Awesome place. I have bought 15 trees of all varieties from Blue Mount and have had them all installed by Blue Mount. Additionally I have bought 8 Xmas trees and plenty of plants and shrubs. The staff is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and always available for technical support including questions on watering, leaf condition, and landscaping. I can honesty say this place is the best nursey in northern Virginia and I know them all.

I have been going to Bluemount since they opened and always found them to be great. I am sorely disappointed today though. I bought my Christmas tree from them, told them I was alone and needed the tree cut shorter so I could move it myself and asked them to be sure to drill it well for the tree stand.

I managed to get it in the house and found they had only drilled the tree ONE inch deep. I could not get it on the stand, my drill was too weak to drill it. I called to ask for someone to drill it since I am only 1.5 miles from the nursery. Manager said no one could come. Said couldn't I get a neighbor to do it, I don't have a neighbor I can ask to do this, he insisted he could not send anyone, I hung up in tears. My first Christmas alone in many years, so depressed, bought the tree hoping to feel a bit better. Way to show the Christmas spirit Bluemount.

Great nursery. But, I don't think I've ever been greeted or heard a nice thing out of any employees mouth, so don't go to Bluemont regularly.

I had been a good customer of Blue Mount for 8 years, purchasing numerous perennials, annuals and pots from them. I WAS a good customer until yesterday. In late July I had purchased a very large fern, pot and potting soil. I had noticed that there were some yellow leaves, which they said came from too much sun (sunburn) from the greenhouse, but that the plant had lots of new growth and would be fine. Based on their assurances, I took it home, repotted according to their directions, and noticed over the next 6 weeks that leaves dropped daily (which I attributed to being the "sunburned" leaves). Yesterday, I noticed that there were white bugs crawling all over it and more leaves on the ground. I called immediately and told them the condition of the plant and that I no longer had my receipt. They put the manager on the phone and he told me "we don't have a return policy on houseplants". I told him that there was no way the plant got the bugs at my house, because none of the plants in my house have any bugs - just this fern and that they had to have come in with the plant. I described what I purchased that day, and the day of my subsequent visit one week later. I also reminded him of how long I had been a good customer of Blue Mount - he said that he didn't remember me (??? do you remember every person who comes into your establishment???). He told me to bring the plant in so he could see if the plant was one of his. I asked how he could tell - he said by the pot. I hauled the plant down to Blue Mount. He came out to my car and looked at it and told me that it had mealy bugs, and "if I had my receipt, I could read where it says that there are no returns on house plants". I asked why he would have me haul this heavy plant to his shop "so he could identify the plant as one of his" when he was not going to exchange the plant for a healthy one after seeing that there was a problem? He told me that he never said he would take it back; BUT, he could recommend something I could purchase that would help kill the mealy bugs. I told him that I didn't want to spend more money curing a plant that they sold me that was infected and that if I had not been mislead into thinking they were going to exchange the plant, I would have just thrown it out at home. So, he asked, what are you going to do with it - I told him that he could just throw it out here - then he pulled it out of the pot and just walked away and said absolutely nothing! AFTER 8 YEARS OF BUSINESS!!! I will be making my future plant purchases elsewhere. A place like this does not deserve my business or any referrals. I hope after reading all the reviews on this site, you go elsewhere, too! BTW - I agree with everyone that the turnstile is absolutely ridiculous!

We purchased a large amount of shrubbery and trees from Blue Mount Nursery to landscape our back yard. Within that large purchase were four (4) arborvitae topiaries. Upon delivery, the delivery person dumped the entire order in our driveway. When asked whether he could put the trees and flowers in the back yard, he replied, ??How much are you willing to tip me?? Distressed I told him to leave everything where it was, in the driveway.

The next day, we planted all the plants and shrubs in our yard. Everything was planted and treated in the same manner. Of the 4 arborvitae topiaries, 3 are thriving. However, within 2 weeks the fourth was dead. I brought this to the attention of the nursery. They asked that I take pictures of the plant and take clippings and immediately seal them in a plastic bag, and then bring them back in. I complied. They looked at the pictures and the clippings and determined that, while the topiary did not have any bugs, it must just be defective. Instead of replacing it, they said I could buy another for half of the original price. While I begged and pleaded, that was the best they would do.

In my opinion, the customer service at Blue Mount Nursery is terrible. Given the way I was treated, I would recommend that anyone looking to purchase flowers/shrubs/plants look elsewhere.

If we were able to replace the plant now, the english garden we invested in would maintain its symmetry. As for the bad behavior of the delivery person, we will just chalk that up to experience. I am sure he did not act in a way that this business would approve.

