I'm not sure where the "lack of personality" comments are coming from. Murky Coffee (formerly Common Grounds) seems to be the epicenter of Clarendon's hipster culture. If sports bars are you top choice for hanging out, it might not be your cup of tea (no pun intended), but for the hipster kids out there, it's the only place for coffee.

Contrary to previous posts, there usually *is* interesting art up on the walls from local artists, there is a palpable ambience (in particular, the music is unbeatable. Indie kids, eat your heart out!), and they DO have ice tea, at all times.

The food selection isn't bad either. Some evenings they've sold out of pastries, but in the morning their shelves are full of delectables. In addition, the coffee is well made, the drinks are also delicious, you can get everything iced... and don't miss their Classic Cappuccino. It's the best cappuccino I've ever had.

And, as an added bonus, the baristas are generally great "eye candy" ;)

PROS: good ambience, great coffee, social center
CONS: bathrooms can be a little dirty

Common Grounds is a coffee shop on Wilson Boulevard between the Clarendon and Ballston metro stops. This shop brews a decent cup of coffee. I usually only visit this shop in the summer to have a cup of coffee outside on their patio while taking advantage of their free Wi-Fi access. The staff is friendly and their prices are reasonable. Overall it is an average coffee shop. I have no problems with this establishment but they also dont do anything noteworthy.

When this place was Common Grounds...it was world class...great hip coffee shop...a place where people knew your name. Ever since Murky Coffee took over, it has gone down hill. Where shall I start...barely friendly staff...not even making much of an effort to interrupt their conversations...let alone serve you. There is a inconsistently, unexplainable off and on showing of bagels. The only other food involves danish only. There is no real food. There is no lemon for the tea and certainly no iced tea. How crazy is that. The only bonus is the free wi-fi. However, even that is not worth the trip anymore. The place is two blocks walk west of the Clarendon Metro. I long for the old days of Common Grounds!

I just kept thinking while I was sipping my coffee in Common Grounds, that there is so much more that they can do to this place. Located in North Arlington, Common Grounds looks like a little house. It has a front room with a bunch of tables and the coffee counter and a back room with comfy couches so you can relax and enjoy your beverage. But it's just missing personality. They need to bring in some cooler couches, some funky artwork, or just spruce up the place with a colorful, new a paint-job. They need something to make this place unique. Because the coffee just isnt that good to keep me coming back. But I maybe I'm alone in my feelings. Common Grounds is always chock-full of young folk on their laptops, typing away at what appears to be college assignments. So I guess the lack of creativity doesnt bother them.
