In the fall of 2000, my family made the decision to move my 90-year-old great-grandmother into a nursing facility - she was no longer able to care for herself and needed round-the-clock care. Not having much money to fall back on, she unfortunately ended up at Beverly Healthcare.

At first, things went okay. The building was shabby and smelled funny, but the staff was friendly enough and tried to make her feel at home. Within a month of her arrival there, Grandma was hospitalized with pneumonia. Then again a few months later. And AGAIN. She would recover in the hospital, go back to Beverly, and BAM, sick again.

She was admitted to the hospital for the last time on a Friday night in November 2001, again with severe pneumonia. By the time the staff at Beverly THOUGHT to call our family to let us know, it was too late - by the time we raced to the hospital to be with her, Grandma was gone. I was robbed of my chance to say goodbye.

There is no excuse for not informing a family immediately of a change in condition or hospitalization. The staff at Beverly Healthcare was negligent and cruel in not alerting us sooner. Please, do not EVER send your loved one to this facility.

PROS: None
CONS: Shabby, run-down; negligence of staff.
