I first moved to Charlottesville in 1995 and my vet in Florida referred me to Dr. Freedman. Dr. Freedman and his awesome staff took wonderful care of my dog, Petey until I moved again in 1998. In 2006 I returned to Charlottesville, this time bringing my 9 month old rescue puppy, Robbie. A few months later Robbie was injured and Dr. Freedman diagnosed his hip dysplasia. I was devastated. Fortunately, Dr. Freedman is an expert with dysplasia and he provided a comprehensive, proactive treatment plan, including changing his diet to Science Diet j/d with added glucosamine powder and a 3-part daily physical therapy routine to help me give Robbie the best possible quality of life. Years have passed, and as I write this, he's about to turn 8 this summer. He runs, jumps, plays, and "horses around" like any normal dog...you would never guess he has dysplasia. In fact, most people think he's only 2! I never imagined he would be able to be this happy, healthy, joyful, and -- so far -- pain-free. I feel so lucky that Dr. Freedman was our vet -- I am so grateful every day for the guidance and help he gave me. He is my hero, and I can never thank him enough!

EXCEPTIONAL. That is the word that I would use to describe Dr. Freedman and his staff. Our family has been using Dr.Freedman for our pet care for 9 years. His clinical skills, time taken with pet and owners, listening skills, supportive nature, and willingness to educate and train the owners are all exceptional. Dr.Freedman put down our beloved labrador of 11 years 2 years ago, and he could not have made it a better experience. The experience was naturally devastating and he was graceful, respectful of our wishes, supportive, and gracious. We just got a new puppy and would not dream of taking him to anyone but Dr. Freedman and his staff. His staff is extremely knowledgeable and willing to educate the owner. 5 STARS !

I cannot say enough nice things about the doctors and staff at this hospital. I brought my dog there last year when she continued having soreness and stiffness after two surgeries at another veterinarian. I had been told that my dog was just going to "have" chronic pain and there was little I could do about.
Dr.Freedman took lots of time to examine her thoroughly and couldn't believe that another doctor had operated on her twice and she was still so painful. He came up with a thorough treatment and rehabilitation plan that spanned over several months. I cannot express enough the relief I feel when I watch my dog running around without the limping and pain she had previously.
Every visit, I have been educated in detail about treatment options and costs and the staff always take good care of her. Having had this level of care, I will never consider anywhere else!

Dr. Freedman is the best! I have been visiting this practice for 20 years for a variety of needs-urgent care, well checks, puppy care, toenail clipping, surgery, and sadly euthanasia. My darling dogs have been there on a regular basis but I have also taken my daughter's cat and my mother's dog when they've been visiting and needed vet care. I've been happy to refer my friends and new area residents to this fine practice since I am confident they will have the wonderful experience I have had that over the years. Dr. Freedman and his staff provide the best care and concern for the pets and the owners and always follow up to see how things are going after each visit. Dr. Freedman is extremely skillful and well informed about veterinary health care and is kind and considerate of the owner's needs as well. He always does very thorough assessment of each problem and suggests treatments which are appropriate and rational. He is extremely accessible and responsive to my concerns and questions. I couldn't be more pleased with my experience with this wonderful practice.

I initially visited the AVHCC and Dr. Freedman for an orthopedic consultation for my high-flying, frisbee-loving Border Collie whose front limb had been bothering him for quite some time. To make a long story short, my previous vet told me Zeke had some random, (and as it turns out IMPOSSIBLE) problem that had no cure, while completely missing an obvious break that even MY untrained eye could spot in the x-rays! Thanks to Dr. Freedman's innovative pain management skills and the hospital's amazing technology, Zeke is a happy Border Collie again. I knew I was in the right place when the second Dr. Freedman saw Zeke, he was on the floor, loving on him, and calling him Puddin' Boy as if he was his own dog. Since that first consultation, I have transferred all 5 of my dogs' care into Dr. Freedman's capable hands. The other vet had even pressured me to euthanize my 9 year old Great Dane, claiming that he had a weak heart and lungs and bad hips. It seemed to me that he was quite healthy other than some stiffness and pain in his hind legs. Yet again, Dr. Freedman was able to see my dog and CORRECTLY diagnose the REAL problem. Now my Dane receives a combination of medication and injections for arthritis in his knees, and he clearly feels like a young man again! He is so much more active and has been able to regain strength in his legs with less pain. In fact, he is so happy and active now he's kind of a demanding pain in the butt. But, he's my HAPPY and HEALTHY pain in the butt and I love him! Now that I've seen the light, I can't imagine taking my furry family anywhere but AVHCC. Worth every penny!

