Dog was boarded at this facility several times- after the last, I will not return.
The window to pick up your boarded dog is narrow but fair- after 6:00PM you can no longer pick up your pup. After travelling and working a long day, I showed up at 6:10PM with check in hand, and the lady that "worked there" told me tough (she even called the owner Rick and he said "too bad"). I work 12 hours a day; a little flexibility would have been nice, especially since I've been a loyal customer. I had to pick my dog up at 6:30 AM the next day... AND THEY CHARGED ME FOR THE EXTRA NIGHT! My dog was bathed, HOWEVER, she still smelled and was matted with hair. I had to re bathe and brush her when I got home. Also important to note; I called the answering service on 2 seperate occasions and no one called me back.

I liked that the dogs play outside all day, but the facility smells like feces, is dirty, and customer service is poor. The Humane Society where I adopted my dog had a nicer facility than Coastal. You lost my business Rick and I will shy people away from your establishment due to your personal lack of professionalism, customer service and filthy boarding environment.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Dirty facility, poor customer service, dog was filthy

All the negative feed back is beyond me because I don't think people actually gauge what goes on at Coastal Dog. Coastal dog is a boarding facility, a doggy day care and a training facility. WHY IS YOUR DOG MUDDY/DIRTY WHEN YOU PICK HIM UP??? Because they let the dogs play ALL DAY -aka, doggy daycare-! Instead of being cooped up in a kennel all day, or only let out in a long run by themselves, they let the dogs play together. There are 4 seperate yards, one for smaller pups, others for bigger dogs. If certain dogs don't get along, if they're agressive, OF COURSE the dogs are not going to be able to play with the others, common sense. That's not their fault, it's a problem with the way the owner has socialized/not socialized the dogs! I have a 6 month old Rottweiler who I would take to no other place.I will admit, that at first glance I was turned off, as the location doesn't seem ideal and at first glance it didn't seem like it would be a true facility, but once you walk around and really see the interaction between dogs and staff, it makes you understand. This is not a child daycare, this is a dog facility! There is shelter, there are dog houses, if the weather is too bad, they take the dogs in, but they do ask if you would like your dog to be out if the weather gets inclement. The water pails are attached to the fences, not in bowls on the ground where they can be knocked over! It's little observations like these that can open your eyes. My pup goes to doggy daycare at least once a week, is usually boarded a few times a month AND has gone through obedience training with Rick, and let me tell you, from my experience with both Petsmart and Coastal, I would NEVER go to a franchised pet store to train my dog again. I learned tricks and cute things at the pet store, where as at Coastal, my dog is so much more obedient at a younger age than my previous dog. I gained knowledge for myself as well as for my dog. My pup is my world and it takes a lot to give someone else that trust to take care of him when I can't. The staff there recognizes him everytime I bring him in and even when I leave, I see them playing with him. Little things that make me know that he is in the right place. And everytime he comes home, sure he may be dirty (that's why they offer baths!!!) but he's a happy and tired pup. I brought him home yesterday and he slept from 6pm-5am this morning. How's that for peace and quiet? As many dogs that are there every time I go, it is an indication that enough people appreciate the things that Coastal does to keep them afloat. I think it is a great business, a great value and it gives my boy something that he would never get at another kennel or from being at home all day. The staff works their butt off to keep the place running and I can guaruntee that it's not a job that a lot of people would be willing to get dirty doing. The prices are great, especially in these hard times, pick up times are flexible and I feel welcomed every time I come in. Did you ever think that the dogs may be a little sluggish/depressed when they come home is because they had such great interactions with other pups while they were there and then they were yanked out and brought back home only to people who don't give the attention that they were given by countless other dogs? Dogs are not humans but they do share characteristics, so think about it a bit more before automatically assuming that it is the facilities' fault. This is my dog's place and I would reccommend it to anyone who asks.

Pros: All day interaction, friendly staff, a happy pup!

I boarded my dog overnight for 2 days. Granted, it was raining all weekend so that didn't help the situation. However, when I went to pick up my dog he was outside and soaked to the bone. He is only 15 pounds. I was told they just him let out to use the bathroom. I totally understand that this is a hard situation because with the rain, you really don't have a lot of choices. The lady who was there when i picked up didn't really know how well my dog did because different people work on different shifts.

