I only get my hair cut and colored here. I love the atmosphere of IMAGO. The ladies are friendly and not stuffy. I have for 30 something years not been able to find someone who knew what to do with my hair. I used to hate curly hair.

They treat customers terribly! Also, their stylists go for smoke breaks while your hair is drying and then come back and set your hair... disgusting!!

Wonderful salon! MaryJo was the best! She worked with me to find the perfect haircut and I can honestly say that I received the best haircut of my life! The other staff members were helpful and gave me really helpful tips. I have straight hair and I recommend Imago for any hair type.

This place located in the Fan off West Main is definitely NOT the best place for naturally curly hair. I made my appointment for the very first time, they rescheduled twice. I had to be proactive myself about making sure they were going to be there? ODD.\n\nIt is very very small, so you have to squeeze into the rooms which are overfilled. The owner Mary Jo seems stressed and talks way too fast and too much. She cut my hair dry, and it was lopsided and not shaped at all. You are pushed through the little maze quickly, and it is stressed. Not to mention, I had my work attire on which is very professional, and no cover is used. I had hair all over my suit and clothes???? STRANGE. And by the way, VERY OVERPRICED for this lack of talent.\n\nThey they push some products which did not work at all for me. When I called to get the haircut corrected, Mary Jo seems not interested and actually replys, ""well, I do not want to inconvenience my clients with appointments"". She has no interest in correcting her work or making things right. \n\nNot a place I would ever recommend for anyone no matter what style of hair. And the claim of naturally curly specialist is definitely not an established right. YY SALON just down the block corrected the entire haircut and IS full of talented polite people!

As a curly girl I know about the awful salon experiences we are subjected to most of the time. We all know the stylist that decides to give you layers.. ( HORRIBLE IDEA) when you have soo much volume its overhwleming... or the stylist who simply wants to give you a chemical treatment to straighten your hair.. and then it doesn't work... \nWe have all spent countless hours and lots of $$$ first for the stylist that doesn't know what they are doing and then more $$ to correct what they have done! Once we find a stylist that knows our hair we cling to them for dear life... I have found certain individuals that have been good with my hair but never someone who truly knows all about the complexities of curly hair.... until now... The IMAGO salon team especially my stylist...Mary Munden :) \n\nI am new to the Richmond area and I had been hooked onto the Deva Curl products (amazing ) before moving here. Once here I googled deva curl salon in richmond VA and IMAGO came up. I decided to give them a try and now I will NEVER GO ANYWHERE ELSE! I thought I was above most curly girls knowing the Deva but my lovely stylist Mary Munden opened my eyes to so much more! \n\nI used to not embrace my curls because I didn't know what to do with all of them! Now I love my curls! \n\nIMAGO is a great salon with a great staff and great services. Since it is such a popular place they seem to always be busy, but they are always attentive to their customers and provide EVERYONE with a quality hair experience. They take their time with each curly or straight cut to give their customers what they want...who can complain about that! \n

As with any curly haired individual knows, finding the right stylist is harder than finding the right person to marry. I have had my fair share of horrible hair cuts, where I leave with a big frizzy mess and the stylist is sooo happy with the job they did (ARE THEY BLIND). I have had the big poof, I have had the dreaded triangle from hell down my back, I came close to having a mullet with bangs that went wrong. So finding a new stylist is very stressful because you never know what you are getting. \r\n\r\nI recently went to Imago salon for the 1st time. I had a hairdresser I trusted and who did a wonderful job at another salon, but I she was the only one at the salon who knew how to cut curly hair and that worried me that if she left, then I would have no one. So I decided to give Imago a try. I heard a lot about them on the radio ads and decided why not. The reviews were good. \r\n\r\nFirst off, this is the 1st salon I have been to where they weren

I honestly hate getting my haircut, because of so many butcher jobs I have had. I am mixed in heritage and my hair texture is very fine and curly, I also have tons of hair! I read other reviews and booked an appointment, and it was the best thing I could have ever done for my hair!\n\nThe staff was friendly and extremely approachable. Jessica, my stylist was super engaging and awesome. She is also a very informative stylist, she can tell you just about everything there is to know about curly hair, from everyday maintenance to little tricks to keep your hair looking amazing. I never felt more impressed then when she completely revamped my hair! I wanted to kiss myself in the mirror my hair looked so awesome!\n\nNot only are the stylist great but the hair products are to die for. I have now switched all my products to water based and my hair is starting to look and feel amazing. \n\nI suggest if you are in the richmond area and need a holy orgasm hair experience you book an appointment right now! You will not regret it!\n\n\n\n

