All in all, I think this clinic is a place that I will use again, if needed, and I appreciate the kindness given to me (and Gator) during such a horrific time. We brought a another pet home named Molly, who is an Olde English Bulldogge,

I was a little wary of taking my pet here when he went into a rapid decline and we had missed our regular vet's hours, because I knew it would cost more. I am unemployed and we don't have a lot of money. However, a vet right down the road from who also advertises 24-hour service wanted to charge the same thing as the AEC, PLUS an additional fee to come out at night. We didn't want our pet to suffer any more, so we went on to the AEC. They could not have been more considerate of my pet, or my grieving family! Dr. Thorp and staff were very caring and gentle with our animal, and with our feelings of loss. Yes, they do cost more than our regular vet, but I appreciated NOT being exploited even more in our time of need! I would not hesitate to take an animal there again in an emergency!

If you love your pet, don't bring it to that clinic. I had an emergency on a Sunday night. My 8 month old Morkie swolled a bone. I had to pay $90 for the visit, another $80 for the blood test and $270 for xrays. The very young female Vet told me that it is not a bone she swolled cause it would be much lighter but it has to be taking out. So I had to pay a total of $675 so she could go in thru the throat and take it back out. An hour later she called me saying that it was a bone and her inside had a big hole. But when I brought her in she wasn't even whinning of pain and the vet said it wasn't a bone at first. I think the young, in her own words "unexperienced" vet might have made a mistake.
So I was told it would be another $5000 to safe my puppies life. I don't have that kind of money but tried to contact family to help me out, however, the clinic wanted that money on Sunday night UPFRONT. Who the hell got that kind of money on a Sunday night. So they put her down.
Plus, I witnessed the staff of this clinic holding an elderly couple hostage. That couple came in to drop off a stray they had found. A human thing to do. But the stray had already passed. So the staff told that couple they need to take it with them. The woman refused so the guy working there blocked the door and kept them from leaving. It was insane. I blame myself for bringing my baby to such an awful clinic which might have caused her death.

Thank-you to the staff and whole crew of the Tacoma pet emergency clinic. I am so thank-ful that they did not laugh or think I didn't have a real emergency. A broken toe-nail HURTS like crazy and I was so happy that they could see me at 3 am. They obviously love their jobs - smiling faces, very friendly, very helpful, hot cup of tea. Toe nail is better. These people care and I recommend them to everyone. And given that it was 3 am, I'd call the $150 a steal of a deal. Thanks again.

Right from the friendly front staff to the informative Veterinarian, the Animal Emerg Clinic was a five outta five experience last night. Bucky had been coughing for two days. After asking many questions and then being shuffled into a very clean and freshly painted exam room, the doctor explained the infection kennel cough. To be sure it wasn't something else, they did x-rays. X-rays were consistent with the kennel cough diagnosis. Bucky is on some medicines and yahoo, no more coughing. Thank-you for all your hard work taking care of the sick animals at all hours. It was a bit expensive but well worth every penny and 90% less than my last visit to the ER!

Reading some of these negative reviews is just making me mad, so I thought I'd share my opinion. The animal emergency clinic has always done an amazing job treating my dogs. They've saved all three of mine at one time or another. The people who work here do not have easy jobs. They are dealing with sick animals and crazy owners all day/night long. Trust me, you do not go into this field for the money. You do it for the love of animals. That being said, yes, it is a business. It is not a state funded hospital that gets tax payer dollars to stay open as a service. It is a private business, started out of peoples pockets because they LOVE ANIMALS! The owners of the place could have easily worked at practices that are open 9-6 Monday through Friday and have much less stressful lives. Instead they wanted to provide a place that can save your animals life at any hour of the day. Being open 24/7/365 is expensive people! They have equipment and staff to pay for! How can you call them cruel or un-compassionate because they wouldn't treat your animal for free?!?!?! If they did that enough times, guess what, they go out of business and can no longer provide the service of saving your animals life at any hour of the day or night. Reading that a staff member paid to save that lady's dog is awesome. The staff did not steal your dog, they saved it. Having a pet is a responsibility, not a right. Yes, times are hard now and paying thousands of dollars for your pet is rough... but getting online and writing scathing reviews about a business that is saving peoples pets because they wouldn't treat your dog for free is rough too. They have bills to pay too, just like everyone. I always go to the aec in an emergency situation, they know what they are doing. Highly recommended :-)

overall i would not recommend this ER unless you are desperate. The staff was ok but the compassion and willingness to find a way to help my dog was almost non existent, that is, once I made it clear I didn't have $5000.00 to spare. This hospital made it extremely clear that financial gain is there main priority. The vet came into the exam room, calculator in hand, adding up the thousands of dollars it was going to cost just for the hospital to keep my dog hydrated and nourished for three days and that was just her estimation. Luckily I am a nurse and I have some health care experience so I'm able to keep my pup healthy on my own but my heart really goes out for people who solely rely on money hungry vets like this one.