My beloved cat had kidney failure. I first contacted Dr. Freedman about using Stem Cell Therapy to help improve my cats kidneys. Although there was every chance for him to do the stem cell therapy, he advised me against it in the most honest way I could have ever imagined. He explained that the research so far hadn't given the desired results, and even though we decided against it he has been my #1 go-to consult ever since. He brought my cat back from the brink when the local vets had written her off. It is SO hard to find a vet that will work with you, listen to you and explain things as thoroughly as you need; he has done that in every way! He doesn't hesitate to tell it like it is, even if it's not exactly what you want to hear, and he is kind and gentle about it. I live in Powhatan, over 1 hour away, and it is well worth the drive. My cat absolutely adores Dr. Carlson, she never purrs for any other vets. They are both extremely caring doctors and I highly recommend them to anyone in the area or out!

I was so lucky to have found Dr. Freedman at Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center! I rescued a dog (Cash) when he broke his leg and his current owner wanted to leave him at a shelter instead of taking him to the vet. 3 weeks after taking him to the vet near me and getting his leg set in a cast, it became clear that his leg was not healing and would require surgery. I live in Arlington, VA, had been unemployed for over six months at this point, and was getting quotes of about $3500 - $4000 in the Arlington area. Needless to say, I couldn't afford that! I called over 20 veterinarians in the surrounding areas, ranging from Pennsylvania down to North Carolina, looking for lower prices. By chance, I came across Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center and the minute Dr. Freedman called me back to discuss Cash's need for surgery, I knew I had found the right Vet. His prices saved me over $1000 (even with the 4 round trips I took to Charlottesville) but more importantly, the care that Cash received from Dr. Freedman and the rest of the staff was outstanding! Dr. Freedman was very thorough in explaining the orthopedic procedure required to fix Cash's leg and took the time to answer all of my questions. He was always responsive, both by phone and through email. One of the best aspects (for me) of having Dr. Freedman perform the surgery was that while Cash was healing, he was able and encouraged to keep moving and did not need to be crated! ALL of the other vets I spoke with had said that he would need to be crated for weeks after the surgery to restrict his movement. Not only was Cash able to walk around, but he also exceeded Dr. Freedman's expectations for healing time. I wish I lived closer to Charlottesville and could use Dr. Freedman as my full time vet but I won't hesitate to make the drive for any of Cash's future needs that require anything more than a check-up.

We began seeing Dr. Richard Freedman of Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center at the suggestion of a friend who has enjoyed his expert care of her pets for over 20 years. After 21 years at our previous veterinarian??s, we had become unhappy with the operation of the business, so decided to investigate our options. It was not an easy decision to leave.

After thorough research, starting by visiting the Internet sites of various veterinarians in town, I followed up by just appearing at their doors, armed with a list of questions. After evaluating the reception that I received at each facility, obtaining a general sense of the operation, and concluding with tours, we selected Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center, and I am so glad that we did. AVHCC offers the expertise found in larger operations with the personal attention found only in smaller practices.

Throughout their website you see statements that clearly convey their mission and their dedication to the best of veterinary care. For instance, Dr. Freedman??s webpage says: ??For me, veterinary medicine is not just a career??it??s a calling.? And Dr. Geri Carlson??s page notes that she wanted to be a veterinarian since she was 12 years old. Other sites could (and should) say this, but they do not.

And the dedication does not end with the doctors. Everyone on staff shows their commitment to providing the best. The long tenure of the staff is also impressive. One has to wonder about the quality of a business if revolving doors are the rule. But everyone at AVHCC has been with the center for about a decade, which speaks well of the organization and what it does.

Although we??ve been with Dr. Freedman for only a few months, we are impressed by his sincere regard for the care of our most important family members. He is expertly trained, well informed on the latest veterinary thinking and practice, and tells us what we need to know, whether we like to hear it or not, as any good doctor would.

We know that he and everyone at AVHCC truly does care about the welfare of our ??kids,? and we look forward to a long association with him and his team. We are confident that our most important family members are in the very best of hands.

Dr. Freedman was very patient and kind when dealing with both our cat and our family. He called on the weekend to explain in detail the procedures our cat would need. We would definitely use him again. We never had to wait long in the waiting room either.

