In Short
A strong peanut smell fills the air at this dimly lit eatery. With brick walls so rustic that the mortar is chipping and lights dangling from visible wires, the atmosphere is anything but romantic. However, if standard Thai fare like pad thai is the goal, the service is speedy and the result is a satisfying plate of noodles with choices of chicken, shrimp or tofu.

Key Points

  • Now Delivering Lunch
  • Catering All Events
  • Authentic, Clean, and Fun!

The Inside Scoop

  1. Look Good - American utensils are provided, but chopsticks are available upon request.
  2. What to Drink - Try their syrupy sweet Thai iced coffee for a nice counterbalance to the spiciness.
  3. Know Before You Go - The food heat factor ranges from one to five stars--those who don't like it hot should stick with one or two stars.

Thaiger Room's Thai food is really good and they give you big portions! I highly recommend the chicken curry, phad thai and rice combo. One of my favorite places on the Ave!

yummy

This is my second favorite thai place on the ave, thai tom being my favorite. I definitely recommend the curry fried rice. It's a bit small, but decent prices, and consistently good food.

Great Thai food in the U District

by Katie C. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,231

I lived in Thailand for years, so I am no stranger to good Thai food. I had heard this place was just okay, so I didn't make an effort to go for a long time. Finally, some of my friends wanted to go, so I went, and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. The noodles were really good, with a genuine Thai flavor.

Delicious, convenient and fast Thai cuisine.

by Audrey F. | insider Insider | Rank: 31,408

Many in the University District will hail Thai Tom's as the best Thai food around, but I wouldn't overlook the Thaiger Room.

Located on the Ave by the UW campus, this restaurant always has your order ready quickly and is never as crowded Thai Tom's. I haven't gotten to try all the different items on the menu, but the ones I have tried are ALL wonderful!

Great Thai Catering!

by jooz

We had Thaiger Room cater our party and the food was amazing, they delivered it on time, and everyone loved it. Thai food is rarely expensive, and this is no different - kind of a cool alternative for a business lunch...

Pros: Catering was out of this world!

Cons: none

Food and service are fab.

by jes7

If you get takeout here, they always make sure you have water to drink while you wait. The whole staff always seems friendly. The food is delicious and they are always speedy with getting it out to you. The restaurant is clean (which is a big deal for U-District). Love this place!!!

Pros: Friendly and quick service

Don't. Ever.

by nothaigerroom

I've been a loyal customer here for years. They are ungrateful for my patronage, want more money than I choose to give them, and I ----- after eating there today. (*edited to comply with terms of use) I will never set foot in that restaurant again. Why? For the awesome atmosphere? For their superior food quality? They have three competitors on the same block. This review is the last five minutes of my life they will ever waste, and I hope it does you some good.

Pros: close to UW

Cons: everything else

Cheap but be wary of extra charges

by udubber_julie

The lines at Thaiger Room are no longer existent and their loyal customers have continued to dwindle...and for good reason. Thaiger Room's service leaves everyone feeling like their business is not only unappreciated but also unwanted. Although they have good prices for their portions, their food is either extremely tasty and fresh or stale....almost as if they had re-heated yesterday left over ingredients quickly and covered it with tons of sauce to hide the fact. Also, their service leaves customers feeling as if they are intrusive and bothersome to the waitresses and THEY CHARGE AN AUTOMATIC 18 PERCENT GRATUITY FOR PARTIES OF 6 OR MORE but they don't tell you this. It's as if they were trying to deceive you by placing the price as pre-tax and purposefully assuming that we can not read their chicken scratch. Make sure to look over your bill twice for any extra charges that shouldn't be there or you will end up being cheated also. Overall, good food but extremely inconsistent.

Pros: Big portions, cheap

Cons: Service, poor lighting

Highly disappointed

by rv_petrov

I used to love Thaiger. They had a great food and quality service. They always were busy and in rush hour you would have to wait a little to be seated. But that worth it.

Recently I took my friend who was visiting me from abroad to there. I was unpleasantly astonished with what happened there. First the service was slow. Too slow. We were even thinking about leaving when the food finally appeared. It was ok but too sweet. And Phad Thai had some strange taste. But the worst thing - they try to overcharge us - instead of expected 40-45 the brought $80! Somehow it looked to me it wasn't a mistake but an intentional thing, because when I asked waitress what's up she just pulled another receipt from here pocket with the correct sum. Didn't even apologize. So, what's up with you guys? Did you change your owner and now trying to trick your customers? At least your lost one of them for now.