Business Response:

We're sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at our hospital. I wouldn't agree that we are "all about the money"; however, there are huge costs associated with staffing a 24/7/365 facility of this size. We do offer a payment plan via a 3rd party called CareCredit...the doctor should have offered this as an option, as this is standard procedure. We have tried setting up "in-house" payment plans in the past which did not yield good results. Unfortunetely those people ruin it for everyone. Again, I apologize for your bad experience and encourage you to contact our office manager or the Veterinary Board of Governors for further assistance in resolving your complaint.

I don't know what happened with some of the complaintants pet's as I was not there to witness it. I will say however that I think AEC in Tacoma is the best animal care I have seen, And why if it is so bad. Do they have 2 books full of thankfull clients right there for all to read. And I do mean books as in very thick. I'm sure there are times when things just can't be worked out. However by my experiance today this clinc will do what it can and go the extra mile for you if at all possable. From what I read and saw and experianced with my own critter this clinc has a good track record. My baby is saved and finally looking relaxed, sleeping soundly and seeing a quick recovery after a few hours being home. The last vet I took him too for the same issue would not even give my baby pain meds. And insisted I get a UA at home on my own time when all they had to do was what this clinc did and use a catherdar to get the sample. Life would have been allot less stressfull for me and Horus if I had gone here first and not Value Pet in Puyallup South Hill where they may just kill your pet slowly or make it suffer in pain. My heart goes out to those that greive over their loss..... One must really consider cost and responsibility when it comes to owning a pet. Just like the cost of having a baby. I would starve first befor leting my cat's go with out. And kick myself if I do not care for them as I cared for myself and somehow get the care they need.

You know I agree that the emergency clinic is going to cost more because its an emergency just like the hospital is for humans. But at lease hospitals and most doctors will set up a payment plan for you. there not going to let your family member die just because you don't have the money right there and then. Sometimes I wish that vets would do the same as doctors and let you make payments if you can't afford payment up front. But the experience i had with the clinic was good and not too expensive. But now financially I couldn't afford the clinic times are tough.

I wanted to address the claims of Susan B.'s review. I was the veterinarian who treated her Great Dane that night. He was diagnosed with a GDV- which is when the stomach bloats and rotates onto itself- It is a LIFE THREATENING SURGICAL EMERGENCY. These clients recognized the symptoms and brought him to the hospital but were not financially prepared to get him the care that was needed to save his life. They have owned other Great Danes and knew that they are the most common breed to develop a GDV. No matter where you have this type of surgery done, it is extremely expensive to treat these cases. They are often in the hospital for 3-4 days. There are many complications that can develop. As an emergency veterinarian the worst part of my job is seeing pets who I can fix but whose owners cannot afford to pay for their care. Unfortunately it is extremely expensive to run a 24 hour critical care veterinary hospital. We all work very hard under very stressful circumstances, every holiday, all night long. We are very dedicated professionals and strive to provide the best medicine possible for our patients. The clinic owners HAVE to require that clients pay for services or they would go out of business. It is tragic for all of us when owners are not financially prepared for veterinary emergencies. Yes, we encourage people who do not have any form of payment to try to borrow from a friend or family member. In this case the clients declined to do that and elected euthanasia. They signed a euthanasia consent form and I drew up the solution for his injection. Miraculously a staff member at the last moment offered to rescue this older dog (and take on the financial responsibility of his medical expenses). It is very uncommon that we can offer relinquishment to rescue in lieu of euthanasia. At the time these clients told me "We would much rather him be alive and with someone else than dead". We most definitely did not steal this dog. He was seconds away from euthanasia because the clients wouldn't pay for the surgery that was needed to save his life. Sadly, in todays economy people have to give up their healthy pets to shelters every day because they can't afford them. It is truly a miracle that someone offered to save this dog that night.