I stumbled upon an article on Imago Salon last year when they were featured in Elle Magazine as one of the top 100 salons. Mary Jo immediately struck me as a pretty incredible stylist and owner who is focused on giving her clients the best service and educating them on hair care so we look our best in between visits. I've never had my hair cut dry, and was amazed at how much better this technique was ~ just get out of the shower and go and looks great! So all in all I have really loved my hair cuts! I don't usually color my hair, and did have a little ""glitch"" late this summer. But Mary Jo was very patient in working to make it better ~ which to me is the true sign of a professional as there will always be times when things don't go quite right. So the moral of the story is I would NEVER have gone back had I not been impressed with her skills ~ and she's just a really great person to boot! Last week I walked out with a FABULOUS new shorter, fun ""do"" ~ and have my appointments booked through February so I'm sure to get on Mary Jo's calendar! Thanks to Mary Jo and all the ""Fun"" Imago staff!

Ok, I seriously thought I knew everything I needed to know about curly hair. I knew the good products, not to blow dry, not to brush, etc. etc. etc. I was SCHOOLED! But in a good way. May hair looks the best it EVER has and that's due to Jessica. I even left a really good stylist for her...sh! Don't tell! I get so many compliments on my cut. Had her color it as well and feel super sassy again. And the products? OH MY! The best ever and cheaper than what I was even using before for even MORE product and it's BETTER! See my girl Jessica. She's DA BOMB!

I found Mary Jo and Imago Salon 10 years ago. I have been more pleased with my cut and color each year. Mary Jo and her great staff are often going to NY to undergo training in the the latest cut design and color techniques. Mary Jo always explains what she is doing and why..especially if I suggest something that will not work for my face shape or hair texture. The whole salon has a warm, contemporary feel, filled with staff who sincerely seem to enjoy themselves as well as making their clients happy. \nmarti

I always thought I had a ""good"" haircut but now I know what ""great"" is. Mary Jo is amazing at cutting hair. Casey did my highlights and they are just as amazing. I don't think I've ever been happier w/ the results. Bravo Imago!

I went to Shae because I wanted a total transformation, and she gave me EXACTLY what I wanted. I've been to several great stylists across the country, so I am pretty hard to please. It took being deeply disappointed in a few stylists before I found her, and I will never go to another stylist as long as I'm in Richmond. She took her time and seemed like an artist at work while she did my cut. I had a few things I wanted her to compensate for (hairline and the back of my head is flat), and she handled it with ease where others have failed miserably. She is quite obviously extremely talented, and I would recommend her to anyone I love!!

I see Casey at Imago and my hair has never looked betternot to mention how soft and silky it feels! Casey listens to what I want and actually hears me she is simply the best at what she does. \r\n\r\nMary Jo (the owner) is committed to customer service and has created a fun atmosphere in a very professional salon. A job well done by Mary Jo and everyone at Imago! I cant recommend this salon highly enough! \r\n

Imago came recommended to me by one of Richmond's elite bartenders that always has the most fabulous hair! I walked in on a Friday afternoon with no appointment hoping I would be in luck of a highlight and cut... I was celebrating my birthday that night and wanted to look as good as I felt about that!! I was greeted with smiles and enthusiasm, I filled out their info. sheet and was greeted by my new stylist Shae! She took my ideas and the pics I had brought with me and rolled with them giving me great advice and her own touch. She did an icy blonde partial highlight, a toner rinse with a Kimberly Caldwell/ texturized shorter cut and styled it with a dryer, a flat iron and Davines Wonder Wax which took no time! She told me the cut we were going with would be easy to work with and take no time to style on my own... and you always like to believe that because stylist always have the magical touch that I never seem to find especially when I am running late for whatever buuuuuuut Shae was Totally Right!!! This may be the easiest hairstyle that only brings great complements from people that I never even expected them from and that always makes me feel SO Good!!!! I am Totally stoked to make my next appointment with Shae for my latest idea!

I've stuggled with my curls my entire life and kept my hair short so I wouldn't have to deal with the frizz. I moved to Richmond eight years ago, and have tried countless salons. None of the stylislist I tried really knew how to cut and style curly hair. \r\n\r\nThen I was introduced to Imago Salon about a year ago and my curls have been transformed. My hair is longer than it's ever been and I have defined, soft, bouncy curls. I go back once a month to have my roots touched up, I've had highlights and other treatments and I have always been delighted with the results. I love the products the salon uses as they are all natural and developed for curly hair. All of the stylists know exactly which products you should use for your hair type. I learned so much about curly hair from these folks. I now wash my hair as if it was a fine cashmere sweater. \r\n\r\nAll of the stylists are knowledgeable about all of the trends and continue to go for up-to-the-minute training in NYC. I usually go to Casey but would trust any of the stylists with my hair. If you have curly hair, you must try this salon. You will not be disappointed.

