I went there to get state inspection last month. They claimed I needed to replace emergency brake line because it was not working and quoted me $650. I told them I wanted to get a 2nd opinion so they put the car together and parked outside. When I walked ut and tried to drive back out of the parking lot, I notice my car was not moving when reversed. I thought maybe emergency brake got stuck. Eventrually, I got it to back out. I found couple of days later, it was my transmission was totally messed up. I know it was the mechanic who F* my transmission... most likely it was intentional because I did not follow up and repair what he was asking for. I had to repair my transmission at dealer (cost me $4K) and passed inspection w/o emergency brake repair. I would NEVER go back to Essex Automotive. They use state inspection program to falsely create work and damage customer's vehcle. Don't ever trust them.

I will never, ever, take any of my vehicle to Essex Automotive. Ever again. For anything. I've been going there because its close to me and its convenient, but never again. Every time I go there I bring my car in for one thing and they hand me a list of 3 other things that need to be done. I tell them to just fixed what I asked for and then I'll take it somewhere else to get a second opinion. I take it to another place and they have no idea why they would recommend that.

I had the state inspection done there and it failed for having loose ball joints, and he automatically gave me a quote and an amount of time and told me I could pick it up later. I said no, I refuse to have them fix it and I'll go somewhere else. I took it to another inspection station in Milton. Not only did they pass my car, but they thought it was ridiculous that Essex had told me it failed.

If someone ever asks me about Essex Automotive ever again I will tell them two words: Absolutely Not.

I trust Essex Auto. They do make you wait - no appointments for anyone - just first come first served, but they don't lie. I have come to them 2 times from another shop and they have saved me a lot of money by finding the real problem instead of replacing multiple parts and adding on tons of labor, or, in one particular case, catching another shop in an outright lie. Need examples: one shop (Champlain Valley Auto) told me that I needed rear struts and sway bar links to pass an inspection/Essex Auto told me my car doesn't have those parts, instead I have a swingarm suspension (saved $240). Another shop said my A/C didn't work and needed a new compressor/Essex Auto said to replace the relay switch first and it worked after that (saved $700-850). I commend them on not trying to take advantage of people and actually doing only the necessary work.

When my daughter was in Burlington to visit someone, her car just stopped running. We looked up some possible repair places on the internet and found that she was about a mile from Essex Automotive. The car started up and made it there. Despite having no appointment, they took a look at it right away. In fact, they worked on it all afternoon. Much of that time was spent trying various things to make it stop running again and just driving it around. All in all, they spent a lot more than the 1 and a half hours they charged her. They fixed a couple of possible causes although not being sure what happened and not being able to make it happen again, they admitted that it was not a sure fix. A month has passed and it has not happened again. The people at Essex Automotive were great. My daughter was in a position where they could have charged a lot more. They probably could have kept it in the shop for a week but that is not what they did. I recommend them highly.

I brought my car to Essex Automotive Services because of their commercials about "No appointment needed" and "Always a free shuttle." The former was true but, the latter apparently depends on the counter persons mood. I was asked if I could wait because he "really didn't want to drive to Burlington." Ok, fine, I will burn an hour of vacation time in lieu of the free shuttle that is supposed to "always" be there.

I called before I brought my car in for an alignment and was told that it would start at around $60 and go up if parts were needed. I thought there may have been a problem with the tie rod on the driver's side and had purchased one months ago while I was replacing the wheel bearings and struts myself.

After they got my car on the lift, I was told by the mechanic that my tie rod was indeed bad. I told the guy I happened to have a new one on the passenger's seat. He told me he couldn't install my part as it was shop policy. At this point I want to leave, do the tie rod myself and bring it back for the alignment. However, I had to travel the next day so I was somewhat over a barrel.

I tell the guy to buy the cheapest part and install it (despite the fact that I have a TRW part IN THE CAR.) He finished the car quickly and then tells me that the car still pulls to the right a little but the "machine says it's aligned." Great, is the machine going to buy me new tires in a few months?

At this point I am an hour late for work. I just want to get the heck out of there. I sign for the bill, which I thought was grossly inflated considering what was done, and I leave.

Upon checking the billing breakdown, I find these charges:
Under Parts - "Shop Supplies / Expense = $13.79." Under Labor - "Measure Wheel Alignment = 19.95."
Shouldn't MEASURING the wheel alignment be considered PART of the wheel alignment procedure? Apparently not, since there was the full $59.95 charge for the wheel alignment itself right below it.
Again under Labor - "Haz/Waste Disposal = $3.45"
HUH? What do you have to dispose of? The old tie rod? If that's the case then give it to me, I'll dispose of it. Sheesh!

In conclusion, Essex Automotive Services is not a shop I would recommend. I will not be going back there and will tell everyone I know to avoid them.