I was most upset by the fact that when I got my dog home, his bark sounded weird and he was depressed for the next few days. He also drank a ton of water right when he got home. I've never felt so bad for my little guy.

Pros: owner made sure my dog was up to date on his shots

Cons: dirty, muddy, cold, do not accept credit cards

.

I have taken my dogs here to board 3 times. After the last time, I never will again. The place was so disgusting. There was still dog feces everywhere from the night before. The dogs had not even been outside to potty yet when I got there. Which means they went 13 hours without being able to use the bathroom. The dogs looked fine but once we got home they both drank so much which led me to believe there was not enough water left for them. Another lady was there at the same time to pick her dogs up and said the place has really gone down hill lately. Her dogs were not given the meds that were needed either. The no more than 13 yr old girl that came out to get my dogs admitted to me that she had no clue what she was doing so she would have to wait for the owner to get out of the bathroom to help me. It was not acceptable at all. The gutters are falling off and in one section, they would fall off into the puppy pen possibly hurting a small dog.
It needs to be remodeled and new employees need to be hired. The place was filthy and there is no AC at all! Not good since the temps have been so high lately. I would give it -5 stars if I could.

Pros: not caged all day

Cons: not supervised at all, not enough water, FILTHY

i have to disagree with the negative feed back..... i have brought my dog there for over a year and i have to say they are the best.... you have the option to have your dog unsupervised.... we live in an apartment... and my dog loves playing in a big yard....and he is worn out when he comes home...... i have seen other kennels and thats what they are... and that is where your dog is kept... in a kennel.. all day ....only to be let out a few times a day.... coastal dog is a great place..... your dog gets exersise rather than being cooped up all day....

Firs,t I completely agree with the one star review already posted, I would give no stars at all.
I can not tell you how unsatisfactory it is that a large group of dogs are left outside in a pen alone. Don't believe me? Drive up for yourself. No buildings for shade, there are trees but that is it! Some dogs are kept in crates all day in a house that smells horrible. Are you willing to leave your dog somewhere that is not supervised mixing with dogs of unknown temperments and left outside in the current heat we have been experiencing here in HR?
Next, I want to address the training there. Back in the day police dog training was done with compulsion methods, that is not the case today but unfortunately, that seems to be part of the training today at this place. I have personally seen a dog after attending their training, and it is absolutly heart breaking.
Bottom line, don't take a chance with your family member because they have the lowest prices. The results may be disasterous and long lasting. Find a dog daycare where the dogs are always supervised and you are allowed to see every inch of where your dog may be kept. Find a trainer who used positive and current methods and can work with dogs without losing their temper and a member of some kind of reputable training group or is certified.

Now I have not used this daycare but I wouldnt use it based on what I saw today. I am looking for a daycare to place my baby Cutie Pie in and I looked at two locations today including this one which was horrifying. My pets are my children and I would not imagine leaving my girl outside alone with a ton of dogs and no supervision. When you drive up to the location, litterally there are a ton of dogs outside with no person in site. I came by at my lunch hour and no one was there. I did not see any water outside for the dogs and there is very little shade. I marked this off my list and will keep looking for a location in the hampton area that is approved by the ABKA.

If I could rate this place with ZERO stars I would. I am only writing this review because I am absolutely shocked at the two positive reviews. It is almost as if the 2 people who work there had to write those 2 reviews....It is difficult to come up with words to adequately describe my experience with Coastal. The place is filthy, and not just average "lots of dogs" filth. We're talking unsanitary conditions for humans and pups. I was shocked when I brought my dog in and one of the women just grabbed him by the collar and literally dragged him into the playpen area. I will never ever bring my dog back to this place. When we picked him back up in a few hours, he was severely dehydrated and drank nearly ONE GALLON of water within the first twenty minutes of being home. He took several days to get back to normal--and we are talking a one year old very energetic puppy here. Those first days he would just lay around and the only way to describe him would be depressed. Yes, the price is cheap for Coastal, but you get what you pay for. Please do NOT take your dog to this place. There are a number of other places around town that are so so so much better.