Pros: Conveniet location, small place

Cons: bad service

Best phad thai!

by ashwhit

This is my all-time favorite Thai restaurant! I love that it's just a little hole-in-the-wall place and you can watch the cooks preparing all of the food with speed and accuracy. The phad thai is my favorite dish, but their soups are hearty and on a cold day, they are perfect! I also really like the atmosphere with the dark furniture, brick walls and dangling lights. The waiters are all polite and attentive and I always leave with leftovers so the portions are a healthy size. Best of all, the price is cheap and affordable.

Pros: best phad thai, soups

Cons: smoky from the stoves, seating

I miss the Thaiger Room!

by kee22

I used to go to the Thaiger Room all the time before I graduated. Since then, I moved and haven't food a place that comes close to their great food. I have never had a bad experience with service or food quality...and I used to eat there at least once a week. They had great food and the best phad see yew that I have ever tasted (other thai restaurants that I have been to haven't came close). I also like their thai iced tea, black sticky rice dessert (i miss it!) and their spring rolls. Although it is a hole in the wall and the wait during dinner is long, they had the best Thai food in the U District. I'm definately going to eat there again the next time I'm in Seattle!

Pros: Great food, good service, cheap

Cons: hole in the wall, long wait to be seated for dinner

Best Spring Rolls, Good cheap food, but inconsistent

by wonbanana

I have yet to find a place that has spring rolls as good as this place. They are fried, but are so light and crispy like a pastry. Seriously, I have gone to Cleveland and back without finding a comparable spring roll. Their noodle dishes are typically excellent. The only complaint is that they aren't consistent. One day, my Phad See-Ew is perfectly stir-fried, perfectly sauced with crispy veggies. The next day, the pan wasn't hot enough so it's soupy and the noodles broken up and overcooked/simmered. Then the day after that, there's barely any sauce and it's burnt everywhere. It's battered customer syndrome. When it's good, it's fantastic. After that, I'm chasing the dragon.

Pros: food, SPRING ROLLS!!!

Cons: inconsistent food, inconsistent service, servers can be absentminded/mean

Best Thai in town - even with kids!

by firearcher

This is by far the best place to go for lunch on the Ave. The service hovers between a 7 and a 10, but the food is always a 10. During lunch, you usually have to wait in line for 5 minutes before being seated, but it is always worth the wait. When we took our 5 year old son, one of the chefs brought him a pair of chopsticks with an elastic band around one end and showed my son how to use chopsticks. Very friendly staff, delicious food. Highly Recommended.

Pros: Delicious Food, Excellent Service, Large Portions for a Great Price

Cons: parking

GREAT THAI FOOD !

by rona202

My first visit, the place was packed but everyone took the time to make me feel comfortable and welcome. The Chef is a great cook and a friendly guy. The portions are large and the food is inexpensive. You choose how spicey you want it, and it's made to your taste.

Once you get to know their menu it's easy to call ahead for take-out if you're in the mood to eat at home.

If you haven't tried Thai food yet, this is the place to start. If you already know Thai food, this is a great place to go. I recommend it highly !

Pros: Large Portions, Low Prices, Take-Out Option

Worst Thai on the Ave

by littlewing86

If you're looking for great Thai food, don't go to Thaiger Room. I was completely disappointed. They add 18% gratuity with parties of 6 or more, which I found to be not deserved at all with the extremely slow service. The food was way too sweet. I found the Tom Yum to be completely inedible. On the Ave, with a Thai restaurant on nearly every block, eat at any one of them but Thaiger Room.

Pros: OK Ambience

Cons: Bad service, Bad food

High expectations? Don't eat here...

by arauth

As my boyfriend and I arrived for dinner, it was emtpy and the staff were sitting around talking. One waiter hopped up and led us to a table, nice and relatively quiet, but in minutes, neighboring tables were filled and we still hadn't been asked to order. When we got our food, which arrived in good time, we were pleased with the portion/price ratio ($6.25 for a large dish) but I wasn't pleased with my curry (My first, found it disgusting). It took us 15 minutes after we paid in cash to receive our change, as the waiter made the assumption that all of it was his. I gave my leftovers to a roommate when we got home - He ate it down gleefully. All in all, average food, depends on if you like Thai in general. It was the service that influenced my overall decision, as it was horrible.

Pros: Convenient Location, Priced well

Cons: Bad/Slow Service, Crowded

Best thai food on the ave!

by blueskye

This place always hits! The Pad Kee Mow is the best in town! Great sized portions and friendly and consistent service. It can get a little peppery in the air causing a few coughing spells from time to time. I think the new kitchen set up has helped this though. Definitely check this out!

Pros: Great flavorful food, Big portions, Friendly service

Cons: Can get crowded
