Don't do it. The dentist is ok and the person who cleaned my teeth was nice. The front desk is a group of people who have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING. We cannot get billed correctly. Even when I send them a letter clearly stating what is wrong. They are nice on the phone say they will call me back but don't and then send me another bill. I sent a letter and when I called they could not find any record of it. REALLY???

Find another dentist. This office is NOT worth the stress.

Reflection Dental has the best care I have ever had. Dr. Griffin is top notch and so is his staff.

I normally don't like to post comments, but seeing the negative comments from 2007-2009 called me to action.

Anonymous "Bob A" and so many others seem to not understand their insurance plans and feel like throwing the blame on Reflection Dental. And, just because you got a quicky exam somewhere else to get your "second opinion" does not mean it was correct.

Having been a patient of Dr. Griffin for years, I bet money your wife's mouth is as rotten as he said it was with FOUR, multi-sided cavities.

And, the billing issues left when Candace did.

Therefore a final word to Bob A. "Anonymous", your opinion is crap and I bet your wife's breath is too.

And, as a small business owner myself, it chaps my ass when people post due to their own ignorance.

Reflection Dental is as good as going to the Dentist can be.

I went to the Reflection Dental off of Little River Turnpike in Alexandria, VA, but I assume all Reflection Dentals work very similarly.

PROS: Extremely friendly and courteous staff; the dentist there is very personable and takes the effort to build rapport with patients. He is caring and has exceptional talent. When I had Delta Dental insurance, I had no issues like over-paying because they take participate in Delta Dental.

CONS: Very expensive. Make sure they participate in the dental insurance you have. They don't accept BCBS as I found out after my procedures. I had to pay about 50% of the total cost which ended up being $500 out of pocket, which I've never done before....Billing procedures are very confusing as you have to pay upfront in good faith what they estimate your insurance won't cover. Any procedure they offer you such as invisalite oral cancer screening or fluoride rinse cost extra which insurances usually don't cover - and they won't tell you unless you ask up front. I found out the hard way....so always ask if it is covered.

I would only recommend Reflection Dental if you have an insurance that they participate with. Otherwise, it may not be worth the time.

Reflection is a ripe off and very expensive!!! I recently went to have my teeth clean at Reflection. I was told to have oral cancer checkup using ViziLite. The cost was $80 and not cover by my insurance. The Hygienist told told me that my gum was inflame and needed deep cleaning. Hygienist reschedule me to come in for the deep cleaning.
I was not inform what the price were for the deep cleaning, until I went to my second appointment. The cost was over $700 which I need to pay out of pocket $400. I told the Hygienist that I am not going to pay that much for a cleaning. I told her that I never had to pay for any of my previous cleaning. She inform me that if I do just do the the clean and not apply antibiotics, it would be cheaper, because my insurance does not cover for antibiotic. I agree and and pay $94.80 for my deductible and 20% for my cleaning.
I recently received another bill from Reflection that I have a balance of $67.40. I review the billed and see that Reflection bill was $692 of which I need to pay $243 out of pocket.

I was a patient at Reflections for years under the care of Dr. Miller and I never experienced any of the billing problems that others have posted about. I feel the care is caring and competent. The reason I have changed dentists is the commute to their office in Alexandria has become intolerable for me thanks to D.C's infamous traffic. My one area of less than total satisfaction is it seemed in recent years there has been a different hygienist on every visit. I prefer more consistency, and I've now chosen a small practice where the dentist does his own cleanings.

My experience with the staff of Dr. Griffin was excellent. The hygenist explained what he was doing and made recommendations as to what "extras" I might want that my insurance might not cover. I was told up front what my insurance covers and what it did not. ( I have excellent insurance, so there are not too many things not covered). Dr. Griffin was very polite and courteous and listened to my comments. He did not lecture me on proper dental care, actucally he commented on how well my teeth had been taken care of. The whole visit was just wonderful. I would definitely recommend him to my friends, family and co-workers if they were looking for a great dentist office to receive treatment at.