I stopped by to get some plant caddies and stood in line about 25 minutes to pay for them. I do not know who their customer base is but when I asked about a $50 fee listed on the recept I was told it was the charge for reurned checks. Cashier added that was is in addition to court fees. Since I had just payed with a check I took it as an implied warning. I will not go back to this place.

I'm surprised at the negative comments about Blue Mount. It's our go-to nursery. We drive past Home Depot and Meadow Farms for Blue Mount every time. The times we have been there, everyone has been helpful and friendly, and we bought a lot of interesting specie of plants. Also, I see the complaints about friendliness, but it seems to me that friendliness is a 2-way street. All of our plants that we bought there last year fo the front yard are doing great. We plan to go back tomorrow for more for the back yard!

Have been to Blue Mount twice. Found prices to be very high and followed around the nursery with my children, as if we were going to steal something or damage a plant. Never offered help after purchases or even a "Thank you". Should have went with my intuition the first time when we entered the nursery through a turnstile (very unwelcoming feeling)....and will not return.

Usually I am more of a loyal customer of Meadow Farms Nursery in both the Leesburg and Reston areas. They have better and more consistent customer service. They actually remember you from year to year and work with you on a more personal note.

However, when I am seeking that unusual specimen for my landscape such as Gingko, Butterflies Yellow Magnolia, or Glauca Blue, Blue Mount Nursery does provide. They also have one of the most healthy and varied selection of rhododendrons around.

If you are looking specifically for Jackson & Perkins roses, Blue Mount provides (though a better selection of a reliable "off-brand" based in North Carolina can be found at Meadow Farms... I have several of these, and they've worked beautifully in our weird climate).

For annuals, perennials, and herbs, go to Home Depot and Lowe's (better selection). For better pricing, go to WalMart (no kidding, though selection may be limited).

For hardwood mulch, order from the Boy Scout Troop servicing your area (though if you want pine bark nuggets, you should go to Home Depot). I would not recommend at all Blue Mount for your mulch needs. I ordered a substantial amount from them when I first moved here in 1997... specifically asked for enriched topsoil with Compro. What I got was what looked like was regular topsoil with no Compro or manure enrichment at all. I swear it looked as though it was what the developers had scraped to build the subvisions, and BMN was selling it back to us. I was so disappointed... it was rocky and still had a fair amount of red clay in it. I had no choice but to use it. But never, never again with BMN! Maybe they've changed over the years, but I now make my own compost and enrich my own topsoil.

I shopped around to all three of the big area nurseries in search of some Crepe Myrtles for my yard. Although all three nurseries provided some good information, the customer service at Blue Mount really reeled me in. The employee there walked me around to all the types and sizes, explained in detail the growth and care of the plants and how to choose them, allowed me time to decide and then proptly returned to help me pay, tag the trees and arrange for planting and offered me his card in case I had any further questions.
The original prices were comparable to the other two nurseries but being fall, I actually got my trees at 50% off.
Planting was scheduled in a timely manner and the workers did a fantastic job.

The nursery has a good overpriced selection with slack customer service, at best.

Dear BlueMont : We do live in the dc metro area and many of us are not plant specialists. A picture of the blooming flower to be, or a mere description would be helpful. A price tag on your plants would also be of service considering your staff is few and far between. If you assume and look down on the random visitor interested in a pretty annual to pot: get over your plant snobbery, no one is interested. Sad to say but if you're a novice gardener you are better off dealing with the oblivious nursery staff at corporate America's Home Depot and Lowe's...or a nursery chain.

This place is great if you already know what you want and never have any questions about anything.

I love this place. Good healthy stock. Quick delivery and helpful staff.

I've purchased 40-45 shrubs, many annuals and the quality is the best in the Northern Virginia area that I shop.

Wish they still carried bulbs.

I've lived in this area for 13 yrs and have repeatedly given this business a chance to earn my business as i'm literally minutes from them and every time I leave I swear it will be the last time. I've never dealt with a ruder group of people. Their prices are outrageous and all the signage that they have up clearly show that they have zero trust in their customers. If they are so worried that their customers may walk off the lot with something perhaps they should staff properly or perhaps they also treat their staff so poorly that they can't keep folks. You bring your items up to the counter and the person who writes down what you've purchased doesn't even speak to you - zero customer service. Lastly, i suspect because they don't trust their customers, they herd you through one entrance via a revolving gate, I kid you not, and you MUST exit via the back door, not because you're a VIP, but because they don't trust you.

