The Norfolk SPCA has been saving pets for many years. I imagine that hundreds are adoped out each year. Having volunteered there, I must say that they are not only professional, but compassionate and caring for all the animals. Time is taken to help intakes to adjust, which can be a traumatic time for them . A pet being left by it's owner does not understand that there may be a good reason. They just know they are in a strange place with strangers and their "people" have not come back for them. From what I have observed, each one is given the best chance possible for adoption. This is a no-kill shelter and I applaud all of the staff, management and also the adjacent clinic staff, for all they do to protect and place each precious animal into an appropriately matched family. I give it 5 stars! Great Work!

In regards to Raegan d 's comm.: I'm sorry you had a 'negative experience'@ the ASPCA, unfortunately, I'm afraid sometimes for whatever reasons, these things will occassonily happen an will, when dealing w/ the public, ( not that this was your fault) and animal abuse is, ever on the increase, break down in, or misunderstanding, is going to happen, when dealing w/ large masses of people/ animals. I don't claim to speck for ,or represent ,the SPCA, but by & large, I think / know, that w/o them (SPCA) where would the wellbeing & protection be for our furry'friends'?!, I might suggest you take your issue to the city manager, maybe he could be further help to you in this matter. good luck P.

I had to fill out paperwork before they would let me see the dogs. After doing so, the worker told me I am not allowed to adopt because I once had a dog and didn't take her with me when I moved up to VA. I told her that it was a family dog and when I moved out of my parent's house the dog of course stayed. She said that it doesn't matter. Because I abandoned that dog that I was likey to abandon one of theirs and they had been through so much already.

I can't believe they are still open with crazy people mannng the show. Later they sent me a flyer asking for money so I felt I should write a review to warn others not to try this place. There are hundreds of other adoption places. I now have two happy and healthy dogs. Unfortunately when my son moves out he will also be unable to adopt from the Norfolk SPCA because he abandoned them. Crazy.
