The Fairfax Station Rairoad Museum is a nice place to visit. It houses a railroad museum, A Norfolk and Western Caboose, a Civil war,Clara Barton or Red cross museum and a variety of local artifacts. This museum was actually built during the civil war. From time to time they have a lot of events like Model Train Displays, forums, Civil War Tours etc. You just need to check out their website for those schedules. You can also host parties here!

PROS: Entrance fee is very affordable and free for kids under 4
CONS:

This is one of the well preserved sites to see if you are near Alexandria, VA. It takes about a 1/2 hour to visit and learn. The children enjoy the pictures on the walls and hearing the station guide teach. They have been very good with little children to make it interesting. The adults in our group enjoyed learning it's history and architecture.
