempura was a joke. Sushi was the worst. First they gave me a #2 Yellow-fin tuna (lowest possible grade tuna) and on top of that, the fiber in tuna was broken down (frozen, and or Vacuum sealed). When fish is frozen or vacuumed, it gets a watery texture and also looses flavor. Yellowtail was obviously not fresh with that artificial coloring. They had frozen vacuum packed gas-treated Yellowtail. The worst part is the TILAPIA. Tilapia is a pond-fish found in Kenya and Egypt. This fish SHOULD not be used in Sushi, however, cheap sushi restaurants point these of as Red snapper which is a completely different fish house. It was a good example of what sushi bars should not be. Most armatures probably won?t see but, there is a difference in Japanese and Korean cuisine. I had never seen a Korean bbq and Japanese sukiyaki together in so called Japanese Restaurant. I would rather had Burger King than that.
Please don?t write reviews if you don?t know what you?re eating. Don?t say its authentic if you don?t know the culture. Japanese cuisine, traditionally is supposed to exenterates the NATURAL flavor of the theme ingredient by keeping it simple and artistic; not killing the flavor using spicy sauces, that?s Chinese and Korean food. Nothing in that place was authentic and food did not taste good except miso soup.

That place needs to be kept a secret. :)

Pros: location, it was by my hotel.

Cons: everything i stated.

★★★★★

I can say Osaka offers the most largest selection of sushi rolls among all those sushi restaurants in utah. And Osaka's roll is THE BEST. I tried all Japanese restaurant in downtown salt lake and so far Osaka has the closest taste of authentic Japanese sushi. Ingredients are always fresh and food always taste exceptional and presented beautifully. Welcoming staff, cozy atmosphere is another plus, too. Definitely Osaka is the best kept secret in utah.

★★★★★

My family loves this restaurant! The service and food are great! Start off with a little Edamame and then try the dinner box. Many good sushi selections and reasonable prices make this one a family favorite.

★★★★★

We make the drive north to Layton for the best Sushi in Utah! Great service. Full menu. It is the best kept secret in Davis County. Try the candy Roll and the Spicy Tuna Hand Roll.

Pros: Sushi, service, Full menu choices

★★★★★

I am a regular at Osaka- it's been almost a year. I have always satisfied with their service, and also the food. The strength about this restaurant is that they have lots of selections of sushi rolls(If you know how to eat sushi, definately try Osaka. The food is very authentic) The variety of the food+quality makes our family always happy. Our favorite food in this area!

Pros: Authentic Japanese food with wide selection

Cons: none

★★☆☆☆

I used to be a regular at Osaka since 2002. After my last visit I will never return.
The service I received was beyond terrible. Took 20 minutes just to get a menu
and I never got my meal chicken dinner box after 30 minutes of my girlfriend getting hers.
Went up front to ask and they told me it would not be coming at all.
After complaining and telling them I am a regular they seemed to not care.
The manger on duty was not around so I will be writing a real mail letter to voice my disgust. In the end I will be taking my money elsewhere.

Pros: decent food

Cons: horrible service, management

★★★★★

Osaka sushi has the best sushi in overall utah- 'authentic' Japanese cusine that really satisfied me. Service is also great- sushi chefs are really nice and friendly, and servers were great!!
I would recommand some rolls like Layton Baked, Candy Roll, and JJ special- they have many creative&yummy rolls that you would never seen in other restaurant.
I am living in SLC, but I travel to Layton to get Osaka's food! It's that good guys!!

Pros: EXCELLENT FOOD, Great Service, Reasonable Price

Cons: None!!
