We have a 2001 Nissan Sentra that was in need of servicing. It squealed when starting, made knocking sounds during turns, and the A/C blew hot air. We decided it couldn't hurt to find out the damage as far as repairs go and began searching for a mechanic.
I narrowed my choices down to two mechanics in Woodbridge, Virginia. On top of the list, based on the reviews I had read, was Stan Rollison's Automotive Service. I was both intrigued and skeptical when I saw that Stan's shop had no negative reviews. Despite the lack of negative reviews I decided to give Stan's a try.
Stan Rollison, himself, greeted us at the reception desk with a smile, a handshake and had a very pleasant demeanor. My husband told Stan about the issues with the car and that we were debating whether or not to bother with repairs or just buy a new car. My husband told him he normally recharges the A/C with a Freon Charging Kit and it lasts from about June to August. Stan commented that if that works and we are looking to get a new car in the near future then continue to do that to save money. My husband then told him about the knocking noise when he turns and the problem with the squeal. Stan gave us a few possible causes for the squeal and assured us he would find the cause for the knocking sound. We handed Stan the keys and he assured us nothing would be done without our prior approval and we would hear from him before day's end on the recommended repairs. Not once did Stan try to push any (un)necessary services or diagnose and quote cost outright without even looking at the car.
True to his word, we received a call from Stan within a few hours with a diagnosis, cost and time frame for repairs. He outlined, in clear detail, what needed to be fixed. My husband told Stan that he had taken the Sentra to have to the serpentine belt replaced at a gas station and it began to squeal not long after. Stan advised we take the car back to the gas station, mention the squeal and they should replace it for free adding that is what his shop would do in that case. He also explained, in detail, what was causing the knocking noise, and the 'walking out the door' cost. I had a number in mind before I even began my search for a mechanic that was my pain threshold and the number Stan quoted me was below it by more than half. Based on the issue and repairs that Stan recommended the price seemed more than reasonable and he promised to have the car ready the next day. I mentioned Stan's recommendations to my husband and because the cost was so low he decided to go ahead let Stan replace the belt and recharge the A/C. After asking for the belt replacement and A/C charge the price went up a very reasonable increment. I was still at less than half of my pain threshold and more importantly, I didn't feel nickeled and dimed for overpriced, unnecessary repairs. I also felt when it came time to pay, the 'walking out the door' price I was quoted would be what was on the final bill. We told Stan to go ahead with the repairs and we were promised we would get a phone call the next day when we could pick up our car.
We received a call from Stan around 1030 the next morning letting us know that our vehicle was ready. When we walked into the reception area Stan, again, greeted us with a smile and a cheerful hello. He explained all the repairs that had been done in terms that were easy to understand and handed us the bill with the exact repairs agreed upon and the 'walking out the door' price quoted over the phone. No fuss, no high pressure sale of frivolous repairs, just a simple explanation and a bill for an affordable repair.
I shudder to think how much I would have been charged had I not found Stan's shop online. We've gone to other mechanics for far less and been charged grossly inflated prices for what turned out to be simple repairs. I'll admit, despite all the positive reviews, I had my hackles up and was ready to walk right back out the door at the first sign of deception when I walked into Stan's shop, but he put our minds at ease with his straightforwardness and reassurance that we would be well taken care of. The fact that he recommended we continue to use the A/C recharge kit to save money and ask the gas station to replace the belt for free showed us he was not concerned with piling on repairs and costs. I've been to mechanics where you get the feeling they are trying to get you for all they can in one visit and never mind if you ever come back. I didn't get that feeling with Stan. He doesn't just want your money today; he wants your business from now on.
As Stan stood to shake our hands after handing us the keys he asked how we heard about him. We mentioned that we 'Googled' reliable mechanics in Woodbridge, Virginia and read his reviews. I told him I couldn't find a negative review about him on the web. Stan's face broke into a proud smile, "I must have got it right after all these years." Yes Stan, I'd say you have.

My wife and I have had our cars repaired for over 40 years in many places. We moved to Woodbridge in 2000 and found Stan by word of mouth. He is everything the first two reviews stated plus honest and trustworthy beyond expectation. Since 2000 he has cared for our old cars and the new 2002 and 2005 cars and done a wonderful job dealing with routine and some seriously complicated issues. I would not take our cars anywhere else and consider my wife and I lucky to have found Stan and his team. We have not had a better automotive repair experience for the value offered. Gary Boycan

First of all, I prefer to support local small businesses. I won't if the service or product isn't up to snuff, however. I really like Stan for a number of reasons, primarily for his friendliness and availability. I have rarely needed to make an appointment to get in. It is as simple as a phone call and a drop off. He has no shuttle service, but of course you pay for that anyway at most dealers through higher prices. More often than not, I rent a car anyway and Enterprise will pick you up and let you drop the car with Stan which is about as easy as it can get. Stan's shop can handle just about any repair in a single day. I've never felt like he was doing unnecessary repairs and at times he has given me the real story on what a dealer's service shop was trying to get away with. I have one criticism, however. There have been a number of times that I have had to take my car back to get some minor adjustments made. More often than not, they appear to me to be things that should have been caught by his technicians before the car was returned to me. That said, Stan has always rectified the problem with no questions asked. Granted it makes for an extra inconvenience, but the piece of mind I get from knowing (as best I can) that only necessary repairs are being made makes up for the occasional return trip.

I have gone here a few times for repairs on our two cars. Stan works the front desk and seems honest. He explains things well. I felt that I was dealt with fairly. The work was done right and on time. Pricing was comparable with similar type garages in the area...definitely less than the dealer. My main problem is that it is a distance from my home (it's just off of Rt.1), and they do not provide a shuttle service or a courtesy car. There are no other businesses in the area that I am interested in. They do have a waiting area with a TV, but it seems my repairs take about 5 hrs. or longer. You can drop-off the night before, but that is a lot of extra running around for my husband and I.