Cons: everything else: lack of sanitary and decent living conditions for the dogs to sum it up

We have two dogs, Sparky & Sport, who have been beloved members of our family since we rescued them over 12 years ago. They had been abused and abandoned and did not trust anyone but my husband and me when we first brought them home. Our vet told us about Coastal and we enrolled our dogs in a training class taught by Coastal's owner, Rick Tvelia. We wanted to train Sparky and Sport to accept the presence of others and not react negatively. Rick was very patient with them and with us and we were impressed by his knowledge and expertise. Shortly after the training class was over, we decided to take our dogs to Coastal for Doggie Daycare. We both worked full-time and kept long hours much of the time. Sparky and Sport would be at home alone all day, so they'd keep us up at night wanting to play. Once we started taking them to Coastal for Doggie Daycare, however, they became happier, more contented dogs. They've been going there every weekday since 1996 (excluding holidays, of course) and although they love my husband and me and are happy to come home with us every night, they are just as thrilled to go to Doggie Daycare every weekday morning! They love the staff at Coastal and the staff obviously loves them.

Coastal is very well-kept. They have 2 large fenced-in yards and a smaller one for puppies. There are also numerous stalls where the dogs can go inside or outside at will. The staff strives to match the dogs according to personality and preference, grouping dogs with those who are their "friends". They provide plenty of water, exercise, toys, etc. and are very accommodating when it comes to the wishes of the owners and the needs of the dogs.

When we have to go out of town and can't take our dogs with us, they go to Coastal for boarding. It is so much easier to be apart from our dogs when we know that they are being so well cared for. It's obvious that the people of Coastal love dogs and the whole Kelly family loves them right back!

We have actually had many great experiences with Coastal Dog Services in Newport News. We have a Springer Spaniel, our pride and joy, whom we have left there a dozen times and have nothing but good things to say about them. They are VERY clear with how things work and what your dog will be doing during the day before you leave them. The dogs do not stay locked up in a kennel or a run all day. They put the dogs in a large play area outside where they are allowed to run and play and interact very freely with other dogs. They give you the option to do this, it is not mandatory. They are more than happy to keep your dog in the run, if that is what you perfer. Brace, our Springer, loves being out with the other dogs and has so much fun. It is like summer camp for him! We were a little concerned at first about whether he would do okay with the other dogs, but they assured me that it is very rare for the dogs to have a problem without their owner around. The owner, Rick, is a former dog trainer and police officer for the NYC police department, so he is very knowledgable about dogs and how they interact. They also were clear that he would probably get dirty, but they offer a bath for ONLY $9.00 on the day you pick him up! What a deal. They are also VERY affordable. So many places in this area are SO expensive, but not them. With all of the traveling that we do, it can get pretty expensive, but they make it reasonable for us to do it. If we pick him up in the morning, we are only charged for half a day! Their hours are a little strange, but it is well worth it for us. He may get dirty, but he has so much fun doing it and they clean him! I have noticed that they have many return costumers, in fact, they take care of a dozen or so dogs on a regular basis for doggy day care. I would highly reccomend them if you are looking for something where your dog can have fun and not be locked up all day long, be well taken care of, and affordable.

This place was absolutely horrible. I left my dog here for 4 nights and when I picked her up not only was she filthy with mud but she was filthy with feces. These people just leave the dogs out all day without any interaction. It rained the week we were gone and I know she was left out in it because she was sick when we got her back. Not only that but she had bites(dog and insect) and scratches all over her because they don't watch the dogs they just put them outside in their yards. Picking her up we also saw that there was NO water outside with these dogs at all. The website promises boarding with raised bedding. No raised bedding was seen. They promise interaction with the dogs. When I went back it was two people and 51 dogs!!! No one was interacting. They were left outside to do whatever. Not only that but when I walk up to my dog to pet her face now she flinches. She has NEVER done this before. She has never had a reason because she's never been abused in any way. I will be reporting this business to the appropriate board. From now on I will board my dog at the Grafton Vet Hospital. They are certified with ABKA and my dog rushes to the door to get in and greet all the wonderful people there everytime we take her. At Coastal Dog Service, as soon as we put her on her leash, she DRAGGED my fiance to his car and tried to scratch her way in it to get away. For days after that she was depressed and didn't want to play. The owner claims it was from being exhausted from playing. I claim it's from being left out in a fenced in area with 25 other dogs to do whatever and not having enough water. If you love your dog at all....do not board them here.

For days after that she was depressed and didn't want to play. The owner claims it was from being exhausted from playing. I claim it's from being left out in a fenced in area with 25 other dogs to do whatever and not having enough water. If you love your dog at all....do not board them here.

Pros: NONE

Cons: filthy, understaffed, irresponsible