We did not steal this dog. He was seconds away from euthanasia because the clients wouldn't/couldn't pay for the surgery that was needed to save his life. Sadly, in todays economy people have to give up healthy pets to shelters every day because they can't afford them. It is truly a miracle that someone offered to save this dog that night.

I wanted to address the claims of devastateddanemom review. Pros: quality care 24/7

I have taken many animals here over the years and have been quite satisfied. Yes they are expensive but for the services they provide it is well worth the expense. I took my miniature dachshund there almost two years ago 2 weeks after giving birth to puppies. Her eye looked like it was going to pop out of her head and she wasnt aware of anyone around her. We rushed her there (a 45 minutes drive for us but the closest) at 2:30 in the morning. We were warned that she could have a tumor behind her eye but it was more like that it was an abcess because she is so young. Distraught and sleep deprived I left my pride and joy there and we went home. A few hours later we heard from them as promised and were relieved, it was only an abcess and she was doing good. We were told to come pick her up. She was there 12 hours and that was the longest we have ever been seperated. When I saw her again I though my heart was going to leap out of my chest. She was so excited and wiggly the tech almost dropped her because she wanted to get to me so bad. We were quoted over $800 but the bill ended up being just over $500 and it was well worth it to still have my girl with me. I will not hesitate to use them again if needed although I sincerely hope it wont be needed.

Please DO NOT take your pets here!! They will hold you over an emotional barrel for $$ and for possession of your pet.
We recently took our Dane in as he was showing symptoms of bloat. Before even taking him in back we were told, in a "strictly business" manner, that it would be $80 for the visit & $130 for the x-ray. Our dog is starting to show signs of pain - what do you think we are going to say. After the x-ray confirmed bloat we were told that surgery would be $3000 - $3500. No way could we come up with that at 8 pm on a holiday week end, nor could we get a loan (through a company they conveniently have brochures for in the room) since we just replaced a car after an accident totaled our old one. Their solution since they would not take automatic deductions from our account was to call family & friends, again on a HOLIDAY WEEKEND. After leaving us to deal with the fact that we will have to put our dog to sleep because we don't have access to $3500, a women comes into the room & tells us "It doesn't happen often.." but they would waive some fees & provided there was no complications we would only need to come up with $2000 or "it happens even less often" we could sign possession of our dog over to one of their employees who would then assume financial responsibility - through emotional blackmail THEY STOLE MY DOG!!

My cat was gasping for breath and seizing as I brought him into the Animal Emergency Clinic. They quickly and gently examined him and told me what I'd known all along. My cat was misdiagnosed with Asthma but actually had congestive heart failure. He was already dead but they were giving him oxygen. The doctor was so kind and suggested I take a few minutes holding him before she took him from me. I do wish he'd been properly diagnosed earlier so he did not have to go through that violent death. The AEC doctor and staff were great and, more importantly, knew what they were doing.

I am a fellow emergency veterinarian. I took my dog here about 3 years ago (sorry for the delay) for a neurologic workup and MRI. I also frequently call the AEC for 2nd opinions, advice and to send referrals. I have always been very pleased with the compassion, level of professionalism and care they have given me and the patients I have sent their way. Are they expensive? Yes. I expect them to be! Who the heck wants to operate a business 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with that much stress and emotion and adrenaline!? Much to our dismay, emergency veterinary care is expensive. Don't you think that financial constraints burden us most of all? I'd love to be able to practice the level of medicine that I'm trained for, but it is expensive, and costs are rising just like in human medicine. Is there a wait? Of Course! I invite anyone to go to the human emergency room and expect to get right in. Emergency care is tough and takes time. Can they give give everyone an immediate answer and guarantee life? Or course not... don't be ridiculous. No person (even if they are a doctor) has a magic wand or crystal ball, and none of us are omnipotent. I recommend the AEC. They know their stuff in general.

When my dog got hit right in the jugular by my sometime naughty cat, I didn't know what to do. Blood was everywhere! Fortunately, my husband stayed calmed and look for the closest clinic open. We went to the Animal Emergency Clinic in Tacoma. We were very satisfied with our experience. The staff and doctors were compassionate and explained everything to me very well. The technician that helped me with my dog was great, she took my dog right back and applied a pressure wrap to stop the bleeding. It was a bit expensive but she is my dog therefore my responsibility so we paid the bill. They said my dog would be fine, she would have to take it easy for a bit until she healed, she did great! She hasn't learned to stay away from the cat though, the doctor warned me of this! :) I hope I won't need an emergency clinic again in the future but if I do this is where I will take my pets.

