My child has been taking classes here for a while due to a desire to get a black belt. The teachers under Master Kim are fine, but to be honest Master Kim is a very angry, pompous man, who knows very little about how to treat people.

I've seen him be very unkind too, to some of the children. He plays favorites, usually brown-nosing the kids from affluent families with connections. It is sad though because he knows very little about the psychological needs of children and, at times, uses shame and other negative techniques that simply are not acceptable ways to treat kids. He is a bully of parents too. No one wants to stand up to him because he is intimidating and very difficult to get along with---he also uses the "language barrier", when it is convenient to him. It's quite obvious.

He always talks about people respecting him, but doesn't know how to show respect to others, unless you have connections to people he wants to connect with. It's pretty clear, his focus is money and has no love of kids or teaching. He should have retired a very long time ago, but again stays in it for the money.

DO NOT SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE!!!! He will try to lock you into the longest contract possible, usually a three year contract, which you are unable to cancel for ANY reason (except moving). I've witnessed many parents asking for their money back because the child didn't want to take the lessons anymore, or they can't stand Kim's attitude. Usually the rich parents just put up with him taking there money by auto withdrawal, when their kids lose interest, or for some other reason. Most adults cannot commit to a three year gym contract, but master Kim convinces you that your child will get all these benefits, get into an Ivy League college because of all the discipline they will gain and just love TKD! You see the little ones start and they are so excited....then they get bored, etc....get sick of dealing with Kim's nasty angry ways--many kids are afraid of him-- and their parents force them to come because of the contract. It's really sad to watch actually.

The belt tests aren't serious either, just ways for Kim to get his pound of flesh from you. The kids, or most of them, don't deserve advancement. It's like, show up and "you get a belt, and you get a belt"---except unlike having fun at the Oprah show, you have to sit through many hours in an over-crowded, hot room, listening to Master Kim go on and on and on and on about how wonderful he is, while the parents stifle their gags and roll their eyes at each other. Being a part of this TKD circle is to put up with Kim, a very hard thing to do, but again people do it to get that kudo for the kids. Trust me, there are much better ways to find enrichment in this area, with a whole lot less grief. As soon as I can get out of the contract, I'll be gone like the wind and put this negative experience behind us!

Great experience with the instruction as well as with Master Kim. His staff have been great for my two children. Master Kim was very helpful with going through the contract process as well as the black belt program.