These are penny-pinching days with the economy in dire straits, so when a plant dies after just a couple days (it was not placed outside or abused in any way) one would expect a responsible seller. When a manager was summoned, he did not show up and I had to look for him in the nursery. When I approached him about my dead plant (with my receipt in hand), he was indifferent and would not replace or provide credit--no restitution whatsoever. For a lousy $4.00 I won't go to this nursery again. They are expensive and not supportive to their customers.

I've been to this nursery a dozen times maybe due to its proximity, but I will never go there again. Almost every time I'm treated like I'm going to steal something. Prices are high which would be okay if you were treated respectfully. Instead it's - you can only exit out the back door so you have to walk around the whole building. Sorry, dude, I'm trying to bring my 3 year old with me and he's still back in the building, what am i supposed to do? Then I get herded by two other guys back to the exit, even though I'm 30 feet from my car.

Blue Mount is your one-stop place to make your yard a showplace! Since we moved to VA five years ago, we have bought several trees there and had them planted by the crew. Every one of them are thriving and look amazing! Their annuals are always the healthiest around, and we'd never even think of going anywhere else. They also have a great holiday shop.

I travel from state to state and was advised by another nursery to check there for a larger selection. I was pleasantly surprised by the large selection. Now since I fly everywhere bringing plants home was a problem. I was given excellent advice from their staff and was able to transport a small banana tree home to Arizona. I was not happy to hear they did not accept Amex cards. But overall very pleased.

Average selection, premium prices. Be aware that there is a 15% restocking fee for all plant material returned for refund. We put a tree on hold and then decided against it the next day. Management insisted on charging a 15% restocking fee even though the tree never left the lot. We will use them only for small items for convenience. We will not buy any large ticket items or large quantity purchases because we feel that customer service is very low priority. This should not be the case when they are charging premium prices.

Overpriced with poor customer service. We bought a birch tree only to find that the main root had been cut too short for the tree to live. When we went back for a refund they refused. They only offered replacements. We looked around the lot and found the rest of the birch trees we had seen weeks earlier all dead for the same reason.

I have been living in Ashburn for the last 15 years, and just started shopping at Blue Mount Nursery this summer. I wish i would have taken the time to stop in to look before this year. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much they have. Since I have been in my house for so many years, it was in dire need of a face lift. After working with the staff... and a few sweaty days of planting I have a beautiful new look. They also have pond equipment and fish- which helped transform my old algae hole back into a relaxing pond.

PROS: great selection
CONS: no AC in the building

I've bought from Blue Mount for years and have never had any issues there, only pleasant interactions. When i need recommendations i take in pictures of the area in my yard and they are more than helpful. Blue Mount's prices are sometimes higher than other garden centers, but plant quality seems to be higher as well. It's also nice to know that whenever I have a diseased or bug infected plant i can take a leaf into them and they are able to help me both identify and control the issue. I also love the gift shop area inside the building, it's like a one stop shop for many of my needs. I would recommend Blue Mount to anyone.

PROS: helpful staff and good plant and gift selection
CONS: can be crowded during the spring

I also love the gift shop area inside the building, it's like a one stop shop for many of my needs. I would recommend Blue Mount to anyone.

PROS: helpful staff and good plant and gift selection
CONS: can be crowded during the spring

I bought 3 trees last week, the Japanese maple was dying within 3 hours after I got it home, the magnolia tree had Japanese Beetles in the top blooms (I never had them here before this - and am now infested. The weeping cherry appears to be OK for now. I called in 3 days and informed them of the situation and was rudely told to bring them back for 50% return. I also noticed a worker there carrying around an aphid infected leaf - even taking it out with the other plants without taking any precautions to prevent further infestation.

PROS: Good selection
CONS: Rude managers, pest infested plants, high price

I have always gotten good quality plants and flowers from Blue Mount, but they are a little overpriced. If I don't have a coupon from the paper or it's big planting season, I try not to go because it gets very crowded and costs so much. I did however get some reasonably priced slate pieces for my yard arrangement, and had my pick. The delivery was prompt and came when expected. Another downside is that when it gets crowded, it's hard to find employees to help you.

This isn't the best plant nursery that I've seen. The plants here are quite expensive too. The people are helpful, but if you really want your money's worth I would pick another nursery. The only time I shop at this one is after the holidays when they put things on sale, otherwise I generally drive the extra distance to go elsewhere.

The "Autumn Festival" at Blue Mount Nursery charges $7 per child and $3 per adult. It is comprised of a moon bounce, a few slides, a climbing tunnel playhouse, and a maze. While entertaining for the kids for a little while, the fun quickly runs out as does your wallet. $20 for a family of four was NOT money well spent.
