I thought this place was supposed to be really good!? When I called to order my cake I told the employee that we would have 25 ppl. When i picked the cake up it looked so small. I asked the guy working there how many ppl it served and he said 15! Huh? Why would they give me a cake that only served 15 when I said I had 25?!? So, I ended up paying extra to fix the problem by getting ANOTHER cake that didn't match but I had to feed all my guests. And to boot, the cake wasn't even good! VERY DRY! Walmart would of done a better job!

Today, I entered Sugar Plum for the first time in a couple of months. I've been on a diet, lol. My family and I have frequented this bakery for 20 years, and so I'm quite familiar with both their cakes (Mozart is always divine!) and their pastries, cookies, etc. We've made many custom orders for both entertaining and business purposes and have been satisfied 99.99 percent of the time. Anyway, I went to the pastry section straight away today as I had a craving for their famous, saucer-sized cinnamon buns with gobs of white icing. Unfortunately and much to my confusion and dismay, I quickly noticed that at least 75 percent of the selections were totally unfamiliar to me. Worse yet, the cinnamon buns that we'd all become so accustomed to (and addicted to...and the express purpose for my journey!) were gone! Oh, but wait. It gets even worse! The new buns were less than half the size and cost nearly as much as the old ones. Additionally, they looked nothing like the original, and instead of the usual gourmet-style, single serving presentation, they were still connected to their oven cousins as if somebody had simply dumped the baking pan/sheet of all its contents right onto the display tray and called it a day. Not very appealing.
And this doesn't even begin to describe the rest of the altered, transformed or otherwise missing selections (or the bizarre doughnut with bacon strips on top...and not in the chiller...I kid you not). Heck, I didn't even check out the cakes. I just bought a fritter and a water and headed out the door. Fast.
But before I bolted, I did make an inquiry as to what the heck had happened there. A nice, young newbie employee who at first strained to recognize my concerns soon spilled the beans: They had hired a new baker! Huh? I asked if the old baker had left? "No. We just hired a new one." So much for "tried and true," "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," etc. Sad news, indeed.

I agree with Kelsa M. We also ordered our wedding cake from Sugar Plum. It was agreed on to be done in a basketweave design on a three tiers of the cake. When we saw the cake at the reception, the cake was leaning and the basketweave design was very sloppy and inconsistent. We brought greenery to the bakery to be placed on the cake and it was left on the cake table instead. Our wedding was at th ocean front so the short trip should have not made the cake lean sideways. The cake was also dry.....very dry. We never complained directly to the bakery but wish now we had but would not use this bakery in the future.

Sugar Plum's cakes are amazing, no doubt about it, but the cookies and pies (and everything in that magic case) are so yummy too! I sometimes go on the website (great site, BTW) and just look around to decide what I am going to have when I get there. The staff is always nice and it smells like heaven...do yourself a favor and give them a try for your next party, event, or just a Saturday afternoon treat.

Pros: yellow cake to die for

Cons: who can pick just one sweet?

The cupcakes are my favorite, but Sugar Plum never disappoints! The cakes are always beautiful (almost too pretty to eat...almost) and so delicious. I have ordered custom cakes with everything from a photo of my daughter's Goth band crush for her sweet 16 to a skateboarding theme to a cowboy cake and they were all perfect. Whenever anyone sees the white box and purple logo you can see the anticipation of great things to come.
I have tried the other bakeries in town and always end up back at the best! Keep up the great work!

Let me start off by saying the review by Kelsa M. should have been kept to herself! Why would you try to travel with a wedding cake so far away? Of course it would be lopsided from such a long trip, and that was your fault not theirs!! I have been a fan of Sugar Plum for the last 10 years. My family has gotten all of their wedding cakes from Sugar Plum and everyone of them were perfect!! They will continue to receive all of my family's business for years to come.

I ordered our wedding cake a month in advance and paid for it in full. This bakery is one of the most expensive. Because it is a nonprofit organization and the bakery we have been going to for years we wanted them to make our wedding cake. We requested to pick up our $400.00 wedding cake two days before our wedding. We were told the cake would be ready at 9am but that we could pick up cake any time during the business hours. My fiance, now my husband, went to pick up the cake at 4 pm. He was told the cake person called in sick and they were behind on orders but that they were putting the finishing touches on our cake. One hour later they came out with our cake. The cake was supposed to be white, it was ivory, lopsided like a leaning tower, not smooth, layers were not centered, design was not uniform and looked sloppy, frosting looked like it was put on a warm cake and melted, there were crumbs in frosting and fingerprints. The cake platter we rented for $12 was nothing more than a piece of cardboard with fancy foil on it. Then they tried to tell him that we still owed on the cake which I had already paid. They knew that the cake had to travel 2 hours but still placed cake on a tray with no support or protection. The next day we got up at 6am traveled the 2 hours back with the cake. We were refunded our money immediately. The manager told us that our ticket was not pulled accidentally. The cake person decided to put our cake together in 1 hour and try to pass it off. Look I realize that mistakes happen. If the cake person had come out and explained what happened and guaranteed to get the cake to us on our wedding day we would have been annoyed but understanding. Instead my wedding cake that I paid a lot of money for was done in an hour and done poorly. I was lucky and found someone else to make my wedding cake. I highly encourage anyone considering this bakery for a wedding cake to look somewhere else.

Cons: Our wedding cake looked hideous!

Wow, what a wonderful bakery. On the advice of a friend we tried out this store and have been going back ever since. The baked goods are absolutely delicious, and they ahve everything you could possibly imagine. They will make different items for parties, or special cakes for all occassions. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they always try to get involved in different community events. Definitely a positive business from every aspect!

Sweet dreams are made from the Sugar Plum Bakery. Located on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, just when you thought you were resigned to supermarket bakery sections, here's a real-life, old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness real bakery!! The selections will knock you off your rear!! Sure it's a little pricey, but, hey, you get what you pay for. Besides, Sugar Plum hires and trains disabled folks so they certainly give something positive back to the community besides calories. Worth the trip.

This is one of the best bakeries you will find anywhere, not just in Virginia. One of the most unique and incredible things about this bakery is that the proceeds from the sales go to special needs children. They also employ special needs children and train them with job skills. The food they serve is amazing and best of all, during the holiday season they seem to have an endless supply of pies in every flavor you can think of. I highly recommend this bakery to everyone!