I just wanted to say I was at Reflection Dental last Thursday and the staff and doctor are wonderful. Best care ever. I will be referring all my friends and family to this office. I just got a warm feeling from the first hello at the front desk to the warm hand shake from the doctor. I can not say it enough. Wonderful dental team.

I am sad to see that two other people have had the same experience with Reflection Dental that my wife and I had. We had one billing problem after another, and it took months of direct action and innumerable phone calls on my part to get things settled between our dental insurance provider and Reflection. What a nightmare! Candace even threatened to send us to collection if we didn't pay what she erroneously thought was our balance owed, even though we had paid $400 up front in good faith!

I wanted to post a follow-up to my original review today after my wife returned from her first checkup and prophylaxis with our new dentist, Hoffman Dental. Our former dentist in Richmond, VA said that my wife's teeth were fine and didn't have any cavities at all. Reflection Dental, under the professional care and supervision of Dr. Robert Griffin, said she had FOUR, multi-sided cavities that needed to be fixed. As you can imagine, multi-sided cavities are much more expensive to fill. Well, today (10/24/07), I am happy to say, Hoffman Dental said that my wife had ONE tooth that warranted watching, but didn't require treatment at present. This was more in-line with what our previous dentist said.

Therefore, a final word to the wise: with Reflection Dental, a second opinion is always a good idea!!

To the two recent anonymous posters, and to Bob A.,

I recently became aware of your posts and after reading them over several times, feel I owe you all an apology, both personally and on behalf of my team (really, everyone with a complaint deserves an apology, but your three comments have come while I??ve personally been leading the team at West End). To say we did not meet your expectations is clearly an understatement. In reading over your comments, it seems there were two over-arching frustrations. The first had to do with your interaction with our office relative to billing. The second was that I, personally, am more concerned about money than I am about treating patients well.

First, let me recognize that if that is the way you feel then clearly we did something to precipitate that perception.

Regarding the billing frustrations, let me just say we are working to rectify the problems you described. Dealing with insurance plans is not always easy. However, it is always our intention to be as clear as possible when dealing with treatment recommendations, planned procedures, and anticipated benefits as they relate to overall financial arrangements. It is our hope that before we do anything, you as a patient are clear as to both what we are going to do, and why we are going to do it. However, based on your experience, we obviously have room to improve, and I apologize that we were not clearer in each of your cases.

As for me personally, I simply feel bad that your perception is that I do not care. Or, perhaps more accurately stated, that you feel I care more about the wrong thing. While I realize this will most likely always be your perception, please know that we really are trying on a daily basis to do the right thing, for the right reason, at the right time. To you, having had the experiences that you have, that statement probably sounds both trite and perhaps even a little clich. But it really is true. I care deeply about both what I do and how I do it. I know the same can be said for my staff. I??m just sorry we were not able to convey that to you when we had the chance. That would ultimately be my responsibility. So again, because of that failure, I really do apologize.

Finally, let me I say thank-you. While we certainly enjoy hearing from patients that have been pleased with the services we provided, your comments have reminded us all that we can do, and be, better. And those kind of reminders tend to be more helpful in the long run than lots of pats of the back. So thanks.

Best Wishes to all,

Robert C. Griffin D.D.S.

I fully agree with the comments listed below, the dentist doesn't really seem to care about you and the billing is just plain miserable!

I too had procedures "slipped in" that insurance didn't cover. Candace in the billing department is just plain obnoxious and can never give you a straight answer on how much things cost. Additionally, they co-mingled my wife's and my account so it was impossible to tell what was really going on with the finances unless you were willing to cover it with her line by line, which she was reluctant to do.

They are money grubbing and not at all professional.

My husband and I have been fortunate in the past to receive excellent dental care from dentists who follow ethical business practices. Fortunately, now that we've moved to a new practice, we are again receiving service that I have come to expect.

Reflections Dental never was able to adequately explain their billing policies and reconcile the charges with the insurance company billing. In short, it seems that they intentionally distort the billing process as a revenue-generation strategy. We always seemed to pay more than what was quoted. They also would slip in procedures that we later found weren't covered by the insurance.

