Looking below at some of the other comments, I'm not sure that we've all been shopping at the same store. Every time I go into this store, I always get the help and advice I'm after. Furthermore, if I ask the staff a question and they're not sure how to answer...they go out of their way to make sure I get the information I need. I've worked with their reptile girl several times and she's always been nothing short of friendly and informative. When I was having trouble with my Bearded Dragon, she suggested some treatments that not only corrected his eating problems, but also helped save his life!

Every time I've been in the store, the animals looked healthy and alert, everyone had food and water, and the cages were clean (or being cleaned). When my sister was looking for a Miniature Dachshund, we went to Perfect Pets...and they were more than willing to show the paperwork for their puppies. The breeder information clearly showed that the puppies were from right here in Virginia and they had shots and deworming done. The staff answered all of my sister's questions about the puppies and were able to show us that the breeder was USDA registered, just like the store.
All in all, I've never had any problems with the store. I think it's great and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Im no animal expert, so I can't speak to the conditions but PP does have a diverse selection of pets...much much better than the big box pet stores..my son and i enjoy regular visits just to check out the animals.. i support there efforts in bringing variety to our area.

I have been in several times and can say without a doubt that it does need cleaning. The bird cages are definitely cleaned irregularly, and last time I was there a dog with diarrhea was running around the aisles pooping on the floor!! I too try not to shop here, as I don't want to support puppy mills. Also the cat running around does not seem to have it's own food source, but uses her paw to take food out of the bowls of the cat cage. The place definitely smells. 8/05/10

The web site address is not correct. The correct web site is http://www.perfectpetsva.com

Incidentally, most of these negative reviews are for "Perfect Pups", which is not and never was owned by Perfect Pets. Perfect Pups is no longer in business.

I dont know much about perfect pets but I know I was told they were affiliated with each other. I bought 2 dogs from perfect pups 2004-fox red lab and 2007-weinmaraner. I love these dogs with all my heart. Both are doing well, but I do remember after a few months of owning them waking up at night (weinmaraner)-not breathing much, and the lab gasping for air. It did scare me because I had been told by people about this place. I do remember the associates working there were not that pleasent.. Good luck to every dog or animal that was purchased from Perfect Pups. Why did they close up??

Cages were nasty. Small animals lived in feces! Mice could not reach water they had to jump and hang on to water to get to it, many mice jumping on top of each other to get to it. Small animals were living in there feces the store reeked of feces. Prices on dogs were HIGH!! unless you plan on showing a dog ADOPT A DOG SAVE A LIFE DONT BUY!!

Cons: cages need to be cleaned

.

The rabbits need to be rescued. They are living in cages soaked in their own urine and feces. Terrible, unhealthy conditions. These bunnies should be rescued and given to people who will love and care for them! Managers and owners should be ashamed!!!

If giving zero stars was an option, that would be the more accurate rating.

Anyone buying a dog from a pet store is supporting puppy mills. Perfect Pets gets their dogs from puppy mills. A few may come from local irresponsible backyard breeders but the majority come from mass breeding facilities where the dogs live in squalor...confined to tiny cages filled with urine and feces. The dogs have health issues which are, of course, never treated. They are not health tested and often pass devastating genetic conditions on to their puppies.

Adopt a dog from your local shelter. If you MUST buy from a breeder, do your research and support a RESPONSIBLE breeder.

Hints for finding a responsible breeder:

They will NEVER sell their puppies in a pet store, over the internet or in the newspaper

The parents will be fully health tested (NOT the same as being vet checked). They can provide copies of OFA, CERF and holter exam results. They know the health of EVERY dog in their lines at least 3 generations back.

Both parents are titled in confirmation, agility, obedience or another dog sport.

You are allowed to meet the dam. Good breeders rarely own both the dam and sire but you should be able to at least see pictures of the sire and speak with the owners on the phone. The dam should be social and healthy.

You can visit the breeder's home. Make sure the dogs live inside the home with the family and that they are clean and appear well cared for and healthy.

