I graduated from this school 15 years ago and now my kids are in this school and I have to say that this school has declined greatly. It is unfortunate because there are good teachers in this school that truly care about the success of their students and work hard to help them, but they are few in number. This school has several dishonest administrators, principals, teachers, security officers and even the law enforcement officers. I am not going to name any names but please do not be quick to believe what you are told and do not give them the benefit of the doubt. Hayfield targets kids and mistreats them to a degree beyond comprehension. My advice is to stay involved with your kids any their studies and document everything that occurs to ensure fair treatment and success. This school is not recommended but if you have no other choice as I do get to know your teachers and show them that you are involved and do not tolerate any injustice or nonsense. These teachers have lost their passion for teaching and only seem to care about a paycheck than teaching.

My friend told me about what goes on at Hayfield. He moved and transferred to South County. He said that there were kids selling condoms in the bathrooms and drug dealers selling drugs. I also read about a gang initiation at Hayfield in the bathrooms, the same happened at South County but South County has improved over time. The staff doesn't care and they don't do anything about it. Like Briana S. said the kids smoke outside school and they skip class and go to McDonald's to hang out and the teachers don't do anything to solve these problems Hayfield has. It's ridiculous! Let me say this not one middle, high, or secondary school in Fairfax County Public Schools has a problem with either gangs or drugs.

To the person below me...Kelly S. or whatever. So you would not want any decent person going to this school? Well I attended Hayfield for middle school and high school and I turned out great, and I am a decent person...better than decent. I am now an Army officer with a BA in Political Science. The teachers are great and the counselors are too. Yea, there are some bad apples there, but they are everywhere. There is no escaping it. It is the child's decision on whether they want to be that bad apple or not. The teachers do care, and no there is not a whole bunch of fighting and making out in the hallways...when I was there, that was stopped if it was seen. Teacher's and staff cannot be everywhere all the time, so yes some kids may get away with some things but best believe is an adult spotted it...it was handled the best way possible. You cannot say that students will be a bad influence, because like i stated before, it is up to that child to let people influence them, and if they are easily influenced then maybe there is a slight parenting problem. Who knows? To, Briana S...I think your child is over exaggerating some things...unless stuff has really changed since i been there and i graduated in 2004. Maybe your child got linked up with some bad teachers, but most of them teach...and teach well, and if someone needed extra help, they would stay after school and help them. I know I needed help and I got it. But the child cant be afraid to ask for help either...I had to learn that also. Whatever happens off school grounds and at parties, that does not have to do with the school, its parents not keeping an eye on their kids....yea there is drama in Hayfield....but it happens in every school...even private schools...so don't knock one school because of some bad eggs here and there...EVERY SCHOOL HAS IT!!!

I'm shocked to hear what goes on there. There are many fights and other bad things that go on without any teacher supervision. The students there will badly influence any new student. This is a school that I would never want any decent person going to.

I'm the parent of a 8th grader there. I started my daughter there in 7th grade. I thought this would be a great school but from what my daughters telling me I'm am shocked. There where over 10 fights, on and off, school grounds. That is not including the other grades and there are many fights there too. The teachers don't teach them they just tell them to copy the problems from the board. Everyday my daughter would tell me what happens at school that day. She told me that everyday a kid will be crying. She went to her friend's parties at their homes. She told me they would be making-out and grinding with boys and no parental supervision. I think that the high school aged kids have a bad influence on the middle school aged kids. She told that kids even make-out and have fights in the hall ways and never get in to trouble. She said that kids carry condoms in their pockets and they would be smoking outside the school. The kids also listen to their ipods in class and skip class to go to McDonald's across the street. The kids also wear make-up and very provocative clothing. Yes this school has more and more drama and issues every year and the teachers dodn't even know about it.

Hayfield Secondary is usually seen as a school with a bad reputation, but actually is in the top 300 public schools in the country. The school has just been renovated and is doing well. Most of the teachers are great while some aren't. The school does have an AP program, but not an IB program. The counselors do a great job at helping you to prepare for your years after graduation.

Hayfield is a decent school and is often under-rated. I attended this school for middle school and high school. It recently finished a renovation and the school has improved over the years. The student population is highly diverse and the teachers are mostly good. The school offers the AP program but no IB.
