Our Boy Scout Troop visited the Washington DC area. We camped in a Group camp site at Lake Fairfax Park. We had a wonderful time in Washington and came back to our campsite after 11 hours of walking all day. We were tired. We ate our dinner and prepared to go to sleep around 9:30 pm. At about that time, 5 cars started driving around the camp loop road. A ranger appeared and must have shown them to their campsite. They settled into a site near us. They only set up two small tents which seemed odd for 5 car loads of people including crying babies and pre-teen children. Soon they had a camp fire burning and loud music playing.

We went to bed, believing they would quiet down by 11 o??clock. We could hear that they put their kids to bed at 11; I guess that??s what the two tents were for. The adults continued to party with loud music, loud talking, yelling, and heavy drinking. This continued all night till about 4:30 AM when the male adults appeared to go into their cars, start their engines and go to sleep. One car actually drove away. I don??t know how they were able to drive. I believe the women did a little clean up, because we could hear the beer bottles being tossed around, and then they got the kids up around 5 am. I think the women then slept in the tents while the kids made even more noise around the campfire. There was continuous noise coming from their camp site from 9:30 Saturday night until we left on Sunday morning.

Needless to say, no one got any sleep that night. I talked to some other campers on Sunday morning and asked if they got any sleep. They were just as mad as we were.

It??s clear that this group came into the camp ground with the sole purpose of having an all night beer party!

When we checked out the next morning, we let the person at the office know about this, but he said the ranger leaves at 11 PM.
So who is there to monitor the camp ground for something like this? No one!

We have cooled down during the summer at the Watermine several times! My children have gotten a free coupon from the Library summer reading program each year. It's great fun -- even when croweded! The kids think that the lazy river is a blast to go around and around and around. You can bring in your own picnic, we haven't had any problem leaving our stuff on our chairs and enjoyed the family atmosphere.

We have camped at Lake Fairfax campground multiple times. It is a great facility. The spots are big. My parents bring their 35 foot RV up and really enjoy the location. The bathroom facilities are nice and well maintained.

The grounds are kept nicely and there are lots of actives to do in the area. There is a lot of open space for playing games (football, badmitten, etc) they have a very large picnic facility that is used by many locals. There is a lake that i believe you can bring your canoe and launch close to the campground. There is also the watermine water park that seems to be a lot of fun.

I would highly recommend this location for camping, picnics or just a nice walk.

The water mine is the perfect place to spend the day with your kids and friends. Its got a great swimming area for kids, with water slides and water obstacle course and a loooong lazy river that floats around the whole park. Their website always has $2 off coupons, and you can bring in the food and drinks you want. There are also a pizza place inside as well as a place to buy ice cream.

PROS: family fun!
CONS:

This park is located in Reston, VA. It has a great regional waterpark...great for families and kids of all ages. The lake is nice for fishing. Their is a campground, but we did not have that great of an experience in it. The sites were small and the campground was crowded.

Lake Fairfax park is open all year round. This is where they usually stage any fireworks display in this area. I went to this huge park this July 4th for the fireworks display show and it was awsome. This is mainly a camping spot with 136 camp sites. The other attraction here is the Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole that is mainly designed for kids. But I always see a huge family crowd here. It has slides, flume rides, a mountain with mine shafts and tunnels, Rattlesnake River etc. There is huge lake here with boat rentals. But this year(2005) there wouldnt be any rentals due to some renovation work. You can also go fishing here.

The Water Mine, a Fairfax County run operation, located in Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, VA, is a great place to cool off on a hot day. It is a water park that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is so much fun that we end up visiting several times each season. The rates after 5pm, during the week, are discounted. There are campgrounds, but we have never used them. You can rent paddle boats to tour the lake. This is a great time for the family.
