Pat Trey was one of my very first grappling instructors. I was training with him before he opened Trident Academy and I was one of his first students at Trident Academy in Woodbridge VA. I value the time I got to spend training with Pat and look back on it very fondly. If you live anywhere near Trident then you owe it to yourself to train with Pat.

When our two sons were old enough, my wife and I developed a checklist in our minds of the qualities in the martial arts school we wanted them to join: fun, challenging, promoting self-discipline and practical self-defense, variety of disciplines, and high-caliber instruction. Given this lengthy laundry list, we know we got lucky with Trident Academy. As the parents of two students ages 5 and 8, and now students ourselves, we cannot be more complimentary of the school, the training, the instructors, and their commitment to the kids, parents, and adult students in the "Trident Family."

I've been a member of Trident for almost 3 years now. This school is hands down the best I have ever attended. The instructors are top notch and each one lends their own individual style into the training curriculum. Having come from other schools, Trident is hands down the best in the area.

I didn't really have any expectations other then learning self defense when I joined. After a short time training I noticed a poster on the wall advertising a competition. I instantly had a dream to compete in that competition and an even bigger dream to win it. I mentioned it to my instructors and they said they would prepare me for it.

Long story short, I'm now a 2 time champion of that tournament. Not an easy feat for someone who is well over 30 years old.

You will find that everyone from the staff, instructors, and even the students are friendly and helpful. Everyone wants you to succeed and fulfill your individual goal.

I would recommend if you have even the slightest bit of interest to come try some trial classes. It may change your life. I know it did for me and I am forever thankful.

Myself and two sons have been with TRident for over two years. Their instructors are top notch and work well with students who want to be there and parents that support the program.Since Trident has started the competition team the motivation of the children and parents to become one has risen. Making Trident's students even better. There have been problem children in the past and I think the instructors and staff handled them well. When a child can't even sit through a class without acting out, crying, running to mom, why move him up? Especially when that child disrupts the class enough to be suspended several times, and takes up so much time from the instructors the rest of the class is shorted instruction because of it. Then he sits for over an hour crying at the top of his lungs next to the mother, who sits there reading a book or talking on the phone and not disciplining or talking to the child, this was everyday..
Top notch school, top notch staff, best Martial arts program for both adults and children in DC area. I wouldn't go to another academy nor take my kids to any other because of the caliber of training.

This program used to be great but the owner/trainers began to put all of their effort into a competition class. Basically it became if you were not interesting (or able) to commit to the competition class then your child is condemned to repeat learning the same basic skills over and over. They complain when your child acts out but he/she does so because they have mastered all skills at the class level but there is no class to move to unless you do the competition training.

I've been training at Trident for the past 6 years in addition to participating in a number of other martial arts curricula both on the military and civilian side and I can say confidently that Pat Tray's program stands out as more comprehensive and reality-based than the other programs I've been exposed to. What makes this academy so special is the fact that its instructors either compete in full contact matches regularly or in Pat's case, in the real world. Contrast that with other programs and you'll find that at other dojos or what have you, maybe one or two of the instructors have ever fought, the other instructors just do it for fun and have happened to get good enough at it to teach it. Also, look at Trident's "on paper" qualifications and you'll find that they're affiliated with legendary instructors across the board: Rigan Machado, Ajarn Chai, Dan Inosanto, and Erik Paulson. I found the atmosphere friendly and highly conducive to learning martial arts, and I never hesitate to recommend them to anyone interested in bettering themselves by learning a new skillset.

First, please understand that I have been an active martial artist for the last 15 years, and attended numerous schools. Never have I been more disappointed in the caliber and scope of the learning while at Trident Martial Arts academy. Their instructors (with the exception of one or two) are unmotivated and lethargic. Though they tout their master instructor Pat Trey, I never saw him while there. The lessons were limited in scope and extremely repetitive, and despite going there for over 6 months, I did not learn anything of consequqence. Please, reader, consider another school. I wasted $1620 for a year long contract, and only stayed for half of it.