My boss years ago recommended that I go to MaryJo to get my hair cut. Since high school I had tried out a variety of salons: Christopher John (is that still around?), Salon del Sol, and Nesbit among others and they could NEVER cut my hair the way I wanted it to be cut, even though they claimed they could cut curly hair. BS. Until I discovered the Devachan Salon up in NYC...trucked on up on the Chinatown Express 1AM bus...real cheap-like cuz I knew the haircut was probably going to incredibly expensive...which it was $250. BUT it was AMAZiNG. FiNALLY I got the style I had always imagined. NOW the great thing is Mary Jo and everyone else are certified by this very salon!! But will cut your hair for a third of the price!\r\n\r\nI'm not sure why there are a couple of horrid reviews on here because I've only ever had a great experience at IMAGO Salon. and I love the pups if they are still there!! \r\n\r\nAnd Casey, is great with color! (if she's still there...I was travelling abroad for the year.) And now I live in Boston. AND I will still fly down to get my hair cut at this marvelous salon. Mary Jo always does an INCREDiBLE job on my hair. I don't know what I would do without her.

I was referred to Imago by a friend because I needed hair repair :) Now I wouldn't trust my curls to any one else. Congrats to Mary Jo and the everyone at Imago for being named top 100 salons by Elle magazine!!! You deserve it. \n\nIts great, they even have a mascot named Peanut (a little Yorkie) so cute and friendly. \n\nWhen you walk in the door you feel welcome instantly. When you leave you know you have a great cut and color too.

I moved here over 10 years ago from NYC. I have had one good curly hair dresser in that time, but she disappeared. So I was desperate to find a sympathetic soul for curly hair! And was excited to hear about Imago.\n\nTo start, I waited a long time. But the assistant told/showed me some info that I found useful. When Mary Jo was ready for me, she seemed a bit put out and rushed - and was interacting with customers who came in after me, while snipping away my hair.\nI had asked for my hair to be only trimmed - that I wanted the same look / style as I came in with, but just shorter. I am a rock musician and have always kept my hair curly in spite of the trends toward straightness. People have often complimented my hair for its curls and style. I found it interesting that in a curly-hair salon both the owner and the assistant wore their hair straight! \n\nAnyway, my hair was cut into a style that was only appropriate for a woman 30 years older than myself. I was dumbfounded and horrified. And when I expressed my confusion and dismay, they did say to come back and they would work on it, but I decided to trust my husband to work on it instead (and he's not a hair dresser!). Being that far off base - more than anyone had been ever - I would never go back to Imago.\n\nI found there to be a lack of listening and interest on the part of Mary Jo, as a stylist. And when I saw that many of her customers coming into the salon after me WERE in their 70's or older, I understood that she was giving me their hair style! I had to use a hat for many weeks, I couldn't even pull it back into a pony tail.\n\nCurly hair is certainly a specialty - and a complex and difficult one. I don't know where to recommend - but it is, unfortunately, not here.

I transferred from LA and was scared to go to just any salon. I went to Imago after reading the rave reviews on City Search. I dont care what I spend; having fantastic hair is what matters most. If my hair looks great, I feel great. After my visit to Imago Im not feeling so great. Im very disappointed all around; I waited 35 minutes to sit in Mary Jos chair, she seamed annoyed that I wanted something different other than what she suggested. When I said that I was unhappy, she suggested I go elsewhere! Boy, I didnt need that advice, Ill never go back. My mistake: rave reviews / only 10 most likely written by someone on the payroll.

If I had the money to pay for gas every 5-6 weeks to drive to Richmond to get my hair done by Mary Jo, I would. When I lived in Richmond, I wouldn't let anyone else touch my hair! She developed a style just for me but also listened to my likes and dislikes. Mary Jo's staff is excellent and I've become good friends with all of them!

Casey is AMAZING! IMAGO is AMAZING! I just had my curly, frizzy, out of control hair cut for the first time in 2 long years. (The last person who cut it, they murdered it.) I sat down in the chair, scared that I was going to walk out with another horrible hair cut. Casey really went out of her way to make me comfortable with everything that she was doing and she listened to what I wanted my hair to do. She took her time and taught me how to care for my curly hair. When it came time for her to start cutting she cut one curl at a time and made sure that my hair was dry so it was not any shorter than what I really wanted. ( something that had never happened before) After she had cut off the dead damaged hair she did a conditioning to it and taught me how to wash and care for my hair on a daily basis. I am 29 years old and I have never known how to treat my curls, until today! She taught me how to style it with out it taking more than 5 min. (see time is a big factor for me... I have 3 small kids at home) Two hours later I was walking out with the most BEAUTIFUL hair of my life. My hair has never looked so alive and controlled ( keep in mind controlled with out the aid of heavy gels, spays and such.) IMAGO has got a customer for life! The price of the hair cut is well worth it! The hair I walked out of the salon with is PRICELESS! My family is amazed at how beautiful my hair is. Thank you so much Casey. You have given me the gift of beautiful controlled curls that I have always wanted. I will be recommending IMAGO and Casey to everyone I know.. Straight or Curly! THANK YOU IMAGO! THANK YOU CASEY! You have a customer for life!