If ANY of the above requirements aren't met, move on. Remember, you can find almost any breed in a shelter! Go to Petfinder.com and just type in the breed you are looking for. You may have to wait and you may have to drive a bit but you will be saving a life instead of condemning more dogs to a miserable life of breeding in a tiny cage.

The kittens were all very healthy and cute, the puppies were very energetic, I don't see how it could be a bad place.I didn't like some of the products and I saw that some of the the kittens were licking at a water bowl that was empty. I was fine however with service, although those complaints down at the bottom were from 2 years ago. (things can definatly change) I was a great place to pet and hold li'l animals!

Every since I was a child we've had pets of every kind - this continued as I had my own child. Having instilled my love of animals in him, he had the great fortune to work at PetSmart and the Perfect Pets on Broad Street. I can certainly tell you that if he had experienced or seen any of the atrocities described here, he would have told me shortly after he quit. He had and always has had a deep respect for the owner and manager of PP, for their commitment to animals. I have been in and spent many a time in that store and can say with conviction that I have never found the store to be anything but clean. I have been to the back and seen the birds and they were never cooped up in small cages as told here. I have seen many a puppy there and was always impressed by how well socialized they were, healthy and amiable. A sign of a good breeder.

While they have had their problems, and hasn't always had the best employees, PP has always been the local store to go to, their affinity and love of animals very palpable.

I love perfect pets! I bought my Boston Terrier there 3 years ago and she is a truly wonderful animal. I also have them watch my parrot when I am out of town. They take perfect care of him and he comes back to me healthy and happy. I have had some very bad experiences with bird sitters, but the staff at perfect pets treat him well and he seems to like it there. I am grateful for them!! I read the bad reviews and I wonder what store they actually went in. I go in perfect pets at least once a month and I have NEVER seen anything like what they describe. I love perfect pets!!

FYI - dogs are typically weaned at 8 weeks. Rabbits at the latest 4 weeks. What advice were you seeking regarding the corn snake? It would be helpful to know what your issue was and the advice that was given before we can determine whether the advice killed your corn snake or your ineptitude with animals killed it.

I have been shopping with Perfect Pets for approx. 6 mos. I understand that it is under new management. Can't speak for the past crew but this family business is very well run. The store is always amazingly clean & bright. I find the animals in very clean conditions and I am amazed at how friendly & knowledgeable the staff is. The puppies they sell ALWAYS seem Happy, healthy, friendly and very well socialized! Certainly NOT indicative of having been purchased from an uncaring large breeding facility. I am told they are purchased locally form only USDA inspected breeders and most are small family breeders. I especially like that the puppies are kept in a large communal play area and allowed to socialize with other pups and people. They have lots of toys and food available and are NOT stopped up alone and lonely, in individual crates longing for human or canine touch. I am proud to shop at a place that is a wonderful example of what a "Pet Store" should be. GREAT JOB new owners.

I HAVE BOUGHT SEVERAL ANIMALS FROM THERE AND THEY WERE VERY HEALTHY AND LOOKED WELL CARED FOR. I SAW HAPPY AND ADORABLE PUPPIES WITH FOOD, WATER, CLEAN BEDDING AND TOYS EVERY TIME I HAVE BEEN THERE. THE STAFF IS ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND AVAILABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. THEY ARE USDA LICENSED AND THEREFORE ARE BY LAW ONLY ALLOWED TO BUY PUPPIES FROM USDA LICENSED BREEDERS. USDA CONDUCTS SURPRISE INSPECTIONS TO MAKE SURE THE ARE KEEPING A SAFE, CLEAN AND HAPPY ENVIRONMENT FOR THEIR ANIMALS. I RECOMMEND THEM HIGHLY. THE MANAGER AND HER DAUGHTER ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE.

I don't recommend them, first off their employees never seem happy to be there, nor do they know much if any about the fish and animals they carry. Secondly, they don't take care of their animals. I told the manager that there was mold in the bowl in one of the cat's cages, and two days later when I went back the mold was still there. And most of their fish have one disease or another. Overall, they just don't take care of ANY of their animals.