When I moved to Charlottesville in May, 1981 with my Bichon, Anstuf, and two cats, Mattie Matilda and Oscar, the first thing I had to do was find a veterinarian. Someone at UVA recommended Albemarle Veterinary Hospital, and I immediately made an appointment. I have stayed with the practice for more than 29 years. Over that period, Richard Freedman and his staff have taken care of a wonderful pet parade of seven dogs and nine cats with great expertise, compassion and passion, always treating my pets with kindness, and understanding my own anxiety and fear when they were sick. I have complete faith and trust in the professionals there. My pets and I are welcomed with a smile. When they are sick or we have an emergency, my pets are treated as I would expect my family pediatrician to treat my children. I especially like two other things about Albemarle Veterinary Hospital: the veterinarians?? commitment to be up to date on current treatment methods and technology (e.g., stem cell treatments for arthritis); and their interest in taking on medical problems when the answers are not easy, and to refer the patient to a specialist colleague when that might be helpful. Those two things are the true mark of a professional. There is no doubt that Albemarle Veterinary Hospital provides a very high standard of care, and I will never go anywhere else.

We have 2 puppies who have received the best in quality care and attention from Dr. Freedman and staff. We appreciate all the thought and planning that has gone into making a vet visit a pleasant experience. First of all, the parking lot is in the shade, so no worries about those little paws burning on hot pavement and returning with your pet to a sun baked over heated car. You and your pet are greeted by name and they truly know who you are and all about who your pet is. The waiting room is very comfortable with plenty of room for you and your pet. They thoughtfully designed the flow pattern so that exiting pets are going out on one side while you wait on the other. The exam rooms are always spotless. The staff are excellent at making your dog feel welcome and work hard to overcome any anxiety they or you may have. Dr. Freedman is very prompt at seeing you and also sensitive to your dogs state of mind. Our puppies receive a very thorough exam and because of his skillful technique hardly know it was an exam. I find Dr. Freedman up to date with the latest research and treatments and willing to go the extra mile in finding answers to questions and concerns. One of mine was the testing of our Australian Shepherd for MDR1 (Mutliple Drug Resistance) which effects many herding breeds. The exam rooms are equiped with computers and his Tech. assistants record and make notes right then and there. Dr. Freedman will take the time to e-mail me with follow up info. from our appointment. His assistants then make the next appointment and handle payment for your visit...right then and there, in the exam room...no more fumbling with your purse and trying to manage a dog who wants to go home or run over to other patients waiting. Your on your way and you simply pick up your receipt at the desk on your way out. Again very insightful of Dr. Freedman and the making of a pleasant Vet experience.

As a side note: We did the puppy package, which saves you $$. This included a nice complimentary "dog bag" full of goodies like a cute snoopy bowl, a lead, samples, ect. A very nice touch.

The staff is kind and compassionate, for the most part. I would not recommend Dr. Freedman, or as long as you do not disagree with him, you should be golden. I discontinued taking my pets to him for a multiple of reasons, all of which are related to Dr. Freedman.

Our puppy Tater recently became a patient of Dr. Freedman's. My husband and I simply could not be more pleased with the service that we all receive at Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center. Tater has had 3 appointments so far (2 planned puppy check-ups, and one unexpected sick visit), and when we pull into the parking lot, he starts panting with excitement. He bounds into the waiting room where the lovely front desk staff showers him in love, hugs, and treats. He makes friends in the waiting room, and then happily prances back to his exam room when his name is called (off leash, leading the way, knowing that the nice tech will give him yet another treat when he gets there)!

Dr. Freedman takes ample time to listen to all of our questions and concerns, no matter how trivial they may be in reality. He doles out training information, breed specific tips right along with his health advice. Our puppy is clearly very comfortable being examined by Dr. Freedman, and we feel very comfortable with everyone in the office.

They really go the extra mile to make pets and their humans feel loved and well cared for.

5 stars all the way!

There are so many kind and wonderful anecdotes that I can share about Dr. Freedman and his amazing team. However, the most important one involves my basset hound. At 8 weeks old, Sophie started exhibiting signs of respiratory distress and lethargy. Little did I know that these symptoms were signs of a lethal viral infection in which most young puppies succumb (bordetella pneumonia). I can say without hesitation that Dr. Freedman saved Sophie??s life. Had I gone to another veterinary clinic in town, the cutting edge resources, knowledge, and patience so expertly applied would not have been received. Dr. Freedman was available after hours for verbal check-ups, questions, and general concerns. He cares about his animal patients, and develops meaningful relationships with his human clients. Additionally, Dr. Freedman KNOWS the latest and greatest information about new techniques, medications, and therapies. I always look forward to learning something new when I bring in my dogs for a visit.

