As a previous employee of Petland's Roanoke franchise, I can say that, like any business, they are not perfect. However, that does not make them a horrible, villainous establishment.

First, quite a few of the puppies came from local breeders when I was working there. Not mills, mind you, but small, independent breeders. I've never understood the immediate assumption that any pet store selling puppies must obviously be using or supporting puppy mills.

For those naysayers out there, no, that doesn't mean every single Petland franchise operates in the same way. A franchise is only as good as its owner and how they choose to run their individual stores. Mr. Perdue is, like any business owner, very profit-minded, but he doesn't allow that to get in the way of trying to make sure all of the animals are cared for.

The difficulty lies in maintaining a consistent number of long-term, trained employees. As previous department management at both Petland and a family-run pet store in Lynchburg, let me emphasize that pet stores have an above average turn over rate. Quite a few people want to work with all of the cute animals or work within their hobby (for reptile and fish enthusiasts), but only a handful can handle the amount of work that goes into maintaining a pet store.

That's the biggest problem, really. But, honestly, it helps if customers provide some leniency to stores where newer employees are concerned. Constant complaints and aggression will only serve to exacerbate the turn over rates. If you want any local pet store to improve and maintain a high level of service, you have to play your part in the process.

For my experience, certainly, I had some issues when working at Petland. I managed the Fish and Reptile departments... and I have a particular way of doing things and constantly pressured Mr. Perdue to upgrade or renovate both departments. Had I exercised greater patience instead of making it a point of contention, I may have had better success.

So, to conclude, if you have problems with your local pet store, don't go passive-aggressively go posting complaints online. Take them to the store management in a calm and measured fashion. Believe me, it will net better results and have a better chance to affect any changes.

Petland is the most sick place to get a puppy. They get their dogs from puppy mills and kitten mills. I bet these reviews are fake so people would actually buy them. Stop these mills. I bet there are fakers making these reviews.

First off, Petland's prices are high because they are a franchise, but with Club Pet the prices are just as much as everywhere else. They're puppies do not come from puppy mills, the company that Petland uses to order they're puppies has the humane society audit the breeders several times a year. The Store gets mopped in the mornings and in the evenings. The roaches come from the food bins, and the customers that come in the store bring roach eggs in on them. The puppies are cared for. They get checked over several times a day. They are all brought out to play each day also. If there was to be a sick animal, they are kept in the back in isolation so that the sickness is not able to spread to other animals. Noone there would ever sell a sick animal, if it was to get sick, maybe its the environment that the customer who bought the animal took it into makes the animal get stressed out and get sick. The bedding is scooped in the morning, the cages and glass is cleaned with a safe non-toxic cleaner, and the bedding is replaced with clean bedding every morning, as well as they are feed before the store opens and before the store closes. The sales associates are really great there and know what they are talking about, and there is no need to bad mouth Wendy, she knows what is best for the animals, whats best for the store, and is a great manager. You can think what you want to think about the store, but until you get your facts straight, There is no need to talk all the trash on here that y'all do. If you want to go the Nature's Emporium, that fine, you ask the young girls a question about any animal and they give you a blank stare as they know nothing about animals they just get hired to stand there and goof off. If you want to go to Petco, they have no place to put their sick animals, if they die, they die right in the cage in front of you. And Petsmart, its a shame when they're animals get out they cant catch them, and the do not care if someone else's dog craps in the floor, they wait for someone to roll over it or step in it.

You people make me sick, I am so tired of hearing about how bad Petland is because they get their dog's from puppy mills. To be honest with you all I DONT CARE. The staff at petland was amazingly helpful from the second I walked in the door until I left, and they have been extremely helpful with the adoption of my new puppy. If you don't like the store then don't go there, no one makes you buy food from them, you all act like petland is the only pet store in Roanoke. Furthermore if you breed cavaliers and you are such a great breeder then why are you looking at cavaliers in the pet store, kind of contradicting yourself there. I mean since you had the intention of buying food, you were going to spend money, which further supports Petland which apparently has no knowledge and is ignorant. I really do not care where my puppy comes from as long as he is healthy, and he is treated right. We have a lot bigger problems to worry about right now other than puppy mills, for christ sake the whole country is falling apart and you people are more worried about puppy mills. You all definitely need to wake up you worry about things that aren't any concern of yours, move on with your lives.

Ohh you people know nothing!!! Petland cares for their animals! they give them ALOT of attention and they are very knowledgeable about the pets that they have. they clean their cages EVERY MORNING! and i mean they take out all of the bedding spray the cage down and wipe it and put new bedding in the cages. They feed and water the animals EVERY NIGHT! Yeah so what their dogs are expensive! do you know how much the vet bills are there? do you know what brand food they need the puppies? did you know that they microchip every puppy. Its not cheap! if you want to be a cheap skate go to a breeder. If you dont like the store dont go there! simple! every single time i have ever ever visted the store i have always been waited on quickly. Also yes their dog food is expensive but you get better nicer service there. On top of that the store has always been clean. Did you ever stop to think that the reason they have roaches is because all of the pet food. you are an idiot and i am insulted by this!

You should be praying for the employees at petland for they just lost their general manager.