Well then Imago is the place for you - I attended the Hair Blowing 101 class this past weekend and it was awesome. My friend and I had an hour with a dedicated stylist (I had Mary Jo) to help us learn the tips and style methods to help us get that same style we love at the salon. I have always struggled with getting the same look and now I have the knowledge to make it happen. The class was hands on and personalized for each person. My friend was more into learning new styles for her straight hair - and she loves the new ideas and has used them this week. I also get my hair done at Imago and love it! This is the one stop salon for awesome hair styles, great color and a friendly and relaxing atmosphere.

I'm almost 28 and I've never been able to get a cute haircut until I found Imago! Mary Jo is fantastic and knows how to tame wild curly hair. She was trained by Lorraine Massey who wrote the book ""Curly Girl"" and she really knows what she's doing. Stephanie taught me how to style it and everything has been great! This is a dream come true. LaTesha and John are also able to help with any other styling needs. This is the best place in the world curly girls and with the best atmosphere! Go there learn to love your curls! You will not be disappointed. :)

Mary Jo is a fantastic hairstylist - she listened, she offered advice and she delivered. I specifically went to her for my curly hair, which, if you have curly hair, you KNOW how important it is to find someone who knows what they're doing. Mary Jo has trained with Lorraine Massey, author of the ""Curly Girl"" book. She also uses the DevaCurl line of products that Lorraine helped to develop. I actually found the salon through the DevaCurl website's salon finder.\r\n\r\nThe Imago salon was uniquely modern, yet, not stuffy or pretentious at all. They only service a few customers at a time, so, you will not feel like you're in a hair factory or feel intimidated by other people looking at you getting your hair done. The entire staff was extremely friendly - as they each introduced themselves to me. And, they even had a couple of cute little yorkshire terriers running around to greet me too.\r\n\r\nI love my haircut, and, I'm looking forward to my next one!

Pros: curly hair pro, relaxed atmosphere, professional

Cons: must book far into advance; however, sometimes you might get lucky like I did probably because someone cancelled.

Mary Jo and John are fantastic. I have to agree with the above ""hair hospital"" statement. I went in there reddish/blonde with a bowl cut...ha. I came out...with a rich dark brown color and a very sophistocated cut/style. They have helped me with the ""growing out"" process and I still get compliments! I love going in there because i leave feeling beautiful. There isn't one bad thing I could ever say about Imago! They are awesome!

They should really re-name themselves The Hair Hospital. Dr. John is genuinely concerned with the health of your hair (free chemistry lesson with every color), Mary Jo's cuts are surgically precise and designed to enhance your natural features, LaTesha's scalp massages will melt you, and, if you are still not feeling great after all of that, therapy dogs Peanut and Beau will go to work on you. I moved to Richmond 18 months ago and spent the first year working my way through most of the salons here before I finally found Imago. As much as I would love to keep this place a secret, the word is already out and you will need to book your appointment 2-3 weeks in advance (the wait is well worth it). You can also get on their e-mail list to get notifications of last minute openings.

I have been going to MaryJo for almost 2 years now. Before going to her I never went to the same place twice & just about never got compliments on my hair. Since having MaryJo cut it, I get compliments a few times a week & even strangers stop me in stores to compliment it or ask where I get it cut. She is really great at helping you find what works best with your hair, face & personality. The staff is all incredibly friendly & down-to-earth as well. Always a great time & a great haircut. Worth waiting however long you need to in order to get an appointment!

Mary Jo's been cutting my hair for four years, and it's as if she can read my mind. When I'm ready for a change, she's one step ahead and gives me a cut that's completely flattering and easy to style at home. I carry Imago's cards in my purse because I get stopped at least 4 times a week by women asking who does my hair. My husband now goes to John. His hair is really difficult to stylishly cut because it's very thick and full, and John gives him a great cut. John's a great colorist, too; though I don't get my hair colored, my best friend does, and John talked her out of highlights for the first six months she went to him - he wanted her current color to grow out and her hair to get healthy again before he touched it. Not many colorists show that kind of restraint and honesty! Imago's become the salon frequented by several actresses in town because we always get perfect cuts there. Mary Jo is constantly travelling to NY for classes, and always brings back new techniques that improve my cuts. And I ALWAYS have a blast when I'm there. Love those guys!

Cons: They're so good and popular that making an appointment weeks in advance is mandatory now