Dr. Freedman sets the standard for excellence in animal wellness care!

At just three months old, our yellow lab puppy, Nelly, exhibited signs of non-specific left hind lameness and lethargy. Rather than a bundle of energy, Nelly seemed more like a tiny version of a creaky, arthritic 12 year old lab. Repeated visits to her vet resulted in the same examination and treatment ?? x-rays of her hips and elbows and twice daily doses of the anti-inflammatory Novox. After the third visit in as many months with the same diagnosis of Panosteitis and the opinion that ??she would grow out of it at adulthood,? I sought a second opinion.

I made an appointment with orthopedic and rehabilitation specialist Dr. Richard Freedman of Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center in Charlottesville. What a stroke of luck! Within minutes of his first examination of Nelly, I knew she was in good hands. Although in pain, Nelly gave Dr. Freedman her best doggy smile as though she knew he would help her. He localized the source of her discomfort after opting to x-ray her hocks when the x-rays of her hips and elbows again came out clear. He immediately diagnosed the source of her discomfort ?? OCD in the left hock. He recommended surgery the next week to remove the torn cartilage and bone spur that had caused her such discomfort followed by three months of home-based physical therapy (PT).

Among Dr. Freedman??s bag of tricks for PT included the portable Pulsed Signal Therapy (PST) machine. This suggestion was a no brainer based on the amazing success stories for joint rehabilitation in animals and humans in Europe. I??m waiting for the PST treatment to be approved on humans in the U.S. so I can use it on my knee! After just ten 30-minute treatments with the PST machine at home, Nelly presented no more limping or pain. She sailed through her remaining PT exercises over her three-month rehabilitation period with flying colors. As a result of Dr. Freedman??s thorough diagnosis, outstanding surgical skills, and state-of-the-art rehabilitation techniques, Nelly is back to the exuberant puppy we first brought home. She has gone from painful five minute walks around the yard to two hour hikes in the Blue Ridge!

Thank you Dr. Freedman for giving Nelly a new lease on life!!!

And as an addendum to this story, Nelly continues to be her exuberant self as a three year old dog thanks to the continued wonderful care provided by both Dr. Freedman and Dr. Vinson. As far as I am concerned, Albemarle Veterinary Health Clinic is the only game in town!

I've been a client of Dr Freedman's for quite a few years now - he and his staff gave me the gift of quality time with my Chesapeake Bay Retreiver who developed Lymphosarcoma. They were so up to date on the latest protocols and were so compassionate and caring that I had no doubt that they cared about Claire just as much as I. They have been more than a vet clinic, they have been family to our family of Chessies and have provided the best care and advice available anywhere. We are always welcomed, never rushed, and feel that our questions are welcomed and answers are always given in a manner we can understand. The follow up by both doctor and staff is exceptional - never will we take our pets anywhere else!

Dr. Freedman and his staff at Albemarle Veterinary Health Care Center are the BEST in treating and caring for animals and their owners, yes the owner also! For over 15 years, Dr. Freedman has been caring for my canine family members. I can??t express how impressed and grateful I am for the passion Dr. Freedman has in treating his patients and keeping up-to-date on the latest and upcoming medical treatments/procedures. His wealth of experience and knowledge along with innovative ways of treating his patients are second to none.

I currently have two 13+ old, chronically ill dogs, that without Dr. Freedman??s dedication to creating happy, healthy, quality lives for animals and his innovative approach to treatment would have resulted in them having very short, unhealthy lives . He and his staff have provided care that is above and beyond compared to other veterinary clinics I have dealt with in the area and Northern Virginia. The PERSONALIZED care I have received includes: taking whatever time is needed at patient visits to care for my dogs, thoroughly explaining both positive and negative issues impacting the health of my dogs, receiving patient care after normal veterinary hours, treating my dogs and giving recommendations for treatment as if he were the animal owner, and receiving emotional support.

I truly appreciate the e-mails and calls I receive following-up on how my dogs are doing during and after treatment. His staff is first class in providing outstanding customer service on the phone, e-mail and face-to-face. Other veterinarian practices should look to his practice as a model.

I can assure you his practice has state-of-the-art diagnostics and he has built a strong network of veterinarian resources across the country that he utilizes to provide the absolute BEST treatment for his patients. As long as I am a pet owner, Dr. Freedman is the veterinarian that I will trust to treat my animals and provide them with the best possible care!!!!