First of all, this store is disgusting. The only reason I have ever gone in there is to simply entertain the sad looking animals. All of the puppies are jammed into small cages with hard mats underneath them. Not to mention the floors of their cages are always covered in their own feces. It is absolutely gross.Their birds are so stressed out. All of their small animals are put into open glass cages by the dozen. While I was in there multiple children come by and swing the ferrets on themselves, obviously hurting them. Their fish department, although large, is extremely dirty. Their floors look as if they haven't been mopped in weeks. For a specific example of their incompetent employees listen to this story. When I was seventeen years old, I went in to entertain some animals with my 18 year old boyfriend. And while playing with a Italian greyhound, she was constantly telling us the price and how nice he was. I was 17 years old! How was i supposed to buy a dog. My boyfriend even said we were not interested, but the woman wouldn't give up.Anyway, this was longer than expected. But just a few miles down the road is a much nicer pet store, Nature's Emporium. They don't sell dogs (go to the spca or a local breeder, it's much more humane) but they do have a lot of supplies (like dog food, treats, clothes, fish supplies, etc). They also sell small animals like rabbits, ferrets, reptiles, finches, and kittens.

Do not buy a puppy from this pet store! These puppies ARE from puppy mills! They have a puppy called a PUGLE that has it's ribs showing and looks like it hasn't been fed in weeks! When asked what is wrong with it they declare that there is no problem! Most dogs that are healthy aren't thin as a rail with every rib sticking out! When you ask for information about the parents of the puppies you are told only thier colors and nothing else. Not only are their dogs priced in the thousands, but most have runny noses and limited information. While looking at a puppy priced around $1600 a HUGE roach climbed down the wall beside my childs head! With thier prices as high as they are you would think they could at least afford an exterminator! To carry on, there are bird cages along one wall that are filthy dirty with roaches everywhere. Some of the staff appear to be knowledgeable, but there are others whom show know knowledge. I overheard one individual who appeared to be a manager (a female) berating an employee over a something they said to a customer and the employee was almost in tears. I found this to be very unprofessional. I would not recommend this store to ANYONE! Their large birds were about as stressed out as their employees and the store appeared very dirty! I recommend doing a great deal of research about this store before purchasing anything! Buyer beware!

I stopped by Petland as it was the 1st pet store in 15 miles from my home. (I later learned another 8 miles or so I could get to PetSmart, a store that helps find homes for SPCA and rescue animals). Petland had about 20 "full breed" and "hybrid" puppies behind glass, with not a single toy for them to play with. One was chewing up it's hard plastic floor mat, others were lying on the wire bottoms of the cages as there was nothing soft for them to lie on. I asked one person if she was aware of puppy mills and that it's that type breeder that will sell though pet stores. She replied that all their breeders were approved by the Petland stores. What does that mean? Anything to so with the ridiculous FDCA approval ratings? They are charging in the thousands for these little pups, some obviously not feeling well; one I held had the sniffles pretty bad.
I'm still in shock; I thought petstores were about out of the puppy selling trade after all the information came out on true puppy mill horrors.

The staff seems completely ignorant of an animal's needs. They will happily sell you a small parrot and a parakeet cage to put it in. When looking at a prospective pet, purchasers should be given accurate information so that they can make an informed choice... not one that will end up with the animal being abandoned or neglected. The birds they have have NO toys to play with and are simply learning to bite and scream from frustration. Attempting to have a knowledgeable conversation with management or informing customers yourself is met with blatant hostility. I will NOT be returning. There are too many knowledgeable and caring pet stores in the area to choose from... and most have better prices.

I went in this store about three years ago and saw a puppy that looked a lot like my dog that had recently passed away due to old age. I talked to Wendy and asked her if I paid cash on the spot what was the best she could do on price? She said they could'nt reduce the price at all. I left the store and after thinking about it, I decided I should not get that puppy because it wasn't going to take the place of my former dog no matter how similar they looked. I knew it was'nt the right dog for me at that time. I decided to rescue a dog from the spca. Several months later I needed some supplies and went back to the store. Wendy came up to me and told me how much they had marked the puppy down and that I could take her home for $$$ dollars. It really proved to me that its all about the money...not about finding the puppies good homes. Aside from the puppy sales, I have walked out of this store two times because you can't get checked out at the register. If they are going to charge double, atleast have enough staff to check you out. The only reason I tried shopping here is because it is close to where I live...but I could have went to Petsmart quicker and saved money. If you need pet supplies, go somewhere else!

I went in to grab some kibbles. Saw the pups looked and asked if they had a Cavalier . I had passed by the Cavalier pup and didn't even realize it was a Cavalier. Draw your own conclusions. I raise Cavaliers and know the breed. Contact me for more info on buying a Cavalier King Chas Spaniel. There are several helpful websites I can refer you to about the history and standards for a quality cavalier king chas spaniel contact me : cav_5king@yahoo.com
Agreed, I felt the staff was rude and basically ignored me. The prices for dog items seemed unreasonable so I just grabbed a small bag of food and left. I was out of puppy kibbles and had to have a bag.

The store is filthy, the staff is nasty and they sell puppy mill puppies. Petsmart has the selection of goods at a good price and don't have to use cute little puppies to lure you into their clean, well-lit, well-stocked store.

I do not recommend this store for pet accessories as the prices are much higher than other pet supply stores. I also do not recommend them for their pets. They sell sick pets and do not want to honor their return policy on if a pet dies within seven days.
Steer clear of Wendy if you do decide to buy something from this store.

I do not recommend Petland as a place to shop.
Their pet supplies are much higher than that of their competitors.
They do have a large selection of animals, but I would not recommend buying a dog from them. After buying two dogs that have had numerous medical problems, I decided never to enter their store again!
Some of the staff are nice, but the manager is not!

This is a good place to go for pet supplies or even to get a pet. The prices are a little high, but the quality of the products are very good. Looking at all the products that they have gives you plenty to choose from no matter what pet you have.
