Rainbow Sweets in Marshfield, Vt. was definitely the highlight of our vacation. The food, pastries and quirky, eccentric chef made our visit memorable. A ranger at a Vermont Visitor's Center near the NH and Vt border recommended this place to us and warned that "The pastries are incredible but the chef is a bit wierd." We planned to grab a couple of pastries and coffee for the road - but upon entering - the Chef's delightfully animated welcome and the smell of the food had us sitting down for a full lunch. We were so happy we did. Empanada to die for, and a wonderful moroccan dish started the gastronomic voyage. We finished with Johnny Depp's, Blueberry cheesecake, and a fabulous raspberry eclair. Expensive, but oh so worth the trip.

We stumbled on Rainbow Sweets by accident (just needed coffee and a bathroom!) The food and desserts were delightful, the owner less so. Some may find his constant reminders of how exquisite his fare is charming. But they are incessant! Is the chocolate tort worth it? Perhaps :)

And in response to $$, yes, the prices are unknown. And the owner obviously prefers endless spenders.

The owner snapped scornfully at my hearing-impaired 74 year old mother to "Pay attention" when she asked him to repeat his description of an item. Perhaps the food is good (I certainly will never sample it), but the owner's arrogance and disrespect toward my bewildered mother ensured our hasty departure. I have no time for a person who believes he is above common courtesy, simply because he is the big fish in his extremely small pond.

Just sorting through so old photos and came across one I took of Rainbow Sweets, on a motorcycle trip in August of 2002. I stopped for lunch at the Cafe in this little town that seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. The food was amazing, it was one of the most memorable events of the trip. Unfortunately I wasn't able to remember where, on my long road trip, Rainbow Sweets was located. Now that I'm older, wiser, and Google literate I was able to find your website. I think it's time for another road trip.

This out of the way, hole in the wall is to die for. I live not far from here, but had never had the opportunity to stop by. I stopped in recently and overpowered by the insane smell of pastries baking. The other reviews critique the crazy "CHEF", but as it turns out, he is not the only one cooking/baking there. He has a few helpers and one dark haired, short beauty of a girl bakes a lot of the items on the menu and says she's been there a few years now. She loves it ! She enjoys bantering with her boss and listening to him perform his act everyday. He's quite the entertainer. Anything on the menu is out of this world. It's a must on your travel stops!!

My 16 year old son and I happened upon this true gem purely by chance. We were on a long road trip and desperate for nourishment. We couldn't have been luckier. One step in the door, and we knew we were some place special. No quick sandwich-to-go here! We happily put aside the "road warrior" mentality and indulged in one of the most memorable meals we've ever had. The food is divine and is the best of the best without question. But the atmosphere in this small 6 table shop is what makes it so special. The quirky chef with his chatter and pastry presentations is unforgettable. And, he has the unique ability to unite everyone in the room through his antics and shared humor. We were back on the road in 50 minutes, nourished beyond our imaginations. A stop at this little shop will provide more of a mental vacation than you would get in 2 days at a spa. Not to be missed and never to be forgotten!

Yes, the food is fab, the baked goods are outstanding, the chef has pizazz, and the prices are "high." The price isn't the problem it is not KNOWING what the price will be when making selections that is uncomfortable. Some of us with high appreciation for what we're getting, are still mortals without bottomless pockets, and would appreciate knowing in advance what items cost - rather than getting an un-itemized total with the final bill. Fair enough, yes?

We came by the small store of Rainbow Sweets, just by accident. We have had a GREAT lunch with a delicious desert.
The performance of the ??chef?? was very entertaining. It wasn??t cheap, but worth every penny.
Just a small advice. Use the bathroom after you have eaten.

This is one of my top 3 favorite bakeries in the world. Yes the world. The other 2 are Maison Blanc in Oxford, England & Vegan Treats in Bethlehem PA. However, Rainbow sweets beats them all thanks to the actual experience of going to the place & the cafe food as well as the baked goods. Make sure you try the "Sean Connery on a plate" or the "Johnny Depp on a plate." These very well maybe the same warm sweeties fresh from the oven, but it doesn't matter, you should eat it any way & savor every minute of it. I wish I lived in Vermont! I wish I could go to Rainbow Sweets for pizza night! I envy those who can!