Furthermore, I never felt that the dentist was concerned with my comfort or treatment outcome. They are in it for the money, and it shows!

My wife and I were initially impressed with Reflection Dental's office on Duke Street. It was clean and professional looking, something that so many dental offices in upper Alexandria lack. We went in for our initial, new patient checks, and that's when the trouble started.

After the checkup, Candace, the office manager and billing specialist, tried to charge me $62 for an Invisilite Oral Cancer screening that she said "probably wouldn't be covered by Delta Dental." I told her that she should have informed be of that before the test, and I refused to pay. The charge was removed from my statement after several minutes of arguing about it. Then Candace proceeded to tell me that I need restorative work to fill groves that had formed in my teeth from years of over-brushing and to replace "old, worn" silver fillings with new white composite ones. I agreed that I needed the work done, and Candace setup appointments for the fillings. She then pre-charged me $400 to cover "the amount that I would owe after the insurance company pays." I had never done this in the past, but thought it wasn't to unreasonable, so I paid. BIG mistake! This is NOT common practice!

Next, I had a general cleaning. I was given a fluoride treatment at the end that Candace, once again, told me wasn't covered by my insurance and demanded $32. I again refused and the charge was removed. This time, Candace made me sign a paper stating that it was our responsibility to deny treatments before they were given. I agreed and said I would question everything that was done from this point forward.

After the fillings were done and the insurance paid their contracted amounts, it was determined that Reflection owed me $270. Instead, they only paid $190! That was the last straw. My family is now getting great dental care at Hoffman Dental Group on Brandon Ave in Springfield, and I am contemplating taking Reflection to Small Claims Court. At a minimum, I plan to file complaints with Delta Dental's Provider Relations Department, the Northern VA Dental Association, the State Department of Health, and the State Attorney General's office. If you have been mistreated, YOU SHOULD TO!

In summary, Reflection is only concerned with getting you to pay as much as possible for their standard services! Watch out for:
1. Charges for Invisilite Oral Cancer screening (Hoffman does this at no additional charge!) - $62.00!!
2. Charges for fluoride treatments after cleaning (again, included at Hoffman an no extra cost)
3. High-pressure pitches to have unnecessary work done.
4. Pressure to have old, but perfectly good fillings replaced with better looking white composites--at your expense!
5. Pre-charging for treatment that is only partially covered by insurance (again, this is NOT standard practice in MOST dental offices)
6. Attempts to have you replace fillings for purely cosmetic reasons. This practice borders on fraud and is driving up our health care costs!

I have been going to dentists regularly every six months my entire life (I'm 42 at present), and I have NEVER had this much trouble. These guys just want your money! Don't give it to them!

I spent countless (and I mean countless) hours trying to reconcile my bill with the insurance statements. It always seemed like I was overpaying. Renee in the LRT office is condescending and patronizing, insisting she was correct and I was wrong. With persistence, I prevailed. I no longer go to this practice.

I find it hard to believe that the managing partners are unaware of the extreme dis-satisfaction patients experience with billing. Perhaps the billing ?incompetence? is an intentional business strategy-for every patient that disputes a bill, probably 10 other patients just go ahead and pay it.

Also beware that the staff will ?sell? unnecessary products, treatments and procedures so that they can win a free trip. They insisted on selling me prescription products at full price which my insurance company would not reimburse when I could have had it filled at a pharmacy for a nominal co-pay. This is just one small example. My only regret is that it took a few years for me to catch on to their tactics.

This office has great dentists. Unfortunately, I have not been able to recommend this office to anyone because of the billing department. It is horrible!! They confuse you with constant incorrect bills, and random charges. I have been going for 2 years now, and not one flawless visit. They are terrible to deal with. Save yourself the headache.

PROS: Good dentists

This office is lovely, the location is good in relation to my home, and the staff is friendly. The dentists are qualified and do good work, low pain levels, great chair-side manner but their billing procedures are confusing and tend to end up costing me more in the long run than I think necessary.

PROS: nice people, good care, pleasant office,
CONS: lousy billing
