If you are thinking of getting anything more than a simple manicure, go elsewhere! I went here to get a trial run for my wedding nails and Sugar House was rated next highest after Frizzles, which I couldn't get into. The nail tech Nila was at first very friendly but she wanted to sell me acrylics. I wanted gel tips and told her so. I've had a hellish time with some of the UV nail polishes (Shellac, Gelish, etc) so I wanted her to be extra thorough. So I inspected everything she did and asked lots of questions. Well, apparently, she didn't like that because she started getting very short with me and going off and whispering to her co-workers, at which they would stop what they were doing and look at me. I know I was being picky, but DANG...it's my wedding and I've had a LOT of bad experiences with nail techs. So I wanted the white tips with a pink overlay (not so experienced that I knew what that was called!) but she gave me clear tips "bc you want them so long." Ok...then, glued the nails on and then proceeded to file down my nail bed, just like they do when they do acrylics...which is another reason I didn't want acrylics--I didn't want my nails ruined for the next six months. She was so zealous and careless filing my nail bed down, she actually hurt me--I swear, she almost put a hole in my nail bed with that file! Then, she put about 5 coats of OPI's Axxium gel on there. When I noticed the gel was not applied smoothly, she said "Oh, I can file them down and make them smooth." So she did. I had a conversation with the receptionist upon checking out, who had gel tips (she said they are called "pink and whites") and, interestingly she does NOT get her nails done there. And she said her nail tech did NOT file the nail down after the gel has cured. Also, my nails are all thick now, like acrylics which is precisely why I didn't WANT acrylics. I told the tech I wanted a french manicure--she painted the white tips on--no airbrush or anything. She didn't even bother to put a clear coat of gel over the white tips to make them stay longer. And when I asked her to trim my cuticles, she said people usually make a manicure appointment the week after they get their tips, not the day of. But she did it anyway. So I went to check out and she'd added an extra $30 to the already hefty price to do nail tips--a total of $90. I got pissed and said she HADN"T given me a manicure--she'd just trimmed my cuticles. After a bit of back and forth in which the receptionist went to check with the nail tech, they finally caved. STILL, I had to pay $60 for a bunch of WAY thick nails that the polish is going to chip off of in a few days.

I Have gone to sugarhouse for waxing and massages for 3 years. Only tech I don't recc is Brenda as she tends to reuse wax strips and end up breaking hair off instead of pulling it out properly so that waxing job lasts a long time. My massages have always been great although sometimes the staff massaging me has been too chatty which is annoying but the actual massage is so good I still tip well and have been happy overall.

NOT THE PLACE TO GET YOUR HAIR OR NAILS DONE. ITS TEMPTED ME A FEW TIMES WHEN I'M THERE AND ITS ALWAYS BEEN A HUUUUUUUGE MISTAKE. THE NAIL GIRLS COULDN'T KEEP THE PAINT ON MY NAILS AND EVEN THOUGH I WENT TO THEIR SPECIAL COLORIST EXPERT TO TOUCH UP MY CURRENT HIGHLIGHTS SHE TURNED MY AUBURN HAIR HOWDY DOODY ORANGE WITH HER BLOND HIGHLIGHTS AND I HAD TO GO TO A REAL COLOR EXPERT TO FIX MY HAIR TO THE TUNE OF 250.00 SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO CHOP IT ALL OFF!

Even though I always tip very generously the staff seems to pick and choose who they cater to and pamper with attention. (Maybe just the big spa packages?) I'm more concerned with getting a good waxer and masseur consistently since those services cost so much and they do that better than any other place I've been to. Like I said avoid the hair and nail salons and if you want your butt kissed don't expect it from the staff as the girls at the counters are all barely older than highschool age and not trained to be very courteous or attentive.

SUCKS!!! Don't waste your money.... rude staff, poor customer service and NO parking! Don't waste your money. Try Circe on Washington St. or ANY where else. My wife and I have had massages all over the world and this is the WORST! Also expensive for the service.

You have got to be kidding...this place is a far cry from the experience I thought I was going to receive..I mean you read reviews and decide to try the place out..I was disappointed from the moment I walked in -No one acknowledged me -as they were too busy chatting amongst themselves and when they did notice me standing there-they seemed disinterested. Ok I thought well, maybe the massage would make up for it---not on your life the worst massage ever! I was cold, and the therapist acted like they could care less as they could NOT adjust the heat and their breathe was sooooo bad----upon check out I couldn't wait to leave that place-yet i had to wait AGAIN to check out as there was no one there to help me! ICK! save your money and time ...not worth it!

I've been going to Sugar House pretty regularly for about a year. I get massages, facials, and hair "stuff" done there. I've heard a few bad things from a couple of clients, but I've never had a negative experience there. It's pricey, but in my opinion, you're totally getting what you pay for, evident in the fact that you usually have to schedule a good bit in advance.Ingrid is a hair-coloring genius. Megan gives great massages. The facials are awesome. Go, go, go! (But don't forget your checkbook.)

