One of Salt Lake City's best and most affordable Japanese restaurants, Kyoto succeeds at providing all the sushi options and offering a wide range of authentic Japanese cuisine, which will hopefully urge those myopic labelers out there to expand their palates. Kyoto captures perfectly the simple regality that only the Japanese can create with little more than wood, paper and cushions. Minimal yet elegant paper curtains and hanging lanterns provide soft lighting and white accents, while the rich, dark wood trim provides a sharp contrast and balance. Everything on the menu at Kyoto is refreshingly different from everyday food in name, preparation and presentation. Newcomers to Japanese cuisine will be pleasantly surprised by all the choices they have, and long-time enthusiasts will rejoice over the variety and quality of the dishes. -Jenni Koehler, The Daily Utah Chronicle

I love this place

by Tami B. | insider Insider | Rank: 17,831

This is a great place with really good food. The tempura veggies and the sushi is sooo good. I love the atmosphere and the option to sit on the floor. Great location and prices are reasonable.

Impressive

by Anonymous

We are searching for a place we like for sushi here. We came from CA originally and have also lived in NY...so we can be very picky about our sushi (especially the freshness). We took my father-in-law to lunch here. The service was okay, all of our lunches came out at different times. Better freshness, but awkward with 1 or 2 out of 3 eating. The sushi was good...not fantastic, but better than some we have had here. The prices on the sushi menu seemed a little high. The tempura is very good, very light and the sauce is not over-salted.

Pros: Decent sushi & food, Very good tempura
Cons: Parking at peak hours, Prices a little steep

Great Traditional Japanese Cuisine

by ceted

Kyoto offers some of the best sushi and sashimi in town, as well as some excellent non-sushi dishes. The tempura is very good, and the Beef Sukiyaki is outstanding. The service is always great and the atmosphere is a nice alternative to the common trendy sushi bars. Highly recommended.

Pros: Great sushi, wonderful traditional Japanese atmosphere

Cons: None

Nothing memorable

by myasquirrel

I recently moved to slc from florida and have been looking for a good, affordable place to eat sushi. In FL there was one sushi place I frequently went to which had huge, really tasty rolls that were very inexpensive. Usually between 3-6 dollars( including rainbow, dragon, and other specially rolls). I went to Kyoto because I had heard that they had pretty good, affordable sushi. While it was affordable then other places- the sushi was below par. For one thing, the sushi menu was sparse having only a handful of rolls to choose from(nothing creative either). They used minced imitation crab meat and the rolls were bland and boring. I was disappointed to say the least. Other food items on the menu may have been good but they were pricey.

Pros: The miso soup and tempura vegetable appetizer was good

Cons: Sushi was below average. Other food items were pricey.

Best Udon in Utah

by watkins07

Always same great taste! Love the nabeyaki udon and tempura. Best food in utah. Kyoto never seems to fail me. The owner is so friendly as well as the watiress ladies. They seem to all be from Japan, yet their english is very easy to understand and they are so kind and fast. Recommend Kyoto to everyone!

Pros: Great food and service.

Cons: There's always a bit of a wait.

Authentic Food and Atmosphere With Delicious, Reasonably Priced Sushi Took Me Back to Japan...

by tabehodai

We arrived on a Friday night at just after 5:30PM, in order to avoid the evening rush. Despite not having a reservation they were able to seat us right away and gave us plenty of time to enjoy our dinner. Our meal consisted of sushi and appetizers. The variety, quality, and relatively low price of the sushi was wonderful. We enjoyed every bite of it! My favorite was the spicy tuna roll as it had a smooth flavor with a little kick and just the right texture. The freshness and authentic style of all of the sushi made it some of the best I've had in Salt Lake. For appetizers we ordered Gyoza and Age (Japanese style fried chicken pieces). The Age seemed rather expensive for an appetizer, but turned out to be served in a big heap on a large plate over the top of tempura vegetables with orange halves on the side. There was easily enough to feed all five of us and so it turned out to be a surprisingly good value. In fact the Age tasted very authentic and reminded me of the Kara Age I often ordered at restaurants in Japan. I plan on returning to this restaurant many times in the future. As I found out later we were very lucky to be seated arriving on a Friday night at the spur of the moment. As such I would also recommend making reservations before going.

Pros: Authentic food and atmosphere, Delicious Sushi at a very reasonable price, Good service

Cons: Some entres seemed a little pricy, Parking lot is a bit too small to acomodate so many customers

Sorry, it's expensive.

by mvparish

The "Meal Price" rating needs to be adjusted to reflect "$$$." Trust me if you want sushi there are better places that are a lot cheaper!

Pros: Nice ambience

Cons: Prices and Service

My Very Favorite Restaurant of all Time!!!!!

by unclemaxx

Put this Restaurant on your ?Must Try List? My recommendations include: Ebi (Shrimp) Tempura, Chicken Teriyaki and Gyoza. Ginger Ice Cream is a real treat. My wife loves their California Roll. I think you will find they have the best Sushi and Sashimi in town. I have been going here for almost 20 years and literally hundreds of times and I have never had a bad meal. Reservations are a good idea especially on Friday nights. Lunch is less expensive than dinner and a great treat.

Good though pricey

by ambika

Traditional Japanese, seriously great food and great servce. Now for the only two downsides: Your portions will be much larger if you eat there than if you order it to go, though the price remains the same either way. Also, The prices are higher here than at other Japanese resturants. If you don't mind the higher prices, this is a great resturant for traditional Japanese.
