After a fantastic day biking though False Cape State Park, my biking buddy and I were starving!! The stop at Margie and Ray's was perfect. Ice cold beer. Fast, friendly service. And great food. We shared the steamed seafood platter, fries and onion rings and went home happy. The seafood was all good (i'd prefer real butter to dip the crab legs in, but no big deal). Fries and rings were crisp and hot. (FYI - if you order the seafood platter as as appetizer for yourself, don't order an entree. The serving is quite gererous!

We'll definitely be back. Next time we have to try the really yummy looking chocolate cake we saw. The girl who ordered it said it was fabulous.

What a HUGE disappointment. The steamed shrimp were the $3.00 per pound grocery store "easy peels" about an inch long. The fried shrimp were the same with a little breading. The hushpuppies were obviously the frozen machine made style that tasted like sawdust.
The only good thing about the entire evening was the waitress. I've had better seafood at Long John Silvers!

Margie & Ray's is with out a doubt the best down home seafood cooking in Va Beach! This is casual dining at it's best. We recommend the she crab soup and the fried flounder-you will walk away very content! It is busy during tourist season but they have a nice outdoor deck so the wait is comfortable. As a local business owner many out of towners ask for recommendations on good sea food dineing-they always call to thank us!

Make no mistake, Margie's is a NO FRILLS seafood fry-house. As long as you're comfortable w/ coastal culture, you'll be happy with your meal here.
My family and I eat here regularly and REALLY enjoy their fried seafood dishes. Fresh seasonal entree's are their specialty, and a favorite w/ the after-church lunch crowd on Sunday's. This place is very popular w/ locals ~ get there early!
During the summer months it's not unusual to have Sandbridge beach-house renters converge on the place en masse (parties of 8-15), which can lock up the kitchen. So be prepared...
Also, great steamed seafood and lively, comfortable bar for laidback relaxation close to the beach.

Margie & Rays was the worst facimile of a seafood restaurant I have been to in Virginia Beach or anywhere. The food was so bad I couldn't eat it and I can eat anything. Not a picky eater. The service also BAD ! The crab legs were miniature. Nothing like the T.V commercial I once saw of huge bowls of seafood sitting in front of patrons. The stuffed flounder was so dry & was stuffed with some form of whitefish, no taste,no diff. from the flounder it was in. The waitress actually told us we were req. to leave a 20% tip !! for poor service and nasty food that was very high priced. Appetizers were delivered after we started our meals. They were sent back but still appeared on the bill. Do yourself a favor, skip this joint its probably frozen reheated fish living in a Warf like building which usually harbors good eats. Nothing good to report. I am a local and will never go or send people there. It's a rip off in plain english. if there were a no star rating thats what I would do.

I ate here several times with coworkers of all races for lunch while working in the area and the food was always great however, I decided to take my wife who is african-american there for dinner one night since she loves she-crab soup. We were seated in the very back of the restaurant and completely ignored by the wait staff 15 minutes after walking around us and waiting on other patrons the waitress took our drink order and food order 30 minutes later our food arrived minus silverware. We waitied another 15 minutes for acknowledgement from our waitress and were finally handed silverware to eat our cold entree's with. We kindly declined the food and asked to be charged with the drinks and soup so we could leave they complied but treated us like shit while we were leaving I have never been so humiliated in all of my life! I didnt know we were going back in time to the 1950's. My suggestion is that if you are not white do not eat here its almost like walking into a klu klux klan clubhouse

All I'm trying to do is find hours that they're open for business. No-one answers their phone... there's no web-site & no automated machine with information. We just moved here... been there once & enjoyed the food. I'd recommend they catch up to the 21st century!!

If you are looking for a deliciously Southern seafood experience, try Margie and Rays. Their crab soup is amazing, the food plentiful, and the service welcoming. Not a traditional chain owned dining center, this privately owned restaurant is not for the picky, fickle, or aristocrat. But as a local Virginia Beach resident and seafood fanatic myself , I reccomend Margie and Rays to everyone, just as long as you're ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into a giagantic plate of delicious home made seafood.

My family drove past this restaurant on our way to stay at our vacation beach house. We drove past this place thinking that does not look like a nice place to eat. So we drove on and did not stop. We kept hearing good things about it from other people so finally in the middle of the week we stopped in for dinner. We were greeted by a lovely hostess who sat us immediately. Then we of course oredered she crab soup which was brought in less than two minutes. After the first bite i knew i was hooked. For diner we had the tidal wave for four people. When it came we couldn't believe how big it was. It had all the fried things including french fries, hush puppies, and coleslaw. It also had all the steamed things including broccoli. we thought the place and service was amazing and next thing we are visisting we are for sure stopping in.

We ate here with our 27 month old. It took 1 hr for his chicken fingers to be served. I waited almost 30 minutes for a refill on my sweet tea. My wife's shrimp were not deveined and when we asked about this, we were told that is the way they serve them and we are the first to ever complain. Then the owner proceeded to tell us these are the best shrimp we will ever eat and was not willing to accomodate us whatsoever. We asked that we not be charged for this dish since we would not eat it, so they tried to charge us $6 for the french fries that my wife ate as part of this dish. When we questioned this, they ripped up the check in front of us and told us to just get out. We did not try to argue but wanted to understand the bill. To be treated that way was horrible. I witnessed a worker step on the paper tablecloth and another one drag on the ground, but she still proceeded to put it on a table - not sanitary. Drive past this locals restaurant if you're on your way to Sandbridge.

If you are a fan of fried seafood then there is no better place than Margie & Rays. It is my favorite local seafood eatery. If you are going with two or more people then I would recommend ordering a family platter. It has a nice variety of shrimp, scallops, clam strips, and fish all on one big tray! The prices here are extremely affordable and the service is very friendly.

PROS: huge portions

This is a wonderful restaurant for those of you traveling back and forth on Sandbridge Rd. Don't let the decor scare you-it is absolutely a hole in the wall kind of place. The food is wonderful-the seafood the freshest! Make sure you start out with a cup (or better yet, a bowl) of their she-crab soup. It is absolutely divine, and something you will remember for days to come. The fried seafood is probably their specialty, and if you can catch them when they have an all you can eat fried seafood special, you will feel like you've won the lottery. The prices may seem a little much at first look, but once you've eaten your meal, and are absolutely stuffed and happy, and still have enough leftovers for lunch the next day, you will realize the prices are very reasonable. Another nice feature is that although this is a family restaurant, there is still a full bar and they make a great Bloody Mary. The service is great. They do offer homemade, stick-to-your ribs type lunch specials too. Definitely worth the stop-wonderful family owned, local business.

PROS: awesome food, freshest seafood, family friendly
CONS: a bit pricey