Pros: You can use them as a guage of where not to go

Cons: Too expensive, poor staff, worse on duty "doctors"

The 24hr Vet clinic in Tacoma (aka Puget Sound Vet Referral Center) is by far the worst place to take your loved animal if it's a caring, compassionate and knowledgeable staff you're hoping for. Had to take my kitty there when he was diagnosed with having something lodged in his esophagus. Next thing I know I am being told that there is nothing in his esophagus but instead has FIP. Huh? Feline Infectious Peritinitis. No vaccine, no cure, I have about a week left with him! Next day, having armed myself with all the info I could find on the internet about FIP, we went to pick up our cat. All be damned if I was ready to lose my TaterBug! They were going to send me home with no treatment. I was to just go home and watch him die and when he got to the point he could no longer get a breath I was to have him euthanized. They wouldn't even look at the studies I brought with me with various treatments that have atleast prolonged these kitties lives a bit, some even quite a bit. Almost 4 wks later (ya 4, not 1 like they said - because I found a very kind, compassionate doctor who happens to like cats quite a bit ;c) Dr. Smith at the Tacoma Cat Hospital also wasn't about to give up & got me 4 more cherished wks!), Tater took a huge turn for he worse and I took him back there to get his little chest tapped. That vet lady came in with a very defensive stance, tapped her finger on the counter, then crossing her arms starts to very abruptly tell me that Tater needed to be put down right then and there. My daughter about fell off her chair. I was about to become a bawling basketcase & wouldn't be able to make the long drive home if she detailed another word, I firmly asked her to "Stop!" and explained all that. She didn't hear a word I said. Her voice just rose an octive as she went on how she was an advocate for Tater, blah blah blah. Plus I never got results for (nor reimbursed), a $250 FIP test! Nope, I will never take another one of my 18 cats or 2 huskies there again.

The dog got into slug bait in the late evening after our vet was closed for the day. Our vets recording gave the number for the animal emergency clinic. Went in around 11pm on a friday night. They had a pretty full waiting room and seemed very busy. Took about 1 1/2 hours to speak to a vet, get the dog treated, and go through the check-out process. Not what you want to do on a friday night but we didn't have a choice.

This is the 2nd time weve been to the animal emergency clinic. All in all it is a great facility. You may be waiting for a while during those hours when the normal vet offices are closed...probably more so on the weekends.

We took our 11 yr old dachshund here almost 2 years ago and were very pleased with the care she received. Now our 8 year old dachshund is very, very ill and I'm disappointed. She spent the weekend at the Auburn Emergency clinic and received very good care there. Then we took her to her regular doctor who suggested Tacoma. We took her there and the vet said she would be started on a blood transfusion and get a ultrasound within 20 minutes. The vet said to read the material she gave us and that she would call us between 5 and 6 pm. Finally, at 7:30 we called and the receptionist said she would pass on the message. Nothing. Again about 8:15 I call. the vet had gone home!!! The receptionist finally had another doctor call us to let us know what was going on. I know they are an emergency room and are busy. But for cryin' out loud - a lousy 5 minutes for a phone call? We're waiting to hear if Bailey is even going to make it and they don't have the decency to call. They sure make sure they get their money before you leave though.
Update ~
While the above is true, her care after that was good. The vets seemed caring and compassionate. Unfortunately, Bailey did not make it.

I have been to AEC many times over the years. Every time I go I am impressed with the level of care, caring and expertise. They do triage immediately to assess your pet's need for care. When my latest dog charged a UPS truck and was run over, they practically met us at the door.

AEC IS NOT EXPENSIVE. To provide timely 24-hour emergency care, they are fully staffed regardless of time of day or how many patients come through the doors. This costs real money. No one working there is getting rich on anything but love from their clients. My last visit was only $90. When was the last time you paid that for a trip to Tacoma General?

I am grateful to have AEC near me.

I took two of my animals to this facility at different times over the course of three years. Had I known at the first visit what I learned at the last visit, I never would have visited at all. I think it is very problematic that a medical facility does not keep records of medical services provided...it is more than problematic, it is frightening. Drive to Seattle or anywhere before going here.