My friends and I have had a different experience than some of the reviewers ...and it wasn't a pleasant one. The receptionists are rude and immature, the staff is innattentive and instead discuss their personal lives and insult clients behind their back. We couldn't believe how poorly run the place is, and during all this, the manager/owner is oblivious to this atmosphere and the kind of experience the customers are having. Sugarhouse is not inexpensive, and we were left asking ourselves what we were paying for...to be treated rudely, to be left waiting while the staff finished their gossip session? The decor is nice, but Sugarhouse is just not a a pleasant, friendly or relaxing environment. Save your money and find a salon and day spa that actually welcomes their clientele.

I had my hair and nails done for my wedding, and I brought my maid of honor. A week ahead I also tried my hairstyle with my tiara. The stylist was very friendly. The pedicure lasted for three weeks! I selected Sugar House because of their clear, user-friendly web site. The place is not cheap, but at least they post prices online so you know what to expect.

I am new to the area and chose Sugar House based on the reviews I read here. Thank you for not steering me wrong! I made an appointment for color and a cut. My stylist, Ingrid, was great and I could not be happier with the results. Customer service was excellent from the moment I walked in; everyone was very attentive. They have style assistants to do the washing and conditioning, which I like, because assistants spend more time than a stylist would, washing and massaging your hair and head. Very relaxing. Anyway, I'm definitely going back to Ingrid for cuts and color, and to check out their other services.

I recently went to Sugar House to have a few services, I was convinced that there were no good spas in Alexandria. I had tried them all. My friend works at Sugar House and she told me that I would not find the same dissatisfaction if I would just go. So I did, and I had a great experience. From the customer service to the massage itself, it was soooo good! The bathroom was clean and the atmosphere was decent!

I got a manicure, pedicure, and my eyebrows done there not too long ago. My eyebrows came out fabulous! The technician I had was named Amy, and she did a great job. The area where waxing is done is very quiet and serene. My manicure and pedicure weren't as good as I expected. My nails came out fine, but the technician wasn't very friendly and seemed extremely bored. I was expecting a relaxing enviroment, but it was more like any other nail place you just walk into when you feel like it. People were talking and the lights were bright. I have had other manicures and pedicures at different spas (particularly Serenity Day Spa in Old Town) that were better than the ones at Sugar House.

The Sugar House Day Spa & Salon is amazing all around... the atmosphere is so warm and relaxing, and the staff is wonderful and very attentive (though the spa is pricey). I had heard from pregnant friends that a really good pregnancy massages is very hard to find I couldnt have been more thrilled with Sugar House! I went in for a pregnancy massage in my 7th month, and felt so very, very pampered and relaxed!

I received a gift certificate for a massage and a body scrub here, and I was the most relaxed I had been in a long time. The sugar scrub was so great and my skin was so soft afterwards. The Vichy Shower was a really nice touch (the first time I had ever done something like that). My masseuse was fantastic. I spent some additional money to get a facial and was really happy I did. It's the best one I've ever had.

I live a little far away now, but I hope to make it back to Sugarhouse soon!

The masseuse here really know their craft When my wife and I have a stressful week with the dog and kids we usually make a stop here to relieve some of our built up anxiety. The ambiance at Sugarhouse is very relaxing and they really know how to treat their customers. They even offer snacks and beverages everytime we venture in.

I'm always stressed from work, and Sugarhouse always relieves me of tension. The atmosphere is calm, relaxing, and soothing, and the masseuse is firm yet gentle enough on your back for the ideal massage. They offer snacks and drinks to you, which made me feel like royalty. Every trip here is like an hour in pure bliss. I couldn't recommend it any greater!

My first visit to Sugar House was 2 days before my wedding for a swedish massage. The salon area is downstairs, which was a bit nosy, but upstairs I was pampered from the moment I walked in - the atmosphere was just very calm and relaxed. The staff are super friendly, drinks and snacks are provided and I felt like a queen for an hour. My masseuse was wonderful - just the right amount of pressure and I never had to tell her to back off. She put me right to sleep!
The only downside is parking. Old Town isn't an easy place to park, but there is a pay garage about 2 doors down from Sugar House that had pretty reasonable rates if you can't find street parking.

I was given a gift certificate to Sugarhouse for my birthday and decided to use it on a 90 minute massage. From the moment I arrived, I was catered to by friendly staff. Spa treatments are done upstairs which is nicely decorated, with calm, soothing music playing. I changed into a plush robe and then enjoyed my massage. The massage therapist was wonderful, just the right amount of pressure. I left feeling completely relaxed. I would definitely return.

PROS: Friendly knowledgable staff
CONS: Parking can be difficult as the spa is located in Old Town.
