Big Wheel Bikes the best shop I have ever been to. It is not your usual uniform bike shop that only sells Treks and Specialized, it's an interesting shop with cool and helpful people as its employees. As soon as I stepped foot in the door one of the mechanics greeted me and asked if I needed help with anything. I had a very specific question that I wasn't expecting to have answered when I first walked in the door , but Bennet , the manager of the shop was able to answer it right away. This is the only bike shop Iw would go to in DC and the only bike shop I would recommend to anybody in DC

I bought a couple of new tires and tubes from these guys who were able to take care of me. They were attentive and had in stock what I was looking for; however, I believe I paid just a little under double of what it should have cost me if I went to another bike shop (such as Performance).

All in all, good guys, good shop, but you are going to pay for their convince and knowledge

The bikes they rent at big wheel are new Marin, Fuji bikes,my husband and I just rented this week.
Very nice working condition, well kept bikes with very good service, the guys are good looking and seem willing to help anyone.
They provided locks, helmets and a map.
Dana, you obviously had a personal issue against them concerning your over night rentals and sounds as if you are a very spite full and angry man who may need therapy.
Do you have the same experience wherever you go?

The manager and staff were extremely polite and patient in helping to select bicycles for me and my wife. Prices were very reasonable. Since our purchases, I have been back to the shop with questions and minor adjustment requests; all work was performed immediately and competently. The staff is enthusiastic about kids, bikes and pets, so the shop is a friendly place to stop by on a ride to Mt. Vernon. I would highly recommend Big Wheel Bikes in Alexandria to anyone in the market for a new or used bike.

I purchased a bike from them recently and they bent over backwards to get me fitted and explain the service package that was included free with the bike.
The bike was already tuned up and ready to go when I bought it so I did not have to wait around long,I just got on the bike and rode out the door!
I Highly recommend this shop!

Once upon a time I went to the nice and clean and spotless bike shops that plague the DC metro area... And I kind of liked it; but then I went to Big Wheel Bikes in Old Town Alexandria. This place is what a bike shop should be. I spent my youth hanging out at bike shops and learning simple tricks the mechanics used to do menial tasks such as take off grips (Who would have though a compressor could be so useful) and always loved cycling... Time passed and I got caught up in the "cycle" (Pun intended) and before I knew it I was a police officer. Not just any police officer but head of the bicycle unit... This is about as good as it gets. I have always ridden but never been in a shop that impressed me to the extent that this one did. Granted it may be dirty (not really) and a bit small but these guys know what they are doing! Everytime I go in that store one of the mechanics jumps to his feet to make sure to help me with whatever may be wrong... Even if I am just trying to hang out. The few good men that staff this shop know bikes and what they are doing with them... This is the reason why all my departments bikes are serviced here. A++

I purchased a hybrid Marin from these guys earlier this month and the bike was rolling perfectly....they were a little busy at the time but even still explained everything to me about their service plan.
I also was just "handed the bike" but with the intention of bringing it back when need be for service, which I have since done for free ajustments.
Im not sure what the fellow here is complaining about with this location, why don't you just take it back to them and see what they are all about?
these guys are very polite and courteous,I am extremely happy with the service provided.

Bright yellow shop in old town, I have been a longstanding customer with them for years and this is the only shop I will have service my Litespeed.
They are always willing to drop whatever they are doing to help me out and are excellent mechanics.
I cannot imagine receiving anything other than respect from these gentlemen.
they sell new high end and family bikes and always have a rentals of HIGH quality around.
I support my local shop 100%

DO NOT rent from Big Wheel Bikes - that is unless you actually enjoy being harassed, threatened and berated while paying an enormous amount for a rag tag yard sale rental bike that was probably purchased from a police auction. My wife and I rented two bikes from this store last weekend. We picked this store for two reasons, the web site looked professional and this location was close to our hotel. The ensuing experience is one I would not recommend to anyone. There are MAJOR problems here beginning with their rental fleet. Their website would leave one to believe that they have a nice rental fleet with plenty of choices. Wrong - we arrived before they opened and watched as they rolled out numerous bikes that had seen their better days. They were dirty, poorly maintained (we had to ask them to put air in the tires) and in general, looked more like stolen yard sale bikes than a rental fleet.

Their website mentions daily, weekly and monthly rentals with a fee for keeping the bikes overnight if you wish. After we picked out the cream of their disparate fleet we began asking about overnight fees, as we wanted to keep them for a couple of days. The salesman was ignoring us and failed to ask us when we would be returning them or how long we expected to keep them. Nor did he instruct us to return them that evening (or anytime). The salesman wanted to keep my wife's drivers license as a deposit. I suggested a credit card instead. When we pulled out our cards, the salesman said, "That one's fine." We both informed him that particular card was a gift card and not really a credit card. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "That's okay." By the way, it's worth noting that with an overnight fee included, one of their ??fine? (sarc) bikes will set you back $45 for a 24 hour period.

It seemed that no instruction or information was being offered. Instead it was left up to us to ask about trail locations, and any details that we might need to know. No flat kit or lock was offered or available.

48 hours later, I turned on my phone (I was on vacation) to find 10 messages. They ranged from "Please return the bikes" to "We've called the police. What kind of people are you, stealing our bikes?" and the "The manager just charged me $800 and I can't afford it man!"

While I don't like being threatened with a warrant for my arrest, I called the store employee who had left his cell number in his message (the store had not opened yet). I explained to him that we had not stolen the bikes.

On our way to return the bikes, I decided that I was going to voice my opinion about the lack of service on their part, the threats that were directed at us, and the general failure of their employee to fill out a proper rental agreement.

While I thought they would apologize for the misunderstanding and perhaps give us a discount or something on the bikes, what my wife and I received was immediate defensiveness, verbal abuse and threats. They had reported us to the Police as well. I agreed with the manager that our rental looked shady on paper, but the blame should be solely on the employee who took the reservation, failed to ask about the rental period and knowingly hand selected a gift card as a form of deposit. While the manager agreed (I think) the personal attacks kept coming. The manager is filled with impudence and disrespect for his customers. He fails to realize that it's people like me who, for reasons of convenience, spend $180 renting two crappy bikes for two days, keeping him employed.

I did find other rental choices. Just north of Old Town at a marina off of the Mount Vernon Trail is a place that rents nice, newer, clean and well maintained GT hybrids for $22 a day. In retrospect, I wish I would have bought a couple of $150 department store bikes and a patch kit and left them with our friends in DC. Or better yet, perhaps I should start my own rental fleet with them, right across the street of Big Wheel Bikes in Old Town.

I purchased a used bike from this shop and it was a great purchase. The staff was helpful and friendly and very knowledgable. The bike was in good shape and was a reasonable price. They are located in Old Town Alexandria, so very conveneient to the bike trial there also. Kind of a small, older shop....but a great place to go to get a great used bike!

This place offers the best service one could ask for when shopping for or renting a bike. The staff is knowledgeable and are willing to help their customers for whatever is needed. From anwering question to cycling novices, to helping out the local bike-messengers, the folks at Big Wheel Bikes know what they're doing. They have small selection of bikes for sale, but they all seem to be of high quality. The prices are not bad either, especially for rentals when compared to others in the area.

Parking may be an issue as it is located in Old Town Alexandria. So either park in a paid garage or spend some time finding some street parking.
