My wife and I have lived in Portsmouth over ten years and we went tonight for dinner for fathers day. We have had some very good meals at this restaurant over the years, but for the last few years not so much. Tonight was the last straw. My wife ordered a stuffed pepper that came like a big lump on a plate with cheese over it. The pepper was cooked well beyond submission to the point it was a soggy lump. She was hesitant to accept it when it was served but took it anyway. The server who was very nice insisted that they come out that way all the time. I know better, I've cooked stuffed peppers myself and they always stay in one piece till served. To top it off, it had a tomato based sauce which had an odd flavor.

My dish was a little better, the
Saurbraten. The food was OK, but the presentation was lousy, on a small lunch plate and the portions were pretty minimal. The cost of the entree was 15 bucks so it wasn't cheap, especially by P-town standards.

The problem with this restaurant is that back in the day when Mom and Pop were running it, it was a pretty tight ship and the food and service were consistent and good. They have since retired and the kids or some other people have taken over and the bottom line is the bottom line, not the quality of the food or service. The server took off a small percentage for my wife's dinner, but it is not worth it to go back to this place. Shame, it WAS a nice place to eat.

The food here is good, especially for a restaurant known for it's beer. The beer selection is excellent, prices are good. It's a fun locals' hangout at night. Highly recommended.

They have an absolutely fantastic selection of beers on tap. The selection changes regularly so stop in often. I the summer the outdoor seating is the best.

The food is good but I'm not big on German dishes but the beer is loved by my husband! Some of the beers are good to me but my husband is the one who loves imports!

A good small area to enjoy with friends and family.

The Bier Garden is not a particularly noticeable restaurant and bar on High Street. It features inside and outside dining and has a dining room for smokers. The food is very good, but the beer is even better. Very fun place to sit outside on summer evenings.