I am so grateful that there is a 24 hour facility in my area and i didn't have to drive to Seattle just for my cat to be seen in the middle of the night. If they had not been there I would have had to drive to Seattle and my cat would have not lived. The cost of our visit, though high compared to our regular vet, was justifiable. It must be quite expensive to keep a full staff 24 hours a day. These wonderful people were the most compassionate I have ever met. The lobby was packed and my dear Skittles was seen immediately because she had stopped breathing in the car. They were able to revive her and she stayed in the clinic for 3 days. She is at home and doing very well. If not for a wonderful caring staff she would not be with us today. Every community should have a 24 hour veterinary facility. I am just so grateful that we have one here in Tacoma. If I ever move I would make sure there was a 24 hour vet hosp near me.

My experience with this establishment was devastating. I firmly believe I lost my beloved pet because of their insufficient practice. On top of that I found no compassion there whatsoever. Combined with thousands of dollars (those were my bills) this fact in my opinion speaks volumes. I would recommend being extremely cautious when it comes to deciding on euthanasia in this facility. Unless it is an emergency situation and you are 100% positive that euthanasia is the only option for your pet - please get a second opinion. Furthermore, there is an extremely troubling aspect when it comes to this particular clinic: its business association with a certain pet crematorium. In other words: if your beloved pet is euthanized there and you chose cremation, your pet's cremation will be handled by a certain crematorium. To remain within ethical guidelines in posting of this review I will refrain from any further comments on this particular issue. Just one suggestion: don?t rely on what the clinic will tell you about how and where your pet will be cremated; drive there (to the crematorium) and see for yourself whether or not it is the kind of operation you would entrust your pet's final journey.

I will be forever grateful to this vet ER. the entire staff is absolutely wonderful. My kitty was very sick and here for 3 or so days. Her vitals looked really concerning but the staff took amazing care of her. REspected me as a patient and my desires. Allowed me to visit with my pet SEVERAL times over those days and never once was annoyed or seemed put out by having to set her up with me in a room.

Even when they had to have tough conversations with me regarding diseases my cat potentially had, they were extremely caring, informative, and respected/upheld my decisions for care.

By day 2 they all knew me and my cat by name. when I would go there at night I would see the staff taking the dogs out for fresh air and potty breaks. They all completely and genuinely love animals, people, and their jobs.

When youfirst get there, they whisk your animal away (in a good way) to get their vitals. It is an absolutely amazing process. Way better than any human hospital even!

Their facility has great equipment, was always clean, I felt comfortable there for the 3 days I was there. They offered my cat a total of about 10 different food options (to get her to eat)! Talk about SERVICE! My goodness! The staff even cuddled my little kitty girl when they had spare moments and put her in a cage where they could all see her at all times when she was doing badly. It was not a noisy facility, which is sometimes a problem at vets and vet ERs.

I went to another vet er in auburn and had an AWFUL experience. Lesson learned: No matter what city you are driving from, this is the place to go. Your animal will be seen faster anyway and receive TOP NOTCH care.

My cat was doing very badly when I took her in. She is home now and I owe these people everything. My two cats are my world.

Our dog was diagnosed with ketoacidosis from diabetes after suddenly losing over 1/3 of his body weight in about a week and half. Our regular vet sent us to the emergency clinic so he could be treated. The level of care that our dog received at the clinic was fabulous, and everyone was so kind and gentle with him.

When we would call to check on him the vets kept us fully informed on his progress and clearly answered any questions that we had. From the way they talked about him you could tell that they really cared about him as an individual and that he was more than "just another case" for them.

The front desk staff was extremely friendly, the techs were incredibly helpful, and the facility was clean and large. The bill for his treatment was high, but that is to be expected from any emergency clinic, and was well worth it for the high quality, compassionate care he received. We would highly recommend taking your pet here if you have an emergency.

Our big dumb yellow lab swallowed a pencil sharpener at 1:00 am, so I took him into the AEC.
They saw us right away and treated the dog immediately. They were informative and friendly. The vet was knowledgeable and helpful. The facility was clean and well kept. They are open 24 hours a day.

They are kind of expensive, $70 just to walk through the door, $100 per x-ray and $55 to make my dog puke, but I am sure that all 24 hour emergency clinics are priced similarly.

They are a great option for those after hours emergencies.

This is the only vet hospital that I am aware of in our area that can help your pets 24/7. I had to bring in my cat once and they were very good with her telling me my options and the next steps I needed to take.

They are a bit pricey, although this is a animal emergency clinic so I would expect that. The staff are very friendly, one man I spoke to whom worked the front desk was very kind-hearted.

PROS: Emergency help when needed most, friendly staff
CONS: A bit high on costs, although justifiable.