My daughter went to Perfect Pets on Broad St., this past weekend. She owns a bunny and has read many books and articles about them. In any event, she asked the age of the bunny they have in the store. She was told it was only 4 weeks old. This is way too young to be weaned from it's Mom. They are not supposed to be weaned until they are 8 weeks old. When she asked why they did this all I could think to say is that they only care about the bottom line and not about the animal. Please only get your animals from the shelter and put places like this out of business.

The advice I was given by an employee killed my baby corn snake. The boy who gave me the horrible advice had a know -it-all attitude. I preceded to call the store multiple times about the incident and they kept saying they'd call me back, but nothing was done about the incident. I'm STILL in the process of dealing with it.

Perfect Pets should be put out of business. They advertised they would not sell puppies - a bold face lie. I admit I did buy a puppy from them , because he was the runt of the litter and not safe w/ all the customers' handling. I took the puppy to the vet as required & he told me the pup had worms that are common to DIRTY pet stores.

The store is filthy.. The bird cages are covered with feces, as are the cat cages for felines up for adoption. (Wonder if they get a kick back on that too.) The baby birds in the back are in cramped containers. Most of the time the store STINKS.
The people there are nothing but money hungry opportunists . My friend bought an exotic animal & was charged $7/day for boarding... When he got the pet home, the cage was full of excretement & urine. What do they do to earn the boarding fee??? Just another way to rip off the public.

I was told the puppy needed eat what he was fed at the store. When I took the him for his vet check, the vet said that this was not the best diet for a puppy & is just expensive garbage!! Perfect Pets is interested in anything for the dollar - not the pets!!!

While there used to be some nice people there, most of the staff now is miserable. There is one young lady there who is very nice & 1 older lady who is occasionally nice. The men look & act like clueless drunks incapable of cleaning cages much less caring for animals. There's a woman ( Dana?) who thinks she knows everything about pets. She's not bright & is NASTY all the time. She acts like she can't wait for her next drink/drug.

Perfect Pets is a nightmare. They should lose their license to sell/adopt pets as well as their business license in general. Money talks...if we do not shop there, with a bit of luck it will just be a bad memory.

Sadly, certain items I buy regularly, are hard to find and none of the chain pet stores carry them. Petclub on Parham closed for good, overnight, without warning. So I had no choice but to try Perfect Pets. Here was my experience. They carried them, but were priced considerably higher than they had been at PetCLub. I bought bulk, figuring I could ask about price and discount. While Im standing at the register, this old tough woman with a northern accent starts ringing me up without looking or speaking. I ask her some questions, and she snaps at me. I said I didnt mean to offend her, that theres no other way for me to know. She snaps back again. I told her that her attitude was really bad, at which she began screaming at me. I walked out quickly....and I could hear her screaming all the way across the parking lot. Shes probably the owner, or related. I prefer to shop where people are friendly and you leave feeling good. I felt horrible after leaving, to the point where I had to write it....Ive never been pushed so far as to write a complaint about shopping, but this store, pushed the limit.

I chose not to say who i am because of legal reason, but i know for sure that Perfect Pups and Perfect Pets were in fact in business together. Every week Perfect Pets would get their puppies from Perfect Pups. And all the puppies would arrive either 1. on a truck full of about 20 dogs, or 2. on an airplane in dog crates. I use to love working for this company until i found out how bad it really could be and how dirty the place really was. You cant change something by your self so after a while you give up and you give up hope on the people you work for. Which are the people i trusted and thought were friends or even like family. My heart was broken by the things i saw and i am truly sorry i was apart of anything that happened to anybody. I know that there is allot of people that have been hurt by this place. I only wish i could change things, but please be assured that i also got screwed by this company for reasons i will not mention. It's a good thing they did go out of business, i hope Perfect Pets is doing better with out Perfect Pups in the picture.