Dr. Freedman and the team at Albemarle Veterinary Health are by far my favorite veterinary care providers. I base this judgment on my experience with a variety of vets in the Northern Virginia area, and then my experience with Dr. Freedman since moving here in 2005. What I like most is the deliberate process in diagnosing a problem and the clear explanations that are offered regarding the problem and the range of treatments. The technical expertise and equipment in-house makes for speedy diagnostic results. If something has to be sent out, they always follow-up with the results in a timely fashion.

The practice is very tailored to meet (human) client needs, with extended hours on certain days of the week, an informative website and email reminders about appointments. I wish my family's healthcare was as well managed as this! From the front desk support to the vet technicians to the veterinarians, this operation is a class act. I recommend this practice to anyone I know who is looking for a vet, without hesitation.

I have to say this was the best experience I have ever had with animal health care! My 12 year old boy, Kama, became acutely ill with a fever of 105 and labored breathing and I had to take him into the overnight emergency vet. I am a physician (human) as well and was allowed to see my cat's xrays and lab work. I was told that my cat was unlikely to make it even through the night as he had significant lung and heart failure. Not being satisfied with this diagnosis (and not having a vet in town), I called my friend who said there was only one man for the job and that was Dr. Richard Freedman. Boy was she right! I picked my boy up bright and early and met him at his office. He did further lab work and xrays, told me he thought my cat's biggest problem was that he had pneumonia and that the heart failure was minor and secondary. While my cat's case was difficult, I felt immediately comfortable with his diagnostic skills! He also had a great bedside manner with my cat and I could tell that he had every intention of doing what was right for my boy. In addition, the staff were caring and attentive and the environment was impeccable. Further, he has top of the line diagnostics in his office and doesn't hesitate to recommend referral to specialists if needed. He discussed my cat's case with many of his colleagues around the country to assure he was doing everything right for my cat. I am not sure we as humans always get this degree of care! He's also very straightforward and takes the time to talk to you personally about your pet. After many days, antibiotics, a feeding tube, and a home visit (because I didn't want to upset him by taking him in the car again), Kama is almost completely back to normal! He's drinking, eating, and hiding in various and assundry places to attack my girl as she unknowingly walks by. If you have a pet, this is the place to be! I wouldn't even think about going anywhere else!

My dog Biscuit and I are forever grateful to Dr. Freedman and his staff. Biscuit had both knees operated on last October (TTA Surgery) and the results were nothing short of amazing. I could not have wished for a better outcome. I brought in a dog who could not walk without limping and who spent most of his time trying desperately to keep up with his dog "brothers". What I got after visiting Dr. Freedman was a dog who can run like the wind after squirrels and easily hop up on the bed for an evening snuggle. Dr. Freedman took the time to answer all of my questions and to address my concerns. His staff is well-trained, caring and compassionate. I live in Fredericksburg, VA and drive 1 1/2 hours each way to appointments because I KNOW my furry family is getting the best care available--and I wouldn't trade that for anything!

Their client service is extraordinary. The caring starts with the front desk personnel. The vets and techs demonstrate listening skills, and actually care about what I have to say. They will research anything that they don't know. They are always trying to be current. They offer some advanced services that other local vets don't, so I didn't have to travel when my dog needed surgery. The vets told me there are some things they don't do. They are very honest, and communicate well. I got what i paid for and more.
I would highly recommend them.

I've never met a veterinarian that takes more time to educate me about my Great Dane. He is even willing to say "I don't know the answer to that, but I'll find out." And because this clinic is so high tech, they can access information at the touch of a mouse right in the exam room! His dedication to continuing education, state of the art care, and his gentle compassion have sold me that this hospital sets the standard for veterinary care!

I have been taking my pets to see Dr. Freedman for 10 years now and both my cat and dog get excellent care there. They take a pro-active approach to vet care that has saved me hundreds of dollars in the long run. The staff is warm and friendly and very knowledgeable and the facility is always clean.

We moved here 3 years ago, and started seeing Dr. Freedman for our pets. He has always been kind and compassionate in the handling and care of my pets. He and his entire staff are experienced and very knowledgeable. This clinic has all the modern technology you would expect to find in a larger city, but has managed to maintain the "small town" atmosphere. My dog is diabetic and until we moved here, was unable to be regulated on his insulin. Now, 3 years later, he has been on a level dose and doing great! I recommend this facility for top notch care and an experienced staff.
