Shut up and eat
  • Affordable prices
  • Nominated Seattle's Best Sushi
  • Open till 12am on weekends

Since 1994 Hajime Sato has helmed this sushi joint. Menu items are as colorful as Hajime himself (check out the restaurant's Web site, www.sushiwhore.com): Charley's Angels Roll, Green Lip Mussels with Dynamite Sauce, and Cheesy Aligator Roll are some of the sample dishes. Traditional Japanese music isn't played at Mashiko, because, according to Sato, "it reminds [him] of two things: grammar school and death." Instead, "new and interesting music" plays. All of this adds up to a unique sushi experience, culminating in Sato's catch phrase: "Shut up and eat."

Not worth the aggrevation  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

Mashiko's was the first sushi restaurant that made me realize I could never eat sushi from Safeway again! They helped me refine my sushi palate. But---while the rolls are delicious and creative, the wait for arrogant service and the price, have moved me away from this restaurant. In another review someone suggested reservations. This may be a new feature because when I last went that wasn't an option. If you aren't in a hurry, can handle uber expensive, and don't mind NY style wait people the fare is delicious.

By Far the Best Sushi in Seattle  5 Star Rating - World class

I actually thought twice about writing this review as this place is so great I am not sure I want the word out to everyone. The sushi Chef is both talented and an interesting fun person. I recommend sitting at the such bar as he is great for making suggestions and the conversation is always good. All of the food is top notch, fresh with a large verity always ask what the specials are. The pieces of sushi are very generous so you dont need to order as much as you might at another restaurant. Prices are a bit pricy but well worth the meal you will get. This is a must try, worth driving to, super good, tell all your friends about it, kind of place.

PROS: Best Sushi in Seattle
CONS: the wait to be seated can get long

Will not return 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

I must agree with the other reviewer who called this place insufferably arrogant. "Shut-up and eat!" is their motto. How charming. There is also a list of rules on the menu. As one of three neighborhood sushi joints, my husband and I decided to give this place one more try and made reservations for my birthday. The waiter had some strange attitude problem and was difficult to "work with", he actually scoffed at my mention of Teriyaki and said that particular dish "isn't even Japanese." The service is slow and the food ain't that great! In fact it's a little bizarre. We prefer the friendly, simple service of Azuma and Kamei up the street. The one thing Mashiko has going for it, however, is the heated, automatic bidet toilet.

Ho-Jam-Ay. 5 Star Rating - World class

Ho-Jam-Ay (chef and owner of mashiko) is a native of the island country of Japan. A small country in the ocean, now home to upwards of 3,000 japanese peoples. He is very doscile (for the most part) and is good around children. The food at Mashiko is as nice to look at as it is too eat. I highly recommnd this west seattle jem.

Pros: FRESH< FRESH<FRESH!
Cons: I am not capable of eat ing an infinite amount of sushi.

Crappiest Service and Attitude in Seattle 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

I tried several times, but cannot forgive the arrogance, attitude problem, high prices and slow unresponsive service. I took the parents and wife for a celebration of a major event and we were treated like garbage: had a reservation but took 30 minutes to seat us; no food on the table for 35 minutes after we were sat; then small portions arrived at the table every 15 minutes. Each of us got one bite, then we sat there hungry for 15 minutes. The check was over $300 for "Chef's Choice" and we all left hungry.

I wrote 2 letters to the owner (just hoping he would communicate regret for our experience) but received no response at all. I'll never return.

Cons: Bad service, arrogant staff, unconcerned with customer satisfaction

least helpful owner 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

I recently went and for the first time ate at the sushi bar here. Yes there was a "specials" board. I asked for help with recommendations. I have a vision disability so could not see the board. The comment that the owner/sushi maker came back with was that he had a board of recommendations and wouldn't have put them on the board if he didn't recommend it. I have never believed someone could be so rude. The sushi is ok, however, why would you want to be treated like that?

Pros: rudest sushi chef I've ever met

Best Sushi - Not overpriced!! 5 Star Rating - World class

I had been hearing about this sushi place in West Seattle for months, and my friends and I finally made a reservation. We know one of the chef's that work there, so we were lucky to be seated at the bar where you can watch the chefs prepare the food. It was fun and exciting and educational!! I recommend this sushi place to all Sushi connaisseurs. The food is fresh, the rolls are light but satisfying. They have an excellent beer and wine selection for those that do not like Sake. My favorite rolls were the "Temptation Island" and the "Red Violin."
If you are seated at the bar you will notice signs that they say, "smile, you're on camera." And you are! They have live feed on their website! (www.sushiwhore) Make reservations if you want a guarenteed seat quickly, otherwhise you will be waiting awhile. But, it's still worth the wait.

Pros: Fresh Seafood, Light but satisfying rolls
Cons: Drink Service, Limited Seating
