As a consignment store, Practical Computer is overpriced, but still can save a lot of money over stores selling new equipment. I've had good luck with most of what I've bought there, although I have overpaid for the Mac systems I bought. The worst situation was when I got a defective Mac computer. I took it back and they gave me store credit, but my only option was an iMac that was grossly overpriced. Being trapped, I wrote the check. That's the bad side of buying there.

On the selling side, it's a whole other story. If you dare to consign anything to them, expect to be ripped off from the start. They took pages of inventory from me to sell, and even admitted to pieces that they "sold" to their own staff immediately -- and I never got a penny from those sales. I did get some checks for items they sold to the public. As for memory cards and upgrade boards, they promised me on four occasions over the year that I pressed them for the pricetags to share with me the price/value of each and put them up for sale. They then told me they installed them in computers they wanted to sell. Again, I didn't get a penny for the RAM or upgrade boards given to them to sell for me.

So . . . if you're a buyer, shop carefully and you can make out. If you're a seller, use eBay or Craig's list. Don't trust your stuff to these people unless you're willing to lose big.

I went to this place as it's so convenient from where I used to live. I had a Toshiba laptop which need to replace the sound card and I can't do it myself. I brought my laptop to Practical Computer Inc. They need a call to appoint a time first, then when I come-in, they already ordered that specific parts from Toshiba and installed for me within 1 hour. What a great service, no need to wait and staff there is very helpful.

PROS: Convenient
CONS: A little pricy

This store is located right off the beltway at braddock road. I have used practical computer to repair a number of computers in the past and have always been happy with the service and knowledge of the staff. Sometimes you have to wait to get it serviced, osmetimes taking a few days. Their consignements are decently priced for really old parts, but newer (but still used) items are generally too pricey (compared to their new counterparts). They also build custom built to order machines, but we found them to be pricey as well (although the parts were high quality)
