If you are looking for a classy, upscale atmosphere this place is not for you. If you are looking for a quaint small Italian place with low prices and incredible sauce this place is it! I've eaten at a couple of "Italian" places in the DC area run by American Italians and even a few run by Italian Immigrants and have been very disappointed in the sauce (tastes like its right out of the can). I'm no expert but Ruffino's sauce is hands down THE BEST Italian/tomato sauce I have EVER had anywhere and the prices are very reasonable to boot.

A neighborhood classic, but not so clean, not so attentive, not so italian and not so great. My friend that has taken me there is italian and she likes it, but she admits it isn't the real deal. The mushrooms are garlicly but sadly just missing somehow. The bread is tasty but on the far side of pleasantly crunchy. The pastas are reasonable but the Alfredo just lacked a certain something, and the veal only so so...
Wish I could say it was better because it is a hole in the wall sort of place that I really like.

Ruffinos has been around since I was a kid. Their Italian food is simple, but warm and filling. The price is unbelievably inexpensive. The restaurant is packed tight since the space is small, but that is due to their large following. It is very casual, so don't expect to wow your first date there.

It is not for everyone due to the simplicity, but with good food and prices, you should come out smiling.