I am a HUGE animal lover and am very particular about the way animals are cared for in pet stores and in shelters. I visited Perfect Pets recently and I saw a tiny little puppy being kept in a fish tank with a vented top. You could see the puppy's ribs, it's eyes were bulging and crusty. It did not look very healthy or happy. It had no reaction to me (but how could it in a glass fish tank?!) A puppy is supposed to be handled and have human contact at such a young age. How is this good care of an animal? They were also asking $895 for the puppy. If I had that much money, I would buy it just to save him from that place!

How is this good care of an animal? They were also asking $895 for the puppy. If I had that much money, I would buy it just to save him from that place!

I am the owners daughter and i can assure you that Perfect Pets is the only store and is not in any way related to or ever was related to Perfect Pups. Perfect Pups in no longer open. But they were never connected to us, however the owner of Perfect Pups WAS the manager of Perfect Pets and i am sorry that yall were given false info, many people were. I am nicely asking you to not hold your grudge that you have towards Perfect Pups against Perfect Pets, Perfect Pets is now under new management and puts their animals and customers first. i can gurantee you that the cages are being cleaned on a daily basis and all the animals needs are being met. and we DO NOT deal with puppy mills. Actually we are now only dealin with local breaders so that we will not have the problems we did in the past. So please give Perfect Pets another chance since we just made new changes :)

I purchased a puppy from Perfect Pups in Midlothian, VA (which I was told was affiliated with Perfect Pets) in April 2008. After almost $4000 in vet bills for 24-hour care and just two weeks later my puppy was gone after she succumbed to Parvo. Perfect Pups is no longer open for business, does anyone know what happened to that store? I'm wondering if I am the only one that bought a very sick puppy from them? I could go on and on about what a truly horrible experience those two weeks were, but it is still too hard to discuss watching my puppy deteriorate and suffer. I have learned my lesson and will never buy a puppy from a store ever again, regardless of how many times they say they do not deal with puppy mills!!

Store employees are helpful and other than fish food I bought that had been 3/4 used (which I returned), the staff has been helpful re: fish products, including returns of equipment. However, we adopted a kitten there 1.5 years ago, and she has herpes in the eyes which took months and lots of money to clear up, unfortunately- she still infected my other cats. She was underweight and spayed too soon, according to my personal vet. I thought CARE was responsible for the adoption but the papers say Village Veterinary Service. Sounds like getting mammals from there may be a problem.

I bought a little white Pekingese Sunday, June 29, 2008. I cannot describe the joy I felt as I walked out with this little dog. My joy was short lived as that night I thought this puppy would die before morning. I noticed that evening when he was sleeping he seemed to breath very hard. That night when he got into a deep sleep he would literally gasp for breath to the point it actually would awaken me. I called the vet the next morning that offered a free health checkup for Perfect Pets but they were too busy to see this little fellow and could not see him until Tuesday. The offer to have this puppy checked out was only good for 48 hours so I took him to my own vet. He was diagnosed with severe stenotic nares disease that would require surgery. After a second opinion from Perfect Pets vet confirmed the diagnosis they offered to pay for the surgery or refund my money. I decided to elect the refund as I was unsure of what other congenital defects might show up later. I did, however, ask what they would do with this little fellow and they stated "we will sell him". If they do not buy from puppy mills why wouldn't they return this little fellow to the breeder? While I was still in the store they put him right back out there with the other puppies for sale knowing the puppy has a problem. They did refund the money I paid for the puppy but I am still out over $100 including the vet bill and all the supplies I bought for the puppy from Perfect Pets. This was a heartbreaking experience. Buyers Beware!

Being a Recent and current customer of BOTH of their stores, i find some of these reports highly unbelievable. I have never seen any signs of neglet towards any animals, and if i would have i wouldnt have purchased three dogs, (Which are all healthy and happy) and many many small animals that my children adore. I do enjoy seeing the new puppies on a regular basis and found the staff to be extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I would recomend either store to any friend or stranger.

On June 20, 2008 I visted Perfect Pets. The bird cages needed a good cleaning.
There were several puppies in the sales cages.they did not seem alert and active.

