We just stayed here for a long Valentine weekend getaway. This is a special B&B. Not over-the-top fancy, but appropriatel for the historical nature of the homes - The place is actually made up of the original historic house and homes that the family brought there to save them destruction. Our room was in the Ladysmith house. The James Allen is nicely situated on the second floor with views of the gardens and barnyard menagarie - I loved the ducks and geese. We began our visit with the special tour the family offers on Saturdays - We got to go into all of the houses and the tour concluded with champagne! Nearby Charles City Tavern was recommended by the innkeepers, and it was an excellent choice. When we returned we had a beautiful fire warming our room. The next day a farm bell welcomed us and our fellow guests to breakfast in the main house. I could not have imagined a more special Valentine's Day,.

We wanted a weekend getaway not far from home and found Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation. This landmark historic property is located a short drive off Route 5 (The James River Plantation Road) a short drive west of Williamsburg. The property is actually a collection of historic buildings, one from the eighteenth century that has always been there, and four others that the family who owns the place moved there to save them from demolition - It's really like a little historic village complete with gardens, pool and nature trail.

The guest rooms are nice and spacious with antiques, and don't have lots of clutter like many B&Bs. If you love history this is the place. The rooms also have pictures of the restoration by the family and lots of maps and artifacts about the history of the plantation. Joan welcomed us with yummy hot toddies. We took advantage of a special event tour and dinner they offer. The four-course dinner and four-house tour was presented by Joan's son and daughter-in-law. That evening we returned to our room to find turn-down with the warmth and glow of a real wood fire. We were really lucky on our stay as we woke to find all of Piney Grove covered with a dusting of snow. We loved Joan's breakfast dish, and she does share recipes.

Our visit was a great getaway, but visitors wanting to experience the history of Virginia must include a stay at Piney Grove. We can't wait to return in the summer to enjoy the pool!

My husband and I stopped here on our way back from Williamsburg one afternoon and it wasn't what I expected at all. They have a self-pay walking tour, or you can stay as a guest at the B and B. Not really a plantation to tour per se. Nice enough walk though. Pretty grounds.