I took my boys to this place while traveling on vacation last year. I went in and was immediately overwhelmed with the warm bakery smells of fresh pastries and other unique and wonderful foods. In my normal sarcastic way (often misunderstood I admit), I said, "This place smells awful.", to which the chef replied (and I quote), "Thank you. Sit down over there. No talking. Here is what you will be eating today." Then he proceeded to tell me about all of the day's entrees, how they were made, what was in them, etc. I had met my match indeed. My boys, aged 12 and 15 were rolling on the ground at this point - this guy haden't even flinched. We enjoyed the best homecooked and handmade meal and desserts we'd ever had. My kids still comment about this place and want to go back. Some customers may be put off by this overbearing chef telling them what to eat and not to talk. One word sentences like, "Silverware" (as he points to the pile), or phrases such as, "Finish your plate", or, "You're having dessert." instead of "Will you be having dessert?" make the day. Only people who "get the joke" will choose to stay and enjoy the fine food and great company. Are you worthy?

We didn't notice the prices. Are they high? I didn't think about it at the time - only the really outstanding food and entertaining demeanor of the staff. This is just a little spot where a craftsman is hard at work. If you want cheap food, go to McDonald's.

I highly recommend this place to any wayfaring traveler. And I think that the chef probably "adjusts" his attitude to accomodate both the staid and the more adventurous.

We thoroughly enjoyed this bakery! Just do what the chef tells you, and you'll make it out just fine. And be sure to take some dessert home for tomorrow too.

If you have been to Rainbow Sweets you will immediately understand the irony of my title. Places like this just don't spring up (they grow) and they certainly cannot be franchised. The Austrian almond pastries, linzertort, cream-filled balls of gastronomic delight and everything else is perfectly produced, delivered and enjoyed. My memories go back to getting my haircut here in the 60's and I'm glad for the creative destruction that has yielded Rainbow Sweets. Value is not the same as price. This is valuable food and place that is worth every dollar.

I would just like to let people know that the address of our Bakery is posted incorrectly. The real address is Rt 2 in Marshfield, VT. Also, in response to the comments about price, all of the dishes and desserts we prepare are extremely complicated and time consuming. Nobody else around is making these items. They are all authentic and completely worth the price! Hope to see you there!

My one and only "RAINBOW SWEETS" experience was summer 2004. What a fabulous memory. Food, chef, staff.....all were exceptional. I can't remember what we ate, but I do remember loving every morsel. The prices are a little high, but the side show by the zany (talented) chef is worth every cent.
I plan to return to Vermont just to stop by Rainbow Sweets again.

I remember wandering into this shop with my family when I was just 11 years old. Upon entering, the owner invited us to the back room to smell a dish that was just coming out of the oven. We ended up ordering a pastry each, and, on our trip, continued to visit the shop every day. The owner is one of the most animated men I've ever met, and the local crowd is simply fantastic. This is one of those wonderfully eccentric places you dream of finding. If you're in the area, stopping in for a bite to eat should certainly be on your agenda.

Driving down the road after enduring a painful hour-long factory tour and sampling of grocery store brand cheese at the Cabot Factory, I realized I needed a cup of coffee to make it back to Massachusetts. The only place I could find was a little shop with a sign that said "Rainbow Sweets: Bakery and Cafe". Despite my wife's protest to keep driving, we went inside. We were instantaneously swept into a sugar frenzy that won our taste buds, but emptied our wallets. The proprietor was charming and the pastries and espresso were some of the best we have tasted. However, the proprietor obviously had a background in car sales because I now have the Maserati of pastries in my fridge. I would certainly recommend this off the beaten path gem, but ask for the prices first or you may end up washing dishes.

This place was amazing. I can honestly say that in all of my life, I have never been anyway even a bit like it. First, it's very small...probably only seats about 20-25 people. The only people working there are the crazy greek chef and a local person who helps him out with smaller things like getting drinks. The Chef (as I will call him since his name escapes me) comes out and personally seats you and tells you about today's specials and other food just like everyone imagines a chef would (telling you how great it tastes and using lots of wild hand motions). I've only been here a couple times, but each time was amazing. The entrees are excellent and the deserts are even better. Eating here is almost as much about entertainment as food.

PROS: Great food, Amazing deserts, Crazy Chef
CONS: Expensive, It's in the middle of nowhere

Handmade batches of European pastries like St. Honore, Linzertorte, Nusstore. Lots of international baked specialties for lunch and dinner like Moroccan B'Stilla, Spanakopita, Empanadas. Do not drive by EVER!!!

You don't into this back country treat expecting such high prices, but once in awhile is worth the splurge. The deserts are of course the real draw, although they have excellent food all around. The last time I was there the owner himself came out and greeted myself and my family. Great atmosphere, wonderful local crowd.