I am the owner of Perfect Pets of VA, LLC. I am not a man, I am not a drunk, I am not bald, or a stoner. I also did not promise anyone anything for a fundraiser. We do sell puppies. I have never seen a puppy with descriptions given in these reviews. I would suggest you give the store a chance, and come in and see for yourself!

I work for a local animal welfare organization and several years ago the owner of Perfect Pets pledged, in writing and with his signature, to sponsor a fundraiser of ours at the $1,000 level. This is an important annual fundraiser that we depend on to continue to care for orphaned animals.

Perfect Pets got all of the marketing benefit of being associated with our event (logo on brochures, ads, banners, website, t-shirts, etc.) and never paid, even after a series of mailed reminders and polite phone calls to the owner's office over the course of about 6 months. I got him on the phone once and he basically said "check's in the mail after I meet with my accountant this week." We never received any payment and had to write off his pledge.

If he runs the rest of his business this way then I feel sorry for the animals in his care, and for his customers.

they really do sell puppies from puppy mills! the owner is a drunk who's just after the money and his store managers under him are stoners... if you ever peek into the back kitchen looking area chances are you'll find puppies in cages that have been segregated from the others because their sick or birds shoved to the side in tiny cages till others sell.... any pet store that sells puppies and exotic birds should be avoided... they may look all cute in the "bird nursery" window or puppy cage... but in this sort of environment they arent getting the proper care either of the animals need... the puppies are usually lethargic from lack of interaction, and a friend of mine was about to purchase a bird from them, but then it died from being fed wrong... if you can't get puppies from decent breeders and care for them properly or can't employee people who know how to feed birds without killing them... then DON'T DO IT AT ALL!! this place needs to be shut down... it has GOT to be animal abuse!

Pros: none

Cons: everything that goes on there

This pet store sells puppies. If anyone saw the Oprah Show last week, they know that 99% of all puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills, primarily in the midwest. The first time I was in the store after they started carrying puppies, I asked to see it's papers....sure enough, it was from a "breeder" in the midwest. No reputable breeder ever sells to a pet store.

Never buy anything from a pet store that sell puppies.

About a year ago in March, we walked in Perfect Pets and fell in love with two puppies. They said they were up for adoption so we assumed with the paperwork, etc., that it was legit. To make a long story short, three days after we purchased them I took them to the vet only to find out they were about two days from death. A year later and about $4000 dollars later, I am happy to say they are happy, healthy one year olds. These people lie, and they don't care about the animals. They care only about putting money in their pockets. I found out today that they have opened a shop in Midlothian. I walked in there to find a cute basset hound puppy roaming around. You could see his ribs, and he was into everything....things that I believe could be harmful to him. When I told the girl that her ribs should not be showing but you should be able to feel them, she said that all basset hound pups looked like that. I then found a beagle pup put in a glass cage so to speak with a bloated tummy (indicative of worms), with no energy and could not even open his eyes. The other pups as well as other animals were raggy looking and obviously not being taken care of properly. The only thing I can say is to stay away from this place and go to a reputable breeder or adopt from a shelter. I love my girls and wouldn't take anything for them, but it was a rough road for many months.

You know when you see that happy little puppy in the window? This isn't the place. None of the animals here even look healthy. The mammals I saw (puppies, that greasy monkey, rodents) have dull coats, and they seem lethargic...probably signs of neglect (probably due to the tiny cage size). I wouldn't buy from here.

there was a puppy in there desperately in need of medical attention (green crusty nose and eyes... which could indicate distemper, eye infection, respiratory infection etc.) . The workers laughed at me when I said something. The cages were to small and dirty, the animals were all lethargic, the fish tanks were all green, their were fish eating other dead fish. It was disgusting. Buy your animals and supplies somewhere they care about the animals. This is not that place. Fin and Feather, Noah's pets...ADOPT AN ANIMAL FROM A SHELTER...just don't buy ANYTHING from here!

Perfect pets is a great place to take the kids to explore. Pets range from small rodents, fish, and birds to hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and a wide variety of reptiles. Friendly staff are often happy to give information on the best pets, and let you visit with the animals.
Nice, clean store as well.
